India [352/5] defeat Australia [316] by 36 runs in ICC Cricket World Cup 2019

Australia batsman David Warner was left "shaken up" after hitting a net bowler on the head with a powerful drive, captain Aaron Finch said.

His visibly concerned team-mates had to halt their practice session at The Oval while medics treated the bowler - understood to be a local cricketer named Jaykishan Plaha.

He was taken to hospital as a precaution after receiving treatment.

Defending champions Australia face India in a World Cup match on Sunday.

"The net bowler has been taken to hospital as a precautionary measure because it was a head injury," International Cricket Council venue manager Michael Gibson told reporters.

"He was conscious and smiling as he was taken off."

Finch added: "Dave is obviously pretty shaken up. The young guy is in pretty good spirits at the moment. He has obviously been taken to the hospital to be assessed that everything is OK.

"It was a pretty decent hit, so hopefully everything goes well for the youngster and he is up and running shortly."

In 2014, Warner, 32, who returned to playing international cricket in April after a year-long ban for ball-tampering, was playing for South Australia when his team-mate and close friend Philip Hughes was fatally struck on the head by a ball while batting.

India vs Australia | 13th Match, World Cup | The Oval, London | June 09, 2019 | Match Thread

Having had a winning start to the tournament, both India and Australia will eye for early supremacy, as they take on each other in the 14th match of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2019 at The Oval on Sunday, 9 June.

    Overview

    India v Australia
    The Oval, London
2019 ICC Cricket World Cup, Match 14
    Sunday, 09 June; 10:30am local, 09.30am GMT

Australia's famed never-say-die spirit once again came to the fore, when they staged a remarkable comeback against West Indies at Trent Bridge on Thursday. Nathan Coulter-Nile, who had an ODI average of 12.83 before Thursday, stunned West Indies with a 60-ball 92 to lift Australia from the depths of 38/4, with Steve Smith and Alex Carey, too, making laudable contributions. Then, Mitchell Starc - the Player of the Tournament in the 2015 edition - snuffed out a tough West Indies fightback during the chase to finish with five wickets and deliver a 15-run win. Now, Australia once again meet the opposition against whom they began their remarkable ODI turnaround earlier this year - India.

Their opponents are riding their own wave of confidence, having announced themselves with a convincing victory against South Africa on Wednesday. The spin duo of Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal, who wiped out half the South African line-up between them, might once again be a decisive factor. While Rohit Sharma seemed back in touch with his gritty century, KL Rahul's resistance during a tough period of play must be heartening for team management.

    Conditions

A few isolated showers might be expected in the afternoon on an otherwise fine day with sunny spells throughout. Batting second has proved to be difficult at The Oval in this tournament so far, which makes the toss a crucial aspect. Dryness, and large square boundaries, might well bring the spinners into play.

    Squads:

India: Virat Kohli (c), Jasprit Bumrah, Yuzvendra Chahal, Shikhar Dhawan, MS Dhoni (wk), Ravindra Jadeja, Kedar Jadhav, Dinesh Karthik, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Hardik Pandya, KL Rahul, Mohammed Shami, Vijay Shankar, Rohit Sharma, Kuldeep Yadav

Australia: Aaron Finch (c), David Warner, Usman Khawaja, Steve Smith, Shaun Marsh, Alex Carey (wk), Marcus Stoinis, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Starc, Kane Richardson, Pat Cummins, Jason Behrendorff, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Adam Zampa, Nathan Lyon

Bumrah vs Starc - Both have pace and both are wicket takers.

Australia have a tremendous batting unit but lets see who is well prepared.

This could probably be the match of the tournament so far IF rain stays away.

It will be a one sided contest.

This match is like a seasoned boxer(Aus) vs an MMA fighter (Ind)

If Starc gets his radar right and can rip out 2 of the big 3, it will be a swift KO victory for Aus. If he doesn't, then Ind will choke out Australia badly. Man for man they have the more varied arsenal and will win more individual player match ups

Hoping for Starc magic and Kohli defiance.

    • Australia have won their last three ODIs on the bounce against India; the last time they
enjoyed a longer such run was a six-game stretch across 2015 and 2016.
    • This will be the 12th meeting between India and Australia at the Cricket World Cup, with the
Australians having won eight of their previous 11 meetings including a 95-run triumph at the
    2015 edition.
    • India have won 12 of their last 13 games played at the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup;
however, their only defeat in that span came at the hands of Australia in the semi-finals of
    the 2015 tournament.
    • India will be searching for their 50th ODI victory over Australia; they would become just the
third team in the history of the format to notch a half-century of wins against them (England
    61, West Indies 60).
    • Australia will be searching for an 11th consecutive ODI victory; 10 straight wins is their
longest run in the format since they strung together 12 victories in a row between 2009 and
    2010.
    • Rohit Sharma needs a knock of just 20 runs to become the second batsman in ODI history to
score 2,000 runs for India against Australia (Sachin Tendulkar – 3,077).
    • Steve Smith (Australia) hit his only ICC Cricket World Cup century (105) when India and
Australia last clashed in this tournament (2015); he comes into this encounter having reached
50 in six of his last seven ICC Cricket World Cup knocks for Australia.
    • MS Dhoni is set to play his 340th ODI for India; equalling Rahul Dravid as the second-most
capped player in the format for India - behind only Sachin Tendulkar (463 games).
    • Nathan Coulter-Nile is just two shy of having taken 50 ODI wickets for Australia; only against
England (14) has he taken more scalps in the format than against India (13).
    • Nathan Coulter-Nile narrowly missed out on surpassing the record for most runs scored by a
number eight in an ODI innings last time out, his 92 off 60 balls against the West Indies falling
just shy of the unbeaten 95 set by England’s Chris Woakes (v Sri Lanka, 2016); it was the
Australian’s highest ever List A score however.

It's gonna be the other way around, India's middle order may not be the best but isn't half bad as they are being portrayed here. I have a feeling KL and Pandya will smack them around and they will have no answer for Bumrah and our spin duo.

I think this will be the first of 2 Ind-Aus encounters in this WC. Australia have the momentum (series win in India, 10-0 unbeaten run) and are a difficult match up for this Indian side. I guess they are overwhelming favorites here, too many things have to go right for us to win. I hope our middle order gets a stern test here, this is one match we can afford to lose.

For any true cricket fan this is a must watch mainly for the amazing individual contests on display.

    Warner/Smith vs Bumrah/Shami

    Rohit/Kohli vs Starc/Cummins

If both Kuldeep and Chahal play it will be interesting to see how they go against Smith and maybe Maxwell. In the 2017 ODI series Smith struggled a lot against our bowling unit, but he has a great record in WCs and in Ind-Aus contests.

India's record in Kennington Oval is bad, won 5 and lost 9. We lost to Sri Lanka and Pakistan in 2017 CT at this ground.

Australia are 8-6 here, which isn't that good if you consider how dominant they have been for most of their ODI history.

India should look to win this match if they have plans to win the World Cup. This is an important match.
That last match against SA must have helped the team gain some confidence because we batted and bowled responsibly. India definitely has the team to beat Australia. We should use this match to improve further. Even if we don’t win, we should look to come out of it with some positive, confidence inspiring performances.

India vs Australia | 13th Match, World Cup | The Oval, London | June 09, 2019 | Match Thread

Whereas Australia have shown already in the tournament that they can win even if their top-order is removed cheaply, the same cannot be said about India. In fact, an open secret is that dislodging their top three has in the last four to five years has very often given you a victory - as much as it pains me to be saying that about a middle-order which contains MS Dhoni! Credit to India though, their top three are almost impossible to dismiss. They take the responsibility and get the big runs. So kudos to them!

Here´s hoping for a cracker of a match!

It is not jinx or anti jinx. There are certain things only fans from the country can understand. They watch every match. THey know the probability of certain things better than anyone else. Bit like how Pak fans know more about the expectation from Pak players than others. Form, what type of bowlers they are susceptible against, what their weaknesses etc. India will walk on a tight rope against every team not just Australia. It is not the Australian team of the past that recover from any setback. This team may come back with ball. But with bat, they won't come back as we saw in the warm up game against NZ.

You know what, I hope you are right. I am getting sick of this Indian brown nosing by so many commentators, officials etc. Them getting an extended break at the start of this tourney really put me off...

Tendulkar shared an interesting anecdote about 2011 world cup match against Australia. Weather was extremely hot. So he totally avoided spicy food for 2 days. He ate curd rice for three days to cool his system down. These guys paid attention to every little detail to maximize their performance. Hope the youngsters show that kind of dedication.

Advantage India, due to toss, batting 1st has made them clear favorites, if they still screw up than it will really expose them.

Starc and Cummins need to have a similar effect.

    Everything depends on the wicket.

Flat wicket India favourites. If it has something in it then 50/50 game if they restrict them under 300.
