India [279/7] beat West Indies [210] by 59 runs (D/L) in the 2nd ODI, lead series 1-0

Since January 2016, the Indian top three of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan have scored 1449 one-day international runs against West Indies at an average of 79.63. They will be looking to press this advantage against the hosts in the second ODI at Trinidad.

    Overview

West Indies v India, 2nd ODI
Queen's Park Oval, Port of Spain, Trinidad
    11 August, 9:30am local time, 1:30pm GMT

Having swept the Twenty20 International series with a 3-0 margin, India looked ready to take that form into 50-over cricket in the first ODI at Guyana. However, the game was washed out with West Indies on 54/1 in 13 overs. This is now a must-win for both sides, since it will give the winning team a vital 1-0 lead going into the final game.

West Indies, who have failed to win a game in the series so far, will hope to get a positive result in this ODI. They have incurred six ODI losses in last seven games at the Queen's Park Oval, four of which have come against India. Jason Holder and his team will be keen to improve that record on Sunday. While Chris Gayle struggled in the first ODI Ė he was dismissed for a 31-ball 4 Ė he will have extra motivation going into this game: the left-hander is just seven runs away from displacing Brian Lara as West Indies' top run-scorer in ODI cricket.

For India, skipper Kohli, who has scored the most runs against West Indies since January 2012 Ė 1332 at 78.35 Ė will be key for the visitors. Kuldeep Yadav, who claimed Gayle's wicket in the first game, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, the highest visiting wicket-taker at Port of Spain, will be expected to spearhead the bowling attack.

    Remember the last time

While the first ODI was washed out, these two sides locked horns in the format recently in a robin-round clash at the 2019 World Cup. It was a comprehensive 125-run win for India that saw Kohli and MS Dhoni score fifties, before Mohammed Shami claimed a four-wicket haul to skittle West Indies out for 143.

Jason Holder (captain, West Indies): "Our openers needed to spend some time in the middle [in the first ODI]. Hopefully, the weather stays good and we get to play some cricket. But we need to stay consistent and if we can get that, it can bring in good habits for people. "

Virat Kohli (captain, India): "A few of the pitches in the Caribbean can really test you. Some pitches might have good pace and bounce but some of them will be on the slower side and you need to be patient. The team that adapts well and plays better percentage of cricket will benefit. Both teams will look to do that in the coming days."

    Conditions

The forecast predicts cloudy conditions in the first half of play, which may assist the team that bowls first. However, the captains might be tempted to bat first since teams defending a total have won four out of the last six games played at this venue. A score of 300 has been crossed just twice at this ground in the last decade, both times by India.

He thinks people are doubting him as a player which is or never was the case. His ego is too big too admit that people don’t doubt his playing ability but it’s his captaincy that is crap and he just doesn’t wanna let it go by scoring runs against these club level cricketers as well. He should honestly put his ego aside and let rohit be the odi captain the records are there to see for everyone rohit is a way better odi captain than kohli by far

Pant 20 from 35 balls? And he is playing at 4? Not even Dhoni who is an ODI GOAT used to play there. This is Shubhman Gill's position. He should be included in the team asap and overrated Pant should bat at 7. His tullaybaazi might work there in 2 out of 10 innings.

He won't give up captaincy. That means admitting he sucked with captaincy. Rohit has already won 4 IPLs in 6 stints as captain. Kohli 6 or 7 seasons zero titles. KOhli's captaincy will make sure India will continue underachieving. Also under Kohli older players felt safer than youngsters. So there is no long term plan under Kohli. They title "India continues to search for 4" in today's cricinfo title sums up how clueless he is. They started their no.4 search 3 years back. Now world cup is over. They are still in search of it.

Lol I told some indian posters here after that t20 60 he won’t score for another 4 innings but they didn’t beleive me it’s been one already. He’s a Tulla which will fire once in a while. And wow look at Shreyas iyer what a player he is and he’s never even been in the talks of Indian team. I feel bad for guys from Kerala area stuff in India like Samson as well they deserve a chance way ahead of pant pandya kedar

You are right. Pandya and Pant can perform in 2 out of 10 innings which any player can do if he is given the same amount of opportunities and confidence by the team management.

Guys like Iyer, Pandey, Shankar will get limited chances to prove themselves. But guys like Pant who scored two hundreds in test cricket will get unlimited opportunities in LOI's on the basis of those performances. VVS Laxman played in the wrong era it seems.

There is no point explaining it to their fans because they will call you jealous, Dhoni fan and what not in order to defend them.

Its good that people like you are not managing bcci.
Have you ever seen the career graph of yuvraj singh, was he consistent? No he wasn't but then why did he get so many chances bcoz dada knew that he had the talent, similarly pant will get many chances and he will surely come out with flying colors.

Pant should be batting at 5. He is an aggressive batsmen and can be our Yuvraj Singh. Bat him at 5 and he will produce great results at that position. Anyways, a 22 year old is bound to fail more than perform, that's how you gain experience.

Gill and Iyer should be in contention for no.4 spot. They are more suited for that position. But even Gill will also fail more than perform during his early days.

Itís not about giving Chances itís about availing them and even if you give chances those chances should be given to guys like Samson who have been around before pant itís about being fair which bcci clearly isnít. Now you are saying that but Iím pretty sure you hate bcci and the way its run right now and the people it is run by.

despite his way off record in WC KOs, Kohli proving as to why he is such a great LOI batsman. It was his 2 master ful chasing 100s each, that played very crucial parts to enable IND win bilaterals in SAF & AUS for the first time .

On a side note , I think Pant is most suited for opening slot. His match temperament is more suited to tests where he can take his own time and then cut loose later. With field restrictions at the start, he can give '30 ball 40 cameos' at the top. I doubt he is a NO:4 material in ODIs.

7 away from tying Tendulkar's record for most ODI centuries.

    Unbelievable batsman.

And Kohli's back again with a century in a useless JAMODI, only so he can start on another streak of scoring 20 centuries over the next 4 years and then failing again in a KO.

You probably did not see much Indian cricket then, hence came up with this. Yuvaraj literally contributed in all 3 disciplines, which was a great value proposition. He and Kaif had an immediate upliftment on the Indian fielding. Comparing Pant and Yuvaraj clearly is broad generalization.

Pant does not yet have the mentality to build an ODI innings. His balance is not right and he is only about hoicks at this point. This is not to say that he won't be successful in future but you can't have a conclusion that he will be a legend. He and Pandya should bat at 6 & 7. Gill and Iyer should be given chance in the middle instead.

Another hundred from Kohli. It seems the guy will probably end up with over 60 hundreds, even 70 for that matter because like most Indians, he will play till 37-38 as well.

Regarding India's batting order, Iyer is more suited to no.4 while Pant is a better fit for 5.

At no.4, we need someone who can average 45@SR 85 while at 5 or 6, someone who averages 40@SR 95.

Pant is a better fit for the second one. Anyways, they can experiment whatever they want now. It's fine.
