This just proves that Sarfraz is a spineless captain who wanted to keep his seniors happy instead of thinking about the team.

Hafeez should retire with some dignity left or he will be treated the same way his seniors were treated.. Our players don't believe in leaving gracefully.

Thatís just what I had assumed, 1 in 10 innings success and even that is a modest 50 usually against an average bowling attack in batsmen friendly conditions.

What genius , those Ďbrainsí that selected his name probably first on the team sheet every time on the basis of his classy batting - does this not deserve an inquiry or at least some academic research as to how a flop player managed to play so many ICC tournaments from 2006 to 2019? And if he decides not to retire and carry on like Misbah till mid 40s , there is NO power in the world that will stop him from playing the next World Cup too ó after all his Ďexperienceí will sell even more in 4 years time
If you add his record in the World t20s his average wil go down further . He averages like 22 across 3 t20 world cups . Such a curse to the team honestly. Heís a bonafide mental midget and never been a man for a crisis on the biggest stage

exactly but they do, why? look at Dhoni should have retired on a high instead he is getting negative publicity. He too got rid of two players who were overage and were past their best.

the problem i have is that asian players play past their sell-by date and continue to play, they never give youth a chance and they never try to mould someone into that position by giving assistance.

Greedy selfish players who put there success above country.

Indeed - so these stats for T20 and earlier for ODI World Cups show that in 49 innings Hafeez has gone out to bat representing Pakistan on the biggest stage, this legend of all legends has scored 4 half-centuries , yes just 4 times in 49 outings ó and heís supposedly selected before anyone else for the big tournaments because thatís where his Ďexperienceí is meant to count for something ..

and they keep selecting him, what a celebration of mediocrity!

My miscalculation - itís even worse than that.

    Itís not 4 out of 49, itís 4 half centuries out of 53 innings. (29 ODIs + 24 T20s).

Whatís that as a percentage to predict the probability of Hafeez being successful when going out to bat in a big match, where success is getting 50 or more - Iím getting 7.5% chance of success , not exactly impressive is it for the player in your team who has the most secure place in the team of all for nearly 15 years?

Even if Hafeez doesn't elect to retire, PCB should give him some "rest" in the upcoming tours. Slowly phase him out and eventually he will call it a day.

If he is in the team after the WC, if he isn’t performing he is likely to be dropped. Look at Sarfraz statements, he said you have to always back the senior players

Look at Australia in 2015 when they won the WC, Johnson , Haddin, Watson, and Clarke all retired after the WC. I think all 4 retired from international cricket within a year. Hafeez is nearly 40. He should not be selected. He is only going to get worse. Getting out to part timers isn’t a coincidence.

Well talking about 101 ways how not to bat against extreme pace, hereís some top quality coaching material :

    Shoaib Akhtar v Mohammed Hafeez

    https://youtu.be/tAnztrQEsL8

Watch from 1 min 25 seconds ó notice how the stump is cartwheeling at the same time as the batsman completing his follow through.

For sure it is time for him to quit. Despite having so many critics over the years he hasn't done that bad a job. Time to gradually introduce the next generation.

There is no excuse left for not retiring now. The next world cup is in 4 years and no way should Pakistan take a batsman to the tournament who will be officially 43 years old.

Haris at #4 and Rizwan at #5 are good enough replacements for Hafeez and Malik.

Any news on Hafeez retirement plans?

I was planning to come out of retirement as a Pakistan fan again after World Cup 2019 in the hope that Pakistan might start playing with 11 players once more after playing with 10 and sometimes less for most of the last decade and half.

Malik has retired and done his bit for Pakistan cricket, hoping others follow his example.

    Hafeez in odis

We saw how the team almost got through the finish line but our middle order disappointed again. Hafeez has been in the form of his life and is regularly playing big innings in t20s. If we can get those runs in odis Pakistan can really benefit from those as he has the ability to score quick runs at the last 20 overs of a match.

Is it time to consider Hafeez for 2023 world Cup and make a place for him in the team?

Hafeez should be leading us in the next WC. Babar should worry about his batting more than anything. Scoring useless runs, Pakistanís Tendulkar.

Let's not get carried away. Just because he is having a purple patch in T20Is doesn't mean the same will translate to ODIs.

His ODI career has been done for two years according to his own admission. Besides Pakistan has a perfectly capable group of 11-15 players; many of whom such as Imad Wasim and Haris Sohail aren't even selected.

Bringing back 40 year old Hafeez though is not the solution. Selecting the right players is.

Time to move on from hafeez, just because we are selecting garbage players like danish / Asif / Shadab it doesnt mean we revert back to hafeez.

Its bout time we groomed haider Ali and another batsmen in for number 5 and 6 spots in the team over next 2 years.

Hasn't played a game since the World Cup and nor did he participate in the Pakistan Cup, need to move on from Hafeez and allow him to focus on the t20 Cup coming up. Plus is he fit for ODIs?

Exactly mate, he's not gonna make it for the next 50-over World Cup and management need to be realistic of that matter, add to boot he's not played a List-A/ODI since the World Cup and so the question is is he able to handle playing the longer version now?

This is the problem people reverting back as oppose to moving forward, need to groom future prospects now that will be part of the 50-over World Cup.

There's nobody to groom. The list of TTF's is endless. Even Chacha has been tried. Unless Saud Shakeel can develop a power game in the next two years then Hafeez might walk into the side in 2023.

Well there's a few to hand still, Kamran Ghulam had a good Pakistan Cup which people forget plus Hammad Azam has looked good of late. They also should call the bluff of Abdullah's selection and have him play rather than warm the bench, there are players other than Hafeez and that's what people need to realise.

Danish was a good pick, not management's fault he didn't come off but again 2 ODIs is not enough to conclude a player isn't good enough.

He is 40 years old, I doubt he will be in this form in 2023. Hafeez is eventually going to decline. We need to be ready for that. He should play the World T20 this year and we should then move on from him. I get it he is in great form. But he has played for Pakistan long enough, a decline is coming so let’s hope he keeps up his form till the World T20. Because I have a feeling in the next year or so we will see a decline.

He did bugger all in the WC and thankfully has retired. At this rate Zaheer Abbas also has a chance. Sooner or later the batting will take shape for this decade. As long as Babar has some sort of form we will be competitive and as some of the younger players develop, we will find another 2 and start to challenge. HA has to get his chance and although won't uproot many trees because of his temperament, he will win some games. We are yet to see Saud and the Mubashir from Northerns, who looked to have more than enough ability. Don't look back, its the easy route and more importantly it doesn't work.

I'm pretty sure he is retired from ODIs. He may not have announced it formally but its obvious there is a tacit understanding that he is done from all formats besides T20Is.

If he wasn't he wouldn't have repeatedly and specifically said that he will retire from international cricket after the T20 World Cup.

I’m pretty sure he did ok in England last year. I’m not saying he should or shouldn’t retire but the simple question is..is there a better middle order spinning all rounder ?
    Shadab no
    Nawaz no
    Zafar no
    Iftakhar no.

So therefore it stands to reason that where there is room for rookies and hacks like asif Ali and danish we should let these guys get enough runs in first class or t20’s before letting them replace hafeez. Odi is not a place to keep throwing more than one youngster at a time. Haider Ali is ok to try..but when you look at how awful we are in the middle to lower order I would go for hafeez.

Now when there’s easier matches like in Zimbabwe or at home I absolutely agree that we can try more than one youngster but in matches like now against South Africa he only didn’t get in on some technicalit. Otherwise he walks into this team.
