Pakistan manager says players had no plans for 'special' celebration against India [Update Post #29]

Smarting from Kohli’s team’s act of wearing army caps post Pulwama terror attack, Pakistan players’ request to retaliate on the field shot down by their PM Imran Khan

Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has extended another olive branch to India by asking his national players at the World Cup in England to ‘stick to cricket’ during the India vs Pakistan match in Manchester on June 16.

A senior official in the Pakistan establishment told Mumbai Mirror that a proposal was sent to Imran’s government that Sarfaraz Ahmed and his team wanted to celebrate India’s wickets ‘differently’ in retaliation to Kohli and Co. wearing army caps during a one-day international against Australia at Ranchi in March.

Skipper Virat Kohli and the rest of Indian squad turned out for the game wearing the camouflage military caps, which had the BCCI’s logo on it, as tribute to the CRPF personnel who lost their lives in the Pulwama terrorist attack on February 14. Pakistan had raised strong objection, saying the Indian team was deviating from sport.

The International Cricket Council (ICC), the game’s governing body, has codes for all types of conducts.
The ICC officials said they haven’t received any specific request from the Pakistan Cricket Board, and in case of India wearing the army caps in Ranchi, the BCCI had sought the permission for the same.

The ICC has also asked MS Dhoni to remove the army insignia on his glove, saying it was against its regulations. Dhoni, an honorary lieutenant colonel in the Parachute Regiment of Territorial Army, had the regimental dagger insignia of the para forces embossed on his green wicket-keeping gloves during India’s first match in the tournament, against South Africa.

While it remains to be seen whether Dhoni does remove the insignia during India’s next match, against Australia on Sunday, the muchawaited India vs Pakistan clash was in serious doubt at the height of tension between the two countries post Pulwama. There were calls to boycott the Pakistan match in the World Cup, but now that two teams will indeed clash for the first time since Pulwama, the Pakistan players were keen on some display of aggression, the Pakistani official said.

“Prime Minister Khan has clearly conveyed to the players that they must enjoy the game and not indulge in overt show of political diplomacy or aggression. He is clear that sport should not blend with politics, hence there will not be anything like what the Indian cricket team did recently,” the official said.

This comes on the back of Imran’s government refusing Mumbai attack mastermind Hafiz Saeed’s request of leading the Eid-ul-Fitr prayers at Qaddafi Stadium in Lahore. This was the first time in decades that Saeed couldn’t lead Eid prayers at the Qaddafi Stadium, to which he had unhindered access during Eid-ul Fitr and Eid-ul Azha.

The Pakistan Cricket Board chairman, Ehsan Mani, who was also the International Cricket Council chief a few years ago, all but confirmed his government asking its players to calm down ahead of the India clash.

“We will not resort to what the other party has done,” Mani said. “There could be sporadic celebrations in case of a hundred, like Misbah-ul Haq’s push-ups during the Lord’s Test in 2016 which was a tribute to the army, but nothing different at the fall of a wicket,” he added.

But that’s a big IF. For, Virat and team may well end up doing the celebrating.

Some are born to lead .

He’s spot on, the essence of sport is fair play & respecting your opposition, putting everything else away . If you don’t feel this way don’t play against the team .

    Strange thing to say.

IK is in politics because he wanted to give back to his country, not because he was a cricketer

If the idea was from our team, they need to stop this circus and concentrate on cricket, which is their primary job military can handle themselves on the border. I am happy that the Government shut down this stupidity before we had to see this.

Players from Pakistan and India need professionalism on the field, and they should leave these childish emotions off the ground for their own time.

There’s no official named here so there’s no confirmation if the team would even think of something this stupid. Stop believing everything you read on the web.

Yeah I guess doing salutes and pushups by Misbah were ok but when Sarfaraz requests to do "stupid celebration" as you put it then he is immature. Mashallah so impartial and rational.

chairman has said statutory celebrations are allowed, which included salutes and push ups.

But apprently our captain was thinking about doing something over the top which is why his bosses had to intervene and stop him from doing.

Must be shameful for a Pakistani captain to be told by the PM to behave.

Surprised as to why any body from Pakistan has to be sooo offended if players from India wear some symbols showing solidarity & respect for the 'armed forces' . It is a truth that in Pulwama about 45 Indian army personnel got martyred in the most brutal way that can ever happen. If Pakistan firmly believes that they do not have any role in this, why they get charged up hearing these things ... that is the thing that really surprises a neutral person.... On one side a few men from armed forces of one nation gets martyred. The cricket players of that nation shows their feelings for the martyrs by wearing some symbols. On hearing about this, players from another nation get agitated on this that do not have any thing to do with them.Really strange ........

It's not only Pakistanis who have a problem with mixing military with sport. Take off your orange tinted glasses.

The feeling is expressed by most as well as the governing body which Pakistan didn't influence.

Even in other sport, this military symbolism is not allowed and if it is, it is slowly losing weight. Sport shouldn't be mixed with armies, no matter how you love them.

All sport however allow solidarity with mass civilians casualties through black arm bands and such. Sport is just too sacred.

PCB and PM have not made any official statements. The report says the unnamed official said that’s what Imran Khan and Ehsan Amani said. Hence why Saj’s tweet days...reports state.

I highly doubt the veracity of this story...Looks like a figment of typical bollywood inspired imagination of people in Indian media...

Nobody has reported this in Pakistan nor anyone has corroborated this being that the Pakistan team requested that they retaliate against Indian team...

This only happened in the minds of Pakistan obsessed Indians...

As an indian i feel sports should be that...sports only - lets do away with the symbolism/imagery/posturing etc....as if we start doing this, there are enough causes in each country, environment and occasions to keep us busy to kingdom come....hope this stops where it is and we concentrate on the leather and wood....cheers...

A very sensible advice. Focus on cricket and not on celebrations. Even if one side has behaved irrationally, you should try to keep a natural behavior.
It's a sorry state that PM has to tell the team to behave rather than the management.

Pakistan manager says players had no plans for 'special' celebration against India

Pakistan team manager Talat Ali rubbished media reports his players have had to be told to celebrate with restraint during the much-anticipated World Cup clash against India on Sunday, saying they had no extravagant plans to begin with.

Ali rebutted reports that Prime Minister Imran Khan instructed the players to avoid celebrations in the match against India at Manchester.

“No such instructions have been issued to the players. The players met with Imran Khan at Bani Gala before flying to London. After that the Prime Minister has had no contact with the players,” Ali, a former Test player, said.

“We follow the guideline given to us by the Pakistan Cricket Board and for us the match against India is just like against any other team. Obviously it is a high-profile match but we just focus on cricket and don’t have any politics in our mind,” he asserted.

Earlier, the team had to issue a statement negating media reports that Pakistani players were planning to wear camouflage military caps during the match against India.

”...we have no special plans for the match. As far as the cricket is concerned chief selector Inzamam-ul-Haq, captain Sarfaraz Ahmed and head coach Mickey Arthur are discussing strategy and team for the important match. But our players will only focus on playing good cricket,” he said.

The match will be the first between the two arch-rivals since the terror attack in Pulwama in which 40 CRPF personnel were killed. There were calls by some former Indian players and politicians to boycott the match.

Ali said at the moment, the Pakistan team was more focussed on its crucial match against Australia on Wednesday.
