Pakistan announce 15-member squad for ACC U19 Asia Cup 2019 (September 5-14)

    https://www.pcb.com.pk/press-release...-asia-cup.html

Lahore, 7 August 2019: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Wednesday announced a 15-member line-up for the ACC U19 Asia Cup, which will run from 5 to 14 September in Sri Lanka.

Pakistan will enter the tournament at the back of a remarkable run – 10 wins in last 12 matches – after defeating Sri Lanka (3-2) and South Africa (7-0) in their backyards.

Wicketkeeper-batsmen Rohail Nazir has been retained as the side, while Haider Ali will perform the task of his deputy.

Considering the conditions in Sri Lanka, the junior selection committee, under the chairmanship of Saleem Jaffar, has made two changes in the side that toured South Africa.

Shiraz Khan, right-arm fast-bowler, and Saim Ayub, left-handed top-order batsman, have been replaced by opening batsman Abdul Wahid Bangalzai and Abu Huraira, a right-arm off-spinner from Dera Murad Jamali.

Chairman, Junior Selection Committee Saleem Jaffar said: “After accessing conditions in Sri Lanka, we have made two changes in the side from the one that toured South Africa.

“The thought process behind this selection focuses on the preparation of players for the next year’s junior world cup and the desired grooming required for becoming a part of Pakistan’s senior side in the future.

“Victories in Sri Lanka and South Africa have uplifted the confidence of our boys. Their fitness level and morale is on the high. And, this makes us confidence of success in the Asia Cup.”

The other seven teams participating in the tournament are the hosts Sri Lanka, India, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, UAE, Nepal and Kuwait.

The 15 selected players are as follows:

Rohail Nazir (Islamabad) (captain, wicketkeeper), Haider Ali (Rawalpindi) (vice-captain), Aamir Ali (Larkana), Abu Huraira (DM Jamali), Adul Wahid Bangalzai (Quetta), Akhtar Shah (Quetta), Fahad Munir (Lahore), Mohammad Aamir (Peshawar), Mohammad Abbas Afridi (FATA), Mohammad Basit Ali (Multan), Mohammad Haris (Peshawar), Mohammad Irfan Khan (Faisalabad), Mohammad Wasim JR (FATA), Naseem Shah (Lahore) and Qasim Akram (Lahore).

    Reserves:

Jahanzaib Sultan (Karachi), Saim Ayub (Karachi), Syed Raza ul Hasan (Hyderabad), Shiraz Khan (Rawalpindi) and Zaman Khan (AJK)

Not a single player playing from Karachi. They have been winning U19 regional tournaments in recent years but not selecting any player from there is shocking.

I'm happy to see a player playing from Dera Murad Jamali, two from Quetta, two from FATA, and 1 from from lower dir and Larkana each. Cricket is expanding in Pakistan, always a good sign.

Years ago it used to be U19 cricketers from big cities only

KARACHI: The recently announced Pakistan U-19 squad for the upcoming Asia Cup has raised many questions over the selection policy and criteria adopted by the Junior Selection Committee headed by former fast bowler Saleem Jaffer as not a single player of Karachi - the biggest cricket nursery in the country - has been selected in the squad.

Karachi teams have dominated the board’s Inter-Regional U-13, U-16, U-19 Championships over the last couple of years and there have been times when both the finalist teams have been from Karachi - Karachi Whites and Karachi Blues which shows the amount of cricket talent available in the metropolis.

But despite that, young players from the biggest city of Pakistan have been constantly neglected which is now becoming a serious issue. The knowledgeable critics have pointed out flaws in the criterion adopted for U-19 team’s selection for the Asia Cup and have criticised the Junior Selection Committee for not assessing the Karachi players on merit prior to finalising the squad.

It must be mentioned here that the PCB has been beating the drums about improving the domestic cricket by bringing professionalism and putting an end to nepotism and favouritsm but the recent selection of Pakistan U-19 team for the Asia Cup has exposed the board’s tall claims of the board. It seems that the PCB has decided to appease certain regions by including their players on quota system while the better performers have been left wondering as to what they shall do to get into the national U-19 side.

If this is how the players of Karachi or any other region would be treated, then it will certainly create an adverse impact on the morale of the players and they would be forced to reconsider their profession and some good players might walk give up cricket. How can a city with population of 25 million cannot have a single player in Pakistan squad? And this is not about the population but more about the performances, the trophies that Karachi has won in last six years in age group cricket which makes the Karachi players’ case very strong for selection in the national team.

PCB Chairman Ehsan Mani and Managing Director Wasim Khan should take notice of this issue and must ensure that justice is done to the players of Karachi because some of the outstanding performers who deserved to be in the Pakistan U19 team for upcoming Asia Cup have been omitted by the selectors at the expense of a few who performed below par but still made the team.

    This regional whining must stop.

The aim is to select the best available cricketers and talent. The aim is NOT to include every region possible, even if it's the biggest or the 2nd biggest one.

If these other guys are better in talent, they deserve to be there ahead of Karachi or Lahore or whatever.

The most sucessful U19 team in recent times is Karachi. Many talented young players are from Karachi-Saud Shakeel, Mir Hamza, Saad Ali, Hasan Mohsin and more

This is Pakistan team not Karachi team. It's obvious that their players were not good enough, hence not getting picked. They picked saim ayub on 2 tours and flopped each time when given opportunity. They always play the victim card so ignore these people.

‘PCB is not ignoring players from Karachi’ Arshad Khan

Pakistan’s former Test cricketer Arshad Khan said that the perception regarding the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) ignoring players from Karachi, is wrong.

While talking to the media at National Stadium Karachi, Khan replied to a question about not selecting any player from Karachi in Pakistan U19 squad for ACC Under-19 Youth Asia Cup and said that the selectors give priority to best combinations.

“I don’t think so that any player has been ignored. It is a wrong perception that players from Karachi are getting ignored. We always give chances to the talented players,” he told the media on the sidelines of Sindh region trials conducted by the PCB.

Khan, who is the chief selector of Sindh region trials, thinks that Karachi is the nursery of cricket and players get highlighted by this city.

“See, players from across Sindh have reached to Karachi prove their mettle. I have personally noticed very talented players who can become a strong prospect for Pakistan in the future,” he said.

Former off-spinner found the talented off-spinner during the first day of trial and is hopefull to send the names of at least two quality spinners to the board. “I have observed a couple of good spinners here and I am hoping a little bit of grooming will make them strong for future,” Khan said.

On the other hand, the selector highlighted that lack of quality fast bowlers is the main concern for them. “So far, I haven’t seen any fast bowler in the trials who can go further to represent the region,” he stated.

A total of 80 players will attend the two days trial during which they will go through different practice sessions to prove their strength.

Earlier, PCB announced the schedule of trials in six regions according to their new domestic structure. After completion of trials, two teams from six regions, comprised of 16 players each, will be made.
