Bangladesh [508] beat West Indies [111 & 213] by an innings and 184 runs in the 2nd Test, lead 2-0

Spinners picked up 34 of the 40 wickets in the first Test – it might be more of the same when Bangladesh and the Windies face off the second and last time from Friday, 30 November.

    Overview

    Bangladesh v Windies
    2nd Test
    Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium, Mirpur, Dhaka
Friday, 30 November, 9am local time, 3am GMT

Bangladesh fielded just one frontline pacer in the first Test, in Chittagong – Mustafizur Rahman. He bowled a grand total of four overs in the whole game, as their spinners did all the damage to give the home side a 64-run win in a low-scoring game.

With Shakib Al Hasan back in the saddle, Taijul Islam in the form of his life, Mehidy Hasan turning it big, and newbie Nayeem Hasan, a 17-year-old off-spinner, starting his career with a five-wicket haul, the plan for Bangladesh will likely be to subject the Windies to more of the same treatment.

The update from the camp is that Imrul Kayes will not be around following an injury, which might mean a debut for 23-year-old left-hand bat Shadman Islam at the top of the order alongside Soumya Sarkar. Wicket-keeper Liton Das has also been called up to the squad as cover for Mushfiqur Rahim, who has a finger injury, and so may be ruled out or only available as a specialist bat.

There will also be some focus on Sarkar, who got a chance to play his 11th Test after a gap of over a year because of the injury-enforced absence of Tamim Iqbal, but managed just 0 and 11. The rest of the unit did what was asked of them – Mominul Haque standing out with his 120 in the first innings – and Shakib will expect the same one more time.

Even as Bangladesh look to stamp their authority following the 1-1 series against Zimbabwe earlier, the Windies, who are being led by Kraigg Brathwaite following the injury to Jason Holder, will hope to move to the limited-overs leg of the series with honours shared.

In the more familiar environs of North Sound and Kingston, they beat Bangladesh by an innings and 219 runs and 166 runs in July, but have since lost three in a row – two in India and one in Chittagong.

There's no Holder, but that can’t be helped. Importantly for them, Shannon Gabriel and Kemar Roach more than held their own in the first Test, and the spin department – Devendra Bishoo, Jomel Warrican and Roston Chase – did appreciably well.

The struggle has been with the bat. Shimron Hetmyer and Shane Dowrich hit 60s and Chase 31 in the first innings in Chittagong, but there was little resistance bar Sunil Ambris’s 43, Hetmyer’s 27 and Warrican’s swish-and-swing 41 in the second innings as they folded for 139.

Brathwaite, Kieran Powell, Shai Hope and Chase, the experienced men, must take more of the load if the Windies are to push Bangladesh hard. Against the home team’s formidable spin attack, it won’t be easy.

    Key players

Shakib Al Hasan (Bangladesh): Shakib came back from injury, had hardly enough time to train, but got in the middle, scored 34 in the first innings, picked up five wickets, and led his team to a win. He will be fitter for the second Test, and being the best player of his team, will want to dominate.

Shimron Hetmyer (Windies): The 21-year-old batsman has emerged as the Windies big hope in recent times, scoring runs across formats, and scoring them in style. He looked in good touch in the first Test, and will be the key to the Windies negotiating the spin threat and putting up good scores.

    Conditions

It should be bright and sunny, and not too hot, in Dhaka when the two teams get out there. There are runs to be scored on the Mirpur pitch, especially on the first two-three days, and countering spin will be tough after that, so the team winning the toss will want to bat first.

    Squads

Bangladesh: Shakib Al Hasan (c), Soumya Sarker, Mohammad Mithun, Mominul Haque, Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), Mahmud Ullah, Mehidy Hasan, Mustafizur Rahman, Taijul Islam, Naeem Hasan, Ariful Haque, Syed Khaled Ahmed, Shadman Islam

Windies: Kraigg Brathwaite (c), Sunil Ambris, Devendra Bishoo, Roston Chase, Shane Dowrich, Shannon Gabriel, Jahmar Hamilton, Shimron Hetmyer, Shai Hope, Shermon Lewis, Keemo Paul, Kieran Powell, Raymon Reifer, Kemar Roach, Jomel Warrican

Sadman should have debuted against ZIM, but better late than never. He has been a prolific run scorer from his school days, but somehow Imrul managed to keep him out of XI with timely innings - at least 3 times I can recall Imrul hit a decent innings on his last chance.

Yes, I think Shadman should have been debuted at least a year ago. I don't think that any other young batsman has such a wonderful record in first class and List A than him. My fear is whether he will be given enough chances to prove himself. In BD you need to start your career with a bang with a century. Then u will get a long rope in even your worst phase of career like what Soumya got.

He is not a LO player, should focus on to be the Test specialist. Can become the first BD player to play 100 Test!!!!

Bangladesh have moved on nicely to 38/0 in 13 overs after electing to bat first. They will be looking to build on this start and put up a huge total on board. West Indies though will be looking to break this partnership.

Shadman should have debuted 1-2 years earlier. Our selection panel is totally clueless. Selecting useless players like Sabbir, Soumya, Mithun, for Tests ahead of guys like Shadman and Mosaddek is unbelievable.

Just need to get rid of Riyad so I would be relieved if he fails in this match. Might be milking that ton against Zimbabwe for the next 4 years.

    Tamim
    Shadman
    Mominul
    Mushfiq
    Mosaddek
    Shakib
    Nurul
    Miraz
    Mustafiz
    Ebadat
    Jayed/Khaled

that should be our XI for the NZ series. Taijul and Nayeem would be the guys for home Tests or turning pitches.

Mosaddek is weak against pace, shouldn't play away Tests. Top 3 left hander is not a good idea. I think, we should look to push Tamim or Momin at 4 and open with Shadman & Saif.

1st Test, Day 1, WIN conceded too many boundaries and allowed a RR of 3.5+ . They have come out today to keep the scoring rate down, which I think is the perfect tactics if you are to bat last on this track.

Exactly. Our selectors r beyond pathetic. They dropped Fizz to include a batsman. We have no pacers in this test. What will happen if the ball starts to reverse.

Actually, we are playing 4 specialist bowlers and 2 WKs who can make simply as batsman. Of the 4 bowlers, 2 can bat, and one will bat at 5, which I don't think is our fault. Similar formation and ENG is praised for their batting depth, but I do understand there are different standard set for different teams.

Team is absolutely perfect for the wicket - you play the game as the condition. The Test we got all-out for 44, WI played 4 pacers, and they put BD in on a damp wicket; don't think anyone had much issue there; while Indians take lots of pride for their spin quartet and rightly so - we are playing 4 spinners and each of them can bowl 60 overs/Test, there is absolutely no reason to play Mustafiz here, rather I do agree with the batting depth. Also, with new ball, Soumya can bowl few overs - Ala Ganguly, when IND used to play 4 spinners & Srinath at home Test.

I am actually happy that, our think tank finally can chalk out a strategy for a particular Test venue. The very next Test is in NZ and you'll see 3 pacers playing there.

If it was a 3 pacer tactics, indeed we should have used 5 bowlers. BD despite being a bottom team in Test, has almost always played 5 bowlers in last 10 years - you can check stats. If you have 2 spinners in bowling line-up, on such wickets you expect them to bowl 130+ overs, therefore even with 2 pacers combination, one can go with 4 bowlers, here were are using 4 spinners - absolutely no reason to pick a pacer to bat at 11 and may be bowl 6 overs in total.

I am not comparing with ENG, but it's a fact that Shakib & Miraz can make the XI on bowling merit and they can bat. Also, Mushi is injured, hence he can't keep - instead of Mustafiz, they have picked 2nd WK, who happens to play as specialist bat sometimes.

For that, batting depth is crucial for such wickets. This is for sure a result wicket therefore don't think taking 20 wickets is an issue for either teams, but few extra runs from the bottom half always helps on such wickets where probably 3 spinners are enough to take 20 wickets.

Current WI players are not really care about test or even ODI cricket. They are more into play franchise league to make more money rather than performing for their country. Example: S Naraine
T20 cricket is the cancer for cricket and it will destroy cricket all together. Players from poor cricket board will become more and more greedy.

Hello Brother I am doing well. I took a break from cricket as cricket was getting a little boring for me and concentrated in my career. Now I am back again as I am almost close to retiring at 30

Salam Brother Khan I was working on a confidential project and it required brain power hence I isolated myself from the inteenet. I am back again, yes seems like Bangladesh has improved but we need consistent players and fast bowlers. Bangladesh are yet to produce a world class fast bowler. Maybe another 10 years from now.

Opening bat Shadman Islam starred for Bangladesh with a half-century on Test debut as the hosts reached 259/5 at stumps on day 1 of the second Test against the Windies in Mirpur on Friday, 30 November.

Shakib Al Hasan's unbeaten half-century (55*), which came late in the day, and his 69-run partnership with Mahmudullah (31*) helped Bangladesh fight back in the final session after they were 190/5 at one stage.

Bangladesh won the toss and elected to bat first, and Soumya Sarkar and Islam got them off to a good start, adding 42 runs for the first wicket before Roston Chase had Sarkar caught by Shai Hope on 19.

Mominul Haque, the centurion from the first Test, then joined Sarkar and the duo took Bangladesh past 50 in the 21st over and looked to take the team to lunch without any further damage. Kemar Roach intervened with a short ball that got big on Haque, as he ended up lobbing a simple catch to Chase at long-on for 29.

At 87/2, Bangladesh walked into lunch with a good base laid by the top order for the likes of Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim, who were to follow. Mohammad Mithun joined Islam after the break and they put up a 64-run stand for the third wicket as Islam brought up his maiden half-century off of 147 balls.

Mithun and Islam also took Bangladesh past 100 and 150 as both batsmen relied more on rotating the strike than hitting boundaries. Before being dismissed bowled by a Devendra Bishoo wrong'un, Mithun had scored 29 runs off 61 balls with no fours or sixes.

Islam followed soon after, trapped lbw by Bishoo, for a well-compiled 76 of 199 balls with six fours and at 161/4, Bangladesh needed a partnership from the two most experienced middle-order batsmen, Hasan and Rahim.

Mithun and Islam added 64 runs for the third wicket and took Bangladesh past 150 before tea Mithun and Islam added 64 runs for the third wicket and took Bangladesh past 150 before tea
They took Bangladesh to tea at 175/4 but could only put up 29 runs for the fifth wicket as Shermon Lewis got the Windies a breakthrough shortly after the break by breaching Rahim's defence and rattling the stumps with an in-swinging delivery.

But this was not before Rahim became the second Bangladesh batsman to reach 4000 Test runs after Tamim Iqbal. Bangladesh brought up their 200 in the 72nd over of the day as Mahmudullah and Hasan bought their time and rode their luck to take Bangladesh to 214/5 at the final drinks break.

The Windies delayed taking the new ball after the 80th over even as the batsmen got comfortable at the crease. Mahmudllah pulled Bishoo for a boundary in the 80th over and then reverse swept the leg-spinner in his next for a couple.

The duo brought up the 50-run partnership for the sixth wicket and Hasan brought up his 24th Test half-century off 98 balls all in the 85th over as Bangladesh strolled to stumps having crossed 250 and wrestled back the momentum on their side.

Lol...the result would have been same. BD has not beaten India for more than 3 years now and Shakib was a part of most games, including the league game against India in same Asia cup. He avgs mighty 34 with bat and 40 with ball against India. He is a good player against weaker teams but India is too big a bridge for him to cross.

DHAKA, Bangladesh – The WINDIES bowlers heeded the call from captain Kraigg Brathwaite and took charge of the opening day of the 2nd Test against Bangladesh at the Sher-E-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka.

Shakib Al Hasan won the toss for Bangladesh and elected to bat first with a team that was packed with a minimum of five spinners. They got a solid start from their openers Soumya Sakrar and debutant Shadman Islam, before Roston Chase had Sarkar caught for 19. Shadman looked focus and without nerves playing in his first Test match, together with Mominul Haque, the pair looked set to take Bangladesh to a sizable first day total. However, veteran WINDIES pacer Kemar Roach broke the partnership when he had Mominul caught for 29, ensuring the WINDIES kept check on the batsmen.

Mohammad Mithun and Shadman started a slow rebuild, adding to their total through singles and quick running between the wickets. The fielding by the WINDIES was commendable, as they were agile and accurate to support the tight bowling. Just as Shadman and Mithun were settling, Brathwaite reintroduced Devendra Bishoo and he struck almost immediately, bowling Mithun for 29. Two overs later, Bishoo struck again, removing Shadman who looked set to get his maiden Test century, trapping him LBW for 76.

This little slide swung the momentum back in the WINDIES favour as the teams went to tea. The ever dangerous Mushfiqur Rahim joined his captain Shakib Al Hasan at the crease. Bangladesh’s most experienced pair looked set to rebuild their team’s innings which was now tottering on 161/4. They posted 29 runs together before Shermon Lewis steamed in and knocked the bails off Mushfiqur’s stumps for 14.

Mahmudullah joined Shakib in the middle and the pair took the home team to the close of play on day one to 259/5, with Shakib on 55 not out and Mahmudullah 31 not out. Bowling for the WINDIES Bishoo retuned the best figures with 2/69, while Shermon Lewis, Kemar Roach and Roston Chase all finished with one wicket each.

Speaking at the close of play, Bishoo said “We had a good first day with the 5 wickets falling… By the end of the day we focused on containing Shakib and Mahmudullah and will be looking to get the next 5 wickets early tomorrow morning when play resumes, without them adding a lot more runs.”

Indeed, but he was opening, therefore you can allow him to take some time, specially when our No. 2 & 3 are playing Test cricket in T20 mood.

Also, this being his debut Test, he deserves a bit space - he played his role perfectly till a good ball got him out. Today, WIN tactics was a bit surprising, they went to defensive mood too early & blocked almost every boundary hitting channel. I think, our RR was quite decent in last 2 sessions, but WIN bowled lots of overs in 1st session & the RR was like 2.6, otherwise 259/5 on day 1 isn’t a bad effort on this wicket. Even Shakib maintained a 50+ SR with only 1 boundary in his innings.

This wicket should break later, therefore spending time in middle isn’t the worst tactics, specially when we are protecting 1-0 lead in a 2 Test series, but today Shakib has to show positive intent. Probably WIN will start the day with 2nd new ball, so first half & hour should be left for bowlers, but after that if this pair is still batting, we should target 3.5+ RR from there on.

Lol, bigger bridge? BD almost crossed that bridge in last few encounters, just bad luck. Shakib's 34 with the bat with the final could have been a big difference when Liton couldn't find a partner who could even cross 30 to make a partnership. But all are speculations ,ifs and butts, no value in arguing.

@Canford Cliffs you still complaining about BD pitches? Last time Aus toured Ind in 2017, Ind were bowled out for 105 and 107 respectively in one of the match in their own home conditions lol.

After that demolition, they went to pitches where scoring 1000 runs were normal.

We haven't seen Mosaddek bat against pace, so thats just fake news at this point IMO. In fact, Mosaddek's best ODI score has been in New Zealand where he was tonking Lockie Ferguson...and who's pacier than him?

Mosaddek can certainly play pace better than the likes of Sabbir Rahman, or Fazle Rabbi, or Imrul Kayes, or all the other hacks that Bangladesh has played/will continue to play.

Need to accelerate - ideally, we should target to bowl 10-12 overs before Tea; that's about 2 more hours from now. Once if they can reach 400, should go after the bowling and get all-out for a score close or over 450.

128 in 25 overs before lunch, which I think is exactly what's needed. Now, after lunch, should look to bat for 20 overs and may be reach 500 - this wicket isn't like something that you just keep bowling on length-line & wicket will do the rest; lots of initiative will be required to take 20 wickets. Yesterday, WIN went to ultra defensive, which kept RR down, but now they are struggling for our batting depth.

I agree , hosts need to bowl 40 overs today as for taking 20 wickets , they will have to bowl over 220 overs as pitch is flat as i have been saying since yesterday . Why did you yesterday feel 1st innings score of 315-325 was good ?

I still think, 325 was/is good - it's a 2 innings game. For the sake of saying, say we get 319 and WIN replies with 450, by end of Day 3 - still, we can bat for 300+ 2nd time and set WIN 170+ on 5th day, which'll never be easy.

I didn't say 325 is good (obviously 525 is much better), rather I said we'll be in dominating position if we can match 1st innings total - that still holds true, considering that we are in lead of the 2 Test Series and WIN will need to force the issue here.

Honestly, the class of our spinners is much better than that of West Indies and our bats are much better player of spin than WI. While counter arguement that their pacers are superior in tests and their batsman are better players of pace.

So while BD looks good for 500, I think WI will struggle to score 400 runs even on this track.

There is enough time left for us to lose this Test - why should Shakib declare? In fact, declaring in 1st innings is foolish, unless you have posted 600+ - if you have wickets in hand, factor that in scoring rate and allow as much time to your bowlers to get 20 wickets. We declared in NZ for like 570/8 - then & then I called it was a mistake .....................

Does anyone else feel that Litton Das has too much resemblance with Rohit Sharma of the past? I mean immensely talented but just finds ways to get out, generally playing poor shots ofc. All the talent being wasted. Domestic bully.

No. Bangladesh is trying to make it more difficult for the WI. The more BD will bat on this wicket the more difficult it will get for WI. Pitch is still good for batting and BD is trying to use it in their advantage as much as they can. From day 3 it will become quite difficult to bat on. No point in giving them the chance to bat on a good second day wicket.
