Australia [288] defeat West Indies [273/9] by 15 runs in ICC World Cup 2019

After recording wins in their respective opening games, Australia and West Indies will look to fight fire with fire when they take on each other in the 10th match of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2019, on Thursday, 6 June.

    Overview

    Australia v West Indies
    Trent Bridge, Nottingham
2019 ICC Cricket World Cup, Match 10
Thursday, 6 June; 10:30am local time, 9:30am GMT

Australia excelled on all three fronts against Afghanistan, winning by a convincing margin of seven wickets. While David Warner's success was hardly a surprise, skipper Aaron Finch, too, impressed with his stroke-filled 66. The bowling unit, one of the strongest in the tournament, seemed to have all bases covered on Saturday. They will, however, face a greater challenge, against a power-hitting unit, at a high-scoring venue on Thursday.

With their experienced players in prime form, West Indies seem as motivated as they could be. They came up with an aggressive approach in their opening game against Pakistan, much like they did against New Zealand in the warm-ups, and bundled out the opposition for just 105. The performance of their fast bowlers in those cloudy conditions was a throwback to West Indies' early domination in World Cup cricket.

With Andre Russell having already declared his intent to attack Australia's openers with short-pitched stuff, and Nathan Coulter-Nile promising to return the favour, fans will be in for an exciting contest when the finalists of the inaugural World Cup edition take the field on Thursday.

    Key Players

Pat Cummins (Australia): Cummins has been leading Australia's pace attack for the past few years with some consistent performances. The Sydney-born pacer, who took three wickets in his side's first game, against Afghanistan, will look to attack the Windies openers with short balls, which could potentially make for an exciting session of cricket at Trent Bridge.

646 people are talking about this
Shai Hope (West Indies): Hope's failure in the small run-chase against Pakistan might be considered as nothing more than a minor blip as he comes into the tournament on the back of some significant performances. The right-hander, who scored a fluent century against the strong New Zealand bowling attack in the warm-ups, will look to do something similar against an equally potent Australian attack.

    Conditions

It's expected to be a cloudy start, with chances of rains throughout the day. While fast bowlers are expected to get assistance due to the overcast conditions early on, as it happened for West Indies against Pakistan, batsmen from both teams will be on an all-attack mode, especially given the short boundaries at Trent Bridge.

    Squads

Australia: Aaron Finch (c), David Warner, Usman Khawaja, Steve Smith, Shaun Marsh, Alex Carey (wk), Marcus Stoinis, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Starc, Kane Richardson, Pat Cummins, Jason Behrendorff, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Adam Zampa, Nathan Lyon

West Indies: Jason Holder (c), Fabian Allen, Darren Bravo, Shannon Gabriel, Shimron Hetmyer, Evin Lewis, Nicholas Pooran, Andre Russell, Carlos Brathwaite, Sheldon Cottrell, Chris Gayle, Shai Hope, Ashley Nurse, Kemar Roach, Oshane Thomas

    Australia v West Indies

    • Australia have managed to win more ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup tournaments
than any to other side; lifting the trophy five times across their 11 appearances.
    • Only Australia (five tournaments) have registered more ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup
victories than the West Indies (two); the men from the Caribbean winning the first two
    editions of the competition (1975 & 1979).
    • Australia and West Indies have been involved in 136 completed ODI fixtures against
each other; Australia currently hold the upper hand with 73 wins to 60 recorded by
    West Indies (three tied).
    • Nine of the last 10 ODI games played out between Australia and West Indies have
been won by the Australians (L1); they haven’t faced off in this format since 2016
    however.
    • After winning the initial four ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup matches versus Australia,
the West Indies have since tasted defeat in four of the five encounters in the
    tournament since (W1).
    • West Indies have registered victories in four of their five ODI matches played against
Australia in England; losing the most recent meeting there at ICC Men’s Cricket World
    Cup 1999 however.
    • Australia have won their last nine ODIs on the bounce heading into this fixture; their
longest such streak since doing the same between March and September in 2015.
    • This game will be the 800th recorded for West Indies in ODI cricket, only four other
sides have ever managed to reach that milestone (India, Australia, Pakistan & Sri
Lanka); West Indies currently possess a record of 393 victories and 368 defeats in the
format (10 tied and 28 no results).
    • Mitchell Starc is four wickets away from becoming only the 10th bowler to pick up
150 for Australia; he’s claimed 23 wickets in ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup matches at
    an average of just 11.
    • Chris Gayle (West Indies) has managed to post six ODI half-centuries in succession
ahead of this contest; only one man has ever put together a longer run (Pakistan’s
    Javed Miandad, nine).

Khawaja was doing great as a opener. Obviously can't drop Warner , I would have liked to see Australia but Finch at 3 or 4 as he has issues against the new ball.

Bumrah will be all over Finch on Sunday.

The bouncers may not be getting the wickets, but make no mistake they are reason for this collapse. Very intelligent bowling.

Hope and Dhoni are the best keepers in the tournament. Kockís catch was fantastic yesterday.

Worst keepers Mushfiq followed by Shehzad

Pakistani fabs should be feeling a bit better with their teams performance in perspective now...

For your game it was a shock tactic....

We had a week to prepare for it and we are supposed to be able to handle the short ball!

WI destroying us with the same plan.

Maxwell is a clown who should not be batting at 5. Is Travis injured? If not, Langer is being an idiot not playing him.
