Every great thing originates somewhere and spreads. India's street life and culture is a world of its own which has so far only come out to public view through movies and web series. Rap music has given a new platform for brothers in the hood to express themselves artistically.

Don't know about small towns but in Delhi, Mumbai, Punjabi cities hip hop culture is thriving. You could say they were a bunch of western wannabes few years ago. Today there is authentic stuff coming in regional languages throwing light on real experiences.

As with everything people laugh and make fun of anything new and when it thrives they eat their words and become followers.

Rap in hindi using similar beats as American rap is lame. American Rap works with those beats because of their slang etc.

It needs to figure out its on beat structure. Like London rappers were able to come out of the shadow of the Americans by having a faster paced rap, now called Grime. BTW Grime is not just rapping with a British accent. The beat structure, the tone and subject matters are different.

Indian rap, if it ever becomes mainstream, will need to carve out its own niche, by subject and technicalities.

That was back in 2010 but I think it was banned by Pakistan authorities. The artist in your first post is definitely copying his style. But then Indians ripping off superior Pak tunes is par for the course, it's been going on for decades. And I say that as an impartial Brit.

Rap, metal, rock etc. are sub-cultures. Although, in India most of the followers do it for the sake of standing out or to look cool, there is a minority who embraces the music because they can relate to it. Dissing them is equivalent to dissing a football lover (read- premier league/ la liga) or UFC or heck, even cricket is not an indigenous sports.

However, this movie would be crap judging by the people involved, they already managed to screw up the rock genre with 'Rock On' series. Farhan Akhter & co are one of the crappiest wanna be in Hindi philam industry. Dil Chahta Hai was good and ahead of the time though.

I am a metalhead myself, I like the genre because it doesn't belive in sugarcoating everything and it has the balls to explore the darker side without glorifying anything or picking sides; plus the musicianship.
And no...linkin park is not metal 😋

The problem with most of us is that we diss anything and everything at the first glance without even trying. I find people outside of the sub-continent to be more open minded and always willing to experiment newer culture. It doesn't cost us anything to be a free-thinker!

    P.S. Indonesian president is a metalhead. 🤘

Probably the wrong song, this is more typical, and probably stylistically the one that Gully Boy is trying to recreate for the Indian market.

I thought the same as well but then I did some research and found out that Divine and Naezy(esp the former) have quite a following in India's underground rap scene. Have a listen to some of their songs

Was quite impressed to tell you the truth. BillyX otoh has his own style which his highly influenced by Punjabi rap scene. Rappers like Raftaar fall into that category.
    Here's one from Raftaar.

    https://youtu.be/uykOHAhId0Q

In fact the one who is actually similar to Divine and Naezy is Bohemia , the greatest Pakistani rapper of all time imo even though it's a shame that he had gone commercial these days.

Desi rap is in it's formative years so it would take some time for it to become mainstream.
BTW that Juttni Punjabi song is addictive as hell. Can't get the beat out of my head.

The Raftaar one I hope u know is a reply to Emiway

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTZkwKzd7l0

Also Divine has been there in bollywood but I guess you missed it, here is a song from Anurag Kashyap, which Nucleya (best Indian EDM imo) and Divine Collaborated.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_6Dda6gacFA&t=58s

Naezy is more raw, and somehow doesn't care about making his rap entertaining its more hard hitting, hopefully he realizes he has to make sure people listen and enjoy..

Thats a good song, but Punjabi market is different and there are many to give you an example:

So its tough to become big in that market(the above video has only 80k views, you can imagine the competition), Imran and Bohemia(the best) made it though..

I remember the days when i used to rap and write lyrics. The problem was the i used to rap in english which no one else was doing in the desi set up. With i didnt get enough response, i stopped doing it altogether.

What are you on about? Ahmed Ali Butt was doing it mainstream in the early 2000's.

This movie is the story of the few who didn't stop, hopefully Zoya has done justice to it.

For some reasons most mainstream Indian rappers are cringey.

For those that are into urdu / punjabi rap, listen to this (the first and last verse are in urdu and punjabi, but the second is in english):

Why do you trust him? Has he ever been in a single good movie? Biggest myth in Bollywood is that this guy is actually good. I guess when the standards are already low....

He was exceptional in many films. Going by Bollywood standards that is.

Rap in Hindi/Urdu or Punjabi just sounds lame. I don't think the languages fit. They are supposed to be melodious while in rap they sound too robotic, too restricted and fake.
