England [213/2] beat West Indies [212] by 8 wickets in 19th Match of 2019 World Cup

After a convincing 106-run victory over Bangladesh, England will be up against a vibrant West Indies unit in their fourth match of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2019.

    Overview:

    England v West Indies

    Hampshire Bowl, Southampton
2019 ICC Menís Cricket World Cup, Match 19
    Friday, 14 June; 10.30am local, 09.30 GMT

After a shocking defeat to Pakistan, England aced every department against Bangladesh, as they first put up 386/6 on board and then bundled them out for 280 in the 49th over. The openers, determined not to fall into the trap of spin bowling, gave a perfect start, as Jason Roy stroked his way to 153. While Stokes has been giving some priceless overs with the ball, Moeen Ali is likely to return in the playing eleven, considering the number of left handers in the West Indies line-up.

On the other hand, the West Indies' bowlers might have lit up the tournament so far but it was the lack of application on the batting front that cost them the game against Australia. Their pacers started well against South Africa too, with Sheldon Cottrell picking up two early wickets, before no further play was possible due to rain interruption. The batsmen will have to step up, to set it up for their bowlers who will be challenged by the never-ending English batting line-up.

Once their very own, now their adversary, Jofra Archer will look to defy Chris Gayle and others, promising an exciting contest within a contest at the Hampshire Bowl on Friday.

    Key Players

Eoin Morgan (England): The England captain is yet to produce an innings that would match his stature in the tournament so far. Morgan, who averages 76.25 at the Hampshire Bowl and was the highest run-scorer for England in the ODI series against West Indies earlier this year, might be the biggest threat to his opponents on Friday.

Chris Gayle (West Indies): Chris Gayle had lit up the tournament with a power-packed 50 against Pakistan but could last only till the fifth over against Australia. The Universe Boss relishes batting against England averaging 51.42 against the hosts, contrary to his career average of 38.14 and will look to stamp his authority early on in the innings.

    Conditions

It would be a cloudy start to the day which would assist the fast bowlers early on, tempting the captains to field first. The afternoon will see rain becoming a bit showery with some brighter spells developing later.

    Squads

England: Eoin Morgan (c), Moeen Ali, Jofra Archer, Jonny Bairstow, Jos Buttler (wk), Tom Curran, Liam Dawson, Liam Plunkett, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Jason Roy, Ben Stokes, James Vince, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood.

West Indies: Jason Holder (c), Fabian Allen, Darren Bravo, Shannon Gabriel, Shimron Hetmyer, Evin Lewis, Nicholas Pooran, Andre Russell, Carlos Brathwaite, Sheldon Cottrell, Chris Gayle, Shai Hope, Ashley Nurse, Kemar Roach, Oshane Thomas

    England v West Indies

    • England have won 11 of their last 13 completed men’s ODIs against West Indies (L2),
however both West Indies’ victories in that run came when they met earlier this year.

    • England have won their last five ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup matches against West Indies,
this after losing their inaugural meeting in the tournament (1979 Final).

    • After losing five successive men’s ODIs at the Hampshire Bowl between August 2012 and
September 2015, England have won each of their last four matches there, including a 9
wicket victory against the Windies in September 2017.

    • West Indies have lost two of their four men’s ODI matches at the Hampshire Bowl, both those
defeats coming in tour matches against England (2012 & 2017); their two victories at the
venue both came at the 2004 ICC Champions Trophy, versus Bangladesh and Pakistan.

    • England have played just one men’s ICC Tournament match at the Hampshire Bowl before,
beating Sri Lanka by 49 runs (D/L) in the 2004 ICC Champions Trophy.

    • Chris Gayle (1,596) needs 24 runs in this match to become the leading runscorer in men’s
ODIs between England and West Indies, Viv Richards is currently top of this list with 1,619 runs.

    • Chris Gayle has scored 1,015 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup runs, more than any other player
competing in the 2019 edition, those runs coming at an average of 37.6 and a strike rate of
    93.4.

    • Ashley Nurse’s (West Indies) next ODI wicket will be his 50th, he has a bowling average of just
67.4 against England however, taking eight wickets from 85.5 overs bowled.

    • Jos Buttler’s (England) highest ever ODI score in his 111 innings came against West Indies
earlier in 2019, hitting 150 runs from 77 balls – a match in which a record 46 sixes were hit
    (England 24, West Indies 22).

    • England’s Mark Wood is three scalps away from reaching 50 ODI wickets, he took seven
wickets in four innings against the West Indies earlier this year, including one of two career 4-
    wicket hauls.

Light rain forecast in the morning, dry in the afternoon, so we should get 100 overs in.

    This could be a cracker!
WI should bowl first and try to get england out for under 230, by bowling bouncers! England are weak at playing bouncers as ireland showed just before wc.
Also, subplot, how will the WI players react to archer? And how will archer respond?
I'm looking forward to this one.
I wish both teams best of luck, but i have a feeling WI might cause an upset!

Most epic game of the RR stage potentially.

Been a long time since I’ve seen players don sweaters and play in the cold in ODIs, it’s a good throwback.

As fans of other teams you always want one team to run away and win majority of the games. This will open the tournament up for the other 3 spots. So England it is for fans of other countries.

As a neutral I've been looking forward to it. Last hurrah for the Universe Boss...

"New England" in ODI with express bowlers and power hitters are quite a novelty still to me (never really seen them play vs us).

And WI were the first team to shake this cup up with some innovative tactics. Gabriel & Russel & co aren't short of pace & the pitch looks lively.

    Game on!

If west Indies wins today. World Cup will be very serious!!
India, Australia, England, New Zealand and West Indies fighting for 4 spots.
Thriller games it will be.. SA still has chances to come back which will be unbelievable for sure.

Pak, SL, Agf and BD's might upset the above nation which will make world Cup more interesting.

England keeping control here, good contributions from Rooooooot.

Woakes, Archer and Wood have sixteen overs left between them.

Brainless batting by the WIs today. Have thrown so many wickets away. Could have easily got 275-295 today but instead theyíll probably end up scoring 230-240 ish.

Seems like they won't get more than 250-260 at most which should not be a tough chase for England.

My predicted scoreline is 270. They can still get there. For that they do not even need big boundaries.

Not much point in restricting West Indies to a gettable score if the best England batsmen keep limping off injured.
