Indian playing XI in ODIs - For how long will this torture continue?

I just checked the playing XI of India against the Aussies.

    ----

    *What it reads*

    Dhawan
    Rohit
    Kohli
    Rayudu
    Karthik
    Dhoni
    Jadeja
    Kuldeep
    Bhuvi
    Shami
    Khaleel

    *What I see*

    Gun opener 1
Gun opener 2 (albeit slow starter which hurts the team at times)
    Best bat in the world
    Useless
    Choker
    Shameless
    Namesake AR (impactless bat)
Gun spinner (but can't slog with bat)
Useless ODI pacer (can accumulate with the bat)
    Gun ODI bowler (useless bat)
    Upcoming ODI bowler (useless bat)

    ---

Ok India are without the services of Pandya and KL Rahul. The former would have made the playing XI while the latter warms the bench as usual.

I don't understand how the team management thinks that a middle order of Rayudu, Karthik and Dhoni, followed by a useless tail is going to help us win the WC?

India is winning ODI games in the last couple of years INSPITE of all these jokers. Not because of them.

If we are going to keep fielding atrocious playing XIs, then we deserve to get knocked out of the WC purely on principle.

Pandya would have played in place of Jadeja and Chahal in place of Khaleel.

Also remember Bumrah will play in place of Shami.

Dhoni will play till 2019 WC.

Pant should be in the team not Rayudu or Karthik. But its blantantly obvious that he is not being given a chance to protect Dhoni's place.

Even when we had our GREATEST ODI batting lineup ever in 2011, we were stretched to our very limits to win the WC.

If we remove even a SINGLE batsman from this lineup, we wouldn't have won the 2011 WC:

    Sehwag (SF flier)
    Sachin (QF knock, SF hero)
    Gambo (QF knock, Finals hero)
    Kohli (Finals crucial partnership)
    Yuvi (QF hero)
    Dhoni (Finals hero)
    Raina (QF & SF hero)

Every one from this champion XI stood up and fought tooth and nail to save India from many precarious positions.

Now compare that with our existing batting lineup.

    Dhawan
    Rohit
    Kohli
    Mayank
    Jadhav/ KL
    Pant/ Kartik
    Pandya
    Bhuvi
    Kuli

Why dont Indian management try out Shaw, Gill, Mayank.. WHy do they keep rotating Rayudu, kartik, Jadhav who dont inspire confidence? You guys have 13 ODI's to experiment, plus the IPL for match practise.

MSD is untouchable , so just keep your fingers crossed that he miraculously hits some form.

Hopefully once the CoA leaves we will have a better selection committee and not this comedy circus.

But the CoA seems to be in no mood to implement the Lodha reforms as implementation will mean their departure. They have been leaching onto BCCI for 2 years now.

Khalil is the weakest point in this line up followed by Rayadu. Khalil will leak runs, inexperienced and it is risky to play him in the big stage of WC. Pant is better than Rayadu, so replace him. Dhoni has huge experience and I think India will be benefitted by it. He is no longer fit for no 6 ,he should be played at no 5 as he has lost his hitting capabilities a lot. But Dhoni can take a grafter role. I am not sure about Karthik. Sometimes he seems to be a very good batsman with all gears ( I still can't forgive him for the Nidhas trophy final ) and sometimes ordinery.Jaddu is good.

    India should go with this

    Dhawan
    Rohit
    Kohli
    Rayudu
    Dhoni
    Kedar
    Hardik
    Kuldeep
    Chahal
    Bhuvi
    Bumrah

    Plus 5 reserves -
    Gill
    Pant
    Shami
    Jadeja
    Siraj/Khaleel

Rayudu, dhoni are trash but cant be dropped.Kedar is useful but only that and nothing more.

    Imagine this,

Pant plays in place of Rayudu and most likely will outperform Karthik and Dhoni.

So you have a wkt keeper batsman who is better than Dhoni. How will they then select Dhoni in tbe team?

    This is fixed selection.

I have made my peace with grandpa playing but this unbelievable stupidity that your best attacking finisher is supposed to sit out so that grandpa's ego doesn't get hurt is rubbish.

I would love for India to go on a 8-0 losing streak in Aus-NZ just to have some hope of captain clueless being replaced by Sharma as captain and thus dhoni getting the boot as we don't need a psuedo Captain anymore.

But a first round exit is unlikely due to Rohit Dhawan Kohli Bumrah and Kuldeep.

That's our biggest problem, we have a team that will win 8/10 games with these middle order idiots in the team but sadly for the last 2 we will need help and these idiots can't provide that and which means nothing changes as we still win 8/10 games.

Too late to blood in Pant since WC is like 6 months away and it will be too much pressure on him. Dhoni is unbearable to watch right now like someone in need of euthanasia.

This won't necessarily be the starting XI for WC. It's about getting right options and perfect team balance and currently India are trying to give games to everyone out there and eventually come up with a solid XI.

However, Dhoni has already occupied one of the options in middle order and that won't change. So, keeping that in mind, India need to figure out the team balance and best possible combination in the XI.

The current batting lineup seems too top order heavy, tbh I think both Rayadu and Karthik are bang average so there is a big weakness in that middle order. If I was the selector my lineup would be:

    1. Rohit
    2. Dhawan
    3. Kohli
    4. KL Rahul (very talented and needs to be given confidence, he won't be able to break in as an opener for another few years so should take the next best available spot, he has all the gears and is definitely better than both Rayadu and Karthik.
    5. Dhoni (wk) (Isn't going anywhere and seems to have lost his power hitting ability so should be played at 5 to rotate strike in the middle overs)
    6. Pant (Very talented, should be in at 6 for his power hitting abilities, too good to miss out).
    7. Pandya (Potential game changer with the bat, needs to work on the bowling though).
    8. Kuldeep
    9. Chahal/Bhuvi (Depending on the nature of the pitch)
    10. Shami (Good wicket taking bowler, should play ahead of Bhuvi)
    11. Bumrah

The only thing missing is a 6th bowling option, the only realistic thing India can do is either replace Dhoni/Pant with Kedar Yadav but that will weaken the batting lineup.

In terms of all round ability this lineup (without karthik and rayadu) in my opinion is the strongest team going into the world cup with no real major weaknesses in any department.

Torture might be partially over... Gill is coming.

I hope he is given a good number of games to prove himself.

I hope Shaw gets a chance somehow.. SHaw should be a cover for Dhawan... If not show, give Mayank a chance...

    This is fixed selection.
No doubt about it. Otherwise there is absolutely no point in playing 2 wicketkeepers in a playing XI when

    a) DK is completely out of his depth at this level and
    b) Dhoni has been averaing 24 and and striking at 73/74 in his last 31 matches and there's a sharp decline in his keeping skills.

All this has been done to accomodate Dhoni. Thats all.

    My XI: -

    Rohit
    Shaw
    Kohli
    Gill
    Pant(wkt)
    New Guy
    Pandya
    New Guy
    Kuldeep
    Shami
    Bumrah

That will be my XI for World Cup 2023. If Shami isn't good enough that time, he will be replaced by some other new guy.

Dhoni rivals Tendulkar in popuarity in India, kicking him out is much harder than any test player. Kohli has lots of power in the team, but nowhere near to drop Dhoni.

I thought Indian fans don't care about ODIs and that they were already satisfied with the Aus test series win. Why all these deep analysis on an ODI team?

If Dhoni wants to play let him play. He may just show his old self again at the WC. He just have to grow long hair and dye his beard back to dark again.

Dhoni won't go anywhere, sad as it is. Better make peace with the fact that India cricket can be held ransom to Dhoni's financial interest.

The Rayudus and Karthiks and Jadhavs are expendable. Unfortunately, Rayudu seems to have the full backing of Kohli. Perplexing, yes, but, once again, nobody is going to challenge Kohli if his mind is made up. The only hope is Rayudu stinking it up spectacularly.

The best XI India can hope to field, taking all the above into account is something like below.

    Rohit
    Dhawan
    Kohli
    Gill (provided Rayudu bombs)
    Dhoni
    Pant
    Pandya
    Bhuvi/Chahal
    Kuldeep
    Shami
    Bumrah

This team above is lopsided purely because of Dhoni. If he were to disappear, we could play someone like Krunal who can bat and provide a 6th bowling option.

Isn't this too fast for Gill and too late for WC 19? He just hit into scenes last year when India became U-19 champions.

He is 19 and at this point with zero experience not sure if he will be of more value than Rayudu, Karthik or Jadhav as far as WC 19 is concerned. We need to watch him in ODIs before getting into any conclusion.

Anyone who still supports Dhoni in Indian XI surely doesn't have best interests of Indian cricket in mind. This guy has become such an embarrassment, I don't know who was last such Indian legend who sullied his legacy as much as Dhoni has done over last 3 years!

I know this hoping against hope, just for Indian cricket's sake, I hope he still rediscovers his mojo back.

Shaw averages 40 with a SR of 116. I feel like there's a Gill love fest on this forum but Shaw to my mind is a superior talent. Maybe I am biased because I have always like short stature batsmen - Tendulkar, lara, Sehwag for example.

Just watch this short clip of Shaw and tell me your jaw didn't hit the floor.

I am always in favour of more chances to talented players. The more I see of Gill's videos, forces me to change my opinion and I do really believe that he could be a perfect no. 4 for India going ahead. Hope for the best as far as WC 19 is concerned.

    Karthik
    Dhoni
    Jadeja
    Kuldeep
    Bhuvi
    Shami

Why have u spared that trundler Khaleel?
    He doesn't even belong here
Used like he is a 5th bowler, over protected
    And can't bat

Yeah bro I agree we should drop Kohli also. We should play Murali Vijay in his place, he has 100 in IPL finals.

Saha should be backup keeper if Karthik and Dhoni are played as pure batsmen , considering they are best middle order batsmen for last 2 decades.

It's just unfortunate but we need to make peace with it. Dhoni and his buddies will stay for WC 201.. Our top 3 will do well and make us reach knockout stages, one game the top 3 will fail and our non existent middle order when expected to stand up will just play like test match and get us to a respectable loss.

Then Dhoni and his friends will retire.

It's respect to the Indian cricketing standards that they are unhappy with a team that wins more often than not and is about to induct two gun upcoming prospects in the next few months and one who has already been inducted but didn't play the Australia test series due to injury.

Pant and Gill will make it to Team India within the next few months, Shaw has already done that. That's some strength in batting. The future is so blue tbh.

This won't be the team for the World Cup, so don't worry. Cricketers like Shami and Karthik won't find places in a strong world cup squad. Dhoni might look like a weak link but he has the experience and capability to perform in important matches just like Gilchrist did in the final of 2003 World Cup after several failures. Rayudu could be a fixture as he can both strike at a good rate and also play the grafting part very well and also a good fielder.

Rayudu is a good fielder? In which universe? Let's evaluate what Rayudu did in the first game. Chucked a couple of half trackers that were duly dispatched. Parried a catch to a six and missed stopping at least 2 boundaries. Was late on a shot and out for duck. Selfishly tried very hard to reverse Rohit's initial assessment and stole a review that could have saved Dhoni. I have never seen anyone sabotage the team all the through the game like he did.

I read on another forum that Rayudu is apparently part of two camps and hence a certainty no matter how badly he performs. He's part of the CSK aka Dhoni camp. He also apparently comes from the same region as India's chief selector and speaks the same language. Can't bat, can't bowl, can't field but apparently the only guy in the team that has his foot planted firmly in multiple camps. Now that's one lucky chap I must say

Seriously disappointed with Khaleel. What a trundler he is. Bowls short at 130k. I read that he is a 140k+ bowler who can bowl yorkers and slower balls. Have not seen anything from him.

Right now Khaleel looks like a left handed Srinath in his early days. Only some 10kmph slower.

True. There is huge external influence that keep some of the deadwoods still in the squad. It is not going away. I made peace with myself that India will exit the first round of 2019 world cup. By now these youngsters should have played a substantial number of international games.

Pant and Gill will make it to Team India within the next few months, Shaw has already done that. That's some strength in batting. The future is so blue tbh.
Future is great but we have hurt ourselves with pathetic selections for too long.

I have lost the willpower to even post a lot about it. lol.

The emotional connection with the LOI team is just not there. It's the same if we win or lose. In fact, half of the time, I find myself rooting for the opponent hoping that would throw the deadweights out but it's just a dream.

This WC exit if it happens, won't be painful at all.

I am not one of you. I never was. I am not one of them either.

Can understand the sentiment but can't relate at all. This is truly the problem of abundance and also makes me proud of what India has achieved over the last decade or so.

Indian ODI selection is controlled by sponsors. There is nothing anyone can do about it. Otherwise guys like Dhoni would have been dumped long back.
