Cricket action continued on day two of the three-day non first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy.

At Hayatabad Sports Complex in Peshawar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa neared victory when stumps were drawn as Central Punjab, while following-on, were 50 for six and had a trail of 197 to surmount.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Ahmad Jamal was the major tormentor with five wickets for 46 runs in Central Punjab’s first innings. He was supported by fellow right-arm medium-fast Irfanullah Shah, who took three wickets for 64 runs.

In Central Punjab’s second innings, it was the spinners who did the damage.

Leg-spinner Asad Afridi spun web around the batsmen, while bowling tight six overs which not only leaked five runs but also garnered his side three wickets. Sajid Khan, with his right-arm off-break, added to Central Punjab’s woes by picking up two wickets for 12 runs in eight overs.

In the second match of the day, Northern, resuming their first innings on 73 for one were dismissed for 220 against Balochistan at the NBP Stadium in Karachi.

Ibtisam Shaikh grabbed five wickets for 91 runs.

In return, Balochistan in their second innings struggled and scored 122 for seven in 38 overs, when stumps were drawn. Akbar-ur-Rehman top scored with 44, while Fahad Iqbal chipped in with 30.

The fixture between Sindh and Southern Punjab at Bahawalpur’s Dring Stadium commenced on Thursday after the first day’s play was washed out.

Sindh, after being put into bat, were 289 all-out in 82.4 overs. Southern Punjab’s bowlers struck early in the piece, but solid contributions by Ramiz Raja (88 off 155), Saifullah Bangash (70 off 135) and Ashar Qureshi (60 off 69) took the batting side to a decent total.

It was the spinners, for Southern Punjab, who had a major share of wickets. Zulfiqar Babar, the slow left-arm, picked up four wickets for 105 runs and off-spinner Salman Ali Agha took three wickets for 65 runs. Right-arm fast-bowler Mohammad Imran picked up two wickets for 11 runs.

The standard of the 2nd XI competition looks horrible. I mean, just look at the numbers of these batsmen in top and middle order positions ! These guys were previously bringing down the quality of FC cricket.

This is why I'm against expanding the number of FC teams from 6. Keep the dross away.

Some interesting things to note from the above scores.

Zain Abbas has played only 4 out of 6 games and is #3 on the batting charts with 2 hundreds. He probably needs to be in the first XI. Guessing will replace Shan Masood in the next round.

Ammad Alam made 144 today for Sindh out of a team total of 278. Next highest score was 25. He's just 21 years old and had a couple of good knocks in the National T20 Cup 2nd XI too.

Middle-order batsman Mohammad Irfan Khan is now the top-scorer of the tournament... and he is apparently all of 17 years old!

The format of this 2nd XI tournament is not really encouraging players to play similarly to the 1st XI tournament.

3-day games are good when the pitches are balanced. Despite some low scores, the tournament has been generally high-scoring so far.

Teams are trying to make huge scores within the stipulated 83 overs per side, thus we're seeing teams going at 4-4.5 runs per over at times. In contrast, in the 1st XI tournament run-rates are much lower as there is no limit in terms of overs.

Positive batting has it's advantages but I think it's gone too far. These batsmen are smashing big runs at high SRs with ease, they'll find it tough to adjust to the 1st XI if they're promoted because the style of play between the two formats is quite contrasting at the moment.

I agree. Most of these matches are just ending in draws. The pitches are too flat and the batsmen aren't playing long format knocks, they are trying to smash it and it's working due to the flatness of the wickets.

They know it will be a draw before they even arrive at the ground.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 2nd XI captain charged for changing condition of the ball (non-identification)

    Lahore, 29 November 2019:

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 2nd XI captain Mehran Ibrahim has been reprimanded for a Level 1 offence under Clause 2.14 of the PCB Code of Conduct for Player and Player Support Personnel, which relates to changing the condition of the ball (non-identification) during a match, in his team’s four-day non first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2nd XI final against Southern Punjab at the State Bank Ground in Karachi on Thursday.

The incident happened at the end of the 61st over of Southern Punjab’s first innings on Thursday when umpires Shozab Raza and Rashid Riaz checked the ball and found very obvious unnatural scratches on the ball and treated that as changing the condition of the ball under the non-identification procedure.

The matter was reported to match referee Mohammad Javed who, on the basis of a preliminary review, determined that Mehran, as captain, had a case to answer for the contravention as the incident related to non-identification of the player (Level 1, Clause 2.14) under the PCB Code of Conduct and issued him a Notice of Charge. Mehran accepted the charge and was issued a Warning by the match referee.
