    Pakistan v Afghanistan | Match 36, World Cup | Leeds | 29th June, 2019 | Afghanistan innings

Pakistan, with their new found confidence stemming from back-to-back wins, will look to put on another clinical performance against Afghanistan to keep themselves in contention for a spot in their semi-finals.

    Overview:

    Pakistan v Afghanistan

    Headingley, Leeds
2019 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, Match 36
    Saturday, 29 June; 10.30am GMT, 09.30am local

No other team can quite demonstrate the game's unpredictable nature like Pakistan can. Their recent surge in form, with back-to-back wins against South Africa and New Zealand, has brought about interesting prospects in the final leg of the league stage at the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2019. They have bounced back strongly from their initial setbacks, much like they did in 1992, and now find themselves in a position identical to the one during their victorious campaign 27 years ago.

While Mohammad Amir has been a consistent performer with the ball, Babar Azam's match-winning innings at Edgbaston comes as a huge positive for the Sarfaraz Ahmed-led side. A win against Afghanistan on Saturday will keep them well and truly in the semi-final race, as the competition stiffens.

Afghanistan, much like West Indies, have shown flashes of brilliance for brief moments in almost each of their matches, but are yet to put on a complete match performance, which keeps them deprived of their first win in this tournament. While the bowlers put on a strong performance in their last two games against India and Bangladesh, lack of partnerships with the bat cost them on both occasions.

The Gulbadin Naib-led side will look to seek confidence from their warm-up fixture against Pakistan, where they had emerged victorious by three wickets.

    Key Players:

Haris Sohail (Pakistan): The aggressive left-hander has probably been the source of much needed inspiration for Pakistan with his game changing contributions in the last two games. Haris Sohail, who scored 89 and 68 in his last two outings, will eye another match-winning contribution on Saturday.

Mujeeb Ur Rahman (Afghanistan): The 18-year old has been posing a lot of problems for the top-order batsmen in the last few matches. Mujeeb, whose spell of 2/33 almost got Afghanistan over the line in the Asia Cup fixture against Pakistan last year, will look to produce his best to power his side their first win of the tournament.

    Conditions:

It will be a dry and sunny day with some gentle south-easterly winds. Dryness might bring the spinners into play on a hot at humid day at Headingley. Both teams will look to bat first as batting is expected to get difficult as the day progresses.

    Squads:

Pakistan: Sarfaraz Ahmed (c, wk), Asif Ali, Hasan Ali, Shaheen Afridi, Mohammad Amir, Babar Azam, Mohammad Hafeez, Mohammad Hasnain, Imam-ul-Haq, Shadab Khan, Shoaib Malik, Wahab Riaz, Haris Sohail, Imad Wasim, Fakhar Zaman

Afghanistan: Gulbadin Naib (c), Noor Ali Zadran, Hazratullah Zazai, Rahmat Shah (wk), Asghar Afghan, Hashmatullah Shahidi, Najibullah Zadran, Samiullah Shinwari, Mohammad Nabi, Rashid Khan, Dawlat Zadran, Aftab Alam, Hamid Hassan, Mujeeb ur Rahman, Ikram Ali Khil

    • Pakistan have won all three of their previous men’s ODIs against Afghanistan, this will
be their first ever meeting at an ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup however.
    • Afghanistan have lost their last seven men’s ODIs, all at this ICC Men’s Cricket World
Cup, their longest losing run in the format.
    • Pakistan are in the exact same position at ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019 (W3, L3,
NR1) as they were at this stage in 1992 when they went on to become champions; to
continue that similarity, they need to win all of their remaining games through to the
    final.
    • Pakistan have played five previous ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup matches at
Headingley in Leeds, beating Canada (1979), Sri Lanka (1983) and Australia there
(1999) but also losing to Australia (1975) and England (1979).
    • Pakistan have lost their last three men’s ODIs at Headingley, all those defeats coming
at the hands of England however (2019, 2016, 2010).
    • Babar Azam’s 101* in Pakistan’s most recent ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019
match against New Zealand was his 10th in ODI cricket, he also became the 10th
Pakistani to score a century in the history of the tournament.
    • Wahab Riaz (Pakistan) has taken 32 wickets in his 18 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup
innings, he needs two more to tie Imran Khan (34 wickets) in second place for most
wickets for Pakistan in ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup history (Wasim Akram 55).
    • Hashmatullah Shahidi (Afghanistan) hit 97* off 118 balls in his previous ODI against
Pakistan, the highest score of his ODI career.
    • Rashid Khan (Afghanistan) has conceded the most sixes (12) of any bowler at ICC
Cricket World Cup 2019, however 11 of those came in the match against England (1
    v Australia).
    • Gulbadin Naib (Afghanistan) has taken nine wickets at the ICC Men’s Cricket World
Cup 2019 so far, he needs one more to equal the record for most wickets by an
Afghani at a single edition of the tournament (10 wickets – Shapoor Zadran in 2015).

I dont think Afghanistan has any chance against Pakistan now. Afridi and Amir are in red hot form, they will damage the already weak Afghani batting. Mujeeb s the only threat whle bolwing and he can be seen off.

Should be 9 points after this game

    Pakistan v Afghanistan | Match 36, World Cup | Leeds | Jun 29, 2019 | Match Thread

Hugely disappointed with what´s trending on Twitter in Pakistan about Afghanistan as a team and as a nation. Politics could´ve waited for a day. Really disappointed!

Regardless. If Afghanistan bat first and get anything over 230, given their highly capable spin attack, we´re in for a seriously tight encounter, and anything can happen from thereon. I foresee a much closer contest than suggested on papers.

It´s a match against the weakest team of the tournament, yet the legs of quite a few fans must be shaking a bit today I suppose. This is where the fun lies of supporting and following this unpredictable Pakistan team.

Here´s hoping for a good match!

And maybe this time, we should offer them no help NONE whatsoever. These lot are proven time and time again to be namak harams. I say this sadly as I used to consider them our brothers.

It is not a proper spin friendly wicket, it is leeds, up in the north. Our Pacers will do the job. It is not Edgbaston.

Batting first would have been difficult coz the par score on this ground is 250/260.
Maybe we'll bowl them out for under 150 and chase it in like 20 overs.
There's more chance we'll improve our nrr bowling first than batting.

No point shying away or getting nervous about chasing

Things will not be always in our favour where we are batting first

I think it is actually good to practice chasing against a team like Afghanistan

Ian Bishop has a smile on his face because it's a beautifully sunny day. "The ground looks a picture," he says. Shorter square boundaries. The pitch has a few cracks, but nothing to worry about. It's expected to start slow and get better for batting as the day goes on, with the sun baking it.

Woo hoo, Pakistan's World Cup comes to Yorkshire.

Would've liked to bat first but our bowlers are high on confidence after the last two matches.

Just go out their and execute your plans with skill. Batting or biwling first doesnt matter. Most teams will bat 1st vs PAK so after the NZ chase they have a good chance here as well to win back 2 back while chasing.

That will only boost the morale even more.

    Lets do this!

So acrually a good toss to lose then.

Exactly I just saw their batting line up and I was like seriously man I bet not a single player averages over 25 if you don’t bundle a team out like this in less than 200 you have serious problems

Really good toss for Pakistan to lose I see Afghanistan batsmen getting bowled out in less than 200 and they really need to get that shahidi out he plays like 80s test match players and scores 90s off 150 balls against us

Pak should have rested Wahab and played Husnain. Amir and Afridi experience was enough to bowl out Afghans with Husnain probably knocking couple with his raw pace. Why risk Wahab's injury in this match.
