Domestic cricket season 2019/20 | Team Sindh | Discussion Thread

Possessing arguably the best batting lineup of the tournament, Sindh’s batsmen will not be easy to dislodge. They boast two prolific domestic openers in Khurram Manzoor and Abid Ali, and a powerful middle-order of Asad Shafiq, Fawad Alam, Saad Ali and Saud Shakeel.

Their bowlers are no mugs either. Sindh can call upon seasoned domestic performers such as Sohail Khan, Mir Hamza, Tabish Khan and Kashif Bhatti, as well as a promising young spinner Waleed Ahmed, son of Pakistani offspinner Tauseef Ahmed, and the raw quick Mohammed Hasnain who lit up the Pakistan Super League.

Strengths: Their batting lineup is arguably the strongest in the competition so runs on the board should not be a problem.

Weaknesses: Bowling attack perhaps lacking the depth of the two Punjab teams and Northern.

Players to watch: Mohammed Hasnain’s PSL displays earned him a World Cup place. Whether he can transition into an effective red ball bowler is to be seen. Omair Bin Yousuf meanwhile has made a strong start to his First Class career but may find it hard to break into this Sindh First XI batting lineup.

First XI - Anwar Ali (Karachi), Fawad Alam (Karachi), Hasan Mohsin (Karachi), Kashif Bhatti (Hyderabad), Khurram Manzoor (Karachi), Mir Hamza (Karachi), Mohammad Hasan (wicketkeeper) (Karachi), Mohammad Hasnain (Hyderabad), Omair Bin Yousuf (Karachi), Rameez Aziz (Karachi), Saad Ali (Karachi), Saud Shakeel (Karachi), Shehzar Mohammad (Karachi), Sohail Khan (Karachi) Tabish Khan (Karachi) and Waleed Ahmed (Karachi).

Second XI – Mohammad Sami (captain and mentor) (Karachi), Rameez Raja Jr (vice-captain) (Karachi), Adeel Malik (Karachi), Ahsan Ali (Karachi), Ammad Alam (Karachi), Ashiq Ali (Karachi), Ashir Qureshi (Karachi), Danish Aziz (Karachi), Ghulam Muddasar (Karachi), Hassan Khan (Karachi), Jahid Ali (Karachi), Mohammad Suleman (Hyderabad), Mohammad Waqas (Hyderabad), Rumman Raees (Karachi), Saad Khan (Hyderabad) and Saifullah Bangash (wicketkeeper) (Karachi).

White ball specialists - Abrar Ahmed (Karachi), Ahsan Jamil Mirza (Karachi), Shahnawaz Dahani (Larkana).

PCB central contract players – Sarfaraz Ahmad (captain) (Karachi), Asad Shafiq (vice-captain) (Karachi) and Abid Ali (Lahore).

Fawad Alam is a name that stands out for me. Can he hope for a national recall if he does well in the QEA? Sarfaraz winning the trophy will make his case for holding the Test captaincy much stronger also.

Hopefully not. Time to give Saud shakeel a go. Fawad time is over.

Other than Hasnian no other pacer has enough pace to rush the batsmen especially on flat surfaces.

Won't be surprised if this bowling attack goes for a few 450+ scores at NSK.

Please don't turn this into another Misbah debate, there's loads of threads on it already. Stick to Sindh. Thanks

Maybe, but the batting looks capable of scoring 450+ itself.

Sarfaraz Ahmed-led Sindh, a real force to reckon with

Karachi, 12 September 2019: Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed will lead a strong Sindh squad in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy first-class tournament that begins on Saturday, 14 September at three venues in the country. Sindh take on Balochistan at Karachi’s UBL Sports Complex in their opening fixture.

Sindh possess real strength in their batting line-up which includes some domestic cricket stalwarts in Abid Ali, Fawad Alam and Khurram Manzoor besides the seasoned Pakistan Test batsman Asad Shafiq who is also Sarfaraz’s deputy, young Saad Ali who made his ODI debut against Australia earlier in the year is another accomplished batsman.

The left-handed middle-order batsman, Saad scored a match winning double century for State Bank in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy Grade II tournament a few days after his ODI debut.

Sindh’s opening pair is likely to be Khurram Manzoor and the Lahore-born Abid. In 102 first-class appearances, the 31-year-old Abid has scored 6700 runs at 38.28, the tally includes 17 centuries. Abid scored a century on his debut ODI against Australia in Dubai, becoming only the third Pakistan opener to achieve the feat.

Khurram, who has represented Pakistan in 16 Tests, has scored 10166 runs in 162 first-class matches with 26 centuries to his name. Sindh possess one of the strongest middle-orders in the tournament with Asad, Fawad and Saad backed up by Sarfaraz himself in his role of wicketkeeper-batsman.

Asad has featured in 69 Tests for Pakistan scoring 4323 runs at 38.94, he has an abundance of experience in first-class cricket with a total of 138 matches, 8638 runs with 22 centuries.

Sindh’s batting is likely to revolve around left-handed Fawad Alam who boasts a 56.08 average from 155 first-class matches in which he has scored 11441 runs with 30 centuries, Fawad scored a century on his Test debut against Sri Lanka in 2009.

Sarfaraz will also be a real force with the bat in the lower-order, in 149 first-class matches, Sarfaraz has scored 7623 runs besides 471 catches and 49 stumpings as wicketkeeper. Youngsters Saud Shakeel, Ramiz Aziz, Omair Bin Yousuf and Shehzar Mohammad will provide the batting backup to Sindh.

Sindh’s fast bowling will be spearheaded by young pace sensation Mohammad Hasnain who has so far appeared in five ODIs and a solitary T20I for Pakistan, Hasnain who can bowl in the 150kph range is set to be Sarfaraz’s trump card along with seasoned bowlers Sohail and Tabish.

In 100 first-class games, the right-armer Sohail has taken 449 wickets, Tabish has been one of the major first-class performers over the last decade; the 34-year-old has a tally of 543 wickets in 118 matches with the help of 36 five-wicket hauls.

Left-armer Mir Hamza who made his Test debut against Australia last year adds further variety to the pace attack, Sindh also have two competent spinners in left-armer Kashif Bhatti and off-spinner Waleed Ahmed.

Pakistan all-rounder Anwar Ali is also a part of the squad and Sindh would be banking on the 31-year-old with 100 first-class appearances to lend stability to the eleven.

    Captain Sarfaraz Ahmed’s squad assessment:

Sarfaraz is happy with the balance of his squad and feels Sindh have the talent, skill and experience to with the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2019-20.

“It is a balanced squad with some very seasoned players. The first priority would be to make the team gel together. We have some experienced bowlers backed by Mohammad Hasnain, who has the ability to bowl with sustained pace which will be very useful in four-day cricket and it will be an ideal learning curve for him.

“We have a very solid batting line-up with Khurram Manzoor, Abid Ali, Saad Ali, Asad Shafiq, Saud Shakeel and Fawad Alam, while Omair Bin Yousuf is also a very promising player. Shehzar did very well last year.

Mohammad Hasan is the backup wicketkeeper, while in Kashif Bhatti we have an experienced spinner. In Anwar Ali, we have an established all-rounder who has rich experience of red ball cricket. I think we have the players that can take us all the way this season.

“We will take every game as it comes, obviously start is very important and a good start will help us gain some momentum.”

    Sindh Second XI:

The Sindh Cricket Association’s Second XI side will be led and mentored by Mohammad Sami. It includes internationals Rameez Raja jr and Rumman Raees, whose availability is subject to fitness.

Sami, who featured in 36 Tests, 87 ODIs and 13 T20Is for Pakistan, possesses abundance of first-class experience. He has 179 matches to his name in which the 38-year-old has taken 610 wickets at 27.35.

Sami will have the promising left-armer Ghulam Muddasar and the experienced right-armer Adeel Malik as his fast-bowling partners.

Youngsters Ammad Alam, Ahsan Ali, Danish Aziz and Jahid Ali will be the batting mainstays along with Rameez.

Sindh take on Balochistan in their tournament opener from 14 September at the NBP Stadium in Karachi.

Would have agreed with coach but he has mostly selected overage cricketer for t20 so entry of another 34 year old tabish would not been bad choice considering he has performed in this year first class season

As far karachi media is concerned they are after him since he was u19 coach and not a single u19 player was selected from karachi for u19 asia cup.

As usual, media focusing on the wrong players. Hasan Mohsin, Hasan Khan, Ghulam Mudassar and Danish Aziz were the ones who may feel aggrieved to not be in the first XI.

Tabish Khan has played 19 T20s in the last 5 years and has 20 wickets at an average of 31 with an economy rate of 8.6.

It was a poor first xi squad for the national T20 tournament by any merit and selectors of this team should be held accountable. Few players who had better ability for T20 were ignored to accommodate the seniors.

Batsmen selected werent suitable for the format except maybe Ahsan Ali.
