ICC World Cup 2019 : Points table, Net Run Rates, qualifying scenarios & Stats thread

Alright so i believe the net run rate will come into handy later in the tournament. Pakistan has a worst NRR atm and with that i believe they will have to now win 7 out of the 8 remaining games in order to avoid NRR.

The odds of them winning 9 out of 8 games are higher than winning 7 out of 8 games atm. Forget about Pakistan. Enjoy the tournament. So many teams have never been that much stronger before in any ICC event. & yes do keep an eye on NRR as it will matter for others this time.

Pakistan's net run rate has been so severely damaged that there's no point of even discussing it.
Pak now can't go through with 5 wins. 6 is the bare minimum may be even 7.

4th finalist would have to win 5-6 games. 5 is theoretical and NRR will come into play and 6 will surely seal it.

Just look at this yearís IPL table.

Losing this game basically means we've been knocked out of the tournament. That's why this game was so important. We ain't beating India, England, or Australia. So we had to win the 6 other games 5 will not be enough. Heck I'm stupid to think we'll get even get 5 wins. I need to stop being so optimistic with this team. An 11 match losing streak is too much.

Winning 6 games means we have to beat Ban, Afg, SL, South Africa, New Zealand, and one of India, England, and Australia. We just lost to the 4th most beatable team for us behind Ban, Afg, SL. How in the world do you expect us to beat SA, NZ, and Ind/Eng/Aus?

By the time we finish the England game our NRR will be in double digits.

    Minus I mean.

And this thread will have died.

We might end up losing 7 out of 8 remaining matches, question is which team will end up loosing to Pak?

So basically WI has knocked us out in the first game. Just canít lose in this manner. It was absolutely horrible. I am 100% sure Kenya or China wouldíve done better. They surrendered completely. Donít expect anything from this team of cowards. They will sledge Afghani and Canadian players but become timid when facing top teams. Feel bad for the fans who bought tickets.

We could beat Australia. If we can't even beat one of the top3 we don't even deserve to go to the semis and then this discussion is useless.
We could upset Eng and then upset aus if we're very lucky.

Why we have lower NRR than Sri Lanka?

Sri Lanka just got absolutely hammered by NZ and lost by 10 wickets, whereas we actually managed to get 3 wickets so I was expecting Sri Lanka to have lower NRR than us. Anyone know the mathematics behind how NRR is calculated?

Sri Lankans batted longer, scored more runs and had kiwis batting longer in the chase. While on the wickets column Pakistan did better against WI. That's 3-1 to Sri Lanka.

    Sri Lanka scored 136 in 29.2 overs ( Run rate - 4.64 )

    New Zealand scored 137 in 16.1 overs Run Rate - 8.47 )

NRR = Sri Lankan Run rate - New Zealand Run rate

Since SL were all out , their Run Rate calculation will be for full 50 overs which means,

    NRR = (136/50) - 8.47
    = 2.72 -8.47
    = -5.75

thanks bro, makes NRR calculation clear to me. So turns out, number of wickets taken has absolute no say in NRR, I mean even if we had taken 9 wickets against the windies (while in the same amount of overs), we would have the same NRR. Thats kinda unfair tbh.

That's correct, Number of wickets taken or lost has no bearing on the NRR. Teams that get All Out without exhausting their full 50 overs suffer the most especially those who get All Out in 20-30 overs.

Seems so but now Pakistan cannot rely on just NRR to qualify to the Semis but will have to win an extra game. Like 6-7 wins rather than 5 wins with a better S/R.

Minimum number of matches Pakistan must win for a Semi Final Berth without worrying about RunRate?

Can any PP Mathematicians shed some light on this? How many minimum matches will a team has to win to secure a Top 4 Berth in a Table of Ten teams?

A team can even qualify by winning 3 matches if everything goes in favour of it, mathematically. It is too hard for Pakistan now after the drubbing against Windies.

Still 4 is possible, but it demands miraculous results for other teams.

In argument, a team winning 7 matches can also be eliminated in extreme cases.

Ideally in reality If we win 6 or possibly 7, we will go through.

That is exactly how we won the WC in 1992 by some losing to someone and rain doing the rest.

Please explain to me how a team who wins 7 matches can still be eliminated?

    There are 45 matches.

5 teams can win 7 games each. Making it 35.

5 teams can win 2 games each. Making it 10.

Out of the 5 teams winning 7 games, one will miss out on NRR.

    Very much possible.
Make two sets of 5 teams. Top 5 win all matches against bottom 5. That's 5 Wins each for top 5 teams.
Now these top 5 teams have 10 matches between them. If all teams win 2 apiece, we will have 5 teams with 7 wins.

Now 6 teams left to fight for 4 semi final spots.

Pakistan and SL, the way played their first game, look like coming home soon.
Afghanistan, not going to make it and now after two losses in two, South Africa won;t advance to SFs.

Now we are left with England, India, NZL, WI, Australia and Bangladesh to fight for SF spot.

but how? to beat teams, you need plan & method. who do you see taking wickets out of 10 against indian match? who do you see score against chahal & yadav with bumrah upfront? now even bangladesh can beat opponents on their day. How will we win against them?

Let deluded people be deluded. It's funny to see these people think Pakistan will win despite the fact we have no world class bowlers, incompetent coaches, and 0 desire to improve.

If we win games by decent amounts our NRR will come back. Ideally we need to thrash Sri Lanka on Friday.

Pakistan has to win minimum 5 of the remaining 8 games. 6 to be assured but 5 can also do based on NRR. Itís only been one game you can improve it.

Funny things can happen. Pakistan winning next 2-3 games will change the perceptions entirely. Then a lot of you will be gunna for topping the group.

We need to thrash Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, and ideally Bangladesh too. That's our only chance to stay competitive with our net RR.

The worst thing about the Windies loss was that we didn't even try to play out the overs. The way Amir, normally a pretty decent defensive batsman, was exposing his wickets every ball said a lot about the mindset. Repairing the NRR from here will take a lot of work. Not that it will matter much if we can't win matches.
It is very difficult to say what the cutoff will be at this point but for the 3rd and 4th team it will most likely be 6 or 7 wins. 5 can be possible but is unlikely as it will require quite a few upsets with a number of bottom half teams fighting it out.

5 wins with a healthy NRR or 6 wins

Those are the two ways we can still qualify

Pakistan will need 6 wins now unless they smash a few teams by big margins and increase their NRR so that even 5 wins would be sufficient.

    Guys, please do the math!!!

If Pakistan wins 5 out of the next 8 games, at least 3 of them with 10 overs to spare( or by a win margin of 80 runs or so), and a couple with 5 overs (and a win margin of 30 runs or so), and the remaining matches it loses by a small margin, Pakistan's NRR will be close to 0.

You guys are not out. Its not going to be easy. But the fat lady has not sung yet.

I dont care how Pakistan performs in the world cup. A team who has lost 13 out of last 15 games is not going to win WC of this format. As long as India dont win the cup I will consider it a successful campaign for Pakistan team.

These games are going to be nothing but a 6 pointer relegation battle the likes of eng ind aus nz would have qualified by then. The rest will be playing just to save face.

Could have had 6 for amir if root catch was taken by babr. could be avoided with tight slips and practice. Shadab also missed another chance for wicket when saifi missed stumping.

wait, how did South Africas NRR increase even after losing the second game?? isn't NRR meant to worsen when you lose because more -NRR gets added on?

It's NET run ret. It's sum all runs scored and conceded(-) in all matches. So yes, it did increase.

oh so basically its average run rate in all matches played minus average run rate of opposition in all matches played?

We still have the worst NRR, we need to absolutely smash sri lanka and afghanistan and give good fights to aus/ind/nz to have hope of qualifying to semis.

Just goes to show the stupidity of not just trying to get as many runs as possible by playing out the overs once wickets were down in the Windies game. Absolutely brainless!

It really was. Middle order is mainly to blame, but even for tailenders the shots that Wahab and Hasan played were unforgivable. Missing out on extra runs could have made such a huge difference as WI might not have tried to blast us away.

We have brought it down from -5 to -2 now . A few more wins and it should improve further. Everything that could have gone wrong for us in the West Indies game did . Iím positive for the future .
This World Cup is Showing that middling scores of 270-280 might be enough on some occasions which puts Pakistan right in the mix . Amir and wahab have their tail up. . Once Hassan comes to the party and with Shadab showing good signs we have a good chance to topple other teams as well inshallah

We have to take it in the positive, as close windies since windies may tie with us for final berth in semis

Why specifically that game? You think Pakistan is going to lose against Australia and India for sure?
