India vs New Zealand | Semi Final 1, World Cup | Old Trafford | 9th Jul, 2019 | New Zealand Innings

After more than five weeks of exciting cricket, the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup now enters its decisive phase as India and New Zealand face-off in the first semi-final at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

    Overview

    India v New Zealand

    Old Trafford, Manchester
    2019 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, Semi-Final 1
Tuesday, 09 July; 10.30am local time; 09.30am GMT

The Indian team, despite being plagued by a couple of injuries, have topped the World Cup league stage points table with seven wins from eight completed games. While Rohit Sharma has been at his fluent best, having already scored five centuries so far, his new opening partner Lokesh Rahul has put up scores of 77 and 111 in his last two innings.

The bowling attack too, led by the ever reliable Jasprit Bumrah has been delivering on a consistent basis. Virat Kohli will have some interesting decisions to make in the bowling department, as he seeks a perfect combination for an all important clash on Tuesday.

The 2015 runners-up New Zealand, have had a mixed campaign so far. Powered by some collective bowling performances and led by their skipper Kane Williamson with the bat, the BlackCaps had notched up five wins from their first six games which included a complete washout against India. However, three successive losses thereafter saw them slipping to the fourth position, as they qualified for the semi-finals by virtue of a superior net run-rate. New Zealand will hope for a strong performance from their opener Martin Guptill, who hasn't been able to put up a significant score ever since his team's opening game against Sri Lanka.

Recent form and team combinations suggest India are hot favourites. However, New Zealand, led by a shrewd captain in Williamson, is capable of producing a clinical performance against any opposition on any given day.

    Key Players

Virat Kohli (India): The Indian captain has been a consistent performer in this World Cup, having scored 442 runs in eight innings so far. However, he's yet to register a three-figure score in the tournament. A high pressure game such as a World Cup semi-final, presents a perfect opportunity for Kohli to put up another match-winning performance for India.

Trent Boult (New Zealand): Much like he did in the 2015 edition, Trent Boult has been leading the New Zealand bowling attack with 15 wickets from eight games. Boult, who had powered his team to a six-wicket win with figures of 4/33 in the warm-up game against India, will look to produce a similar performance to put his team in a commanding position.

    Conditions

Skies are likely to remain cloudy throughout the day, with chances of some odd light showers. Teams batting first have won each of the five games played at Old Trafford in this tournament and considering the nature of the contest, both captains will look to bat first.

    Squads

India: Virat Kohli (c), Jasprit Bumrah, Yuzvendra Chahal, MS Dhoni (wk), Ravindra Jadeja, Kedar Jadhav, Dinesh Karthik, Hardik Pandya, Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, Mohammed Shami, Mayank Agarwal, Rohit Sharma, Kuldeep Yadav

New Zealand: Kane Williamson (c), Ross Taylor, Tom Latham (wk), Tom Blundell (wk), Mitchell Santner, Colin de Grandhomme, Lockie Ferguson, Tim Southee, Trent Boult, Colin Munro, Ish Sodhi, Henry Nicholls, Martin Guptill, Matt Henry, Jimmy Neesham

    India v New Zealand

    • There have been seven completed matches between India and New Zealand at the
ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup; the Black Caps have won four times to the three
victories recorded by India in the tournament.
    • India have registered six victories in their last seven completed men’s ODI fixtures with
New Zealand (L1); these sides are set to play each other for the first time at ICC
Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019 after their scheduled group game was abandoned
    without a ball bowled.
    • New Zealand have reached the semi-final stage of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup
for the fourth time in succession; they have never managed to win the tournament
    however.
    • Only Australia (five times) have managed to lift the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup
more often than India; the men in blue have won this competition on two occasions
    (1983 & 2011).
    • India tasted defeat on fewer occasions than any other side during the ICC Men’s
Cricket World Cup 2019 group stage (once, v England); New Zealand head into this
contest having lost each of their last three fixtures.
    • India and New Zealand have met once before at Old Trafford in men’s ODI cricket;
the Black Caps seeing off India by a margin of four wickets at the Manchester venue
in 1975, in that year’s edition of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.
    • Rohit Sharma (India, 647 runs) requires just 27 to set a new record for the most runs
scored in a single ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup campaign; Sachin Tendulkar
currently heads that list (673 in 2003).
    • Rohit Sharma (India) has hit three ODI centuries on the spin heading into this match;
only one man has ever managed to register four in succession in this format (Kumar
Sangakkara – four times in 2015).
    • Rohit Sharma became the first batsman to post five centuries at a single edition of
the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup after recording 103 last time out versus Sri Lanka.
    • New Zealand’s Kane Williamson has scored more runs from cut shots and steers to
third man (125) than any other batsman at ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019; he
posted his highest ever ODI score when he last played at Old Trafford (148 v West
    Indies, 22 June 2019).

Sure...no doubt about it. India 5 vs NZ 45. India is heavily underdog today. It will be a massive upset I reckon , if India wins today.

NZ have been trolling pakistan throughout this wc!

We needed them to LOSE against SA, they won narrowly!

We needed them to LOSE against WI, they won , in heartbreaking fashion with braithwaite's catch!

We needed them WIN against england, they lost!

If only ONE of these games went the way we wanted, pak would have qualified for the semis!

On top of that, NZ trolled us again by getting a point for a washout match against india!

I want NZ to WIN against india, but i expect they will troll us again!

All depends on Boult. He can make this a one side game. He can ran through our lineup in the powerplay . If India can bat without losing a wicket in the 1st powerplay they will win it.

Exactly. The first 10-15 overs will decide the game. It could be totally one sided if Rohit and Kohli goes out early.

Though sharma and kohli are the main batsman for india, kl rahul, pandya and pant have been pretty decent!
Dhoni should play the anchor if sharma and kohli get out early, and let the young guns rahul, pant and pandya go crazy!!
(Rahul has to play more freely and not be so timid, he has all the shots in the book!)

We were expected to lose that one, Aussies were playing at a ridiculously high level then and went unbeaten. 1996 SF too was against a rampant Lankan team who had also thrashed us in the group match. Other knockout that we lost, the 2015 SF we were underdogs.

1987 SF we were co-favorites (alongside Pakistan), had the wood over England for a few years, final was in Eden Gardens and we were defending champions backing it up with World Championship of Cricket title in 1985. My dad till today tells me that was the most painful defeat.

I still don't have belief in rahul. Never seen him bat well during pressure situations. Pandya, pant won't play freely if there is a difficult situation. Dhoni surely can bat but not good enough to take the team to a match winning total. They should have played mayank in the sl game. Rohit, Kohli just have to bat well in the last 2 innings like they did in the whole tournament or from last 2 yrs to be precise.

I have seen glimpses of brilliance in rahul's batting, just needs to believe in himself. Handling pressure is the difference between a world class player and an ordinary player, some people can handle it(kohli) and some can't(umar akmal), lets see how rahul does!
Mayank, i recall played brilliant in the aussie away test series, don't know what he is like in odis!
Pandya and pant remind me of fakhar, these guys only know how to bat one way and if its their day, their team will most likely win.
Dhoni can still play an anchors role, but long gone are his maverick days, when he was the destroyer of teams!!

India vs New Zealand | Semi Final 1, World Cup | Old Trafford | 9th Jul, 2019 | Match Thread

I think that it´ll be best to lose the toss, given the overhead conditions. Captains may not have the best idea as to whether to bat or to bowl first. Winning the toss and then if you end up losing the match, the blame game will take great heights, especially in India´s case.

I always get amused when Pak fans say "Just dismiss Kohli and Sharma early", as if this is a new concept that they alone were able to conceive. Let me tell you Captain obvious, the other teams know about it. Each team have tried to do it, but hasn't happened.

    No problem bro!
I have trolled the indian fans a little since their loss to england, but that was out of frustration of what happened to the pak team. End of the day, as sad as it is for me, a combination of bad luck and bad management cost pak a chance of this world cup, no one elses fault!
So lets hope luck plays no part in who wins this wc and may the best team win, yes even if that means india, though this would be a nightmare for me, but the best team should win the greatest prize in cricket!!

On my way to work, near old trafford, bumped into the official bus possibly carrying Indian/or/New Zealand players to the Stadium.

Not expecting us to win, so this wont hurt.

All I can do is hope for something special from the players, because we're going to need it to beat India.

You won't, we have picked just 5 bowlers and dropped the wicket taking seamer. Dhoni's teammate being picked ahead of kuldeep, long live nepotism.

Add Guptill to the list, we need him to lay a platform and take pressure off the others.

Anything less than 270 and you can call it an Indian win.

In defence of this selection, Shami is quite a liability in the death overs. In a KO, you don't want to have the opposition at 180 in 40 overs and them let them get to 270 just because of poor death bowling

And Bhuvi was actually looking good and picking wickets before he got injured in the match against Pakistan.

We always make these dumb decisions in the knock outs. In CT 2017 also Umesh bowled well against Pakistan in a group game but we didn't play him in the final. A bowler who was taking wickets left, right and center was dropped for a bowler like Bhuvi who has no interest in taking wickets. Lol.

He was poor at death though, I would still pick him ahead of bhuvi but he was bowling atleast 3-4 full tosses every over at death against England .
