Quaid-e-Azam Trophy Grade II tournament 2018-19 - Discussion Thread

Misbah and Ahmad Shahzad to feature in Quaid-e-Azam Trophy Grade-II tournament

    • Ten teams to appear in the tournament to be played at five venues

    • Teams equally divided into two groups, top two from each group to feature in the semi-finals; final to be played at the Iqbal Stadium in Faisalabad from 6-9 February

    Lahore, 10 January 2019:

One of Pakistan’s most decorated captains, Misbah-ul-Haq, will be one of the start attractions of the three-day Quaid-e-Azam Trophy Grade-II, which will commence from Friday.

The 44-year-old veteran of 276 international matches and a scorer of 11,132 international runs will represent Faisalabad Region, which will be one of the 10 sides that will go head to head in the tournament which carries total prize money of PKR 950,000.

Apart from Faisalabad other regional sides taking part in the tournament include Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), Bahawalpur, Dera Murad Jamali, Hyderabad, Larkana, Abbottabad, Sialkot, Quetta and Karachi Blues.

The teams have been divided into two groups, with Group A comprising Bahawalpur, Sialkot, Faisalabad, AJK and Hyderabad. Their matches will be played at the Iqbal Stadium, Faisalabad and Mirpur Stadium, Azad Jammu Kashmir.

Teams in Group B are Abbottabad, Quetta, Larkana, Karachi Blues and D.M Jamali, and their matches will be played in Karachi at the National Bank of Pakistan Ground, State Bank of Pakistan Ground and United Bank Limited Sports Complex.

The top two teams from each group will qualify for the semi-finals, which will be played simultaneously from 1 to 3 February at the Iqbal Stadium, Faisalabad, and Mirpur Stadium, AJK, respectively.

The final of the tournament will be played at Iqbal Stadium, Faisalabad, from February 6 to 9.

As per the existing domestic cricket rules, relegation and promotion will apply; the tournament winner will seal a berth in the next edition of Quaid-e-Azam Trophy Grade I tournament.

Faisalabad region have a real star power in their ranks with Test icon Misbah-ul-Haq leading their campaign. He will be supported by opener Ahmad Shahzad also is also making a return to competitive cricket.

Misbah said he was keen to help Faisalabad move into the Grade-I competition. “The biggest motivation for me is to help Faisalabad regain their Grade-I spot. We were relegated last season and our aim is to qualify for first-class cricket again; this is what we can strive to do for our region.”

Misbah is also keen on transferring his experience to the upcoming players in the arena. He is also hopeful that competitive cricket in this event will help him in HBL PSL 2019 in which he will represent Peshawar Zalmi.

“Such events also provide an opportunity to work with younger players, to spend time with them to work on their game and transfer experience. On a personal note the tournament should help me prepare for the HBL PSL,” he admitted.

Misbah said he was glad to have Ahmad Shahzad in his side and felt this tournament was a good platform for the opener to regain his lost touch.

“I feel that the tournament will help Ahmad Shahzad get back into form, regain his confidence and prepare for the HBL PSL 2019. The three-day tournaments provide a great opportunity of spending a long time at the crease and improving one’s game.”

Meanwhile, Ahmad himself was raring to return to the cricket field and was hopeful of making a big impact ahead of an action-packed cricketing year.

“The last few months were very tough for me; I badly missed playing cricket especially since the sport is a childhood passion of mine and an integral part of my life. I am more focused than ever and have worked hard on improving my mindset and other aspects of the game.

“I am really looking forward to representing Faisalabad. Grade II is a platform from where a lot of players have emerged and I am eager to deliver to the best of my ability for my team.”

One of the main reason for a generation gap (of players) is this type of tournaments which allow regular FC players to participate, even 44 years old retired Captain as well. Ahmed I can understand as he is trying to make a come back, but PCB must have a policy on qualification for such non FC tournaments. If National players are playing here, then where are the U19 & U23 fringe players going to play????

For any domestic system, in any system, it has to be a tier based structure without over lapping. Same players are plying in every level means higher tier players are basically wasting their time & energy for mediocrity rather than spending time to develop their skill (& fitness) to next level, while lower tier & younger players are simply sitting idle - 5/6 years like this, there has to be a big hollow.

Even if PCB introduces a Top tier FC tournament with 8 teams, it's a must that top 120 players are given a central contract and they must not play in lower tier unless for a specific reason (like players coming from injury or ban used to play in Second XI County games). Also, I don't think in any other major cricket playing country they do it like this : split 8 months cricket season into few windows and different tier tournaments are played one by one, so that same few names can play in every tournament. It allows lots of quantity for few without much quality and nothing for rest.

Ideally, FC cricket season should be stressed between SEP to MAY (with 3 months window between NOV-FEB for PSL & other List A/T20 tournaments), where simultaneously all 3 tournaments are played and played for significant numbers of matches. Like FC with 8 teams (covering best best players across country) & 14 Home & Away games, next tier is Grade II tournament, where may be 32 teams in 4 regional groups play for same number of games each (14); finally a third tier which can be district cricket with over 1000 players. National players will participate in Top tier whenever possible. Each player will be allowed to register for may be all 3 tournaments and every week, apart from playing 14, rest players are allowed to play for his other lower tier teams, subject to convenience of schedule and transportation.

The idea is that, at same time 3 Tournaments are running - QeA (FC), Patrons Trophy (Grade II), and may be National Club Cup (Grade III) & PAK National team is also playing. For a player like Sarfraz, who is registered for 4 teams - Captain of PAK, Sindh State Team (FC), Karachi City (Grade II) & Nazmabad Cricket Club (Grade III) - his order of participation is from top tier to lower. This'll allow top players to participate always at their highest level, leaving enough space for younger players. Similarly, if a kid performs exceptionally in a lower tier game, he can always be drafted to higher tier for the next round.

...... in any style or method or formula, Misbah shouldn't be allowed to play any domestic game further.

Not fair at all to some of the younger and fringe players. There is a huge proportion of players that play in the actual first class competition. Just look at Karachi for an example.

Just look at the tournament prize money!!!!

It's not even equal to what most of the PCB useless officials make.
