Australia batsman David Warner was left "shaken up" after hitting a net bowler on the head with a powerful drive, captain Aaron Finch said.

His visibly concerned team-mates had to halt their practice session at The Oval while medics treated the bowler - understood to be a local cricketer named Jaykishan Plaha.

He was taken to hospital as a precaution after receiving treatment.

Defending champions Australia face India in a World Cup match on Sunday.

"The net bowler has been taken to hospital as a precautionary measure because it was a head injury," International Cricket Council venue manager Michael Gibson told reporters.

"He was conscious and smiling as he was taken off."

Finch added: "Dave is obviously pretty shaken up. The young guy is in pretty good spirits at the moment. He has obviously been taken to the hospital to be assessed that everything is OK.

"It was a pretty decent hit, so hopefully everything goes well for the youngster and he is up and running shortly."

In 2014, Warner, 32, who returned to playing international cricket in April after a year-long ban for ball-tampering, was playing for South Australia when his team-mate and close friend Philip Hughes was fatally struck on the head by a ball while batting.

Then, Mitchell Starc - the Player of the Tournament in the 2015 edition - snuffed out a tough West Indies fightback during the chase to finish with five wickets and deliver a 15-run win. Now, Australia once again meet the opposition against whom they began their remarkable ODI turnaround earlier this year - India.

Their opponents are riding their own wave of confidence, having announced themselves with a convincing victory against South Africa on Wednesday. The spin duo of Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal, who wiped out half the South African line-up between them, might once again be a decisive factor. While Rohit Sharma seemed back in touch with his gritty century, KL Rahul's resistance during a tough period of play must be heartening for team management.

Whereas Australia have shown already in the tournament that they can win even if their top-order is removed cheaply, the same cannot be said about India. In fact, an open secret is that dislodging their top three has in the last four to five years has very often given you a victory - as much as it pains me to be saying that about a middle-order which contains MS Dhoni! Credit to India though, their top three are almost impossible to dismiss. They take the responsibility and get the big runs. So kudos to them!

It is not jinx or anti jinx. There are certain things only fans from the country can understand. They watch every match. THey know the probability of certain things better than anyone else. Bit like how Pak fans know more about the expectation from Pak players than others. Form, what type of bowlers they are susceptible against, what their weaknesses etc. India will walk on a tight rope against every team not just Australia. It is not the Australian team of the past that recover from any setback. This team may come back with ball. But with bat, they won't come back as we saw in the warm up game against NZ.

Tendulkar shared an interesting anecdote about 2011 world cup match against Australia. Weather was extremely hot. So he totally avoided spicy food for 2 days.
