Bilal Asif takes 5/65 & Azhar Ali scores 62* as Pakistan reach 139/3 at Stumps on Day 2

On a day of ebb and flow that has been characteristic of this Test series in general, day one of the third Test saw New Zealand fight back from some early blows from Yasir Shah, only to be struck down by the rest of the Pakistani attack in third session, finishing the day on 229/7.

Kane Williamson won the toss an elected to bat, and a quick start from Jeet Raval and Tom Latham was derailed by a maiden Test wicket for Shaheen Afridi – the first of many one would presume. Getting one to cut back into the left-handed Latham’s front pad, Sarfraz Ahmed opted for a review after the hearty appeals of the Pakistanis were denied. The decision was vindicated, with the ball channelling towards the top of middle-stump, giving the home side an early breakthrough.

Raval and Williamson combined well to keep New Zealand ticking along smoothly until the thorn in their side, the man who tore them to shreds in Dubai, decided to spoil the party. The leg-spinner Yasir first had Raval depart for 45, trapping him in front of his stumps, before tearing through the defence of Ross Taylor first ball.

It was a case of déjŕ vu from the second Test, when Taylor had departed to his second delivery in the first-innings. How he must be sick of the sight of Yasir and his wizardly ways. Henry Nicholls was next to fall in Yasir’s trap, bowled around his legs for just one, as New Zealand concluded the morning session on 73/4.

Williamson and BJ Watling returned for the second session in a resilient mood, battling hard and scrapping for every run in the striking heat of Abu Dhabi. While the run-rate dropped significantly, it appeared that the Black Caps pair were ready to grind their way through the day – taking a leaf out of Pakistan’s book from the second Test.

The pair helped their side brave the Yasir storm to take New Zealand to 145/4 at tea. It seemed that Williamson was to reach another impeccable Test century, but Hasan Ali intervened in the third session, with Williamson clipping the ball to Asad Shafiq at short midwicket to fall for 89.

Colin de Grandhomme entered the fray, and seemed to be in the mood for a shift in strategy, taking a more attacking approach. He deposited Yasir for six, before flicking Ali for four through the leg-side. It wasn’t to pay dividends however, as he guided a Bilal Asif delivery into the hands of leg-slip to finish his innings on 20 from 22 balls.

Tim Southee followed to give Asif his second wicket of the innings, top-edging a sweep to Babar Azam to leave New Zealand reeling for the second time in the day, positioned precariously on 209/7.

Nevertheless, debutant Will Somerville battled hard alongside the ever-patient Watling to help New Zealand reach stumps on 229/7. Watling will resume tomorrow morning on 42, compiled from 180 deliveries, an effort that has featured just one boundary.

While Yasir will be eyeing another five-wicket haul tomorrow morning – he collects them for a hobby – New Zealand’s lower order will look to squeeze out as many runs as they can, with both sides desperate to claim a series win.

    Score:

New Zealand 229/7 (Kane Williamson 89, BJ Watling 42 no)
    Yasir Shah 3/62
    Bilal Asif 2/57

Pakistan will have to bat last on this wicket. So, Pakistan need a big lead in the first innings that could only be possible if remaining NZ wickets are taken at the earliest today morning.

Even a 150 becomes very tricky for Pakistan while chasing. If NZ are restricted to 250 then to have a sizable lead of 150 Pakistan will have to score 400 plus which might not be easy this time around.

Pakistan will have to bat very well in the first innings to win this.

Because Pakistan can very well be expected to fall even chasing 170, we have hallmarks of a very competitive test match at least at this stage.

Pakistan needs 1 big 150+ run partnership in 1st innings. It is actually good that Kiwiz will bat in the first hour.

Demons if there are any in the pitch will be revealed. I still think this pitch will be best for batting today till tomorrow tea.

Pakistan need a lead of 150 to win conceding a lead or equalling the score
Will mean tough going for Pakistan

Watling's patience is praise worthy - if not the runs, he has spent enough time in middle for the wicket to deteriorate. May be in 2nd innings, Kiwis can think of opening with one of Taylor or Watling & drop Latham down.

This game is done and dusted as far as I am concerned, NZ winning this. I said it yday if NZ gets to 275+ then they will win this and if they cross 250+ then also they will be favorites to win this. Bookmakers probability of Pakistan winning this game has come down from 70% to 55% since morning in a span of 20 odd runs.

They are saying what they wish to happen, not what actually is happening. Before spinners, on this dead slow track PAK & it's famous opening pair will need to negotiate high class 20 overs of new ball bowling.

NZ isn't that bad of a team all things considered. I think them and Pakistan are in a grey area of their own, far above Bangladesh and West Indies but not quite top 3 level.

They don't have any stand out players other than Williamson and Boult in favorable conditions, but they work as a team quite well.

Currently no team has more than 1 or 2 stand out players

This Bilal 4-for will hurt Pakistan in the UAE in the long-run. Everytime a player is about to be dropped, he either makes runs or wickets to do just enough to stay in the team. Wouldn't be surprised if Hafeez got a century here.

If Bilal does get a 5-fer here, it would mean he will have two 5-fers in five tests in one season. That's not bad whichever way you look at it.

Would be happier if Hafeez scores a century and taken to sa where he will fail as usual rather having a debutant as scapegoat on overseas tours I think he didn’t played in aus nz wi plus partial eng tour we had Sami aslam as scapegoat

Bilal averages 24 with the ball in the UAE. That would be like hafeez averaging 50 in the UAE which I don't think he does. He's not a great spinner but are there any better off spinners or Chinaman spinners in Pakistan?

Watling is giving Boult too much strike, I don't think he backs himself to hit the boundaries so is taking every run he can.

What do you want then? You can't compare a new guy Bilal with Hafeez. You can't expect every spinner to perform like Yasir Shah (Especially when he is relatively new)

5 for for Bilal, cleaned the bottom half alone. Because of the slow turn & low bounce, I think it's more of a finger spinner's track - he might get another 5for 2nd time here.

As it is, Pak should eye for 400+ while NZ should look to restrict Pak to 325.

Anyone's game currently. NZ lost the huge advantage after winning toss and batting first though. Should have scored 350 here.
