    Australia vs India | 1st Test | Adelaide | Dec 6-10, 2018 | Day 1 Thread

India, who have never won a Test series in Australia, see their best chance at changing that statistic when they take on an inexperienced Australia side in a four-match series, starting in Adelaide.

After tours of South Africa and England earlier this year, where they came close and fought hard but couldn't close it out, Virat Kohli's side are hungry for an overseas win. And Australia, who are without two of their star batsmen in Steve Smith and David Warner, who are serving bans, seem ripe for the picking.

The tourists, No.1 on the MRF Tyres ICC Test Team Rankings, are only too aware, though, of the dangers a side can pose at home. Besides, they know they will be facing young players highly determined to make an mark for themselves in the new set-up. As Usman Khawaja and co. showed against Pakistan in Dubai, they are still capable of a scrap. Throw into the mix India's poor record in Australia, and, as Justin Langer, Australia's coach, pointed out, Kohli's men will be "under great pressure".

Naming their 12 on the eve of the game, they left out Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Kuldeep Yadav, going with a four-man bowling attack of Mohammed Shami, Ishant Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah and off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin. The choice in the final XI will likely be between Rohit Sharma and Hamuma Vihari, with Vihari providing a bowling option as well if he is picked.

Much of the focus will be on Kohli, with the Australians looking hard for chinks in his armour. But the likes of Ajinkya Rahane, KL Rahul and Murali Vijay, who have tasted success before in Australia, too will pose a threat. The Indian batsmen were in poor form in England, struggling against swing and seam, but will back themselves to do well in Australian conditions against the Kookaburra ball.

Australia's main threat is their first-choice pace attack of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins. With the trio fit and finally reunited, the team will look to them to make early inroads into the opposition line-up. The canny Nathan Lyon will be backing them up. The spinner, after all, does have a good record against Kohli.

Marcus Harris is set to make his debut, with Mitchell Marsh, one of the two vice-captains, missing out as the team look to boost their batting. Of the others, Travis Head could chip in with part-time spin.

The last time the teams met in the format, there was plenty of tension and words exchanged. But since then, both teams have come a long way. The spirit of competition remains high, but in an atmosphere of respect.

    Players to watch
Marcus Harris (Australia): The left-hander from Victoria is coming into the team on the back of strong runs at the Shield level, where he also has a high-score of 250*. With Australia keen to find a dependable partner for Aaron Finch at the top of the order, much will be expected from him. Langer has praised his composure, saying, "Hes a terrific young player and hes looked very good in some of the most competitive net sessions Ive seen for a long time in Australian cricket."

Murali Vijay (India): The India opener had fallen out of favour in the England series, but stayed positive and fought his way back into contention following a successful county stint and on first-class form. He warmed up for the Tests with a 132-ball 129, which included 16 fours and five sixes, against Cricket Australia XI. As usual in Australia, much will be expected from the openers, who will face some of the trickiest conditions with the new ball and Australia's tearaway pacers.

    Conditions
It's expected to be a hot day in Adelaide, with temperatures reaching 36C. The stadium has in recent years hosted day-night Tests, so daytime conditions will be a new experience for the home bowlers. The surface is expected to be dry.

    Teams
Australia: Tim Paine (c, wk), Marcus Harris, Aaron Finch, Usman Khawaja, Shaun Marsh, Travis Head, Peter Handscomb, Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Starc

India (from): Virat Kohli (c), KL Rahul, Murali Vijay, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, Rohit Sharma, Hanuma Vihari, Rishabh Pant (wk), Ravichandran Ashwin, Mohammed Shami, Ishant Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah

Kohli finally wins a toss!!!! But, Adelaide is probably the first place where you wont mind losing toss.

IND must avoid going to lunch 3-4 down, otherwise 450+ should be on the cards.

Unfortunately Vijay has declined massively since his last tour. 2-3 down by lunch is inevitable.

I spent 15 years in Toronto but still hate the winter (don't mind the cold too much, but the snow). The US is better in most ways IMO.

And yet @Junaids was roundly criticised for making this exact point before the test started.

India making a meal out of this.

This is the most dead wicket in Australia and they have won the toss in near perfect batting conditions.

They need to make 400 otherwise Australia will eat up any score below it.

Looks like this series is going to be Aussies vs Kohli. And by the looks of it this match is already half gone with Kohli’s wicket.

In that grand stand alone has more crowd than entire 5 Test season produced in UAE. But, compared to Ashes, it's less indeed.

Khawaja's inner Pakistani comes out and he ups his game against India .

That catch alone is enough to justify his selection.

If Indian openers exposes Kohli in 1st hour to new ball, IND'll struggle in this series. I was fearing exactly this - 3/4 down by lunch before the moisture dries out.

Aussies have done their home work - I can recall so far 2 singles through leg side and probably 5-6 runs on front foot.

Indian batsmen poor footwork has cost them all 3 wickets.

If they had taken a good stride forward they could have survived as they were not fantastic deliveries by any stretch.

They really are tossing away the game inside the first hour. All self inflicted.

They couldn’t help themselves because it works at home.

Shastri is an awful coach though so it’s not that surprising he couldn’t prepare them better.
