    New Zealand v Pakistan | Match 33, World Cup | Edgbaston | June 26, 2019 | New Zealand innings

Another win should all but seal New Zealandís spot in the semi-finals, while for Pakistan, it would be the bare minimum they need to do to remain in contention.

    Overview

    New Zealand v Pakistan
    Edgbaston, Brimingham
2019 ICC Menís Cricket World Cup, Match 33
    Wednesday, 26 June; 10.30am GMT, 09.30am local

The tournamentís most consistent team against its most unpredictable one. New Zealand are unbeaten in this World Cup. Pakistan have done what Pakistan do best Ė they have fluttered between being indifferent and being spectacular. It makes it impossibly hard to determine which way this contest will go, and itís the kind of uneasy excitement this tournament needs as teams begin to scrap ever more intensely for the final four spots.

A win for New Zealand should more or less take them there. Kane Williamsonís men have been outstanding across departments, led by the captain himself. Ross Taylor has been a supporting act, but an effective one at that, while Colin de Grandhomme has struck vital runs and chipped in with economical overs to complement the pace attack.

Speaking of pace, Lockie Fergusonís fearsome speeds have made him one of the most exciting prospects to watch in this tournament. Trent Boult continues to penetrate the best defences with his swing, while Matt Henry and James Neesham have all chipped in consistently. In a tournament where wrist-spinners were expected to rule, New Zealandís performance is the ultimate proof that pace is still the order of the day.

Pakistan were excellent against South Africa, but they are now at the stage where they need to sustain that throughout the matches that remain. They have been woefully slow to start and it has left them to play some hard catch-up. There is little doubt, however, that Sarfaraz Ahmedís men can pull it off.

    Key players

Kane Williamson (New Zealand): Williamson never ceases to amaze with his sponge-like ability to absorb pressure. Along with his unquestionable class, Williamson brings fantastic temperament, just the kind of which is required to succeed in a high-stakes environment, such as the World Cup.

Mohammad Amir (Pakistan): The left-arm pacer is delivering big time on the promise he showed when he arrived on the international scene a decade ago, as a 17-year-old. Amir in this tournament has been more incisive than he has in years. His battle against Williamson should be a mouth-watering one.

    Conditions

There is rain expected on match eve, but by the time Wednesday comes around, the weather should have eased out considerably. There will, nevertheless, be a light cloud cover and some mild breeze, so watch out for some wicked in-swingers and away-angling rippers from Boult and Amir.

    Squads

New Zealand: Kane Williamson (c), Ross Taylor, Tom Latham (wk), Tom Blundell (wk), Mitchell Santner, Colin de Grandhomme, Lockie Ferguson, Tim Southee, Trent Boult, Colin Munro, Ish Sodhi, Henry Nicholls, Martin Guptill, Matt Henry, Jimmy Neesham

Pakistan: Sarfaraz Ahmed (c, wk), Asif Ali, Hasan Ali, Shaheen Afridi, Mohammad Amir, Babar Azam, Mohammad Hafeez, Mohammad Hasnain, Imam-ul-Haq, Shadab Khan, Shoaib Malik, Wahab Riaz, Haris Sohail, Imad Wasim, Fakhar Zaman

    New Zealand v Pakistan

    • Pakistan picked up a six-wicket win in their last men’s ODI against New Zealand (9th
November 2018), ending a 12-game losing streak against the Black Caps.
    • This will be the ninth ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup meeting between New Zealand
and Pakistan; the Black Caps won their first and most recent meetings, though they
bookend a six-game losing run against Pakistan at the tournament from 1983 to 1999.
    • New Zealand boast a 75% win rate in completed men’s ODIs thus far in 2019 (12/16);
the last time they had a higher win rate from completed ODIs during a calendar year
    was in 2004 (83%, 19/23).
    • New Zealand have won four of their seven completed men’s ODIs at Edgbaston,
including a four-wicket win over South Africa at the venue earlier on in this
    tournament.
    • Pakistan have only managed to record three victories in their last 18 men’s ODI
fixtures (L15); they did register a 49-run win over South Africa in their most recent
    outing however.
    • Pakistan have won only one of their last five ODIs played at Edgbaston (L4), winning
the toss only once in that span as well; the sole victory in that run did come in their
last game at the Birmingham venue however (v South Africa, 7th June 2017).
    • Ross Taylor is set to eclipse Nathan Astle (223) as the outright fifth-most capped
player for New Zealand in men’s ODI history; Taylor is the team’s historical leading
run-scorer (8,226) and has knocked a half-century in each of his last three ODIs
    against Pakistan.
    • Wahab Riaz has taken 32 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup wickets and requires just
three more to eclipse Imran Khan (34) as the second-most prolific wicket-taker at the
tournament for Pakistan (Wasim Akram, 55).
    • Martin Guptill is just 58 runs shy of becoming only the second Black Caps player to
score 1,000 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup runs (Stephen Fleming - 1,075); Guptill
finished with a knock of 57 runs in his only previous World Cup clash against Pakistan
    (2011).
    • Pakistan’s Mohammad Amir has bowled 276 legal balls at ICC Men’s Cricket World
Cup 2019, none of them have been struck for six; the best rate of the tournament.

I remember when Pakistan's head to head record was far superior. Now it's just about even.

By the way, I think Pakistan has more wins, not NZ.

I think the image is wrong. Cricinfo Statsguru has it the other way around. Well done by NZ nevertheless, we used to be totally dominant against them.

The last decade has been good for us and has really been a golden era, despite the lack of silverware.

This is the greatest NZ team of all time!
Even better than the team who came so close to winning the world cup last time round, but fell agonising short at the final hurdle! This team can well go one step better than that team and lift the wc!

Only 1 thing stands in their way -.

    DESTINY!

It is pakistan's destiny to win this wc!
How else can you explain a team that was 2nd bottom of the table, with only 1 win, at the half way stage of the qualifying group, is now on the brink to qualify for the semis!

    Back to reality....

Pak had struggled to take wickets in the first 10 overs!
This has caused us huge problems and means teams have scored big against us. We have to take at least 1 - 2 wickets in the first 10 overs to hold back teams scoring big.
Amir is starting to get back his form but he needs a partner to open with!
    This has to be hasnain!
Pak selected hasnain over shinwari, junaid and haris rauf!
    SO USE HIM!
Give him 2 slips, regardless of how many runs he leaks and tell him to bowl fast and get us 2 early wickets!
Shaheen should be rested for this game and replaced with hasnain, rest of the team should be the same as the last game!

But pak will play hasan ali instead of shaheen.....

If you really think this, you should put lots of money down on Pakistan with the bookies, because standard independent bookies from England have NZ as strong favourites.

Only Pakistan fans who let their hearts rule over their heads see Pakistan as favourites.

New Zealand batting is much stronger than Pak. Bowling wise if Amir continues his good form and Wahab stays in control too then we will match NZ. Shame Pak will not replace Afridi with Husnain, who looked more threatening on this tour. Regretfully I feel NZ would be too strong for us after a competitive game.

Even if NZ win today, Pakistan can still get thru if Eng lose to both India and NZ which is not terribly unlikely.

New Zealand haven't really been tested. New Zealand openers are out of form and they won't last long against red hot Amir, Williamson and Rosco are the main threat but they struggle against spin. Win the toss bat first and score 260 and it will be enough. Another danger man is Colin de Grandhomme as he played for Warwickshire, he knows this ground inside out, he was the game changer against Proteas. Pakistan has got this

Imam is particulary weak against bouncers!
Haris started to duck bouncers against SA, which is the best ploy in my opinion, as trying to hook or pull, when you are not good at those shots will get you caught out or give you a very bad headache!.

Guptil always scores against Pak even when in bad form. Williamson and Taylor would also be a big threat. Many other useful bats in the their team as well. Outfield is wet so spin may not be a big factor if Pak bowling first.

If Sarfraz wins the toss and bowls first because of the rain, then thatís it. Hope he learnt something from Australia and India games. Our batsman start pissing their pants when they see a drop of rain. Should never bowl first.

Thai World Cup a lot of the batsmen got hit in the head, Amla, Rashid Khan, Liton Das, another Afghan player, Usman Khwaja. Alhamdullilah nothing serious happened and they were brave enough to continue - but once they resumed batting they didnít look like the same player. I liked how Wahab played against Australia, he handled it very well against Aussie pacers. It was good when it lasted
