Was it the right decision to remove Azhar Mahmood as bowling coach for Pakistan?

He was credited with Pakistan's good performances in the Champions Trophy but then he must take the fall for some of the worst ones also since that time.

Should he have been allowed more time to improve our bowlers?

I think if they got rid of Mickeys then it's only fair that the rest of them left too. I'm most upset about how Hasan Ali regressed under him after peaking in the CT to be the best in that tournament. I know it's not all down to the bowling coach but I'm sure he does have some responsibility in his decline

    Absolutely.
We are just not the fast bowling unit under him which we have been widely acclaimed for.And while the bowlers are to blame too for the trash they have been dishing out in the name of fast bowling, a capable coach would have ensured that his bowlers follow his plans down to the tee or risk being dropped.

You should never have a medium pacer teaching fast bowlers.

This was the easiest of the 4 decisions I should think.

Pakistani bowlers have consistently underperformed for last couple of years by bowling wrong lengths, fast bowlers cutting down on speed and menace, spinners over bowled (and what does he know about spinners anyway?), generally defensive lines from everyone and an utter lack of wickets.

This is not to say Pakistan has great bowlers, just that whatever Pakistan has, Azhar has sent them backward.

    Best decision in decades.

Azhar Mahmood was height of mediocrity.

Absolutely. Azhar was a mediocre bowler himself and his mediocrity was shining on to the current bowlers as well. Never have I seen a Pakistani bowling attack so insipid as I have done in the last two years. And sure the bowlers have to take some of the blame, but the biggest portion of the blame lies firmly on the coachís shoulders. Azhar ruined our bowling and Iím glad he is gone.

Yes. I think he would do better job working with bowlers before the reach international cricket. He can teach the fundamentals, but can’t take them to the next level.

Being a mediocre player doesn't mean that you can't be a good coach; a bowler should be "coached" well before entering the international cricket. From what I have seen and observed, I don't think bowlers executed the plans mostly. I have read numerous times about pitching the ball up by Azhar, but I have rarely seen bowlers do that. It is not coach's fault when you have bunch of mediocre players who do not want to work hard and do not have the hunger to be a better player.

Somehow under him, the whole bowling turned into T20 specialist which he was in the end.

It was always a rarity to see an all rounder as bowling coach of a national team and especially for team like Pakistan which is known for its pace bowling. Pakistan deserves a better coach who either has proven credentials or is atleast a big name who can inspire youngsters by sharing his experiences and motivating them.

Unfortunately Azhar didnt fit in both the criteria.

    Right decision.

Pak should look to rope in Shane Bond as the bowling coach and Michael Bevan as the batting coach.

I thought he was quite decent. Pakistani bowlers were pretty threatening in the World Cup. Batting let Pakistan down.

Mahmood: Arthur would be a great choice for England job

Azhar Mahmood says Mickey Arthur would be a great choice to succeed England head coach Trevor Bayliss.

Arthur is seeking a new challenge after it was announced on Wednesday that he will not stay on as Pakistan head coach.

Bowling coach Mahmood, batting coach Grant Flower and trainer Grant Luden also departed this week after their contracts expired.

The vastly experienced Arthur is reportedly a contender to replace Bayliss when the Ashes series against Australia ends next month.

Mahmood believes Arthur could be a resounding success if he lands the job and the former Pakistan all-rounder - who lives in England - would relish the opportunity to work with the South African again.

He told Omnisport: "Mickey has served South Africa, he's served Australia. He's been around for a while, so why not, I think he would do a great job

"I'd love to work with Mickey, we had a great relationship and if he becomes head coach and I had the opportunity to stay and work in England, you can't ask for anything more than that."

Mahmood added: "Mickey is very passionate, very emotional. He does things with his heart 100 per cent, whatever he does. I had a great time working with him, I learned a lot from him and I think he was the right man for Pakistan.

"Unfortunately, according to the pundits, we didn't produce, but there are issues with the fitness culture of players in Pakistan, there are a lot of unfit players. Our fielding, batting and bowling improved. People have to be given time, you can't produce overnight.

"Throughout the period they [the Pakistan Cricket Board] never decided on a captain full-time, that was a problem."

Mahmood said he is open to opportunities in international and domestic cricket.

"I'm looking at my options, it's good to have a little bit of a break but I've already had offers, my phone has been ringing a lot and that was also the case while I was doing the job with Pakistan," he said.

"I have a lot to offer, I played one-day cricket and have been involved in the T20 format all over the world.

"I would love to work in a capacity where I can pass on my huge experience, whether that be in domestic cricket in England so I can spend more time with my family, while also possibly working in tournaments in other countries.

"If an international opportunity comes up, then let's see. I am open to everything right now. People know I am available now so there is a lot of interest, I just need to work out which is best for my future."

Yes. PCB should rope in Waqar as the replacement. Waqar wasn't a great head coach but under him, even mediocre bowlers like Rahat Ali and Wahab Riaz did pretty well.

Mickey should have been retained, he has gradually removed negativity and is gradually getting rid off players not worthy to wear the Pakistan shirt. We have a fitter younger team.

I hope Waqar is not made coach again...great player but let a lot happen under his nose, whilst innocent fans watched on....even Broad scored a 160+ under him. He could have told his bowlers bouncer bouncer Yorker.....

I dont think he was given a fair hearing by the PCB and matters considered properly when removing him. Only time will tell how the next coach will magically transform Pakistan's bowling resources.

I think Azhar tried his best, no doubt about that. Just a different kind of spark is probably needed for our bowlers.

Don't think Azhar Mahmood was a successful bowling coach, but have to credit him for Shaheen Afridi's fantastic international career so far.
