Sri Lanka tour of South Africa 2019

Sri Lanka axe skipper after Test defeat

Dinesh Chandimal dropped following his team's series loss to Australia

Sri Lanka have dropped captain Dinesh Chandimal from the Test squad for the upcoming tour of South Africa.
Selectors have asked him to play domestic cricket to regain his form.

Sri Lanka Cricket has appointed opening batsman Dimuth Karunaratne as stand-in captain of a 17-player squad for the two-Test series beginning February 13.

Chandimal’s omission follows scoes of 5, 0, 15 and 4 in their 0-2 series defeat to Australia.

The squad includes three uncapped players: batsman Oshada Fernando, seam bowler Mohmed Shiraz and left-arm spinner Lasith Embuldeniya.

Allrounder Milinda Siriwardana has been recalled for the Test squad for the first time in nearly three years.
The Tests are in Durban from February 13 and Port Elizabeth from February 21.

    Thats huge.

But not as huge as Saurav Ganguly getting dropped as captain in 2005 after Pakistan crushed India in India under legendary Inzamam ul Haq.

Yes CHandimal was supposed to lead from the front. Dropping him for form is fine.

Sri Lanka tour of South Africa 2019

Dimuth Karunaratne will lead Sri Lanka in their Test series against South Africa after regular captain Dinesh Chandimal was left out of the squad.

Chandimal will instead play domestic cricket in an attempt to regain form. He has made just one half-century on Sri Lanka's tours of Australia and New Zealand.

Karunaratne has been one of Sri Lanka's stand-out Test batsmen in recent times, having been named in the ICC Test Team of the Year 2018 and having made five half-centuries in his last six Tests. He has never captained his country before, with fast bowler Suranga Lakmal having led the side in Chandimal's absence in recent times.

Elsewhere, there have been several other changes to the squad which toured Australia. Wicketkeeper-batsman Sadeera Samarawickrama, batsman Roshen Silva, who made 61 runs in four innings in New Zealand and Australia, and off-spinning all-rounder Dilruwan Perera, who scored 61 runs at 8.71 and took six wickets at 94.33, have all been left out, while seamers Lahiru Kumara and Dushmantha Chameera remain injured.

In their places, Sri Lanka have recalled top-order bat Kaushal Silva and left-arm-spinning all-rounder Milinda Siriwardana, while uncapped players Oshada Fernando, Angelo Perera, Mohamed Shiraz, and Lasith Embuldeniya have also all been called up. Quicks Vishwa Fernando and Chamika Karunaratne, who were called up as replacements on the Australia tour, have retained their places.

Kaushal has three Test centuries and an average just under 30 from his 39 Tests so far, and recently hit 273 in Sri Lankan first-class cricket for Sinhalese Sports Club against Sri Lanka Army. Siriwardana has a Test batting average of 33 and a bowling average of 23 from his five Tests, and has been in sparkling recent form with the bat, scoring three centuries in three innings for Saracens and Sri Lanka A across the turn of the year.

Angelo Perera, who played six limited-overs internationals for Sri Lanka between 2013 and 2016, made history just days ago, becoming only the second player to hit two double-centuries in the same first-class game, while Oshada has been in similarly scintillating form, totting up six centuries in his last 14 first-class innings, culminating with knocks of 109 and 234 in the same game for Chilaw against Colts.

Slow left-armer Embuldeniya and right-arm seamer Shiraz are more inexperienced, but have enjoyed excellent starts to their careers. Embuldeniya has 125 wickets at 20.13 in his first 21 first-class games, while Shiraz recently claimed six wickets in a game against Ireland A.

The series begins on Wednesday, 13 February.

    Squad:

Dimuth Karunaratne (c), Niroshan Dickwella, (vc) Lahiru Thirimanne, Kaushal Silva, Kusal Mendis, Kusal Perera, Milinda Siriwardana, Dhananjaya De Silva, Oshada Fernando, Angelo Perera, Suranga Lakmal, Kasun Rajitha, Vishwa Fernando, Chamika Karunaratne, Mohamed Shiraz, Lakshan Sandakan, Lasith Embuldeniya

CRICKET SOUTH AFRICA (CSA) today called up 20-year-old bizhub Highveld Lions all-rounder Wiaan Mulder to the Standard Bank Proteas Test squad for the two-match Castle Lager Series against Sri Lanka starting next week.

Mulder was previously included in the squad for the Test Series against Australia last year but has still to make his debut, having been ruled out by injury for much of the current South African season.

This is the only addition to the Proteas Test squad that scored a clean sweep 3-0 series victory over Pakistan earlier this season.

“Wiaan has been part of our strategic thinking in developing a batting all-rounder for the Test squad for some time,” commented CSA National Selection Panel (NSP) convener Linda Zondi. “His injury in the white ball series against Zimbabwe last year came at an unfortunate time and we are gradually working him back into the Proteas set-up.

“We never want to rush players back from injury because that can be counter-productive, but he has now had a couple of good weeks of action in the 4-Day Domestic Series.

“For the same reason we are not going to rush Lungi Ngidi back into international action until he has had the time to gain full match fitness.

“After the convincing victory against Pakistan the selectors are looking to exercise consistency in the squad and at the same time to strengthen it through the inclusion of Mulder,” concluded Mr. Zondi.

Standard Bank Proteas Test squad: Faf du Plessis (Multiply Titans, capt), Hashim Amla (World Sports Betting Cape Cobras), Temba Bavuma (bizhub Highveld Lions), Theunis de Bruyn (Multiply Titans), Quinton de Kock (Multiply Titans), Dean Elgar (Multiply Titans), Zubayr Hamza (World Sports Betting Cape Cobras), Keshav Maharaj (Hollywoodbets Dolphins), Aiden Markram (Multiply Titans), Wiaan Mulder (bizhub Highveld Lions), Duanne Olivier (VKB Knights), Vernon Philander (World Sports Betting Cape Cobras), Kagiso Rabada (bizhub Highveld Lions), Dale Steyn (Multiply Titans)

SRI LANKA TOUR TO SA 2019

February 13-17 : 10h00, 1st Castle Lager Test match, Kingsmead, Durban
February 21-25 : 10h00, 2nd Castle Lager Test match, St. George’s Park, Port Elizabeth

Poor Chandimal. He got injured after 1 test vs England a few months ago. But prior to that he was really consistent scoring runs vs Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and the WIs. Yet after 4 bad test matches they've dropped him. Lol what is going on within SL cricket?

Chandimal shouldn't have been dropped. He should have been moved down the order where he has done a good job. South Africa should beat Sri Lanka in all formats. And they will probably continue to test more new players out.

'Want to be dominant' – Keshav Maharaj looks forward to Sri Lanka series

After South Africa's 2-0 drubbing in the away Test series against Sri Lanka last year, spinner Keshav Maharaj said it is payback time as his side are going to try to dominate the opposition in home conditions.

"Whichever team comes here we're pretty much going to try and dominate them. Especially Sri Lanka, who were really dominant against us in Sri Lanka," Maharaj said ahead of the two-Test series on Monday, 11 February. "Now they are in our conditions and hopefully we can put in a dominant display in the two Tests."

When South Africa last toured Sri Lanka in July 2018, they were handed heavy defeats in both the Tests by the hosts. Since that series, Faf du Plessis and his men have swept a three-Test series at home in December-January against Pakistan, and they would take the confidence into the next assignment.

Maharaj added that South Africa are not going to take anything for granted, saying: "Every series you play you want to be dominant and whitewash the opposition - for want of a better word.

"Playing here this should be our fortress. When people come here they should be on the back foot when they do take the field. But we're taking nothing for granted, whoever our opponents are."

South Africa currently have one of the best pace bowling department which features Dale Steyn, Vernon Philander, Kagiso Rabada and Duanne Olivier.

However, one major concern for the hosts would be the venues for the two Tests – Durban's Kingsmead and St George's Park of Port Elizabeth – which are both likely to provide at least some assistance to the spinners, which could work to Sri Lanka's advantage.

"At Kingsmead, it's not your swing and fast bowling wicket that we were used to 10 or 15 years ago," Maharaj pointed out. "The wicket will wear down and slow down significantly I would say. I think it's just a patience game at Kingsmead now.

"It's a little bit slower than expected. But with the sun about, it may make the wicket harden up and get a little bit quicker than what we're used to as well," he added.

South Africa don't have a good record in Durban having lost six out of the eight Tests they had played at the venue but they do have a decent record in Port Elizabeth, where they also have beaten Sri Lanka once in 2016.

Maharaj, who was the joint highest wicket-taker in the 2018 series against Sri Lanka, is confident, however, of South Africa's chances in the first Test at the venue.

"Things do change, and the mindset changes. This Test unit is a different team from what we were on previous occasions playing at Kingsmead. I am confident we can get over the line and change the mindset that's from the public, and from the players."

Dananjaya returns for SA ODIs as Sri Lanka ring the changes

Akila Dananjaya is set to return to international cricket after being included in Sri Lanka’s squad for the upcoming five-match ODI series against South Africa.

Dananjaya’s action has been declared as legal after undergoing remedial work, and he will resume his international career having last played for Sri Lanka in their Test series against England in 2018.

Dananjaya's inclusion is one of a number of changes to Sri Lanka’s squad. Experienced opener Upul Tharanga returns to the side having missed out on selection for the tour of New Zealand, while Oshada Fernando, who made his Test debut in Sri Lanka’s one-wicket win over South Africa in Durban last week, has received his maiden ODI call-up.

Others selected include: Avishka Fernando, Kamindu Mendis, Priyamal Perera, Isuru Udana and Vishwa Fernando. Angelo Perera, who recently became the second man in history to score two double centuries in a first-class match, has also been named in the 17-man squad.

Udana's inclusion is a particularly notable one – the left-arm seamer's last ODI appearance came against India in July 2012. However, after some impressive performances for Sri Lanka A against Ireland Wolves – Udana took 11 wickets in five List A matches – he now finds himself back in the 50-over reckoning.

Dinesh Chandimal, who missed out on selection for the Test series, has also been excluded from the ODI squad. The ODI series is Sri Lanka's last before squads for the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup are announced in April.

Sri Lanka have also announced a change to their squad for the ongoing Test series. Chamika Karunaratne, who made his Test bow against Australia at the start of the month, has suffered an injury and is to be replaced by Asitha Fernando.

The first ODI between South Africa and Sri Lanka is set to take place on 3 March in Johannesburg.

Missed Perera's knock on final day . 153 not out chasing 304 is outstanding .
    Rabada & Steyn bowled 40.3 overs out of 85.3 & took 3 for 168 . Poor . Why was DO underbowled at 35 for 2 from 16 overs ?
Port E , the venue of 2nd Test is another slowish surface & the groundsmen will have to water it liberally , allow a good grass cover & hope hosts win the toss & bowl . I would be disappointed if Philander is replaced by Theunis & not the all rounder Mulder .
    i guess 1-1 here .

"South Africa seamer Vernon Philander has been ruled out of contention for the second Test against Sri Lanka with a grade one hamstring strain.

The 33-year old, ranked at No.4 in the MRF Tyres Test Bowling Rankings and fifth in the charts for all-rounders, is slated to be out for 10-12 days, thus missing the final match of South Africa's home international summer.

21-year old uncapped all-rounder Wiaan Mulder is likely to come in as his replacement, as the Proteas look to bounce back from a remarkable one-wicket defeat in the first bout.

"Vernon’s got a grade 1 hamstring strain‚" said head coach and former West Indies fast bowler Ottis Gibson. "This is the last Test match of the summer and he’s pretty much out for 10 to 12 days‚ which rules him out of this Test match.

"We will look at the conditions and then we will try make the best decision for the team. Obviously‚ Mulder would be a like-for-like replacement for Vernon‚ so that is something that we will consider as well."

Gibson also heaped praised on Kusal Perera, Sri Lanka's fourth innings hero from the first Test who scored an unbeaten 153 to guide his side to an unlikely victory, putting on 78 with last man Vishwa Fernando. "There’s absolutely no focus on revenge," he said.

"We are just focusing on playing a little bit better perhaps. When you look at what happened in Durban you have to give them a lot of credit. We threw everything at him and he withstood all of that. We bowled spin‚ we went around the wicket‚ over the wicket‚ we bounced him‚ we tried to york him.

“We did everything. And that’s the nature of sport‚ sometimes‚ somebody has a day and he then makes a personal best score to win a Test match. The thing for us and sport in general‚ is there is always another opportunity to put things right and we are all very eager to get things started on Thursday."

The second Test begins on Thursday, 21 February from St George's Park."
