Pakistan reduce New Zealand to 26/2 at Stumps after being bowled out for 348 with a 74-run lead

The third and final Test between Pakistan and New Zealand – which is also the series decider – is still in the balance at stumps on day two at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi. The hosts will start the third day on 139/3, 135 runs adrift of the Black Caps' total.

Despite losing four wickets in the morning, New Zealand gained the upper hand in the first session of play. A resilient effort from BJ Watling – who faced 250 deliveries to score 77 runs – guided the visitors past 250 after finding themselves in a dire position on the first day.

The New Zealand wicket-keeper was ably assisted by the lower order. Debutant William Somerville lasted 99 deliveries, adding 45 runs with Watling for the eighth wicket. Bilal Asif was the pick of the Pakistan bowlers, claiming the remaining wickets to restrict the visitors to 274.

However, Kane Williamson would have gone into the innings break as the happier captain, after his side added invaluable runs to their overnight total of 229/7. Trent Boult off the tenth delivery of the second innings, removing Mohammad Hafeez – who is set to hang up his boots after this Test – even before Pakistan got their first run on the board.

Hafeez's dismissal was the last bit of action before lunch, which subsequently meant that the hosts returned to the pavilion with a score of 0/1. Boult struck once again after lunch, as Imam ul-Haq edged his out-swinger to Tim Southee's safe pair of hands at second slip.

Just when it seemed like New Zealand were taking ascendancy in the match, Azhar Ali and Haris Sohail took a page out of Watling and Somerville's book, mitigating the situation with their watchful batting. They put up a crucial 68-run stand for the third wicket and navigated Pakistan without further hiccups till tea.

The momentum swung once again after tea, as it has so often in this Test already. Southee – who had held on to two catches in the slip in the second session – now claimed a scalp of his own. A length delivery, which was angled away from Sohail, extracted an outside edge off his slashing willow and nestled into the waiting hands of Watling behind the wicket.

The visitors were right back in the contest with that significant breakthrough in the fourth over after tea. However, Ali and Shafiq – the new batsman in – dug in thereafter, dropping the anchor in a display of pure Test batting to guide Pakistan through turbulent waters.

The duo put on an unbeaten 54-run stand which can be used by the hosts as a foundation to build on. With Ali batting on 62* and more firepower to come down the order, Pakistan will feel confident after the day's play.

However, the New Zealand bowlers – Boult in particular – have been very disciplined and difficult to negotiate in this Test. With the surface getting older as the Test progresses, the visitors will fancy a few wickets tomorrow, especially the spin duo of Ajaz Patel and William Somerville on a track that is taking a considerable amount of turn.

    Score:

    New Zealand first innings: 274
    Pakistan first innings: 139/3

Pakistan’s strategy should be to bat out full 90 overs today and score minimum 200 runs.

Lower order composed of Sarfaraz and Bilal Asif’s contribution will be valuable.

If Pakistan manages to bat out full 90 overs then this Test will either be a draw or Pakistan’s win.

Morning session holds the key, and new ball is also due in the 2nd hour. There are no demons in the pitch and Asad Shafique has to score big today.

Looks like Azhar has changed his batting tactics, lot more positive here. That's key in Test when batting 2nd, occupying crease for long nonproductive time doesn't help much.

Kane should be kicking himself, he was in and could have scored a big 100 to set up a big series win.

That's the difference between him and the Smith and Kohli, those two are a couple levels above Kane and Root.

Only good for scoring pretty runs, don't have it in them to win big matchess when the opportunity arises.

Yeah, but if he can get them right in the armpits, chances of beating them is greater than off the front foot unless it's reversing.

Pakistan is playing brilliantly. Seems like they want to score big here and dont want to chase. What Pakistan need to do here is to play till the end of the day and at least get a lead above 150+. If wickets are in hand, then have some quick runs to make 200 and declare.

Positive start today although I’m not too worried about scoring rate. The strategy should be to bat through till tea tomorrow which will put New Zealand in awkward position of batting for a draw as there won’t be enough time for them to get a lead big enough to declare.

It's easy to bat, not my fault if our players and incapable of making use of it.

Pakistan should thrive in these conditions they have nothing other worry about batting and come the third innings they'll be bowling to batsmen who cannot cope with bounce or spin.

We are the absolute worst team when it comes to bowling on dead wickets. Might not even see a wicket today...

People bring up the low RRs between the teams and a "double standard" but the fact is when Pakistan bat slowly there are no runs or wickets. When we bat slow there's still a good chance of a wicket.

Right now it feels like Pakistan are on target for a declaration barring a self inflicted collapse.

So 66 runs in about 16 overs this morning. And we're supposed to believe that you can't score at a quick pace in the UAE without getting out. Rubbish. You only need intent and scoring at 3.3 is not difficult at all.

Pakistan will have a 100 run lead by the end of the day at this rate. Going around at a great clip. Only one team can win if Pakistan score big in this innings.

Pakistan just needs to bat out today irrespective of the run rate.

If we go at 3 rpo for the rest of the day we should be 150 runs ahead but wickets usually come in clusters so i expect us to get a leadbof around 50-70 in total.

Is there anything more frustrating in cricket than watching your bowlers bowling when you know they have zero chance of getting a wicket?

Have had that feeling too many times the last few years.

Spinners bowling the wrong pace IMO.

We are well ahead here. Azhar looks like he will go big . 100 run plus lead should be enough.

People were going on about both teams going at the same rate, but we all knew Pakistan could pick up a wicket. When Pakistan shut down it felt like there was zero chance of NZ picking up a wicket.

If you had to see bowlers like ours bowl on dead pitches as often as I have, you'd be pessimistic too.

Seen it all too often against the top teams, it sucks.

Very impressed by the urgency and game awareness shown by both Azhar and Shafiq here. They know if they bat at a good clip and bat Pakistan into a strong opposition, there will be only one winner.

The match is not over by any means. Our lower order can get out very quickly.
So this wicket and babar's wicket holds the key.

    Rest is bonus.

The difference is whether or not New Zealand bats slow or fast. they're going to lose wickets. But if Pakistan bats slow they have much less chance of losing wickets

This partnership is the key. If they take us to 300 , we can get a lead of 100 plus.
