Manchester United needed an extra-time penalty from Bruno Fernandes to finally see off a spirited FC Copenhagen and set up a potential Europa League semi-final against Wolves.

United were poor for much of the first half in the heat of Cologne but still had a penalty overturned and a goal ruled out by the Video Assistant Referee.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side improved and dominated the second half but could find no way past inspired goalkeeper Karl-Johan Johnsson, with Fernandes and Mason Greenwood also each hitting the post and Marcus Rashford having another effort disallowed.

Fernandes finally broke through in familiar style, keeping cool to drive in United's 21st spot-kick of the season at the start of the extra period to extend their marathon season by another week.

Johnsson was magnificent between the posts for Copenhagen - ending the night with 13 saves as United rained down 26 efforts on goal all told - while the Danish runners-up failed to have a single shot on target.

United - who won this competition four seasons ago - will now face either Premier League rivals Wolves or Europa League specialists Sevilla in the last four in Dusseldorf next Monday night.

Europa League 'final eight' begins - all you need to know
    No way past for United
Three hundred and sixty-four days after Solskjaer started his first full season in charge of United, he is now two games away from a possible first trophy.

The January signing of Fernandes has already delivered a third-placed finish and Champions League football and the Portuguese midfielder was again the eventual difference maker on a draining night in scorching heat.

The temperature was still 32C at kick-off at 9pm local time and United made a poor start - Fred's error almost letting in Mohammed Daramy, before Brandon Williams had to head away from the goal-line.

But despite their lethargy, United always carried a threat and were briefly awarded a penalty for a shove at a set-piece before VAR flagged an offside in the build-up.

Greenwood finished brilliantly off the far post but the strike was correctly called back for another offside before Solskjaer witnessed a far better second half.

Greenwood fired against the post again, with his left foot this time, Rashford tapping in but again from an offside position before Fernandes thundered a shot against the opposite post from range.

Johnsson's individual showreel then threatened to throw a spanner in the works.

Perhaps the Swedish keeper's best save denied Anthony Martial, who eventually won the decisive penalty thanks to a push from former Brentford defender Andreas Bjelland.

Fernandes fired into the corner without his trademark hop on approach to ensure a 17th European semi-final for United.

Man of the match - Karl-Johan Johnsson (FC Copenhagen)

Wolves' Europa League dream came to a heartbreaking end as Sevilla booked a semi-final against Manchester United on Sunday with a late winner in Duisburg.

Nuno Espirito Santo's side - whose pandemic-disrupted 2019-20 season lasted 383 days - had a glorious 13th-minute chance to take the lead but Raul Jimenez's penalty was saved.

They struggled to create chances after that and failed to hold on for extra time as Lucas Ocampos' header from Ever Banega's cross settled the tie for Sevilla with two minutes to go.

Wolves will not be in European competition next season after finishing seventh in the Premier League.

Five-time winners Sevilla - who are unbeaten in 19 games in all competitions - will face Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's United in Dusseldorf on Sunday. Inter Milan or Shakhtar Donetsk await the winners in the final.

The defeat will come as a huge disappointment to Wolves, who could struggle to hold on to some of their star players without any European football next year.

The season started on 25 July 2019 with a 2-0 qualifying home win over Crusaders in qualifying in front of 29,708 excited fans on their return to Europe after 39 years. And it ended after 59 games in an empty ground far away from home.

They looked exhausted after a quick start on a hot night in Duisburg.

Jimenez had a header saved after 37 seconds from Adama Traore's cross and then had a poor penalty saved after Traore was fouled following a sensational surging run.

They had two reasons to be aggrieved. Goalkeeper Yassine Bounou appeared to be off his line and defender Diego Carlos entered the box before the kick was taken and headed the loose ball.

The video assistant referee did not spot either infringement.

Wolves did not manage a single shot on target in the 77 minutes following that and were hanging on for large portions with a solid defensive performance.

Sevilla managed 18 shots to Wolves' six and the breakthrough finally came late on. Following a short corner Banega's perfect cross found Ocampos, whose glancing header left Rui Patricio with no chance.

Man of the match - Ever Banega

Sevilla playmaker Ever Banega was the game's outstanding player with 140 touches (no Wolves player had more than 44) and 118 passes, including the assist for the winner

Match stats - Jimenez's 100% record comes to end

Sevilla have reached the semi-finals of the Uefa Cup/Europa League for the seventh time - only Inter Milan have reached this stage on more occasions (eight).
Wolves failed to score in the Europa League for the first time since their opening group game against Braga in September (1-0).
Sevilla have won all three of their games English opposition at neutral venues, also beating Middlesbrough 4-0 in 2006 and Liverpool 3-1 in 2016.
Raul Jimenez missed a penalty for Wolves for the first time, having scored each of the previous eight.
Wolves defender Romain Saiss was shown his 14th yellow card of the season, making him the most yellow-carded Premier League player in 2019-20.

Sevilla wrecked Manchester United's hopes of ending the season with silverware as they edged a hard-fought Europa League semi-final in Cologne.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side lost their third semi-final this season despite taking the lead when Bruno Fernandes scored their 22nd penalty of the season after Marcus Rashford was fouled by Diego Carlos.

Sevilla, Europa League specialists, equalised before the interval when former Liverpool forward Suso swept a finish past David de Gea at the far post.

United's fate was sealed when they missed a succession of chances early in the second half as Sevilla keeper Yassine Bounou emerged as the hero, denying Anthony Martial several times.

And Sevilla, who saw off Wolves in the quarter-final, secured their place in the final when Luuk de Jong swept home a cross from Jesus Navas with 12 minutes left, United punished for poor defending which led to recriminations as Fernandes confronted Victor Lindelof in the aftermath.

Europa League kings Sevilla won the tournament for a record sixth time thanks to victory over Inter Milan in a thrilling final in Cologne.

The drama started when Sevilla defender Diego Carlos fouled Romelu Lukaku for an Inter penalty - and ended when Lukaku deflected Carlos' bicycle kick into his own net.

It means Inter Milan's wait for a trophy will tick over into a 10th year at least.

Lukaku gave the Italian side an early lead from the penalty spot for his 34th goal of the season, extending his record of scoring in consecutive Europa League games to 11.

Luuk de Jong scored two headers - from Jesus Navas and Ever Banega crosses - to put Sevilla into the lead.

Inter were level when Diego Godin nodded in to make it 2-2 in the 35th minute.

The game could not continue at that high tempo, but with extra-time looming, there was one final twist.

Carlos flew into the air to meet a high ball with an overhead kick which was probably going wide until Lukaku stuck out a leg and diverted it past his own goalkeeper.

It was a first trophy in the managerial career of Sevilla boss Julen Lopetegui.
