Australia [381/5] beat Bangladesh [333/8] by 48 runs in 26th match of 2019 World Cup

Mashrafe Mortaza’s team has been excellent so far, but they need to do all the things they have done right so far, and more, when they face five-time champions Australia on Thursday, 20 June.

    Overview

    Australia v Bangladesh
    Trent Bridge, Nottingham
2019 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, Match 26
Thursday, 20 June; 10.30 am local, 09.30am GMT

Australia are doing what they do best at World Cups: dominate. An injury to Marcus Stoinis hasn’t set them back. And if their assistant coach Brad Haddin is to be believed, we haven’t seen the best of them yet. Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins are proving to be a nightmare to face. Aaron Finch and David Warner have been providing solid starts. And Steve Smith has been a rock in the middle order. At present, it’s difficult to see how Australia don’t make the final four.

Bangladesh, meanwhile, are leaving behind their own trail in this tournament. They have lost as many as they have won, but they have been clinical in the two games where they ended up on the right side of the result, and absolutely pushed New Zealand to the brink before coming up short. After bossing West Indies in a chase of 322 on Monday, they need to repeat all the things they did right in that game, and more, against a top-flight opposition in Australia. Mashrafe Mortaza’s men have been excellent so far, but can they live up to the challenge of competing against a five-time champion?

    Key players

Mitchell Starc (Australia): Among bowlers to have taken 20 or more wickets in World Cups, Starc’s average of 13.51 and strike-rate of 18.8 are the best ever. Starc takes just over two-and-a-half wickets a game and concedes runs at 4.30 an over. To put things in perspective, if teams faced only Starc when they batted, they would manage about 135 runs per innings before being bowled out. Those are staggering numbers.

Shakib Al Hasan (Bangladesh): Shakib is really showing why he is the world’s top-ranked all-rounder in ODIs. With five wickets in four matches, and two centuries and two fifties in four innings, Shakib has made it simply impossible to look past him anymore. In his current form, Shakib against Starc and Cummins could be a one-on-one battle made in cricketing heaven.

    Conditions

There could be some scattered showers in Nottingham on Thursday, but they will be accompanied by a gentle breeze, which could help in keeping interruptions to a minimum. Chances of rain gradually go down as the day progresses. As for the underfoot conditions, there will be assistance for fast bowlers early on, but if the games that have taken place so far are any indication, they could significantly ease out for batting later on.

    Squads

Australia: Aaron Finch (c), David Warner, Usman Khawaja, Steve Smith, Shaun Marsh, Alex Carey (wk), Marcus Stoinis, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Starc, Kane Richardson, Pat Cummins, Jason Behrendorff, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Adam Zampa, Nathan Lyon

Bangladesh: Mashrafe Mortaza (capt), Abu Jayed, Liton Das (wk), Mahmudullah, Mehidy Hasan, Mohammad Mithun (wk), Mohammad Saifuddin, Mosaddek Hossain, Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), Mustafizur Rahman, Rubel Hossain, Sabbir Rahman, Shakib Al Hasan, Soumya Sarkar, Tamim Iqbal

    Australia v Bangladesh
    • Australia and Bangladesh have been involved in 19 completed men’s One Day International
matches, losing on only one of those occasions (W18); a five-wicket defeat in Cardiff back in
    June 2005.
    • Australia and Bangladesh have only met in two previous ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup
matches; Australia recording victories in both, doing so by margins of seven wickets and 10
    wickets (1999 and 2007 respectively).
    • Australia have registered wins in three of their last four men’s ODI fixtures played at Trent
Bridge (L1) whilst Bangladesh have suffered losses in both of their previous outings at the
Nottingham venue in this format; this will be the first time these sides will have met at Trent
    Bridge in men’s ODI cricket.
    • Bangladesh come into this encounter having posted their joint-highest successful score in an
    ODI run chase (322/3 v West Indies), equalling their previous best against Scotland in 2015;
the Tigers have now claimed victory in six of their last eight completed men’s ODI matches,
those two losses did come in this tournament however.
    • Australia have an impressive recent record at the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, recording
victory in 10 of their last 11 matches at the tournament; the only loss in that run coming
against India at the Oval in this edition of the competition (9th June 2019).
    • Australia have won the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup more often than any other side (five
    times) and are looking to win this tournament for the fifth time in their last six attempts;
Bangladesh are yet to reach the semi-final stage of the tournament.
    • Steven Smith is set to register his 100th ODI innings for Australia in this match; he’s scored 3,674
runs across his previous 99 knocks, doing so at an average of 42 and heads into this contest
on the back of 59-ball 73 against Sri Lanka.
    • Shakib Al Hasan has managed to register 50+ runs in five successive ODI knocks; no batsman
has ever posted six half-centuries on the spin for Bangladesh, he’s currently tied for the
    record with Tamim Iqbal (2012).
    • The 189 put on between Shakib Al Hasan and Liton Das for Bangladesh in their most recent
ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup game (v West Indies) set a record for the highest ever
unbroken fourth wicket partnership in the tournament’s history.
    • Shakib Al Hasan is looking to become the first Bangladesh batsman to register three ICC
Men’s Cricket World Cup centuries, both of his to date coming in this edition of the
tournament; his 124 versus West Indies saw him register a false shot 24% of the time (24 of 99
    balls faced were false shots).

    Finally the match thread.

Itís in Trent Bridge, high scoring ground normally. Iíd still get Rubel in for Mossadekk or Mehidy. Need bit pace especially for Middle overs.

The starting XI Iíd go for.
    Tamim
    Soumya
    Shakib
    Mushfiqur
    Liton
    Mahmudullah
    Mehidy
    Saifuddin
    Mortaza
    Rubel
    Mustafizur

I donít think BD need both Mossadekk and Mehidy who do pretty similar jobs with the ball in ODI. Yes mossadekk is better hitter, but then you have Mahmudullah and Saifuddin who can hit a long ball. Mehidy is a technically decent with the bat and in the future will most likely to he batting in the top 5. Iíd go with Mehidy as the specialist offie. Aus are not the best at spin.

With this line up, thereís plenty of bowling options, thereís enough batting depth too. Rubel is value able in the middle overs.

Last completed ODI between Australia v Bangladesh was in the year 2011. Thereís not been a single ODI series between them since, itís been 8/9 years. The only team left for BD to beat in ODIís this decade. This might the last chance as there might not be any ODI series against them this year.

    This is my BD XI:

    Tamim.
    Sarkar.
    Shakib.
    Mushfiq.
    Litton.
    Mahmudullah.
    Mosaddek.
    Mehidy.
    Rubel.
    Mashrafe.
    Mustafiz.

I would play Rubel over Saifuddin because Rubel has more experience and pace.

Saifuddin is the highest wicket taker for BD so far. He is bowling ALR. Can hit the big shots. He is someone BD want to invest in, future replacement for Mashrafe. He has goos yorkers. Decent at the death. No way BD will drop him. If anyone it should be Mehidy or Mossadekk both similar offies, with Mehidy being more of a specialist and Mossadekk better batsman ATM.

Saifuddin will probably be eaten alive by Aussies. He has very little pace. He got most of his wickets when batsmen were already hitting.

Mosaddek is a proper batsman and he bowls decent part-time spin. Aussies are weaker against spin. Dropping Mosaddek will be a mistake in my opinion.

I still think BD will play Saif but I would pick Rubel for this game.

I don't want Sabbir to ever play for BD. Walking wicket.

If your information is correct, Rubel should replace Saifuddin and Mithun should replace Mosaddek.

It doesnt matter. Who doesnít get eaten alive by good batting at times? Didnít Rashid Khan go for 100+ against England?
Nothing to be fearful, it happens, many star, hyper up bowlers have been smashed too. Saifuddin is gutsy, good death overs bowler for BD. He can bat, big hitter too. Most havenít seen him bat hence why they donít know his capability with the bat.

Want BD to win here and avail any outside opportunity there may be to secure 4th.

Think they should bat first if possible. Despite a marvellous chase vs WI - you just know that they weren't expecting to chase 322 when they inserted them.

BD's batting stands a better chance posting than their bowling does skittling, especially the way matches seem to be going in this WC.

You want Mithun back in? LOL. Seriously? Another middle order in whats already a packed middle order? Sabbir has the big shots, flamboyance, dynamic batsmen. Mithun is a sort who steadies the ship, accumulates, and that. We have Mushy and Mahmudullah for that. Need someone with X factor, big shots if Saifuddin and Mossadekk are out, Sabbir and Rubel should come in.

I hope Saifuddin will not end up like Ziaur Rahman (who used to play as pace bowling all-rounder 4-5 years ago). Saifuddin is looking good but he needs to be a bit more economical.

I would go with the same XI as yours.

Ideally i would have picked Saifuddin over Rubel for a few reason:
    1) He is on form, 9 wickets from 4 matches so high on confidence
    2) He is a better bowler with the new ball and death although lacks penetration in the middle
    3) He is a good fielder and a very handy batsman for no. 8 position. Miraz and Mash have not contributed anywhere near their potential as lower order batsmen.

However Saif is probably out injured

Mate Saifuddin is NOTHING like Ziaur Rahman.

Saifuddin is a proper bowler. Infact, he can bowl yorkers at the death with the same effectiveness as world class bowler. Lacks express pace but much much better in all aspects of bowling than Ziaur. Also his batting is not his strongest suit, but he is not a hack like Ziaur. He can play at anywhere between 2nd to 5th gear. Technically adept too.

Don't ever compare Saifuddin to Ziaur. That would be like comparing Kohli to Sabbir.

Mash himself never lived up to his batting potential. Saifuddin is someone who has the mindset and technique of a proper lower middle order batsman. He played at no.7 during 2016 U-19 CWC and scored some runs. Already averaging close to 30 in ODIs.

I would like to Bd bat first and score around 300. Though initially bowlers would get some help from the pitch but I do believe this Aussie team will crack if they are given some runs to chase.

    I think BD should chase.

Bowl first and restrict Australia under 280. Chase it down. Simple!

Spinners will need to do well.

If Bd can restrict Aus under 300 I would take it but I think Bd wont be able to chase down anything over 300. We will loose the match in first half if Aus bat first and score over 300. But if we bat first and even we score 260-280 there will be fight from the boys.

    Win toss bat first?

Itís a tricky one this. Same ground Windies bowled Pakistan out for the lowest of the tournament 105. Battinf first what if Aus bowlers get the movements and bounce. A lot will depend on the wicket. Hoping a wicket suited to Subcontinent style

Aus win here will mean everyone below Bangladesh are defo out. But BD and SL have outside chance if NZ lose their last 4.

Only if it were that simple!!

Chasing against Starc and Cummins is anything but simple. They can turn the game upside-down in a single over.

BD must bat first if they win the toss, put up a decent total and try to choke Aus with spinners, that chase against WI was awesome but Aus is a different beast altogether while defending a total.

InshAllah Bangladesh will win. Am getting good vibes. If BD do the basics well, field well, and take their chances well. Aus is beatable. Pk, SL and WI had them at a good position to win. Aus is no England or India.

Pitch report: "Slightest tinge of live grass, even covering," says Mel Jones. "A couple of cracks there as well, which means it's a drier wicket and a belter."
It seems like a good batting pitch. They should bat first then.

Looks like BD will be chasing. Finch won the toss and decided to bat first.

    Australia made three chances.

Stoinis is back; Marsh is out.

I can tolerate Athar. He is 500 times better than Shamim.

We probably don't have anyone better than Athar.

I don't want difficult wicket. I want to play on wicket that Ind and pak have played in their last match.

That wicket offered spin and bounce.
