    Mohammad Abbas as Test captain?

I was thinking about this and it may sound far fetched but what about making Abbas our test captain? Pakistan have historically had fast bowlers captain before. I don't think Abbas has any prior experience of captaincy in domestic cricket before?

But it is an outside of the box idea, what do you fellow pp'ers reckon?

It will just ruin the bowler Abbas which is most needed for Pakistan at this moment.

Who would you suggest as captain instead? I rather see someone like Abbas than either Asad or Azhar being captain. And no one else is able to hold down a spot in the test side. Babar is still establishing himself as a test player. And I have seen some people suggesting FZ but he has only played the 1 test match.

    Should do decently in SA.

Every out of the box idea isnít necessarily good. If he doesnít have any experience of captaining local sides, how can one expect him to do well as captain of the national side?

Making him captain because Pakistan has historically had fast bowler captains is a very bad logic.

Babar Azam in my opinion. He will establish himself as a good test batsman soon. He is more positive in approach, he has captaincy experience in under 19 level.

Not now and not in future either - he is already too old for that. I do suggest a bowler as Captain for PAK team, so that batsmen can play without extra pressure but Abbas is still too raw. At one point long back I wonít have opposed Asif as Test Captain but not Abbas or Yasir.

For the time being Sarfraz must take team to SAF - if he is to be dropped, then it should be in the form of ďinjuryĒ and the deputy can take over on temporary basis. Otherwise, I donít think itís fair to the newly appointed captain to take charge for such a tough tour. PAKís next Test is after WC and Sarfraz might come back again for 2 more years if new captain suffers heavy losses in SAF which will be a disaster- disaster situation.

Sarfraz must lead team in SAF for all 3 formats and then there can be a proper assessment if he belongs to WC plan or not. I think, after SAF, he himself will resign from Test captaincy while he isnít doing that much damage to T20 side, where all 11 players are not needed in a 20 over game - performing 5 bowlers, 3-4 batsmen & a WK to do the first basemanís job is enough, so Sarfraz can be hidden in T20 XI as Captain till 2020 WC.

Most complex problem is ODI - 5 months before WC, ideally one shouldnít change the captain, specially when there is no readymade one at hand, but in WC, PAK canít go with a dummy hand in playing XI and when there is a back up WK performing tremendously. So, SAF ODI should be last cut off time - if Sarfraz can survive, he should lead the side in WC, other wise new Captain should be given 10 hard fought ODIs against Aussies & Poms to prepare for WC (and Sarfraz out of squad - continuing sacked captain in squad isnít a great idea, it suggests his failure as leader, rather as player).

In SAF, I donít bother much about team results, as long as they are fighting every game but Sarfraz must not hide behind team. Even 0-5 is acceptable for him, if his own performance is good, because I donít think there is any genius waiting - Sarfraz isnít the worst Captain for LOs among availables; we have seen Misbah & Azhar. I wish, they donít replace a specialist Captain with another one (Read MoHa) for WC. I would like to see Amir as deputy for ODI leg and preferably lead 1-2 games in SAF while Sarfraz is ďrestedĒ for Rizwan to keep.

Sarfraz is very likely to resign as captain after we get smashed in SA, I also think having a bowler as captain is a great idea; Aamir is not an option for various reasons and Abbas is still a bit green. So what are the alternatives, Junaid Khan ? but his cricketing journey mostly involves trips to the hospital, Hasan Ali would be a left field choice, am not sure what his experience is but he could be too young and a guy like graeme smith comes once in a lifetime

Next 2 Test series should be, at least expected to be soft - SRL & BD in UAE; so best time toaoooint a new Captain; may be Babar or even FZ, because Asad & Azhar by then will be officially 33 or older.

ODI is real problem. Malik could have been a stop gap solution for WC, but he himself is a question mark for WC in UK. Also, guy comes from Sialkot - if he replaces sacked Sarfraz, Karachi media will ruin his private life, which might discourage him (on field team is not going to transform overnight, whoever is made captain).

There is no realistic option apart from Amir, but I understand the baggage the carries with.

Abbas as a bowler has two great qualities, patience and intelligence.

He can bring those qualities as a captain and would be a good stop-gap, until someone else is found or nurtured.

For me, Azhar would be my pick as captain and he was picked as captain in a format where he didn't even belong or had any experience of.

Either one of Azhar, Yasir or even Abbas would be good.

ODIs is Amir's worst format, he deserves a place on the merit of bowling in the ODI team less than Sarfraz on the strength of his batting. Test in places like SAF is OK, his Test stats in the last year are actually decent, but not ODIs until we see a dramatic change.

But Sarfraz needs stay in T20, it is not that he is "not doing damage"; he is the world's best T20 captain, and by a mile the best option for Pakistan; we can see that on the field and in the results. Makes good decisions, keeps well, and bats well enough. Rizwan can play as specialist bat in T20 and ODIs if his performance merits it, that is fine.

    Captain?

There are not much alternatives as the two most capable individuals for the job have major flaws.

Babar: Young, Scoring runs, Mental Midget, Selfish.

FZ: Able, Stoic, Burdensome under too much responsibility.

I would go with FZ regardless and make Babar VC.

We have argued on many points, last one was why Abbas canít keep a 6 wickets/Test strike rate at 16 average over a 5-6 years career, before NZ series ... this Amir one is latest.

Personally, I'll pick Amir as 1st name in PAKís ODI squad, particularly for a WC in UK.

I also agree - Sarfraz should be allowed to win the 2020 WC. Worldís best T20 captain with a side racking up 136 ranking points - a combo made in havens. That T20 WC is waiting for Sarfraz to pick up & walk past the MCG gate.

And then blast him if he loses a series? Time is ripe to make Babar the T20 captain to ease him into captaincy. I know Sarf took the team to No.1 status but he will not be part of any good team with those batting performances. ODI captaincy will be with Sarf until WC with Babar to take over right after. Azhar Ali should be the test captain with Babar as his deputy. Eventually, Babar should be the captain in all formats by the time Azhar retires.

Azhar should be the captain for only tests and the most deserving candidate in my opinion.

Appointing young captains doesnít really work in Pak team culture. Nonsense was made by Waqar n Misbah by making the ODI captain where he didnít have any experience at all.. he is groomed for test captaincy and he is a consistent performer in tests.

He should be the captain for tests till he retires. Chuck Sarfraz out if he doesnít score any runs and give chance to Rizwan. I have a feeling where Sarfraz will sit out for the 3rd test to give chance to Rizwan and also a captaincy chance to someone as I foresee things going horribly bad for Sarfraz as wk, batsman and as captain.

Our test team only has 2 proven world class players in Abbass and Yasir. I would not want to add more burden on them. We really need to find a batsman who can captain. Only name I can think of is Babar Azam at the moment but he looks a bit immature from his personality.

PCB may need to do a Misbah and bring back some old mature head into the test team and make them captain. May be Fawad Alam?

Azhar Ali should be the test captain. He's the only batsman that merits his place in the squad. Drop Sarfaraz and bring in Rizwan as the WK.
