    Australia vs India | 2nd Test | Perth | Dec 14-18, 2018 | Day 1 Thread

Australia showed plenty of fight in the fourth innings of the Adelaide Test against India, but eventually fell short by 31 runs. They will hope to go one step further when the teams clash again in the second Test in Perth, starting on Friday, 14 December.

The hosts will be pleased with their bowling returns in Adelaide, particularly from Nathan Lyon. The off-spinner, who clinched a five-wicket haul in India's second innings, consistently troubled the batsmen, and continued to underline his importance in the home side's attack.

That said, in seam-friendly conditions in Perth, it's the pacemen who will be crucial, and if Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc, who picked up four and five wickets respectively in the first game, can carry on their wicket-taking form, Australia have reasons to be confident.

But while Australia's bowlers went toe to toe with India's, their batting performance was underwhelming. Aaron Finch is struggling for form, and his failure in each innings only heaped pressure on the middle order.

The home side will be desperate to improve on the batting front, and if they can do that, they have every reason to be confident, especially given India's own concerns.

The visitors will be without Ravichandran Ashwin – the off-spinner who picked six wickets in Adelaide – Rohit Sharma and Prithvi Shaw, all of whom are injured. The absence of Shaw means KL Rahul and M Vijay will have another opportunity to impress at the top of the order.

While Rahul did that to an extent in the second innings in Adelaide, question marks hang around Vijay, who was dismissed for 11 and 18 in his two outings in the first Test.

It is their pacemen who won them the first Test, though. Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami and Ishant Sharma picked up 14 wickets over two innings, and they will hope to continue their sizzling form in favourable conditions in Perth.

The only concern is fatigue – India's four-bowler strategy left the pacemen with plenty to do in Adelaide, and it remains to be seen whether India stick with that. Both Umesh Yadav and Bhuvneshwar Kumar have been included in the 13-man squad announced on the eve of the match, and one of them could be included in the final XI.

    Key players

Virat Kohli (India): The Indian captain scored an important 34 with the bat in the third innings of the first Test, but such are the lofty standards he has set himself, the lingering feeling was that it was an underwhelming innings, especially considering he has previously scored three centuries in Adelaide. He will want to make his mark in Perth.

Usman Khawaja (Australia): With 601 runs in eight matches at an average of 49.92, Khawaja is Australia's leading run-scorer in Tests this year. The left-hand bat is a vital cog for the home side, especially given the inexperience of the middle order, and India will be desperate to dismiss him early.

    Conditions
Perth is expected to be typically hot on Friday, with the temperature rising to 36°C. That said, scattered showers are forecast on the third day. The pitch is, traditionally, full of pace and bounce and the fast bowlers are expected to have a riot.

    Squads

Australia: Tim Paine (c), Mitchell Marsh, Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins, Aaron Finch, Peter Handscomb, Marcus Harris, Travis Head, Usman Khawaja, Nathan Lyon, Shaun Marsh, Peter Siddle, Mitchell Starc, Chris Tremain

India: Virat Kohli (c), M Vijay, KL Rahul, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, Hanuma Vihari, Rishabh Pant (wk), Ravindra Jadeja, Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Umesh Yadav

Aus winning toss means Aus is likely to win here. I will say 90-10 in favor of Aus here.

So with a weak batting lineup on a green pitch kohli went with umesh instead of bhuvi it's like the man doesn't want to win.

This guy is real dumb! It means he wants around 20 overs a day from his 4 express fast bowlers assuming Vihari bowls 10 and also weakens the batting by not playing Bhuvi. I don't even know what to say? I think he expects Australia to be all out by lunch, only that can explain his thinking.

Only pathetic batting from Aus in first inns can save India. The kind of team India have picked is geared for a 3-3.5 day finish.
If Aussies bat time and bowl dry to Indian top order, they should be able to level series here

Bhuvi should have been picked ahead of Umesh. Also Jadeja could've helped with the spin. Both would have strengthened the batting too.

    More weird selections by Kohli/Shastri.

Ishant is mentally drained due to the no ball controversy.
Bumrah was all over the place..

No spinner in the side, No Bhuvi in the side, quite a controversial team selection. Time will tell but at this moment I think India have started this test on the back foot.

I honestly expected India to run through the top order in the morning, but Australia have started very nicely weith their usual fast paced run rate. Just 12 overs bowled in an hour too, so the over rate has been poor as well.

Will this be remembered as another overseas test where Kohli selected the wrong XI?

Will Kohli be banned for slow over rate?

You know a team has messed up a selection when 5 overs into a test match you start thinking we needed one of the non picked players in the team. Also can we at last stop with the umesh spraygun yadav experiment he should be picked only if others are out injured, he will never be consistent enough to be a decent bowler in test cricket.

Finch is such a poor test batsman. Getting outbatted by a newbie and comfortably so. Only following the match on cricinfo so not sure how the Indians have bowled but there is definitely something in the pitch for them to exploit.

Kumar isn't a better pace bowler than Umesh. Both are pretty mediocre. Jadeja should have been played though.

Their bowlers won't be spray gun shooting as ours seem to be and unlike our ones they won't be tired by tea as they will have a spinner taking much of the work load.

Kohli averages 57.16 in Australia with 5 100s and 2 50s a grand total of 1029 runs from only 10 tests, he failed in the first test so 150% chance he is going to score a big one this test.

Kumar is a line and length bowler who can keep it tight and will get swing in helpful conditions umesh has none of those qualities, he is a magic ball bowler who will take 2-3 wickets while bowling boundary ball every over.

Our tail is already very week and he plays a spray gun yadav who does not give an ounce of control instead of a spinner who can at least tie an end

You know he is not a captain material when the home team declared test team a day before and that includes a spinner.but our captain selected all pace team which is already tired from first test

The bowlers have managed to calm down the scoring rate. I guess Aussie batters are intent om surviving the lunch session with all 10 wickets in hand.

And just as I type this :

Nah I know kohli, I know our bowlers. Only thing saving us this game is if the pitch doesn't crack, we might get away with a draw but right now 90-10 Aussies.

Draw is out of question with both batting lineups so brittle.

Kohli’s a good leader, I suppose. That’s only for his teammates to decide.

But tactically, it has been objectively obvious over a period of time and from a modest sample size that, almost no tests have been won by him because of his smarts, but because of heroics in relation to him and/or his players. Be it, team selection or in-game strategies.

    He reactive instead of proactive.

Who here thought using pace bowlers exclusively was a good idea before the game started?

    It is looking so odd.

Australia has a spinner in their eleven but India hasn't any.

Have Kohli and Shastri become drunk? No spinner? Why not Jaddu playing?

19 runs scored off the last 15 overs. Bowling has been better.

For those watching live, Is this pitch producing pace and bounce or did Australia con India into leaving out their spinner?

This is a lesson to sometimes not become too theoretical and use basic common sense. When your traditional strength is spin, a spinner has taken 6 wickets in the previous game and these Aussie batsmen aren't known to be the best players of spin in the world, you need at least one full-time spinner in your lineup.

Was absolutely shocked to not see a front-line spinner in the Indian squad. I am thinking that Kohli probably reads PP and got sucked into the hype created by my Indian friends about this legendary quartet of fast bowlers that India now have.

Jokes apart, no matter how fast bowler friendly a pitch is, always have a wrist spinner in the squad. And with India having one real good one, they definitely missed a trick.
