Pakistan vs West Indies | 2nd Match, World Cup | Nottingham | May 31, 2019 | Pakistan Innings

Pakistan have lost their last 10 completed one-day internationals, but can they set that right in their tournament opener against an equally unpredictable, but game, West Indies?
    Overview

    West Indies v Pakistan
    Trent Bridge, Nottingham
2019 ICC Cricket World Cup, Match 2
    Friday, 31 May; 10.30am local, 09.30am GMT

The two most unpredictable sides in the competition come face to face at Nottingham’s Trent Bridge. West Indies and Pakistan can be indifferent or spectacular. But on their day, there is no doubt that they can challenge, and beat, the world’s top sides.

Pakistan haven’t had the most ideal preparation for the tournament. They lost to Afghanistan in their first warm-up game, and their second, against Bangladesh, was washed out without a ball bowled. More worryingly, they have lost their last ten completed ODIs. Nevertheless, Pakistan at ICC tournaments have traditionally been a notch above what they are at other times. Every other team in the world found that out the hard way at the ICC Champions Trophy in 2017, and there is little reason to doubt that with a young squad bursting with talent, they can do it all over again.

Standing opposite them are West Indies, who held the world’s No.1 ODI side to a stalemate at home earlier this year. They have a batting line-up that is exploding with firepower. It gave them 421 runs in their last warm-up game, against New Zealand. But if you thought their batting is all about the big hits, then you’re wrong: Shai Hope, who is in the form of his life, is perfectly capable of staying at the crease and building the innings. In his last five ODI innings, Hope has reeled off scores of 170, 109, 30, 87 and 74. He also made a century in the warm-ups to boot.

Their bowling is slightly less-heralded, but with a solid pool of all-rounders to tap into, they have several options on that front. And besides, if the batsmen show up in the mood that they did against New Zealand, they’re going to have plenty to play with.

    Key players

Mohammad Amir (Pakistan): The paceman has been brought with a purpose, and that is to add value with his experience. Amir brings past success in England and has all the skill-sets to succeed in these conditions, especially if swing is on offer, he is at his most devastating.

Andre Russell (West Indies): Not only does Andre Russell severely bruise bowling attacks, he also does it from pretty low down the order, meaning teams can expect very little respite if they do manage to cut through the rest of the top and middle order.

    Conditions

Nottingham is expected to be cloudy for the most part, with some sunny intervals in between. Rain is expected to stay away, but the overcast conditions could make Gayle against Amir and Wahab Riaz an intriguing contest.

    Squads

Pakistan: Sarfaraz Ahmed (c), Asif Ali, Fakhar Zaman, Hasan Ali, Imam-ul-Haq, Mohammad Hafeez, Shadab Khan, Shoaib Malik, Babar Azam, Haris Sohail, Imad Wasim, Mohammad Amir, Mohammad Hasnain, Shaheen Afridi, Wahab Riaz

West Indies: Jason Holder (c), Fabian Allen, Darren Bravo, Shannon Gabriel, Shimron Hetmyer, Evin Lewis, Nicholas Pooran, Andre Russell, Carlos Brathwaite, Sheldon Cottrell, Chris Gayle, Shai Hope, Ashley Nurse, Kemar Roach, Oshane Thomas

West Indies's 421 is flattering to deceive. I believe there is a chink in their armory and it can be exploited by Pakistan. A positive result for Pakistan can be vital to kickstart a long and difficult campaign for us.

Yes shaheen normally picks up a wicket in the powerplay but he has also been tonked around in the last few games and that was the reason we lost to afghans. Think what Wi batskan would do to him.

Par score at trent bridge now is around the 400 mark... dead pitch, boundaries brought in..

Can see another run feast here. Unless we take wickets early on i can see W.I batsmen having a field day with our bowling.

Do we bat first if we win toss and set an intimidating total? Or bowl first and exploit the overcast conditions (which could backfire and lead to a 400 plus score that knowing our history, we'll never be able to chase)?

We should bat first, the Windies won't be able to handle pressure if we post 300.

Pakistan needs to win the toss, otherwise we might see the first 400 in a WC.

10.30 start , a bit cloud cover at Nottingham is a must bowl first . Defending is tough on this pitch too . Toss is massive IMO .

As Pakistan supporters, we are blessed to have all of Haris Sohail, Babar Azam and Imam Ul-Haq. I cannot remember a period when we've had at least 3 naturally gifted, classy and quality batsmen.
Watching them ply their craft is a delight. If fit, these 3 players must be in our team in all 3 formats of the game.

I hope Fakhar finds some form, and if he does, we will have a batting attack that will match anyone's.

If we bat first, I have no doubt we will win comfortably.

Mohammed Amir and Hasnain should be playing. They are our only pace bowlers that showed a bit (despite not playing much). Amir has experience and has moved the ball more than others. Hasnain has unpredictability and raw pace, and some x-factor - Windies will take a few overs to work him out.

    As a captain, that is.

Great to see him having matured from a lanky 23 year old with no idea where he was to leading the Windies to greatness. There has certainly been a resurgence of the West Indies and I accredit Holder for that.

Pakistan need to survive first 10 overs. Hopefully windies dont get any movement as there is cloud cover.

    batting first
haris sohail instead of asif ali. how stupid can you possibly be to pick that useless cricketer. haris sohail should not have been in the squad, let alone in the first XI.

Might be blown away in the first 10 here. WI batting is so deep compared to ours. We don't have a single hitter. They have 8.

West Indies batting line up looks scary. Shame we lost the toss. Good decision selecting a proper batsman Haris above hit and miss Asif.

Brother, I believe Haris will prove your statement wrong. He is a magnificent batsman, and what's more, his batting is beautiful to watch. Win win in my opinion.
    Such a naturally gifted batsman.

Amazing that they have left out Roach. Their bowling looks weak and it's now up to Pakistan to exploit it. But the weakness in their bowling also means that they have a killer batting lineup and therefore we have to rack up a big total.
