    [VIDEO] Talent Spotter: Mohammad Haris

A profile of a young wicket-keeper batsman from Peshawar, who has caught the eye of cricket enthusiasts with some impactful innings for the Pakistan Under-19 side.

    Name: Mohammad Haris

    Born: 30th March, 2001, Peshawar

Major teams: Pakistan Under-19s, Peshawar Under-19s, Peshawar Region Under 19s, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Under-19s

    Batting style: Right-hand bat

    Fielding position: Wicket-keeper

    Height : 5ft 4in

    Interest in cricket and education

Like other youngsters in Pakistan, I started playing tape-ball cricket on the streets around my home in Peshawar where I used to play cricket with my cousins and brother. Even at that time, I was very fond of batting and used to bat most of the time and wouldn’t let them take a turn so am sure they weren’t too happy about that! My mother wasn’t too keen about me playing cricket and would scold me for that, but my father had no problems as he knew that people can make a big name in this game in the same way that the likes of Aamir Sohail and Wasim Akram had done so. However, all this time, I have kept on giving first preference to my studies and am currently in the first year at Government College in Peshawar.

Playing hardball cricket in 2014 and progress to regional Under-19 cricket

My love for the game took me to Mazullah Khan Cricket academy in Peshawar where I started to play hard-ball cricket in 2014. This is also where I established myself as a wicket-keeper batsman and worked very hard and in 2017, I was asked to play for Peshawar District Under-19s. This was because I had earlier missed the cut-off date to be part of the Under-16s side and so went straight into the Under-19 system. I then moved onto Peshawar Region and took part in the Inter Region Under-19 One Day Tournament in 2018/19 where in 9 innings, I scored 237 runs at an average of 33.86. I also took part in the Inter Region Under-19 Three Day Tournament in 2018/19 where in 7 innings, I scored 423 runs, including 2 hundreds and one fifty at an excellent average of 60.43.

Pakistan Under-19 tours of Sri Lanka and South Africa

Based on my performances in regional Under-19 tournaments, I was asked to come for trials for the Pakistan Under-19s side. My first tour with the Under-19s was to Sri Lanka in May 2019 where in 4 One-Day matches, I scored 82 runs with one fifty. Based on my performances in Sri Lanka, I was selected for the next Under-19 tour of South Africa where in 7 One-Day matches I hit 275 runs which included 3 fifties. I was also named man of the match on two occasions in a series where we won all seven games. Our spirits were sky-high due to these victories as we headed for our next assignment which was the ACC Under-19 Asia Cup in Sri Lanka.

Representing Pakistan Under-19s at the ACC Under-19 Asia Cup in Sri Lanka

The results in this tournament were disappointing for the whole side as we were knocked-out in the group stages due to defeats against Afghanistan and India. I believe playing in a tournament where you meet a new team in every game presents a difficult challenge as opposed to a series where you can get used to one opposition. All in all, it was a great learning experience for me and my teammates and I do hope we will be able to use these lessons to improve ourselves in the future. On a personal note, I was pleased about my own performances as I scored 96 runs in 3 matches which included one fifty, against some quality bowling attacks.

Batting style and Jos Buttler as a role-model

From my club cricket days, I have always played as a wicket-keeper-batsman. In the Pakistan Under-19 side, our captain Rohail Nazir is a wicket-keeper so I have played as a batsman, although I did pick up wickets in one of the ACC Under-19 Asia Cup games when I was asked to bowl. Jos Buttler is my role-model and I love the way he plays aggressively to score runs quickly. He messes up the planning of his opponents and seems to scare them too which is enjoyable to watch. I also play aggressively but always judge the match situation so that I play at a strike-rate which helps the team win the game. Whilst I like to play aggressively, let me say that I will have no problems in playing in all three formats of the game and would love to be part of a Pakistan Test or LOI side one day. I have been lucky to have worked with some excellent coaches at the national Under-19 level who have encouraged me to score more runs and God Willing I will have better results to show for myself in the future.

Domestic cricket and participation in Pakistan Super League (PSL)

I would have loved to have played in first-class cricket this season, but I suppose it was not to be. There was a chance that my name would be included in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa second XI for this season but the management chose to have Gauhar Ali in my place. It’s disappointing but not the end of the world for me as I am now looking forward to getting myself ready for selection for the Pakistan squad for the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup in 2020 which will take place in South Africa. Of course, like many other young players in Pakistan, I am also hoping that my performances will be noticed by one of the PSL franchises and I will get a chance to play in the next edition of the tournament as well.

One to watch for the future.

Not many cricketers who can bat, bowl and keep wicket.

Peshawar producing plenty of cricketing talent these days.

Mohammad Haris not playing the National U19 tournament - he explained that the reason for this is that he has played 3 years at District level for KP so he cannot play for any provincial team - also waiting to go to China for some tour (details we will know soon)

Speaking after the Sri Lanka warmup game ahead of the U19 World Cup

"Yes scoring runs in such games gives you a lot of confidence, and Inshallah I will hope to carry this form to the upcoming World Cup matches in the future"

"These games have also given me an idea of the conditions here - Even in the past, I have already played 7 games in South Africa and with these 2 games, I have now played 9 games and have a good idea of conditions"

"When the first 3 wickets fell, my intention was to keep the strike rate going and also to rotate strike so that there is no pressure on the team and to play as per the required run rate"

"I believe that by rotating strike, you make the bowlers bowl loose deliveries and that is what I try and do"

"I took 2 catches and also kept for all 50 overs, and this will benefit me - and if in the future its needed, I will keep and bat for the side"

    .

Haris said: “ICC U19 Cricket World Cup provides a big platform for young players to graduate to the senior level and represent their country. The entire Pakistan squad is focused on delivering the goods in the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup.

“Jos Butler is my favourite player and I want to play like him in the middle-order. I was into cricket from a young age. I first started playing when I was nine. My professional cricket journey began at 15 in Peshawar when I started playing club cricket.

“I feel really lucky that I got full support from my mother. I used to anxiously wait for Sunday as we used to play a match every Sunday, sometimes for the entire day.”

Consistent and scores at well over a run a ball which is rare for the U-19 level.

Based on the video Abdullah posted in post #2, I would say he is probably better 'Technically' than Rohail based on the little I have seen of the two.

Some of the shots he played in that video are well beyond his age and experience especially the 2nd one IMO, that is as good as it gets; to be able to adjust/check the shot while moving down the pitch and still be able to hit it cleanly for a 4 is def excellent! Especially since it was not a usual ugly leg side hoick like Umar Akmal/Afridi and co.

Can be a good finisher if he keeps his head straight. I was a poor shot from him today, shot was definitely on and intention was right but when you are 4 down and still 15 odd overs to play you shouldnt be playing a sweep in the air. A well timed shot even on the ground could have given him a four but he went all out.

Misbah and Babar need to find a keeper for white ball formats. Rizwan is more of a red ball batsman.

I'm really hoping he gets picked up by KPK for the QAE Trophy this season so we can take a closer look at him and see how he fares against strong FC attacks.

Atleast he will play there. Rehan Afrdi will play first class.

Score runs and get promoted to first XI just like Abdullah Shafique and Zeeshan Ashraf

In T20s the best place to bat is to open. Many middle order batsmen open if they get the chance. I think he is lucly he got two opportunities to impress as a keeper and as an opener. Will have to wait for his chances coz one game left before the semi final and he would deservedly not play the semi if he plays and fails again.

    Great knock today.

Singlehandedly kept KPK in the chase.

Played some almost ABesque ramp shots vs Rauf and Amir at the death.

The kid has unreal potential mashaAllah, defo one for the future.

He has a good potential but people need to have patience with young talents. I personally believe that every youngster should have a breakthrough Fc season to knock the doors for selection. The timing of selection really matters it should not be too early neither too late. I hope he gets good chances in the first Xi in the coming season. Luckily for him Rizwan would be busy on international duties so he will get some good games to showcase his true talent.
Also Rizwan should be praised for allowing him to show some talent on play. Definitely can be someone who we talk about in a year or two.

If he performs well in the first few matches of fc cricket he will get promoted to first Xi. Also whenever Rizwan will be busy in international duties Harris can replace him. It is actually good that he is originally in the second team because he will get games instead of sitting on the bench when Rizwan is already there.

Same thing which I said in the match thread.

One thing which we fans usually overlook are the pitch and conditions. Haris should have ideally won it but, ball wasnt coming onto the bat on the wicket which was in use as good as some other surfaces we have seen. Other than Imad nobody was able to bat at a SR of 150+ for more than 10 balls and Imad with his 36 was the 2nd highest scorer of the match.

Not defending Moh Harris but, just providing the context to the innings. He is just 19-20 and would have possibly deserved criticism if it was a fast surface where others would have scored good runs at a high SR but, cant really criticize him much here in my opinion. He tried and hung around when everyone else was struggling

Disappointing start to his red ball career. Averaged 23 from 14 innings for KPK 2nd XI.

Definitely must spend more time in domestic cricket, still very young.

    The pitches were awful!!!!!!!!!

But he's the best keeper in the tournament. Probably second best keeper in Pakistan after Rizwan.

And Rizwan is the best in the world.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa vs Balochistan – Pakistan Cup:

Centuries by Adil Amin (sixth List A hundred) and young wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Haris (maiden List A hundred) took Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to their formidable 370 for nine score. The two added 227 runs for the sixth-wicket to rescue their side from a wobbly position of 99 for five.

Adil faced 90 balls and struck nine fours and five sixes in his whirlwind batting effort. Haris provided him immensely valuable support, he hit 11 fours and two sixes in his 75-ball innings. Fast bowler Mohammad Wasim Jnr hit a breezy 24 off 10 balls as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa finished with huge score.

Played well. Good to see hes got the modern shots. Plus he is decent off the backfoot and got a pull shot. Another thing i was impressed with him is working on his game is couldnt hit any shots down the ground and played some nice ones in his innings.

This young man is THE most talented young cricketer in Pakistan ATM, he is better than even Rohail .

He was the only Pakistan 19 player to impress me in last WC.
