16th match of 2019 World Cup between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka abandoned due to persistent rain

Despite the length of the tournament, it affords very little room for slip-ups, and a win for either team at this stage would do a world of good for their respective positions.

    Overview
    Bangladesh v Sri Lanka
    County Ground, Bristol
2019 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, Match 16
    Tuesday, 11 June; 10.30am local, 09.30 GMT

Both Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are on a slippery slope. They have won one out of their first three games, and potentially need to win five of their remaining six. Sri Lanka are in a slightly better position, as opposed to their opponents, with one of their games, against Pakistan, getting washed out without a ball bowled, giving them an extra point.

Sri Lanka were routed against New Zealand, but incredibly bounced back against Afghanistan. That was largely down to their fast bowlers, with Nuwan Pradeep and Lasith Malinga snaring seven wickets between them. Pradeep has been ruled out of this clash, with a dislocated right finger, but it is with the batting that the more pressing issues lie at the moment, with a total of 337 runs having been scored across two games, for the loss of 20 wickets.

Bangladesh have much to be proud of from their campaign so far. They were routed in their previous game, against the tournament hosts England, but competed brilliantly before that, against two tough opponents in New Zealand and South Africa, beating the latter and pushing the former to the brink. They have shown the ability to score runs and pick up wickets. All they need is a little more consistency, and an ability to come out of the crucial junctures of the game on top, and they could go a long way in this World Cup.

    Key players

Shakib Al Hasan (Bangladesh): The all-rounder is comfortably leading the tournament run charts, with two fifties and a century in three games so far. He has also snared three wickets, making him Bangladesh’s undisputed MVP.

Kusal Mendis (Sri Lanka): Mendis’ World Cup party is yet to start, having returned a duck and 2 in his two outings so far. Mendis is Sri Lanka’s most temperamentally sound batsman. He has proven his big-match credentials in the past, and Sri Lanka need runs from him soon, to move up the ladder into a more comfortable position.

    Conditions

An extremely rainy day is expected in Bristol, with chances of showers peaking early morning, in the hours leading up to the match. While they slightly lower during scheduled playing hours, they are still strong enough to make for a stop-start day.

    Squads

Bangadesh: Mashrafe Mortaza (capt), Abu Jayed, Liton Das (wk), Mahmudullah, Mehidy Hasan, Mohammad Mithun (wk), Mohammad Saifuddin, Mosaddek Hossain, Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), Mustafizur Rahman, Rubel Hossain, Sabbir Rahman, Shakib Al Hasan, Soumya Sarkar, Tamim Iqbal

Sri Lanka: Dimuth Karunaratne (c), Avishka Fernando, Suranga Lakmal, Lasith Malinga, Angelo Mathews, Jeevan Mendis, Kusal Mendis (wk), Kusal Perera (wk), Thisara Perera, Nuwan Pradeep, Dhananjaya de Silva, Milinda Siriwardana, Lahiru Thirimanne, Isuru Udana, Jeffrey Vandersay

    • Despite losing 36 of their 43 ODI fixtures played against Sri Lanka (W7), Bangladesh beat Sri
Lanka when they last took them on in this format; winning by a margin of 137 runs back in
    September 2018.

    • This will be the fourth time Bangladesh and Sri Lanka will have faced off at the ICC Men’s
Cricket World Cup; Sri Lanka defeating the Tigers on all three previous occasions.

    • Bangladesh and Sri Lanka have never taken on each other in England before in ODI cricket;
Sri Lanka have lost both completed ODIs they’ve played at the County Ground in Bristol
whilst Bangladesh beat England by five runs in their only previous outing there in this format
    (July 2010).

    • Bangladesh have suffered back-to-back ODI losses, first to New Zealand at The Oval and
then to England in Cardiff; they had enjoyed a five-game winning run in the format
    beforehand however.

    • Sri Lanka won their most recently completed ODI in England and Wales (v Afghanistan); they
    haven’t strung together back-to-back wins there since May-June 2014 (W2, L6, T1 since
    then).

    • Shakib Al Hasan scored 121 versus England in Bangladesh’s most recent game, the second-
highest score by a Bangladesh batsman at the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup; only

Mahmudullah has scored more in an innings for the Tigers in the tournament (128* v NZ in
    2015).

    • Shakib Al Hasan has now posted four ODI half-centuries in succession; only once before has
a batsman managed more in a row for Bangladesh (Tamim Iqbal, 5 in 2012).

    • Lasith Malinga’s 3/39 last time out against Afghanistan for Sri Lanka meant that the veteran
has now moved inside the all-time top five list for most ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup wickets
(46), one of three Sri Lankans in that top five (also Muralitharan 68 and Vaas 49).

    • Mustafizur Rahman is in line to make his 50th ODI appearance for Bangladesh; he’s taken 87
wickets at an average of just 23.4 across his initial 49 outings for the Tigers, including 11 scalps
in seven previous games against Sri Lanka.

    • Mushfiqur Rahim (Bangladesh) registered his highest ever ODI score in a game versus Sri
Lanka; recording 144 in a 2018 clash, overall though he averages just 24.3 against Sri Lanka,
recording just two other 50+ scores against them in a total of 25 innings.

BD can be competitive against SL in shortened match. Match could be washed out as well with you also getting 1 point. Be Positive

Will be a delayed start. Don't think entire match will be washed out. Its so sad, we should have been discussing teams & player performances instead everyone's focus is on weather forecasts.

You are favourites but not overwhelmingly.
If you really want to reach the semis, you have to beat at least 2 out of the top 5 teams.

Last 4 encounters with Pakistan in ODIs , 4-0 in favor for us
Last 9 encounters against WI , 7-2 in favor for us. And please don't give excuses for Pak and WI, about those loss es. So we can hope for a win, certainly we can hope . And you can't say this SA team very poor. This SA team is no 3 in odi ranking with these lads. Let other sides beat this SA team then I shall talk about it again.

It is clearly visible that you don't know nothing about our team. Please search in internet about results of our team before commenting otherwise it is only reflecting your blind pessimism about us.
Joseph was pointing about our wins against WI ,in all 3 games in Ireland triseries, and u know that the pitches there resembles England. Not only that, we beat WI on their own soil 2-1.

Whoever chose the venues & scheduled the matches of minnows there deserves full applaud. I bet it was an in****. Kudos to the elites, great collusion.

This so-called ' kIrK@t w0rLd cUp' is an 'overseas-gala party' hosted by UK; the browns & the black-minnows are just temporary guests there who should take their leave when their drinks are finished.

Donít embarrass yourself with such naive statement. This SA is ranked 3rd in the world with these very same players.
Windies are ranked 9th and had to qualify for the WC, donít compare SA with WI. Windies lost to BD at home with Gayle and Russell, lost away series in BD, lost in Ireland series. Just because they thumped you it doesnít mean Windies are world beaters. They are average ODI side and have been average since 2015 WC, heck whole decade!

As for v Pak. Whatís the ODI results between BD v Pak since 2015?

I don't think we can qualify to the next round if of must-win games like today's one are washed out.

Apart from England match, who BTW are hosts and no 1 team, we were pretty competitive.

For a mid tier team like Bangladesh, qualifying for semis is a tough ask and is made even tougher with today's washout. Honestly we were favorites today in a 50 over contest.

Bangladesh were favourites for this game too...

The rain has ruined whatever spark the WC started with.

This WC has become a joke - They needed to set up the WC from June end to mid Aug as latest as knowing the British weather they should have been aware of how bad it is generally.

Man SL has to be the luckiest team at the WC. Two defeats have been turned into draws because of rain. Now all they need is rain against India and maybe a shock win here or there and they might even reach semis.

Problem is that period might not have been any better.

Effectively this means SL have one win and one loss from the last two games. I think they would have taken that before the WC started.

Usually more towards the end of June the weather does tend to get bit better than it has been so far this year but again there aren't any assurances but still would have been a better bet.

After Nidahas trophy some tension developed between SL and BD. So i was eagerly looking forward to this match. Rain strikes again. If i see 2 more matches getting washed out, then ICC has to take some action.

ICC just don't care about world cup. They just care about the wish and well-being of big 3. The timing of world cup has ruined it totally only for lower ranked side. They made a window for IPL and Ashes and then they scheduled WC. Weather was better ( in perspective of rain) in England in April (IPL time) and suposed to be good during Ashes. I don't think that matches involving England will get wash out.Who shall be responsible if Pakistan or BD doesn't qualify for semi for this washout? Disgusting

BD and Pak fans have been highly disrespectful towards Sri Lanka. Just because their teams have an edge on paper over Sri Lanka doesn't guarantee 2 points.

if matcher were played on paper, probably England, India or Australia would be awarded the trophy without any game being played at all.

Pakistan lost to WI and BD lost its games fair and square in match settings. Try to win those games first.

I don't think anyone is disrespecting SRL. People are just complaining about games being washed away. I dont want BD to go into semi cheaply with help of rain and give easy wins to Eng or India.

Maybe the odd individual Pak fan has criticised SL but not everyone is like that. Yes there is a streak against SL but all streaks would come to an end and you never know when, it just depends on which team is more hungry for a win in a WC game.

Apart from England match, who BTW are hosts and no 1 team, we were pretty competitive.

For a mid tier team like Bangladesh, qualifying for semis is a tough ask and is made even tougher with today's washout. Honestly we were favorites today in a 50 over contest.
Blew a great opportunity by not winning against New Zealand.

260 and the match was all Bangladesh
