England [386/6] defeat Bangladesh [280] by 106 runs in the 12th match of the 2019 World Cup

After a narrow loss to Pakistan in their previous game, hosts England will look to improve their bowling performance against the mettlesome Bangladesh unit, in their third game of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2019.

    Overview

    England v Bangladesh

    Cardiff Wales Stadium, Cardiff
2019 ICC Cricket World Cup, Match 12
    Saturday, 8 June; 10:30am local, 09.30am GMT

The hosts, favourites, got a wake-up call early in the tournament, as they went down to Pakistan by 14 runs at Trent Bridge. While the batting still looks unblemished with scores in excess of 300 achieved on both occasions, it was the bowling effort that let the three-time runners-up down in their previous game. There's little room for complacency for Eoin Morgan's side against Bangladesh - the team that brought an end to their 2015 campaign.

Bangladesh have put up a fine bowling performance in both their outings at The Oval. While they had South African batting under control for most part of their 21-run victory, a late burst against New Zealand almost saw them home. The batsmen, however, couldn't convert their starts and failed to take their team to a significant total. Mashrafe Mortaza will expect his openers and the middle-order batsmen to shoulder some responsibility alongside Shakib Al Hasan, who has been in prime form.

As both teams move to Cardiff - a venue which has offered a lot of assistance to the new ball bowlers early on, things will only get difficult for openers from either side. England, with their recent form, pace attack and conditions in their favour, seem to have an edge over their opponents on Saturday.

    Key Players

Joe Root (England): Root almost took his side to victory with a fluent century in a tough run-chase against Pakistan. The Yorkshireman, who is the leading run-scorer of the tournament so far, could be the glue that holds the English batting together, with his equal potency against spin and pace.

Tamim Iqbal (Bangladesh): Tamim, who has been the mainstay of the Bangladesh batting order for the last few years, failed to convert his starts on both previous occasions. The left-hander, who scored a well compiled 128 in his last outing against the hosts, will look to repeat a similar performance to give his side enough chance on Saturday.

    Conditions

With overcast and windy start to the day, both teams will look to bowl first to try and exploit the conditions. While sunny spells are expected to develop through the day, chances of rain would still persist at Cardiff.

    Squads

England: Eoin Morgan (c), Moeen Ali, Jofra Archer, Jonny Bairstow, Jos Buttler (wk), Tom Curran, Liam Dawson, Liam Plunkett, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Jason Roy, Ben Stokes, James Vince, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood.

Bangladesh: Mashrafe Mortaza (capt), Abu Jayed, Liton Das (wk), Mahmudullah, Mehidy Hasan, Mohammad Mithun (wk), Mohammad Saifuddin, Mosaddek Hossain, Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), Mustafizur Rahman, Rubel Hossain, Sabbir Rahman, Shakib Al Hasan, Soumya Sarkar, Tamim Iqbal

    Some stats:

    • England have won three of their last four ODIs against Bangladesh (L1), including their most
recent fixture in June 2017; this will be their first ever meeting at the Cardiff Wales Stadium.

    • England (W1) and Bangladesh (W2) have faced off three times before at the ICC Men’s
Cricket World Cup; Bangladesh winning their most recent such game in the 2015 edition by a
    margin of 15 runs.

    • England come into this match on the back of losing seven of their last 10 ICC Men’s Cricket
World Cup matches against teams from Asia (W2 T1), including their most recent such fixture
    against Pakistan.

    • Bangladesh suffered a two-wicket defeat to New Zealand last time out in the ICC Men’s
Cricket World Cup 2019, ending a run of five ODI victories on the bounce; their best ODI
winning streak since a six-match span across 2015-2016.

    • England were unable to produce a successful ODI run chase on home soil for the first time
since 5th September 2015 (v Australia) last time out against Pakistan in the ICC Men’s Cricket
    World Cup 2019.

    • England have alternated between victory and defeat across their last seven ODI matches
played at Cardiff Wales Stadium; they recorded a 38-run win over Australia there last time
    (June 2018).

    • Shakib AI Hasan (Bangladesh) has scored 408 runs across his last seven ODI knocks in Europe,
averaging 81.6; he’s reached 50 in five of those seven innings.

    • Jos Buttler (England) claimed a century in his most recent ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019
fixture against Pakistan in 75 balls; he’s managed to record hundreds in three of his last seven
    knocks in ODI cricket.

    • Rubel Hossain (Bangladesh) took figures of 4/53 in his country’s last ICC Men’s Cricket World
Cup encounter with England in 2015; the third-best bowling figures by a Bangladesh bowler
    in the competition’s history.

    • Moeen Ali’s (England) economy rate versus Bangladesh (4.9, 46 overs bowled) is his second-
best against any opponent in ODIs, only bettered by his record against New Zealand (4.4, 43 overs bowled).

Tamim Iqbal after 23 matches averaging 22.73 with a strike rate of 72, he has a poor world cup record and so far his performance has been pathetic. Probably the worst opener after getting so many chances, not a big game player. If he fails today, he should be replaced.

    England vs Bangladesh | 12th Match, World Cup | Cardiff | June 8, 2019 | Match Thread

Looking forward to some Bangladesh madness today. I really hope that they give England a tough time. So love watching them play. They play as a unit and with great unity and determination. Amongst my favourite teams right now.

Bangladesh bowling is really not that threatening. I would worry that there is a big chance eng might do the unholy 400 against this bowling. However, BD batting is not bad. If they are somewhat able to score 300+ batting first or choke eng to 260ish then has a great chance at winning

Bangladesh needs to win the toss and bowl first IMO. InshAllah! Win the toss for once Mashrafe!

    Weather is fine.

I know they’ll most likely stick to the same team but I really think BD does not need Mithun, needs another seamer - Rubel. There’s plenty of batting, you got guys like Saifuddin and Miraz to come down there. Mahmudullah and Mossaddekk can do Mithun role and play big shots better too. So there is my line up.

    Tamim
    Soumya
    Shakib
    Mushfiqur
    Mahmudullah
    Mossadekk
    Miraz
    Saifuddin
    Mashrafe (c)

Bowling first might be better. There’ll be early movements, am sure the wicket has been under cover so long, these parts in particular western UK, South west - South Wales been raining last few days, so Am sure they’ll be early swing in the wicket

Bangladesh has a 2 out of 2 wins at Cardiff. Beaten one of the best Aus side ever. Should not worry about England who BD have beaten last two WC’s. They have a chance as long as everyone plays to their potential. It’s not like 2007 90-10 however England are still favourites, I’d say it’s 60-40!

But Mashrafee and Mustafiz aren’t effective in seaming conditions. Mashrafee’s bowling and Tamim’s batting has been a huge liability. Highest score can be scored today against our attack. England will take revenge for precious two world cups

    England vs Bangladesh | 12th Match, World Cup | Cardiff | June 8, 2019 | Match Thread

Bit of a disagreement at home with my father over Mortaza´s decision to bowl first. He reckons that it´s suicidal given England´s ability to easily post a 350 plus score. However, in my opinion, the best way to overcome this England team is to let them bat first as otherwise they can chase ANY given score with immense ease. Restricting them here to under 320 should be the aim here.

Let´s see who of us two was right at the end of the day.

Bangladesh Problem is Their Skipper himself. He is not offering anything to the team at the
moment and robbing them from one attacking bowling options

No doubt he has been a wonderful ambassador for Bangla cricket but ODI is a ruthless game
and he is putting undue pressure on other bowlers because of his dismal bowling

Saifuddin is Underrated in This Forum, He is Picked For His Death Bowling Capabilities. Not Much Pace But Has Different Variations Up His Sleeves, Infact Bowling Far Better Than Fizz in Death Overs Since His Insertion into The Team.

One thing Kohli was spot on that, all these talks of 500 by Eng is a myth. Even 250 in semis can be as tough as anything. So far it’s proven right English couldn’t chase down 350, they should have been bowled out 250 had root catch was taken. Lets see how poms bat today.

They are Favs and i want them not to even reach semis. Come on BD.

Ball zips off the surface. If you ask me BD is wasting the new ball. No bouncers. Windies would have had 2 wickets on this pitch already.

They have over done with Shakib in the first 10. You need seamers to exploit the condition with new ball.
