New Zealand [248/8] beat Bangladesh [244] by 2 wickets in the 9th match of 2019 World Cup

Having won their respective first matches rather impressively, both Bangladesh and New Zealand will want to stamp their authority when they lock horns at The Oval on Wednesday, 5 June.

    Overview

    Bangladesh v New Zealand
    The Oval, London
2019 ICC Cricket World Cup, Match 9
    Wednesday, 5 June; 1.30pm local, 12.30pm GMT

New Zealand were ruthless in their first game, the bowlers bundling Sri Lanka out for 136 in Cardiff and their openers then gallopping past the total effortlessly. They'll be riding high on confidence after that display.

Bangladesh, on the other hand, didn't have it quite as easy against South Africa but came off with a stunning 21-run win to show that they are not at the tournament to just make up the numbers.

The biggest positive for Bangladesh was their batting as they raked up 330/6 against one of the most formidable bowling attacks in the tournament. Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim made seventies, but there were other key contributions from the likes of Soumya Sarkar and Mahmudullah, who will be keen to perform against New Zealand too.

Still, they will be wary of New Zealand's swing-focused bowling attack. Lateral movement has caused Bangladesh batsmen a lot of trouble in recent years, and if Trent Boult and Co. are able to generate some at The Oval, it will be a real test for Bangladesh.

Unless rain should play spoilsport, one of these two teams will become the first to bring up more than one win in the tournament. In a competition so intense, that early advantage will be much desired.

    Key Players

Mushfiqur Rahim (Bangladesh): One of the pillars of Bangladesh cricket, Mushfiqur Rahim has often played the role of an anchor with the bat. His strike-rate has been a subject of some question, but against South Africa he showed that he can adapt and play with more fluency. It will be crucial for Bangladesh that he maintains his form.

Martin Guptill (New Zealand): The stylish opener put on a real display in his side's tournament opener against Sri Lanka, scoring an unbeaten 73 off just 51 balls. Guptill was one of New Zealand's key performers in the 2015 World Cup when they made it to the final. The team will be pleased about the start he's had in the tournament. He has an opportunity to build on that when he faces Bangladesh against whom he averages just under 61.

    Conditions

There is forecast for good cloud coverage, which should give seam bowlers something to look forward to on a surface that otherwise favours batsmen. Thankfully, chances of rain are slim for most part of the day.

    Squads

Bangladesh: Mashrafe Mortaza (capt), Abu Jayed, Liton Das (wk), Mahmudullah, Mehidy Hasan, Mohammad Mithun (wk), Mohammad Saifuddin, Mosaddek Hossain, Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), Mustafizur Rahman, Rubel Hossain, Sabbir Rahman, Shakib Al Hasan, Soumya Sarkar, Tamim Iqbal

New Zealand: Kane Williamson (capt), Tom Blundell (wk), Trent Boult, Colin de Grandhomme, Lockie Ferguson, Martin Guptill, Matt Henry, Tom Latham, Colin Munro, Jimmy Neesham, Henry Nicholls, Mitchell Santner, Ish Sodhi, Tim Southee, Ross Taylor

    • New Zealand have won eight of their last 10 ODIs against Bangladesh, however their
most recent defeat against them came in the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy in Cardiff.
    • Overall Bangladesh have picked up 10 ODI wins against New Zealand (L24), only
against Zimbabwe (W44) and the Windies (W14) have they picked up more victories
    in this format.
    • Bangladesh and New Zealand have met four times before in ICC Cricket World Cup
history (1999, 2003, 2007, 2015), with the Black Caps winning all four previous clashes,
    batting second on each occasion.
    • New Zealand have won their last four ODI matches heading into this match whilst
Bangladesh have won their last five, although their last defeat did come against the
    Black Caps.
    • Bangladesh won their opening match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019, beating
South Africa and in doing so recording their highest ever ODI score, 330/6.
    • New Zealand have won their last two ODI games at The Oval, beating England on
both occasions, they also beat the USA at the venue in the 2004 ICC Champions
Trophy (lost four other ODIs at The Oval).
    • Bangladesh have completed three previous ODIs at The Oval, losing their first two
there against England, before registering their first win at the famous London venue in
their inaugural match of this ICC Cricket World Cup against South Africa.
    • Martin Guptill averages 63 from 18 ICC Cricket World Cup innings, of the 85 players to
score 500+ runs in the tournament’s history only four have a better average (A
Symonds, AB de Villiers, M Clarke, V Richards).
    • Lockie Ferguson needs one more wicket to reach 50 in ODIs for New Zealand, he has
taken nine wickets in five previous matches against Bangladesh at an average of
    27.1.
    • Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan will make his 200th ODI appearance in this match,
against South Africa he notched up his 250th ODI wicket, he’s just the fifth player to
score 5,000 ODI runs and take 250 wickets (also Razzaq, Afridi, Kallis, Jayasuriya), and
the fastest of those five to reach the milestone (199 matches).

    Bismillah!

I heard it will be a new pitch. So they’ll have to go with another proper seamer, in Rubel. That means one has to be dropped for Rubel. I’d drop Mohammad Mithun. As I think he is not needed for today, and both Mahmudullah and Mossadekk can do his job, plus theres Miraz and Mortaza for late order.

    My XI:
    Tamim
    Soumya
    Shakib
    Mushfiqur
    Mahmudullah
    Mossadekk
    Mehidy

    Mashrafe (c)

Most existing match of the tournament. Two evenly matched teams r playing against each other. It should be a good game.

But I think Bangladesh is the favourite in today's match, especially if we consider their superior record over NZ.

Anyway, missed the previous match of BD. Hopefully will mange to enjoy the full match today. All the best to the tigers.

Mashrafe is jinxed badly at the toss, never wins important tosses.

New pitch, fresh wicket, bowling first would be better. I reckon BD will struggle early on, NZ bowlers swing it well! Need to show a lot of character and application.

Is it a bowling or batting pitch?
If its batting pitch its 50-50 because NZ choke under pressure in many matches.
If bowling pitch its 60-40 for NZ.

Because I am not delusional. Iíll be first one to eat the humble pie, lots of it, but boys are not expected to win this one, that too after being put into bat.

But, since they have won an unexpected game, best thing is to make sure that one loss doesnít crash and he NRR situatio. The way tournament has gone in a multi team tie, SAF & PAK already have dented their NRR situation in first game and this game is actually a double header, stake is not only 2 points.

Bangladesh can win this game. If they get early wickets, they have the spinners to put NZ under pressure.

You are worried about net run rate , you still have Australia,India, and England to play. They are more likely to damage net run rate than NZ. Bangladesh will need to beat one of Pakistan,NZ,or West Indies to get through. They will beat Afghanistan and should beat Sri Lanka.

Winning should be the 1st target. When game is gone then you concentrate on net run rate.

So Far NZ bowling doesn't looks any threatening.
But I will be surprised to see if Bangladesh can score 320 runs in English pitch. People rate Boult as one of the great modern day bowlers but he looks ordinary so far I have see today. NZ will be struggling against BD spinner for sure.

Exactly!!!!! All of a sudden it looks this team has batsmen to score 350 in English pitches without have much experience. There is a good possibility this team can even go to final if they play like this.

There is something ultra naive about Soumya Sarkar. He is talented and a good hitter of the ball but he has to get more intelligent in his shot selections, reading match situations. He is not a 19 year old making his debut series. Needa to grow up, mentally!

Tamim two games in a row, has not unleashed his proper game. Neither went for some big shots. In ICC WC he is a pathetic player. Time to give Liton Das a go. Tamim is fast becoming a liability in the side!

In the SA game, boundaries were coming fast and thick, singles were good. Today they seem stuck in the middle. NZ are better bowling attack than SA, IMO! But BD AFTER first ten last 4/5 havenít batted well.

Pitch looks good for batting now. BD look off the pace, somewhat. Canít afford to go into a big shell. Got to score, rotate, boundaries needed. Itís been too quite lately!

We're seeing a return to old fashioned ODI cricket in this tournament. Batsmen haven't had it all their way.

When the openers get a start, one fires well, one has to go on and get least 70-90 or ton+. You cant simply keep putting pressure on Shakib and Mushy and middle order to score the runs all the time. One of the opener has to take responsibility and get a big one after being set

BD players seem like fasting today they did when they were actually fasting. Or maybe the eid dawats hangover and what not. Theres no singles coming well, both seem tired, lacking energy. Seemed so lethargic since the 8th -16th! Bad period.

Drinks now. After drinks these two need to rotate the strike better, both are playing in one gear. Yes they need to bat deep but not go top slow. Set a platform for Mahmudullah and Mossadekk to finish off.

Its looks like bowling pitch. 250 is more than enough to defend.

Might not be 250, but I am sure it's not a 330 wicket. What they need is to reach 40 over mark like 180-3, then whatever comes in last 10. 265+ definitely is going to stress Kiwis.

Don't think NZ can chase 250 in this pitch. Munro is a walking wicket and there is World Cup pressure.

Wicket is fine, maybe a little slower than normal Oval pitch but just some poor shot selection and terrible running between wickets for the run out is costing BD.

Guha talking absolute crap saying BD need to start pushing the R/R. Still 11 overs to negotiate, they need to have enough wickets in hand to attack the last 5 overs. No point in risking any more wickets at this point.

Losing wickets at wrong time - all 4. But, still RR is good, what they need is to put a partnership, even allowing RR to drop a bit and reach 40th over with 4 down. Otherwise we might not play out 50 overs.

Too many set batsmen getting out, softly. Which leaves the new man coming in trying to get set, doing it from square one all over again.which in result will slow down the RR.

BD batsmen have to take better responsibilities to ensure they score big innings especially when theyíre well set!
