Liverpool 25 points ahead in the premier league losing to a team that is 6th in LA Liga. It just shows you how overrated the premier league is.

The PL is so weak this season, the weakest it has been since I started watching football in the late 90s. Liverpool have played so many games this season, where they have been very average, yet they have won practically every single game, thanks to the poor standards of the PL teams. My club Man United had their worst ever start to the PL season and yet we can still finish in the top 4. That sums up the lack of quality of the PL.

Honestly thought Liverpool would win tonight. They've lost to an ordinary Atletico side. Atletico weren't any threat going forward during the 90 mins and they managed to concede 3 goals to them in extra time. That's a bit embarrassing.

Although it was quite funny to watch in the end.

Yeah league positions don't matter when some European team eliminates a Premier League side. But when Premier League sides eliminates European sides, all you Premier League ******* are like "PL is the best league in the world" and "other league are farmers leagues."

Liverpool’s players have run out of gas. Luckily enough they have the league secured already, otherwise they could have found a way to surrender a 10 point lead to City again.

The “heavy metal” football of Klopp doesn’t come with a price. With the AFCON next season and Mane and Salah leaving for two months, Liverpool will go all out of Werner this summer, and then Klopp fans will remind us that he doesn’t need to spend money and will point to the net spend.

    100%

We dominated AM, their keeper kept them in the game making 10 or so saves. Our keeper made a mistake and we are out.

The boys played well, no issues from LFC fans.

We have a trophy coming our way soon, bigger than CL for us.

Liverpool versus Atletico Madrid - it was a clash of styles, a clash of systems and a clash of attitudes for how the game should be played.

But amid these wider, contrasting ideas on football, practised by managers Jurgen Klopp and Diego Simeone, it was the individual performances of the two goalkeepers at Anfield on Wednesday night which had a huge impact on the outcome.

At one end, Atletico's Jan Oblak underlined his reputation as one of the world's premier shot-stoppers. At the other, Adrian simply highlighted how much Liverpool miss Alisson when he's not there.

Yes, Oblak was beaten by Gini Wijnaldum's first-half header and he could do little to keep out Roberto Firmino's close-range follow-up finish in extra-time. But he also made nine saves on the night.

There was the full-length stop to push away Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's drive across the greasy, rain-soaked surface. There were the point-blank reaction saves to deny Wijnaldum and Firmino. And there was the agile block to keep out a low shot from Sadio Mane.

"Oblak made some great saves," said a rueful Jordan Henderson after the final whistle. He kept Atletico in contention - and in extra-time, they were able to capitalise with the help of a goalkeeping error from Adrian.

Just 167 seconds after Firmino looked to have sent Liverpool into the quarter-finals, Adrian skewed a pass straight to Joao Felix who teed up Marcos Llorente to score from distance. Adrian, who had slipped as he prepared to dive to make the save, could only paw mud off his studs as the Atletico players celebrated wildly with the tie turned on its head.

Liverpool have been badly stung by 'keeper mistakes in this competition before. Those errors from Lauris Karius in the 2018 final won't be forgotten. And perhaps that context encourages the observer to look for further Adrian faults in Atletico's second and third goals.

Was Adrian partially unsighted or poorly positioned for Llorente's second low, long-range strike? Should he have rushed closer towards Alvaro Morata to cut down the angle when he was beaten at his near post for the third?

The extent of Adrian's contribution will be discussed in the days to come - and with injured Alisson out of Monday's Merseyside derby, too, the spotlight will stay on Liverpool's back-up keeper.

But Atletico Madrid - set up to defend in their pragmatic and rigid 4-4-2 by Simeone - didn't have a single shot on target in the first half and only managed six in the whole 120 minutes. Yet they found the net three times.

"We saw all the goals we conceded, we shouldn't concede these kind of goals," Klopp said afterwards. "Any mistake or lapse in concentration can cost you," added Henderson, with his mind clearly on that misplaced pass for Atletico's vital first.

Later, in his press conference, Klopp was insistent in his defence of his goalkeeper. "We don't blame him for a second. He has saved us in so many moments since he has been here. He has had super performances. This goal didn't help but that's how it is.

"It had an impact but it was one goal. We conceded two more goals after that. We didn't score the goals. There were plenty of reasons why we didn't go through."

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp praised his team's performance despite their Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid, but questioned his opponent's playing style.

Indeed, any error from a goalkeeper stands out far more than mistakes made by team-mates further up the pitch. But while Liverpool's finishing could have been more efficient, the quality of their performance against one of the best defensive teams in the world was of the highest level.

And Alisson's absence only adds a feeling of 'what if' to this frustrating exit.

"Liverpool have put an awful lot into that performance and it was a very good performance," said former Liverpool midfielder Neil Mellor on Sky Sports News. "They created chance after chance. Oblak is one of the best goalkeepers in the world, and he showed that tonight.

"The best goalkeeper in the world was missing for Liverpool and they missed him tonight. I think that was the big difference. Liverpool were missing Alisson. If he was in goal, would Liverpool have progressed?"

It is a question which can never be answered and one which might rankle with Liverpool supporters in the weeks to come.

Liverpool's season has come crashing down in the matter of 10 days.

They got knocked out of the FA Cup, lost their unbeaten EPL run to Watford, and now they surrender against Atletico at Anfield.

This will be hard to swallow for Liverpool fans, this team is easily the best team in the world right now, and the fact that they managed to bottle it against a defensive unit like Atletico in extra-time will just add insult to injury.

Well played to Atletico, I honestly thought that they are going to get demolished at Anfield. A special mention to Oblak, definitely the goalkeeper in the world right now, alongside Ter Stegen and Alisson.

    Tough times. @KingKhanWC

Barcelona were not that good last year either. They were getting carried by Messi and Ter Stegen throughout the UCL, and yet, they managed to sneak in the semi-finals, where the unthinkable happened.

With Liverpool gone, they may have a better chance to go all the way this time.

Literally no one has claimed that this is the greatest English team ever.

Man U (1998-1999) (2007-2009) and Liverpool (1978-1979) were far better teams.

The second leg of Manchester City's last-16 second leg Champions League tie against Real Madrid, scheduled for Tuesday 17 March, has been postponed.

The decision, confirmed by Uefa, comes after the Real Madrid squad went into quarantine because of coronavirus.

UEFA are reviewing whether to suspend the Champions League and Europa League due to the coronavirus.

Sky Sports report that senior figures want the competitions to be suspended with the disease beginning to affect a number of the teams involved.

Real Madrid were scheduled to face Manchester City at the Etihad in the second leg of their Champions League last 16 tie on Tuesday, but their first-team squad have been placed in quarantine.

Champions League matches between Sevilla and Roma along with Getafe’s trip to Inter have already been postponed due to the decisions of governments, but UEFA have not yet intervened in ind

This news follows after La Liga confirming that all matches have been suspended while a statement from Real Madrid confirmed the club were in quarantine due to a basketball player contacting the virus.

Reports claim that the government recommendation had initially been to play the games behind closed doors but a host of organisations, including the AFE Spanish players union, wanted them postponed.

Comparing La Liga to Ligue 1 is stretching it a bit too far.

The French league is the perfect synonym of a farmer's league, where one rich club has been dominating the whole system for close to 10 years now. The reason why PSG rarely manage to qualify for the UCL quarter-finals is because they play low-level teams for an entire season, they never get to face the competitive teams they would face in the EPL, La Liga or even Serie A.

After smashing minnows after minnows for an entire season, they suddenly start facing the big boys in the UCL, where they get to face much, much better teams, and they inevitably end up getting eliminated after the R16, because they are not used to play against quality opponents.

The EPL is definitely not at the same level it used to be 10 years ago, but it still remains for me, the best league in the world. They simply have too many big clubs, and, even though some of them have declined massively in terms of quality football, they manage to stay competitive.

A league where you have teams like Liverpool, City, United, Spurs, Chelsea, Arsenal, Leicester is always going to be better than a league where besides Madrid and Barcelona, the rest basically play for the 3rd spot.

I am a Real Madrid fan myself, but the EPL, even after a massive decline in terms of quality in the last 10 years, stays marginally ahead of La Liga, who could become the most competitive league in the world if teams like Atletico, Sevilla and Valencia could give some hard challenges to Real and Barca.

All Uefa competitions, including Champions League and Europa League matches due to be played next week, have been postponed because of the coronavirus outbreak.

The draws for the next rounds, set for 20 March, have also been postponed.

In the Champions League, Manchester City v Real Madrid, Juventus v Lyon, Barcelona v Napoli and Bayern Munich v Chelsea are all postponed.

Manchester United, Wolves and Rangers' matches in the Europa League are off.

How coronavirus has impacted global sport
All Uefa Youth League quarter-final matches scheduled for 17 and 18 March are also off.

Uefa said further decisions on the scheduling of the postponed fixtures "will be communicated in due course".

European football's governing body has invited representatives from all 55 of its member associations to a meeting on Tuesday in order to discuss a response to the coronavirus outbreak.

The scheduling of Euro 2020 will be discussed at the gathering.

More than 125,000 people have been diagnosed with coronavirus in 118 countries around the world, according to the World Health Organization. The total number of deaths is more than 4,600.

    The matches postponed (17-19 March)
    Champions League (aggregate score)
    Bayern Munich v Chelsea (3-0)
    Barcelona v Napoli (1-1)
Man City v Real Madrid (2-1)
    Juventus v Lyon (0-1)
    Europa League (aggregate score)
    Bayer Leverkusen v Rangers (3-1)
    Getafe v Inter Milan
    Shakhtar Donetsk v Wolfsburg (2-1)
    Wolves v Olympiakos (1-1)
FC Basel v Eintracht Frankfurt (3-0)
FC Copenhagen v Istanbul Basaksehir (0-1)
    Manchester United v LASK (5-0)
    Roma v Sevilla

A mini-tournament to decide the Champions League and Europa League will be one option put forward to ease fixture congestion caused by the coronavirus outbreak.

European football's governing body, Uefa, is hosting a video conference with major stakeholders on Tuesday.

Euro 2020 is set to be postponed to allow league seasons to be completed.

A source close to the situation says all parties must be ready to sacrifice something to reach a solution.

All 55 Uefa members, the boards of the European Club Association and the European Leagues, and a representative of world players' union Fifpro have been invited to Tuesday's meeting.

The Uefa members will also hold an additional meeting to discuss their own reaction.

    How would a mini-tournament work?
As with the Premier League, who on Friday stressed their commitment to completing the season, Uefa wants the Champions League and Europa League to reach a conclusion because they also have major broadcasting contracts to satisfy.

Both tournaments are at their last-16 stage, with six matchdays remaining, including the final. There are still 14 last-16 ties across the two competitions to be completed.

Playing the quarter-finals and semi-finals as one-off games would cut two fixtures off the remaining schedule.

Playing them over a handful of days as a mini-tournament - in Istanbul and Gdansk, host cities for this season's finals - would concentrate the matches even further, cutting down on travelling and cause the least disruption to the domestic leagues.

It has not been ruled out these games could be played in conjunction with league matches - nor does the Champions League final have to mark the end of the club campaign as tradition dictates.

Moving Euro 2020, due to take place at venues across Europe from 12 June to 12 July, to next summer would also free up more time to complete domestic and European fixtures.

However, that would then impact on next year's calendar.

Both the Women's European Championship, hosted by England, and the men's European Under-21 Championship, in Hungary and Slovenia, are scheduled for the summer of 2021. The Nations League, the draw for which was held earlier in March, is due to be completed next spring.

In addition, the first edition of the expanded Fifa Club World Cup is set to be held in China in June.

While the big domestic leagues have problems over television contracts to solve if games do not take place, most countries rely on the payments from Uefa that come out of major international tournaments to allow their own leagues to function properly. These would be at risk from any movement of the European Championship and are likely to form part of any agreement.

Uefa has an estimated 400 staff working on the Euros. It is unknown what will happen to them if the tournament does not take place for another 12 months.

The situation is not made any easier by not knowing when football will be able to resume.

Uefa accepts it is impossible to know when current travel restrictions will be lifted, but it cannot wait until they are to draft a plan.

The first of today’s meetings to work out the next steps for European football has concluded.

Representatives of Uefa, the European Clubs’ Association, the European Leagues and world players’ union Fifpro met by video conference, starting at 0900 GMT.

There has been no official word from the meeting but it is widely assumed a proposal to delay Euro 2020 has been made.

All 55 members of UEFA, including the Football Association, will discuss the plan, with any decision on Euro 2020 being made after that by the organisation’s executive committee.

Euro 2020 postponed until next summer, says the Norwegian FA

Euro 2020 has been postponed by one year until 2021 because of the coronavirus pandemic, says the Norwegian FA.

Uefa, European football's governing body, is holding an emergency video conference involving major stakeholders on Tuesday.

The Norwegian FA says it was decided that the tournament will now take place from 11 June to 11 July next year.

BBC Sport understands the decision will be signed off by Uefa later on Tuesday.

The tournament was due to take place from 12 June-12 July this year at 12 venues across Europe.

The postponement provides a chance for European leagues that have been suspended to now be completed.

Champions League final: Uefa plans for final on 29 August

Uefa is working to plans that would see the Champions League final end the 2019-20 season on 29 August.

European football's governing body will meet on 23 April for more discussions about how to complete a campaign which has been disrupted by coronavirus.

It is likely one decision will be to agree that leagues could finish early, although only with Uefa's approval.

But the idea is still to finish the season as a whole at the end of August, with all outstanding games played.

That would mean the Champions League final taking place in Istanbul on 29 August, with the Europa League final in Gdansk three days earlier.

Two scenarios for getting to that situation are under consideration.

The first is to play the quarter-finals and semi-finals as two-legged matches as normal, in July and August.

The second would be for the games to be played as one-off fixtures after the end of the domestic seasons, potentially condensing the end of the competition into a week-long mini tournament.

Four of the eight Champions League quarter-finalists are already known, with Manchester City's high-profile encounter with Real Madrid one of the ties still to be concluded.

In the Europa League, scheduling is more complicated because all eight last-16 second-leg ties are still to be played, with two matches, involving Spanish and Italian teams, yet to play the first legs.

Uefa has a plan to finish the 2019-20 season by August, including the Champions League and Europa League campaigns, according to the governing body’s president, Aleksander Ceferin.

The majority of European league seasons were suspended in March due to the Covid-19 pandemic but a few leagues have announced plans for a restart in the coming weeks.

The French and Dutch top-flight campaigns have been cancelled but the German Bundesliga restarted on Saturday and Ceferin expects at least 80% of national leagues to finish their seasons.

“We have an idea but we have to wait for the executive committee of Uefa to confirm the dates. I can say that the European season will be finished, if everything is as it is now, in August,” Ceferin told beIN Sports.

“As things look now, I’m sure that we can finish the European season and this means Uefa competition. I think the majority of leagues will finish the season. The ones who will not, it’s their decision. But they will still have to play qualifiers if they want to participate in the European Uefa competition.”

The Champions League and Europa League are yet to complete their last-16 matches. Paris Saint-Germain, who were declared Ligue 1 champions, are looking to play their Champions League games abroad after the French government said professional sports would not be allowed to return before September.

“Paris Saint-Germain and Lyon will have to organise [matches] in France,” Ceferin added. “If this is not possible, [they] will have to organise it at a neutral ground.

“If you cannot play in your country, then you have to organise it at a neutral ground. I don’t see the reason why French authorities would not allow them to organise a match without spectators, but let’s see. It’s out of my power.”

Euro 2020, scheduled to be hosted in 12 cities across Europe, has been postponed until next year.

“We’ve had conversations with nine cities and everything is set,” Ceferin said. “With three cities, we have some issues. So we will discuss further. In principle, we will do it in 12 cities but if not, we are ready to do it in 10, nine or eight.”

Manchester City's Champions League last-16 second leg against Real Madrid will be played at Etihad Stadium.

Governing body Uefa has confirmed all outstanding second-leg ties in the Champions League and Europa League will be held at the home teams' stadiums behind closed doors.

City host Real on either 7 or 8 August, while Chelsea face Bayern Munich away.

In the Europa League, Wolves will host Olympiakos and Manchester United will welcome LASK on 5 or 6 August.

Both competitions were suspended in March because of the coronavirus pandemic, after the majority of first legs had been played.

City lead Real 2-1 after the first leg, Chelsea are 3-0 down to Bayern, Manchester United are 5-0 up on LASK and Wolves are level at 1-1 having scored an away goal in Greece. Rangers will travel to Germany 3-1 down on Bayer Leverkusen.

Inter Milan against Getafe and Sevilla against Roma will both be played as single-leg ties in Germany after the coronavirus situation in Italy and Spain in March resulted in both first legs being called off.

Uefa also confirmed that the 'final eight' tournaments for both competitions will be held without spectators present.

The Champions League quarter-finals, semi-finals and final will all be held in Lisbon from 12 to 23 August.

The last three rounds of the Europa League will be held in cities across Germany, with the final in Cologne on 21 August, having been moved from Gdasnk in Poland.

The draw for both tournaments takes place from 11:00 BST on Friday.

The Women's Champions League will also be a knockout tournament, in northern Spain between 21 to 30 August.

(Reuters) - European soccer’s governing body says it is confident Real Madrid’s Champions League clash with Manchester City will go ahead as planned next week despite one of the Spanish side’s players testing positive for COVID-19.

Real confirmed on Tuesday that forward Mariano Diaz had tested positive, casting doubt on his participation in the Aug. 8 tie at the Etihad Stadium.

“UEFA is in contact with the club and monitoring both the situation and decisions of the relevant Spanish authorities,” UEFA said in a statement to British media.

“We are confident that this case will not affect the regular staging of the match in question.”

Real trail Manchester City 2-1 from the first leg of their last-16 tie before the competition was suspended in March.

Spain has seen a surge in COVID-19 positives with thousands of new cases reported on a daily basis in the past week, taking its tally up to over 298,000 cases.

Manchester City reached the Champions League quarter-finals after knocking out record 13-time winners Real Madrid.

Leading 2-1 from the first leg, City extended their aggregate lead through Raheem Sterling's close-range finish after Raphael Varane's mistake.

Karim Benzema equalised on the night with a header but Brazil forward Gabriel Jesus made it 4-2 on aggregate after another shocking error by Varane.

City will play Lyon in a one-off quarter-final tie on 15 August.

It is the third successive season Pep Guardiola's side, who finished second in the Premier League table, have reached the last eight in Europe's premier club knockout competition.

City, seeking to win the Champions League for the first time, have not reached the semi-finals since 2015-16, when they were knocked out by Real Madrid.

Juventus losing to a team who has played like 1 decent level match since March is embarrassing.

Lyon looked gassed after half time and the scoreline ended up flattering Juve, they were gifted a penalty.

lol all those years when you Ronaldo fan boys went on about him, truth is its a team sport and you need your teammates to step up like they did at Madrid. Ronaldo ghosted 3 CL finals and has still gone on to win 5 titles because his teammates stepped up.

The luckiest player the sport has ever seen. Even in internationals, he went off and Portugal went on to win without him and he got all the glory. That friendly cup, again he ghosted and his teammates won the title for him.

Juventus have appointed Andrea Pirlo as manager to replace the sacked Maurizio Sarri, a week after hiring the former midfielder as Under-23 boss.

The Italian giants sacked Sarri after just one season despite winning Serie A following the club's Champions League last-16 defeat by Lyon on Friday.

Pirlo, 41, has signed a two-year deal until June 2022.

The former Italy midfielder was only named the club's Under-23 manager on 30 July.

Juventus said the decision to promote him is "based on the belief that Pirlo has what it takes to lead from his debut on the bench, an expert and talented squad to pursue new success".

Pirlo played 164 games for Juventus between 2011 and 2015 and won four Serie A titles in Turin after joining from AC Milan, with whom he spent most of his career and won two Champions League and two league titles.

Pirlo, who won 116 caps for Italy and helped them to win the 2006 World Cup, retired in 2017 having spent two years in Major League Soccer at New York City FC after leaving Juventus.

After he was appointed Under-23 boss, Pirlo said he would like to have the same "journey" as Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola and Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane.

Guardiola and Zidane coached Barcelona and Real Madrid's reserve teams respectively before taking on the main job.

"But you need to earn it, gaining experience," said Pirlo.

"The path I'm about to embark on is the right one for me."

Pirlo played at Juventus alongside goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, who at 42 is older than his new boss.

Italian Sarri, 61, was appointed on a three-year contract last summer after one year at Premier League club Chelsea.

He guided Juventus to a ninth straight Serie A title, although they lost three of their last four league matches to finish only a point clear of Inter Milan.

They were also beaten by Napoli in the Coppa Italia final after football in the country restarted following the coronavirus shutdown.

The line-up for the Champions League 'final eight' tournament in Lisbon is complete after wins for Barcelona and Bayern Munich on Saturday.

Manchester City are the only Premier League side left in the competition and they play Lyon on Saturday, 15 August.

The opening game of the round sees Atalanta take on Paris St-Germain, before RB Leipzig face Atletico Madrid the following day.

Barcelona and Bayern Munich meet for a place in the semi-finals next Friday.

The remainder of the Champions League is being played in a single-leg format, with all games taking place in the Portuguese capital of Lisbon.

It all culminates with the final on 23 August.

Istanbul, originally appointed to stage the 2020 final, will now host the 2021 final.
