    Australia vs India | 4th Test | Sydney | Jan 3-7, 2019 | Day 3 Thread

Cheteshwar Pujara's marathon 193 and Rishabh Pant's swashbuckling 159* helped India declare at a mammoth total of 622/7 against Australia on day two of the fourth and final Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Australia ended the day at 24/0, 598 runs adrift of the India total, with Usman Khawaja (5) and Marcus Harris (19) holding fort.

India began Friday, 4 January, on 303/4 with Pujara and Hanuma Vihari at the crease, with the duo having already added 75 runs for the fifth wicket. Vihari, however, could add just three runs to his overnight total of 39 as Nathan Lyon gave Australia an early breakthrough.

Pant and Pujara then settled down to frustrate Australia throughout the morning session. Their 89-run stand saw India cross the 400-run mark.

Pujara, who was dropped by Khawaja at 192, seemed primed to get his third double century in Test cricket. However, the No.3 fell just one run later, scooping one back to Lyon for a soft dismissal. Pujara made the long walk back to the pavilion, but not before the entire SCG rose in admiration of his immense effort.

Ravindra Jadeja and Pant then collaborated for the highest partnership of the series. The two left-handers remained assertive through the innings, adding 204 runs in just 230 deliveries.

Jadeja slammed seven boundaries and a six to notch up a 114-ball 81, playing the perfect second fiddle to Pant, who raced away to his highest Test score of 159*. This is the second three-figure score of the youngster's nascent international career.

It was after Jadeja's dismissal he was bowled by Lyon that skipper Virat Kohli called his batsmen back to give his bowlers a crack at the Australia openers before stumps.

India had a golden chance in the third over, when a peach of a delivery from Mohammed Shami caught the edge of Khawaja's willow. Pant, however, could not add to his heroics of day, dropping the catch despite making a timely dive to his right.

Indians will take boring draw any time after being up 2-1 here. It's a stupid pitch to give when you need to win a game.

India should have batted on day 3 too till the pitch breaks. Less movement for pace bowlers today than day 1 and 2.

Groundsman has only been in the job a year and he's been experimenting all season (moisture level, grass length etc in different ratios) to try and come up with a pitch that works either with some seam or drier to let it break up. He hasn't quite got it right and the test pitch was another combo he hadn't actually tried before.

So this is not a wicket that can be readily made to order by flicking a switch, the groundsman is really batting to understand it and fix it. It hasn't always reacted to his preparations the way he wanted or even expected.

So it looks like Aus would have a chance if India scored only 450. Too bad Starc and Cummins couldnt buy a wicket even if they begged.

If they bat today and tomorrow with 3.5 RPO they will have near 650 going into 5th day.

Aus to take a 125 runs lead and then India collapsing to end with 2-2. That's the only chance Aus has. Warne is out of his mind to suggest Aus declaring when too far behind.

This is possible. If Aus bat at quick pace, they can have a lead by the end of tomorrow.

Didn't understand Aussie logic here, probably with their cricket skills, management competence is also taking a nose dive. They are trailing 1-2 here in last Test, and common sense tells, this Test should have ended in 4 days, if not 3; but looks like we'll have 1st innings completed after Day 4.

620 are too many to be honest. All it will take something from pitch and wickets will fall.

I didn't expect that. I was just talking about Warne making comment about declaring when Aus is 200 runs behind.

But spinners will nicely settle into a rythm. One could catch the glove. Only way you can do is by counter-attacking.

Not much turn or uneven bounce. But yah see your point.

it's just that all wickets came with playing shots.

Wicket came due to cover driving. Turn is not enough to get beaten when playing defensive shots.

Did you see the previous 5 balls. Nice set up. And he beat him in flight. It definitely looked like a half volley for me. But he beat him in flight.

I wonder how many of the top 6 will be selected for the Ashes.

wonder if India blundered by including Ashwin for so many of the overseas tests. Jadeja/Kuldeep could have been far more potent. What do you guys think?

Has anyone ever seen such pathetic batting from Australia before? I would attribute to pure bowling, but now its quite apparent how weak this batting line up is.

Nope, none of them seem good enough to be playing international cricket let alone for Australia.

4 Tests over and not one of their batsmen could score a 100.

You could argue Cummins has been their best batsmen for the series... A bowler being a candidate for best batsmen across a 4 Test series...

Not against a full strength Eng and RSA outside of India.

Rain may have helped because it wasn't turning before the rain came. I don't see Aus surviving long in second inning if turn becomes bigger.

Nope, even earlier it was steven smith and david warner who used to rescue their batting single handedly. Without them, Australia have clearly turned into minnows.

Both of them are very good bowler, but Ashwin overall is their primary spinner.

Hmm ok, but somehow, these two seem to bring more results. Jadeja scores more than Ash and Kuldeep takes more wickets. Of course I could be wrong as I dont see every test.

Meanwhile, another point to ponder.. Should Virat enforce the follow on or bat again. My guess is he will opt to bat again, give his batters more practice and totally exhaust Aussie bowlers.

When you play against an awesome side batting line ups will look pathetic. India bowled out SA team with AB under 200 for 3 times in 6 innings. This same batting would make a meal of average teams.
