India [497/9d] beat South Africa [162,133] by an innings & 202 runs to win 3rd Test; Win series 3-0

South Africa are yet to pick up their first points in the competition, but will need a massive change to their approach and execution to change that in Ranchi

    Overview

India v South Africa, 3rd Test
    JSCA International Stadium Complex, Ranchi
Saturday, 20 October; 09:30am local time, 04:00am GMT

Having picked up their 11th successive home series win – a new world record – Virat Kohli’s India continue to scale down new heights in cricket’s longest format, where they have long maintained their ascendancy.

Since Kohli took over as full-time captain, India’s win/loss ratio of 3.555 is by far the highest, with New Zealand coming in at a distant second, with a corresponding number of 1.583, among those teams to have played more than 10 matches in this period. Little about India or South Africa’s performance this series suggests that things will pan out differently in Ranchi.

For South Africa, the problems are deep-rooted. They have failed to come to terms with the retirements of stalwarts such as Hashim Amla, Dale Steyn and AB de Villiers. It has left them prone to top-order capitulations, as a result of which they are left to play catch-up from very early on in the game. The gulf between the two sides' batting has now been widened by the absence of Aiden Markram, who has been ruled out of the Ranchi Test after fracturing his right wrist.

While their spinners were already lacking the incision and discipline to trouble India’s batsmen, perhaps more worryingly for South Africa, their pace attack flagged in helpful conditions in Pune. Not often has it been the case that an Asian team’s fast bowlers have outperformed those of South Africa, but that has held true in this series, as India's fast bowlers exploited the bounce, movement and carry on offer in Pune much better to reap the rewards. And all this despite Jasprit Bumrah not having played a game.

India have already extended their gap at the top of the ICC World Test Championship table to 140 points. Another victory here would take them up a further 40 points and truly establish their supremacy, in keeping with their No.1 position on the MRF Tyres ICC Test Team Rankings.

Another no contest Test. Kohli should have tested his teams' strength by batting 2nd here - doesn't matter though, that could have resulted in a 3 day finish .

Test championship points are at stake. Don't think anyone will experiment now in test cricket.

rabada you have my respect. Good bowling. Still you average 55 in india.
    Let's see.

Anyway toss in subcontinent doesn't matter. india still scored more runs in the second innings so the pitches clearly shows that you can bat well till day 4.

faf is just a useless timid captain.

Today he got his outswing going. Occasionally he brought the ball back in. That did the trick.

One difference is he is bowling slightly fuller like Shami. In the last match bowled a touch short. New ball is swinging both ways. I would say just a natural new ball variation nothing to do with conditions. Once the ball gets softer batting will become slightly easier.

I know - even without TC, none will experiment in Test cricket. But, Kohli probably is more unhappy here, because over a long course of time, this toss W-L will normalize to around 50-50 ...he has won 7 against SAF at home and about 8-9 out of 12 against WIN, BD, SRL - it'll be balanced out in next UK, AUS tours.

ROHIT SHARMA batted India through a difficult new ball period after Virat Kohli had again won the toss to score his third century of the series and put his side on the way to another substantial first innings total against the Standard Bank Proteas on the opening day of the final Freedom Series Test match at Ranchi on Saturday.

Sharma finished the day unbeaten on 117 (164 balls, 14 fours and 4 sixes) for his sixth career century and in the process took his series aggregate past the 400-run mark. His partnership with Ajinkya Rahane for the fourth wicket – so far 185 runs in a little more than 42 overs – was also an Indian fourth wicket record against the Proteas, improving on the 178 that Rahane and Kohli had put together in the previous match at Pune.

It gave India a total of 224/3 in only 58 overs when play was abandoned for the day following first bad light and then rain.

It was a day’s play of two distinct halves with a new-look South African side – there were five changes from the previous match – having an outstanding opening session when Kagiso Rabada set the standard with good support from Lungi Ngidi and Anrich Nortje to put India back on their heels at 39/3 midway through the session.

They maintained the pressure through to the lunch break, taken at 71/3, and it could have been even better had Zubayr Hamza managed to hold on to a reflex catch at short leg from Sharma in new cap George Linde’s opening over.

But it was a different story for the remainder of the day with Sharma and Rahane accelerating to a scoring rate of almost 5 to the over to put on 134 off 29 overs and then a further 19 in the 6 overs that were possible in the evening session.

Sharma had been restricted to what was by his standards a moderate rate of scoring initially to need 85 balls to record his half-century and it was Rahane who first took the game away from the South African attack.

His half-century came almost at the rate of a run a ball as he plundered the leg-side boundary before he finished the day on 83 (135 balls, 11 fours and a six).

Rabada (2/54 in 14) and Nortje (1/50 in 16) were the pick of the attack and the only wicket-takers. Linde had a solid debut (40 runs in 11 overs) but Dane Piedt was again targeted, and the South African spinners only managed a single maiden over between them.

The most significant change to the Proteas line-up was the decision to move Quinton de Kock up the order to open the batting, and Heinrich Klaasen, who joined Linde as a debutant, taking over the wicketkeeping duties.

Two of the changes were enforced by the injuries to Keshav Maharaj and Aiden Markram while the others to drop out were Theunis de Bruyn, Senuran Muthusamy and Vernon Philander.

Klaasen and Linde become caps number 104 and 105 respectively to represent the Proteas in the red-ball format.

South Africa claimed three wickets with the new ball, but Rohit Sharma’s third hundred of the series ensured the tale on the first day at Ranchi was another of Indian dominance.

The series was settled by India’s victories in the first two Tests of the series, but with World Test Championship points to play for, South Africa would have been desperate to leave India with something, and started like a side with a point to prove.

Kagiso Rabada, as he so often is, was destructive early on, swinging one away to nick off Mayank Agarwal and nipping one back in to pin Cheteshwar Pujara leg-before to leave the hosts 16/2 in the ninth over.

Rabada's burst gave South Africa an early footholdRabada's burst gave South Africa an early foothold
Virat Kohli took guard and seemed to have maintained his second-Test form, when he made an unbeaten 254*, whipping stylishly to fine leg twice in the space of four balls to get off the mark. But a special piece of bowling undid him, Anrich Nortje moving the ball away twice before shaping one back in, beating Kohli on the inside edge and striking him on the pad. India’s captain’s review was struck down, and Nortje had a prize scalp for his maiden Test wicket.

All the while Rohit watched from the other end, in form after his twin tons in the opening game, and hungry for more after missing out in the second Test. With the ball moving around and wickets tumbling, this represented his greatest challenge since his promotion to opening the batting, and he responded in superb style.

He was circumspect at first, creeping to 17 from his first 49 balls, and it took an amount of risk for him to get moving, with an aerial flick through midwicket and a top-edged pull for six getting him going before Lunch, but thereafter he was supreme, finishing on 117 off 164 balls, with four sixes and 14 fours.

He received sterling support from Ajinkya Rahane, who started off playing a customary attacking knock, racing to 40 from 42 balls and almost catching Rohit, before consolidating, and reaching an early stumps on 83 not out of 135 balls. Play will restart half an hour early on the second day, with Rahane within 17 runs of a first home Test hundred in over three years, and India, once again, in a position of dominance.

Seems the toss by proxy did not work out for Faf....Really shouldnt worry about gimmicks like these and concentrate on the game.

    ===

In a bid to end his losing streak at the toss, South Africa skipper Faf du Plessis on Saturday brought Temba Bavuma as proxy captain for the third and final Test against India at the JSCA Stadium here.

However, luck did not favour South Africa as the coin landed in favour of India skipper Virat Kohli who chose to bat for the third time in the three-match series.

Wow.Ball did nip off the seam. Rohit managed to stright drive Rabada for 4. Sign of him being in very good touch. De Kock is sharing a laugh with his Mumbai Indian opening partner Rohit sharma.

Rahane was trying to play T20 for the last 20 minutes lol He was absolutely restless was like a cat on a hot tin roof. There was no reason for him to bat that way. India was not even close to a declaration. Threw his wicket away needlessly.

Feels very tough on South Africa. I have no love lost for them (at all) as everyone knows, and yes they aren’t very good - but touring India for three Tests and losing the toss every time, effectively being guaranteed to bowl first and bat last in every match, is a stinger.

India lost all 5 tosses in conditions where toss matters vs england. No one complained then. Saffers just need to grow up, man up and play the game instead of whining like little nitwits especially elgar. little midget has a big mouth.

We don't really need Saha the batsman. The rest are more than enough to pile on the runs at , particularly at home. We need Saha the keeper on these sluggish Wickets. But yes, Pant should return for New Zealand series.
