"If we play well, we'll win in South Africa" : Mickey Arthur

Mickey Arthur speaking to Ramiz Raja after Pakistan lost the series to New Zealand:

"Disappointed we didn't seize our moments in the first inns. NZ were outstanding in this Test, they were good in all departments and outplayed us here"

"We had opportunities in the 1st Test, it shouldn't have come down to this Test, it should have been done and dusted after Dubai"

"On Day 5 it's always going to be tough here. I don't buy into the stigma attached to Pakistan (about fourth inns). We were soft today, weak at times. The players have the skills levels, they have to believe in their ability and techniques. They're good enough players, we just have to find a way to get over that"

"In the 1st inns, we had two set batsmen at 300/4 and we threw it away, we could have capitalised. That lead of 74 should have been 150"

"Without a doubt, the tail has to do better. I am pretty disappointed with their performances in this series and the Aus series. They put the work in, they work hard but they've gotta be better when they get to the middle. It's going to be tough in SA, they will be bounced and it'll be hard work. They have to find a way to hang in there with the in batsman. We want 100 runs from the last four wicket partnerships. That takes an in batsman and one partnership and a mini partnership somewhere. We're not gonna get it batting like that, so that's something we're gonna have to improve on"

"We gotta go hard in our first innings. It's been a long time since Misbah and Younis so we needed the experience of our batsmen to come through. I kinda think that the young players are better outside spinning conditions than they are here. They will improve in these conditions as they work hard on it. I'm really keen to see how the top order goes in SA. I thought in England, I thought we batted well specially at Lord's. I'm hoping we get a little bit of the same in SA because if we get scores, we have the bowling attack to bowl sides out. We have to get better in the 4th innings and on wickets that turn"

"Our seasoned campaigners both got hundreds here. It's unfair to have a go at them after they got hundreds. They're getting better and better. They've played well all around the world. They will carry our batting for a period of time. But we have two young players in Babar Azam and Haris Sohail who are showing signs of becoming very good. We get FZ back at the top of the order, Imam is progressing slowly and working hard on his game, I'm comfortable that this top six is good enough. They haven't shown it consistently in this series but as we move on, I back them and they're going to get better and better"

"We have a good seam attack, we can bowl sides out but we have to get runs. The problem is the batting but it's unfair to question two guys who got hundreds in this game, and two young guys who are showing good signs. We have to give them time, they are good enough. When they start scoring consistently, we're going to move up the rankings table"

"A couple of years ago, we were languishing in the same position in ODI and T20I cricket but we amended that. In Test cricket, we were in a good position and through Waqar's campaign, they did unbelievably well, based on experience, but we lost that. It takes time for these guys to do the job but I've got the belief in them"

"The young players we have are incredible cricketers. We missed a couple in this series, Shadab, Faheem in other conditions, Fakhar. Once we get the squad consistent and the team well balanced for conditions here and overseas, we will move up that table"

"We're not going to bowl an off-spinner in SA so Yasir is our prime spinner and we have Shadab as an all-rounder, so if we want to look at another combination, I love the 5 bowler combination, but then Shadab and Faheem become vital cogs at 7/8 like we had in England, they have to do the job of the 6th batsman together which gives the team balance"

"Bilal has bowled exceptionally well and he's improved a lot in these six weeks. He gives us a great option in these conditions but you're not going to take a guy like that to SA"

"We're gonna give Imam every opportunity, he's shown all the right signs. It's a tough job. We have Fakhar coming back and I'm excited about that as he plays the type of cricket we want to play in terms of our run rate. He comes in and has the ability to take the game away from the opposition. Shan Masood has locked the door in the A team and is coming back in. We have our three best openers"

"Hafeez got a ton in the first Test and then sorta stopped and started through. Fakhar got injured, he needed the break to be ready for SA, I though he was outstanding on debut and Shan Masood has knocked the door down"

"I believe that these are the 3 best openers we've got at the moment so we have to give them every opportunity to become the best they can be"

"When Azhar Ali plays well, he's still one of the top five batsmen in world cricket. I saw a graph the other day which showed Babar Azam and Haris Sohail were amongst the top 10 batters in the world in Test cricket. That's two young players that are developing and we've gotta give them time. Then we have Asad Shafiq who is a solid player, as solid as you get at #5 and I'm comfortable that he'll continue to produce for us. That's a handy top six which can play in all conditions"

"Our post mortem is going to address how we were soft. I thought we were weak in this series. Weak mentally, because we had chances to close the game out and we didn't take them"

"Talent wise and skill wise, we have the right players in the dressing room. If we play well, we'll win in South Africa"

Too bad that your team rarely plays well.

Couldn't beat a weak New Zealand in your own home base.

In what world will you beat South Africa IN South Africa with the same team?

Looks like Mickey is happy with the team, mainly he is unhappy with bowlers (last 4 wickets) not batting well, so bowlers need to bat well and obviously bowl well, and you want everyone to field well, so basically bowlers must do everything.

..and team is mentally weak, so just become mentally strong, somehow, and there you are.. Pakistan are THE team to beat!

But he also said he likes the top six which would mean Sarfaraz at seven and leaves no room to accommodate both.... They'll probably wait until they can get a better idea of how the pitches are expected to play.

True. Don't know what combination is better anymore since our batsmen are useless.

May be open with all-rounder Fahim or Shadab - that fits in the equation.

There are some glaring issues and solutions that he constantly chooses to ignore:

    1. You need a left arm spinner in UAE at all times. Bring in Kashif Bhatti, Zafar Gohar, or Mohammad Asghar. Any of these 3 would be fine. Remove Bilal Asif as he is not international standard.

    2. Shan Masood is a complete failure in test match cricket. He does not have the technique to succeed in test matches and will constantly provide slip catches to the South African slip cordon. He has done well in limited overs domestically so try him out there. Abid Ali deserves a spot in the test matches as he has done well in seaming pitches in Pakistan.

    3. Imam ul haq has to go from all formats. Period. Mentally weak player and a 100% nepotistic selection. Plays horribly slow in ODI's and doesn't have the technique to succeed in Tests.

    4. Mohammad Amir has to play in all conditions or don't play him at all. Absolute injustice to other deserving domestic bowlers to break their backs in UAE and get dropped for seaming conditions.

    5. Sarfraz's captaincy is starting to take it's toll. His performances across all three formats is declining at a rapid rate. It's time to start grooming a different captain atleast for Tests but at the moment no one seems an obvious choice. The only candidates that come to mind are Azhar or Asad although I wouldn't choose either.

He's partially right . Can't blame Azhar, Asad and Bilal for this loss. Hafeez, imam, Sarfraz, Harris are the real culprits . Since saifi is untouchable, the others needed to lift their game but flopped.

Have a feeling Mickey Arthur is softening himself and is resigned to the problems in Pakistan Cricket and the fact that they aren't really going to change drastically any time soon. I wonder if he will bother to renew his contract once his contract period is over.

This New Zealand side is not a WEAK team. This is best NZ side ever. They have top class bowling attack. Better than Pakistan. Southee, Boult, Neal Wagner, Milne and a very talented spin bowling attack to back it up. A deadly Fast Bowler like Lockie Ferguson can't even find a spot in this side. It is the bowlers that win you Tests. Pakistan only had Yasir Shah whose is world class. One Bowler can't win all the matches. The 1 test that we won was because Yasir got 14 wickets. Yasir can't get so many wickets in every test.

If they play an opening pair of Azhar and fakhar, Pakistan should go better than expected . I think PAK should play

    Fakhar
    Azhar
    Haris
    Asad
    Babar

    Sarfraz/Rizwan
    Shadab/Yasir
    Hasan
    Abbas
    Shaheen

The problem is I don't see a no.6 in your squad unless Shan or imam can play as makeshift no.6 since both are terrriblrvas openers and against pace they are very vulnerable. Rizwan should ideally play nice Sarfraz but that's not gonna happen. I know Yasir was terrific in this series but I'd actually go by who bowls better in warm up. If shadab is bowling better I'd prefer him just to lengthen the batting because I doubt either of them would very effective in those surfaces as bowlers.

Have to BLAME AZHAR & ASAD.

You are looking at this statistically, which has noting to do with final series out come. At 130-3 on last ball before Lunch, Asad got out with 45 still needed and then what Azhar did later is epic - check what Pujara did at Adelaide and he is no celebrated stroke maker, just a set set guy who knew how to bat with tail. These Asad/Azhar are players well into their 30s, with ~10 years experience and both have played enough games. Ideally, without these two dummies, PAK should have been 2-0 by 3rd Test and Kiwis playing through the motion, waiting to end the Test and return back home - most likely 3-0; which these 2 stooges have allowed to drift enough for 1-2.

Even Bilal has a 5for and guy bowled brilliantly in 2nd Test, kept RR at 2. But, with 74 lead and 60-4, you should ask Mickey & his Captain what was their tactics, when Kiwis should have been panicking rather Sarfraz losing air like a pinned ballon once Kiwis were in lead. Even if PAK had 174 lead, Kiwis would have got away with a draw, or would have won it in a time less Test - they scored 82 in 9 overs in last morning, and PAK scored 140-0 in 2 session on 2nd day trailing 0-1 as host ..... then Bhakhts had the audacity to call our names here who didn't join the bhajan.

If you are looking at it that way then sure they can be blamed but the way I see it despite chokers , Azhar and Asad are still the best batsmen in this lineup currently but the rest are even worse. Imam was getting roughed up by 135 kph short balls on this pitch which was the slowest I've seen even in Abu Dhabi ! Haris sohail was throwing his wicket away to full tosses and less said about hafeez the better. I'll cut Sarfraz some slack for letting NZ off the hook at 60-4. He was forced to overbowl Yasir since Hasan had a niggle and bowled Yasir for nearly 40 overs. They were essentially a 3 man attack yesterday and NZ took full advantage of that.

Looking forward to glorified tail-enders like Shadab and Faheem take Pakistan from 60-5 to 250. They will negotiate the reverse-swing of Steyn and Rabada with the old ball and conventional swing with the new ball.

Not to mention the guile of Maharaj and the laser accuracy of Philander, with the ball darting off the pitch both ways after hitting the seam perfectly ball after ball.

Lets forgive them and give this lot final chance of redemption.

If they manage to win Test series in South Africa then yes our team has bright future. Team has to compensate this loss with a win in South Africa. Draw there will not be enough now to win back hearts and minds.

Nice sarcasm but considering they took us from 227/5 to 363 vs England and 159/6 to 310 vs Ireland, it is not unfathomable that this could happen. Shadab was the leading runscorer across both sides in that England series, but sure he's a glorified tail-ender.

I think, you are setting too high standard - this team doesn't deserve such expectation. What about starting with a bit humble target like - making SAF bat 6 times, or not depriving CSA gate money for a full day?

Let alone win or even 0-0/1-1 draw, I'll take 0-2 as a major success without help from rain God and 1-2 is like performance of the decade.

Beginner's luck. Anwar Ali and Bhatti won us an ODI in South Africa on their debut and we thought we had unearthed Razzaq and Mahmood II.

Neither Shadab nor Faheem are all-rounders. They are only marginally better than the likes of Amir and Hasan with the bat, and neither is good enough to average more than 20 in the long run. We will of course come to terms with it eventually, but as always, we will learn it the hard way.

Both are massively overrated. Fancy bits and pieces players.

Fahim has been ordinary with the bat, but Shadab has already shown plenty of glimpses of his batting ability vs SL, England & New Zealand. One Asia Cup failure is not enough to completely dismiss his batting ability

I've had great respect for Arthur, this interview is truly disappointing.

If this interview is true, seems he has surrendered to Inzamam's cronyism and his nephew.

The batting selections are in no way justified. There is no indication that he'll change the batting which is terrible to say the least.

He is banking little too much on Fakhar, Shadab and Faheem. It rumored that Arthur had a role in selecting Amir again. Don't know if this gamble will pay off.

Nothing on the rushed selection announcement by Inzamam just to protect his nephew's place in the side.
A very pathetic interview at this point of time. Does'nt give hope that things are going to be better,

From this interview, Arthur is just trying to save his job.

Saying all the "good" things, no real criticism of what went wrong, what we're doing wrong, what we need to change.

In his eyes, Shafiq, Sarfraz and Shan Masood are excellent batsmen.

Shameful defeat and bigger shame is not make any change for the next series. Same selector, same coach , same opener ( imam) and worst of all , the most pathetic wicket keeper batsman in the world still manage to keep his place in all three formats and also is the captain.

Inzi will go down as the worst selector Pakistan ever had.

Guys, this is the best squad that could have been picked give or take openers. People who think otherwise at ethe same deluded bunch who thought we should go for the chase this morning forgetting the last 7 last day debacles in the last 18 months.
People who think that saad and Usman would do better than our existing middle order first up in SA?? Really !!!???

There is only one Specialist (among picks), who has failed - Imam. You can add Sarfraz as well, if you consider him as specialist Captain, but I keep him for the next part. Among batsmen Azhar, Asad, Babar & Haris had served the purpose, at least didn't disappoint. Among specialist bowlers, Yasir was brilliant, Hasan & Afridi did enough, only you can say it's Abbas who couldn't keep his penetrative standards, but he was mean and you can't get a better pacer than Abbas in UAE .

It's the 3 players picked on "all-round" merit cost PAK the biggest - MoHa has been in PAK team for God knows how many facets - off spin bowler, opening batsman, middle order batsman, slip fielder, batting all-rounder, professor, intellectual .... and he failed measurably with bat, didn't bowl either. Bilal is just not good enough to be a Test quality spinner, and he did nothing for a No. 8 batsman. 3rd one is Sarfraz, who is picked in multiple considerations - not the best WK in country, not the best batsman among WKs in country and the chosen one Captain but who is again not good at that job either.

So, basically 7 specialist, 1 nephew and 3 bits & pieces "all-rounders" to provide "balance" in XI. AND, THOSE LAST 4 WERE ABSOLUTE EMBARRASSMENT; not the specialists ones.

Recent embarrassment could have turned into a convincing victory, might be even by 3-0, had these 3 "multi facet" players could have been replaced by 3 specialist -
    1. Azhar opening and one of Usman, Saad or Saud debuting instead of MoHa
    2. Bilal dropped for a specialist SLAO Spinner - Asghar or Gohar &
    3. Sarfraz "rested" for Rizwan to WKeeping and Azhar or Asad leading the side (won't do worse in "tactics").
Add to that the 4th point - nephew out for Fakhar ........ it was 3-0 written, at least 2-0 before 3rd Test.

    Very decent interview.

He knows now that his batsmen are hopeless and that he will need the runs of Shadab, Faheem and Amir to give Amir, Abbas and Afridi something to bowl at.

The real worry is that he is still considering playing Yasir Shah.

ABU DHABI: Disgruntled coach Mickey Arthur demanded his players toughen up and seize key moments in Test matches after sloppy batting handed New Zealand an away series win over Pakistan for the first time in 49 years.

New Zealand pulled off a come-from-behind 123-run victory in the third and final Test in Abu Dhabi on Friday to end their long wait for a 2-1 series win.

Pakistan had dismissed the Kiwis for 153 in the first innings of the first Test in Abu Dhabi only to lose by a narrow four-run margin.

Pakistan bounced back by winning the second Test in Dubai by an innings and four runs but again failed to build a sizeable lead in the first innings of the third Test, a fact Arthur believes cost them the series.

"We missed opportunities and despite winning most of the sessions in the two losses we could not grab the moments to force a win," Pakistan coach Arthur told AFP.

"It was our series to win but we ended up as the losing side and that's highly disappointing."

Arthur said Pakistan not gaining big leads in the first and third Tests was crucial.

"We have to have a look at our batting on the last day and that is tough in the UAE," said Arthur.

Pakistan lost all ten wickets on the final day in both the defeats. They have now lost all ten wickets on the final day six times since Arthur joined in May 2016.

Apart from the three occasions in Abu Dhabi -- against Sri Lanka last year and twice against New Zealand in this series -- they also collapsed at Birminghm, Hamilton and Melbourne -- all in 2016.

Arthur said he backs his players, especially under-fire senior batsmen Azhar Ali and Asad Shafiq.

"The quality is there as they are the best players in Pakistan who are working very very hard and I back them to the hilt," said Arthur.

"But we need to be tougher in the crucial moments and that comes to us grabbing moments and being tough and we could not do this in this series which is disappointing."

He added: "I will defend Asad and Azhar to the hilt. Asad is a wonderful player. I rate him very highly and I still feel his best days are ahead of him."

Arthur now hopes Pakistan can do well in South Africa, a country where they have won only two Tests and were thrashed 3-0 on their last tour in 2013.

"I reckon we can go to South Africa and do well," said Arthur.

"I believe and trust in these players, we have got some very talented cricketers and some good young players.

"We need to nail down our good positions which we are not doing and that's the problem area."

The first of three Tests starts in Centurion from December 26.

Delusional or just trying not to speak the truth in public that our team is about to create world records for the lowest ever score in test cricket? 3-0 to SA is a formality at this point.

What has happened to Mickey Arthur, He is such an experienced International Coach. He is expecting his tail end batters to solve the batting issues and expects them 100 runs from last four when top four are failing to provide good batting in such fourth innings chases. More over Tests in south africa these days are low scoring ones, where avg score per inning will be 250-275. If as wished by the coach the tail gives him 100 runs in each test the series will be clean sweep win for Pakistan.
I had never seen a coach blaming tail end batters for unsuccessful chase. The top and middle order has to take the blame for such situations

Mickey it's all good praising Imam ul Haq and backing him in press but

He is in absolute shambles at the momemt especially on bouncers. Could be dangerous playing him as Rabada, Steyn & Oliviers will aim for chin music and he (Imam) is out of sorts completely.

Mickey Arthur you can find footage of Imam ul Haq a couple of season's back (Imam's technique hasn't changed an inch since than). He was top scoring opener of QEA but in final He looked all at sea vs Mohammad Asif the magician.

" Asif perfectly sets up Imam ul Haq "

Vernon Philander at 78, 79 mph is going to do the same thing to Imam ul Haq in SA.

So please ask Azhar who averages 41+ outside Asia as an opener to Open with Fakhar Zaman and backup opener for series should be Shan who is fresh off 352 runs vs NZ A at SR of 72 @85 with 2 FC hundreds in 2 matches.
