    England v India | Match 38, World Cup | Edgbaston | 30th June, 2019 | Match Thread

Englandís ICC Menís Cricket World Cup 2019 hopes are hanging in the balance ahead of their clash with India, at Edgbaston, on 30 June.

    Overview

    England v India
    Edgbaston, Birmingham
2019 ICC Menís Cricket World Cup, Match 38
Sunday, 30 June; 10.30am GMT, 9.30 am local

Pre-tournament favourites England started their campaign on a high, winning four out of their first five games. However, successive defeats to Sri Lanka and Australia have left the hosts needing to win at least one Ė and potentially both Ė of their final two matches to reach the semi-finals. Their task, against an India side who recently usurped Eoin Morganís men to reach the summit of the MRF Tyres ICC Menís ODI Team Rankings, is daunting.

Virat Kohliís side are unbeaten in the competition so far, having overcome South Africa, Australia, Pakistan, Afghanistan and West Indies, while seeing their contest with New Zealand abandoned due to rain. Whatís more, they boast happy memories of facing England at Edgbaston, having triumphed in the final of the ICC Champions Trophy six years ago.

    Key players

Adil Rashid (England): Much focus will be on whether Jason Royís return to the XI will bring about a change in fortunes, but Rashid could be even more crucial. Edgbaston is notorious for taking spin Ė as evidenced by New Zealandís clash with Pakistan Ė and England need their ace spinner to rediscover his best form. Rashid, whoís taken more ODI wickets than any other bowler since the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2015, has managed just seven at an average of 51.85 in the competition so far.

Virat Kohli (India): Kohli has passed 50 in each of his last four innings without progressing to three figures, a run that could change very soon. His batting, as ever, has oozed class. Given his penchant for the big occasion, donít be surprised if Edgbastonís raucous crowd Ė combined with the enormity of facing England Ė brings out his best.

    Conditions

If Pakistan's game against New Zealand offers any indication, the pitch should provide plenty of assistance for spin and make a score around 270 competitive. The weather is set fair, with temperatures reaching as high as 25 degrees Celsius.

    Squads

England: Eoin Morgan (c), Moeen Ali, Jofra Archer, Jonny Bairstow, Jos Buttler (wk), Tom Curran, Liam Dawson, Liam Plunkett, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Jason Roy, Ben Stokes, James Vince, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood

India: Virat Kohli (c), Jasprit Bumrah, Yuzvendra Chahal, MS Dhoni (wk), Ravindra Jadeja, Kedar Jadhav, Dinesh Karthik, Hardik Pandya, Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, Mohammed Shami, Vijay Shankar, Rohit Sharma, Kuldeep Yadav

England have won three of their last four men’s ODIs against India (L1); the last three
matches of that span were played in England (2018) with India winning the first in
Nottingham before the hosts bounced back to win the next two games.
    • India are undefeated in their last three ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup games against
    England (W2, T1), including a victory over them at Edgbaston in the 1999 edition;
England had won three of the first four clashes with India in this tournament.
    • India have won 16 of their last 17 completed ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup matches
(L1); they have won all five of their completed games so far in the ICC Men’s Cricket
World Cup 2019 and are the only unbeaten side in the competition.
    • England have won their last three men’s ODIs at Edgbaston, their last defeat at the
venue in Birmingham coming in 2014 against India.
    • After suffering back-to-back losses on home turf, England are looking to avoid
recording three straight men’s ODI defeats at home for the first time since May-
September 2014; they went on to taste five successive loses in that span, including
    three defeats against India.
    • Ben Stokes is yet to be hit for a six at ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019 so far, every
other bowler to bowl 30+ overs has been hit for a maximum.
    • Ben Stokes has managed to score 50+ in his last two ODI knocks for England; only
once before has the all-rounder managed a longer run of such scores, that streak in
2016 saw him hit two 50s before scoring a century against Bangladesh.
    • Kuldeep Yadav (India) will make his 50th ODI appearance in this match, he already
has 91 wickets to his name and his career best figures (6/25) came against England in
a match at Trent Bridge in 2018.
    • MS Dhoni (India) has scored 1,504 runs against England in ODI cricket, he needs 20
more for the most by a batsman from either side in the history of this fixture (Yuvraj
    Singh, 1,523 runs).
    • Virat Kohli has scored 243 ODI runs at Edgbaston, more than any active England
player (Eoin Morgan 239), the India captain has been dismissed just once before in
five previous innings at the venue in Birmingham (22*, 43, 1*, 81*, 96*; James
Anderson the only bowler to dismiss him there in ODIs).

India should win against England, NZ or BD or even Pak. There is no ifs and buts. You have to beat these teams if you want to be WC finalist.

The biggest challenge for India remains Australia as it was around 16 years ago and India really have to be at their very best to best Australia in the WC knockout(probably the two finalists).

Sri Lanka as well and India are almost equal to Windies.

India are behind Australia(39%), Pakistan (42%) and SA(43%) in terms of win% in ODI records.

England are an elite team overall (in Tests they have good record against most teams except Australia) Sri Lanka, NZ are historically mid-rank teams! India actually jumped from mid-rank to higher in last two decades while Pakistan have regressed in the same period.

In ODIs, one may argue both Sri Lanka and New Zealand have been historically superior to kiwis. England haven't ever reached semi final of a World Cup after 1992.

India is an elite team and there is no shame in losing to them. However, England must show that they are prepared to bring their A game today, because if they play to their max capacity, they are more than capable of downing India regardless of how the latter play.

India start as favorites because they are high on confidence and their key players are in form, but I believe that England will also bring their best today. Should be a fascinating contest between the two best ODI teams in the world.

It is a pity that we may not get to see them play in the final, but it is not normal for everything in life to be perfect.

Are you going to have a similar meltdown in this game, like the one you had in the Ind/Afg game?

Get ready for a true run fest. All teams are playing on tired rank turners where batting 2nd is near impossible, yet ENG in basically a do or die match get a batting paradise.

Only issue can they handle the pressure.

Not a good start for us
This will also ensure whether India is capable enough of restricting a good opposition for lesser score (a quality batting unit like England) AND also if their batting is good enough to chase a good target (England will surely set some good score at least when they bat first they may score freely!) This is needed for us to know if India is good enough to win the world cup (because this kind of loss of toss can happen even on Finals!)

Not sure how this impacts on other teams who are looking for SF berth though

England, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are more worried about the match result than India. Indian fans are cool. No matter whether India wins or loses, some other team (teams) will go out of tournament.

It seems England have won a good toss on what is supposed to be a fresh pitch.

Our middle order in its current form, leaves a lot to be desired. It's gonna be a real test for our batsmen against English pacers in the second half.

Hope Rahul don't throws his wicket away and Pant makes full use of this opportunity well, today.

    Expecting a good contest!

England winning this. 300+ on cards. This is not like day and night match in India , where chasing is easy-peasy due to dew. India can't chase anything over 200 against this English attack.

just a passing thought...not that i want this to happen..if it was to rain now and match called off....i guess that would be it for eng, bd, nz ....

Perfect for India, as they may have to chase in knock out stages. I am praying for Rohit Sharma and Kohli to fail with the bat so that other batsmen are forced to take responsibility of chase.
