    Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2019/20 | Round 6 | November 4-7, 2019 | Matches Thread

Quaid-e-Azam Trophy sixth-round begins on Monday

    Lahore, 3 November 2019:

The sixth-round of the four-day first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, which commences from Monday, serves opportunities to the domestic cricketers to grab limelight as the Test team head to Australia ahead of Pakistan’s World Test Championship matches.

With only four rounds left in the tournament, the six teams will fight for every point to secure a berth in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy final, which will be held at Karachi’s National Stadium from 9 to 13 December.

Table-toppers Central Punjab will be aiming to consolidate their position when they host Northern, who are at the bottom of the points table, at Faisalabad’s Iqbal Stadium.

Central Punjab, without the services of Pakistan Test captain Azhar Ali and young fast-bowler Naseem Shah, enter the round at the back of a thrilling draw against Sindh, in which they looked certain to come out as winners for the most part of the final day’s play.

Northern have struggled to click over the course of the tournament. However, they will take heart from a remarkable double-century by Zeeshan Malik.

The 22-year-old struck 216 runs in Northern’s first innings against Southern Punjab at Jinnah Stadium, Sialkot, and registered the fourth best highest individual score this tournament. He followed it up with a second innings score of 59.

Northern will be led by Pakistan U19 captain Rohail Nazir as Umar Amin takes a break from the leadership role to concentrate on his batting – a decision that paid dividends with the left-handed batsman scoring 156.

This will be the season’s last first-class match at Iqbal Stadium.

Quetta’s Bugti Stadium, which saw the return of first-class cricket after 11 years this season, will also be hosting its last fixture of the tournament, which will be live-streamed, when Southern Punjab host Balochistan.

Southern Punjab will take the field under the leadership of Sami Aslam as their regular captain Shan Masood will be taking a flight to Australia on the opening day of their sixth-round fixture.

With an added responsibility on his shoulders, Sami will be hoping to stretch his good form with the bat into this fixture after the left-handed opening-batsman scored a century against Northern.

Southern Punjab are ranked second at the points table and are the only other side than Central Punjab in the tournament, to date, to have won a match.

Balochistan, ranked fourth, will be hoping to fill in the vacuum which will be created by the non-availability of leg-spinner Yasir Shah, who tops the charts for most wicket with 21 scalps.

This absence of Yasir is bound to add more responsibility on left-arm orthodox Mohammad Asghar, who, along with the leg-spinner, returned a four-fer in the first innings of a drawn contest against Khyber Pakhtunkhwa earlier this week at Bugti Stadium.

Balochistan’s Imran Butt will be on the radar of the fans after cracking a brilliant double-century in the last round. The 23-year-old scored 214 which helped him to the second spot in the list of the batsmen with the most runs this tournament.

In the third match of the round, third-ranked Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will be hosting fifth-ranked Sindh at Abbottabad Cricket Stadium.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s top four batsmen were amongst the run-getters in the previous round with captain Sahibzada Farhan, Israrullah, and Ashfaq Ahmed, who has the most runs this tournament, scoring half-centuries, and Adil Amin putting up a gutsy century.

Sindh will also have to wary of off-spinner Sajid Khan, who took eight wickets, including a five for 36 in the second innings, against Balochistan earlier this week.

Sindh must have run down the best possible back up options ahead of the sixth round after Abid Ali, Asad Shafiq and Kashif Bhatti left the side for the national duty.

But, that Sindh edged out in securing a draw against Central Punjab at Faisalabad was due to Sarfaraz Ahmed’s fighting second innings half-century, which would have uplifted the Sindh’s captain confidence.

That coupled with the presence of Fawad Alam, Saad Ali, Khurram Manzoor and a young and upcoming Omair Bin Yousuf in the batting lineup will make getting Sindh batsmen out a daunting proposition.

All three matches will begin at 1000 at their respective venues.

    Quaid-e-Azam Trophy sixth-round fixtures (4-7 November)

Central Punjab v Northern, Iqbal Stadium, Faisalabad

Southern Punjab v Balochistan, Bugti Stadium, Quetta

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa v Sindh, Abbottabad Cricket Stadium, Abbottabad

I don't get why PCB can't livestream all the games. They dont have to add commentary, just have the game up to watch.

He does owe a lot to Lahore Qalandars. But he should move on and focus on what is better for his career.

    Let me get this right.

Abid Ali is 32 years old, unfit, and averages 39 in First Class cricket, and Misbah has selected him for the Test tour of Australia.

Sami Aslam is 23 years old, averages 34 after 13 Tests and is averaging 120 in this year’s Quaid-e-Azam - 45 more than Azhar Ali - and Misbah has not selected him.

Why does the PCB tolerate this anti-youth policy? And why doesn’t the Chief Selector take into account current domestic performances?

Sorry, I don’t care if you are Donald Bradman, you don’t get called up in your thirties when younger batsmen are doing better and offer the prospect of a decade at the top.

I would never, ever, ever give a Test debut to a guy aged over 30.

Pakistan is in the reverse situation.

Why pick a veteran like Abid Ali (or Salman Butt) rather than a much younger man like Sami Aslam?

Same applies to picking Kashif Bhatti ahead of Zafar Gohar.

Franck Ribery could have gone a great job for France at the last World Cup: better than Ousmane Dembele. But they weren’t going to pick a 36 year old on his way down when they had a 22 year old on his way up.

Giving old men debuts in sport is a desperate move which should be saved for desperate times.

Ahmed Bashir dropped to 2nd XI after one match, Aizaz Cheema promoted back to first XI as a 40-year-old pacer.... Wasn't he assigned a mentor-ship role for the 2nd XI? What happened to that?

Naseem is lucky to have gotten a chance and he took it perfectly. I feel sorry for Bashir, but seniority culture is ingrained into the minds of these domestic (and international) coaches and selectors.

If CPs coach was smart he would realise Bashir is a longterm option and if he is groomed well, he could be a very good bowler for CP. Aizaz Cheema always was and will be a mediocre bowler who will be exposed on these pithces. Cheema will be done in a few months or a year, then CP will regret dropping Bashir.

Ijaz Ahmed jr. (Head Coach), Samiullah Khan Niazi (Assistant Coach) and Ahmed Shehzad (Captain)... That's the leadership group for Central Punjab. Of course, I'm sure Salman Butt and Kamran Akmal will have a say courtesy their seniority.

    Karachi, 4 November 2019:

Northern made a strong start to their Quaid-e-Azam Trophy tournament round-six first-class match against Central Punjab by bowling out the hosts for 226 runs on day-one of the four-day match at the Iqbal Stadium, Faisalabad on Monday.

Left-arm-spinner Nauman Ali who is captaining Northern in the match led from the front collecting eight wickets for 71 runs in 20.1 overs as Central Punjab were spun-out for a below-par first innings total.

Central Punjab won the toss and opted to bat first; the first session was evenly shared between the two sides as Central Punjab reached 105 for two at lunch.

In the post-lunch session Northern bowlers held the upper hand, Central Punjab lost four additional wickets to finish the session at 198 for six.

Captain Ahmed Shehzad (55 off 112 balls, nine fours), Umar Akmal (52 off 66 balls, three fours and three sixes) and Salman Butt (41 off 59 balls, six fours) were the main run getters for the hosts.

In the post-tea session, Nauman took all four wickets to fall as Central Punjab lost their last four wickets for the addition of 28 runs. This was Nauman’s best-ever bowling in a first-class innings.

Northern openers batted with confidence in reply, ending the day at 47 for one in 10 overs. Haider Ali was the only wicket to fall; he was dismissed by Aizaz Cheema for 12 runs.

Northern’s captain and wicketkeeper-batsman Rohail Nazir was ruled out of the match due to a hand injury, Nauman replaced him as captain with Jamal Anwar donning the gloves.

    Scores in brief:

Central Punjab 226 all out, 69.1 overs (Ahmed Shehzad 55, Umar Akmal 52, Salman Butt 41; Nauman Ali 8-71)

Northern 47 for 1, 10 overs (Umer Amin 19 not out; Aizaz Cheema 1-23

A 283-run opening wicket stand between Sami Aslam and Umar Siddique made Balochistan pay the price for electing to bowl first as Southern Punjab reached 296 for one on the opening day of the four-day first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy.

Left-handed Sami was at the crease on 149, his 13th first-class century, while Umar was dismissed after scoring 130, his 11th first-class century.

When play ended early due to fading light, Sohaib Maqsood was the other not out batsman on seven.

Sami has so far hit 14 fours and two sixes in a 255-ball innings, while Umar’s 255-ball stay was studded with 14 fours and a six.

The only wicket to fall in a day that saw 86.3 overs being bowled was grabbed by left-arm spinner Mohammad Asghar.

When play resumes on Tuesday, Sami will not only aim to collect his second double-century of the season but will also try to help Southern Punjab to reach 400 runs in 110 overs so that his side can collect the five maximum points.

In contrast, Balochistan will target to pick up at least two more wickets that will give them one bowling point.

They can pocket another point if they can grab a total of six wickets at the 110-over mark.

    Scores in brief:

Southern Punjab 296-1, 86.3 overs (Sami Aslam 149 not out, Umar Siddique 130) v Balochistan

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa score 225 for six against Sindh

    Lahore, 4 November 2019:

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were 225 for six at the close of play on day one of their sixth-round first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy fixture against Sindh at Abbottabad Cricket Stadium.

Sahibzada Farhan led the home side from front by cracking a 164-ball 88, in which he hit 13 fours, after Sindh captain Sarfaraz Ahmed opted against contesting the toss and bowled first.

Farhan stitched a 54-run partnership for the first-wicket with Israrullah, who scored an aggressive 34-ball 36 with seven fours.

After Israrullah’s dismissal, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa lost next two wickets for 30 runs, but a 78-run stand for the fourth-wicket between Farhan and Zohaib Khan (28 off 93) denied further inroads to Sindh’s bowlers.

With the wickets of Ashfaq Ahmed (five) and Nabi Gul (eight), Sohail Khan took the most wickets for the visitors on day one in which 79 overs were bowled.

The right-arm fast-bowler delivered 17 overs, which included three maidens, and gave 48 runs.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Rehan Afridi and Sajid Khan will resume their innings on 33 and 17 when second day’s play commences on Tuesday at 1000.

    Scores in brief:

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 225-6, 79 overs (Sahibzada Farhan 88, Israrullah 36, Rehan Afridi 33 not out, Zohaib Khan 28; Sohail Khan 2-48)

Why does the PCB tolerate this anti-youth policy? And why doesn’t the Chief Selector take into account current domestic performances?
Sami Aslam after his performance at Edgebaston gradually deteriorated to a point where he was awful. Let's hope he doesn’t crouch like he did before.

    Only 168 for Sami Aslam?

He now has 620 runs at an average of 155.00.

So obviously he has no place in the Test squad when an uncapped 32 year old is available and averaging 78.25 LESS runs per innings.

    Karachi, 5 November 2019:

Central Punjab spinners Zafar Gohar and Bilal Asif shared seven wickets between them to help their team gain a vital 35-run first innings lead over Northern on day-two of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy four-day first-class match at the Iqbal Stadium, Faisalabad on Tuesday.

Resuming at the overnight score of 47 for one, Northern were reduced to 134 for six in their first innings till the lunch break.

Central Punjab spinners Bilal and Zafar made good use of the Iqbal Stadium pitch to make regular breakthroughs. Hammad Azam (52 off 101 balls, two fours, two sixes) was the only batsman to offer some sustained resistance against the host bowling attack.

Umar Amin scored 42 off 85 balls with the help of six fours; wicketkeeper Jamal Anwar contributed 36 runs off 106 balls.

Northern were bowled out before tea for 191 runs in their first innings, conceding a 35-run lead. By dismissing the opposition inside 110 overs, Central Punjab collected full three bowling points on offer just like Northern had done on the first-day.

Left-arm-spinner Zafar finished with four wickets for 54 runs in 25.1 overs, while off-spinner Bilal took three for 57. Pacer Aizaz Cheema took two wickets.

By close of play, Central Punjab reached 137 for the loss of two wickets in their second innings to take their overall lead to 172 runs with two days play left in the game.

Opener Rizwan Hussain was batting on 69 and Umar Akmal was unbeaten on 53 when stumps were drawn for the day, the two have so far added 99 runs for the unfinished third wicket stand, giving their team control of the match.

    Scores in brief:

Central Punjab 226 all out, 69.1 overs (Ahmed Shehzad 55, Umar Akmal 52, Salman Butt 41; Nauman Ali 8-71) and 137 for 2, 26.1 overs (Rizwan Hussain 69 not out, Umar Akmal 53 not out)

Northern 191 all out, 64.1 overs (Hammad Azam 52,Umar Amin 42; Zafar Gohar 4-54, Bilal Asif 3-57)

    Lahore, 5 November 2019:

Southern Punjab continued their domination over Balochistan on day two of the four-day first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy sixth-round fixture at Quetta’s Bugti Stadium.

In a contest being live-streamed on PCB’s YouTube channel, Southern Punjab set up a mammoth first innings score of 502 all-out in 129.3 after resuming their innings on 296 for one.

Sami Aslam, who targeted his second double-century of the season by finishing the last day’s play on 149 not out, added 19 runs to his score before he was dismissed on 168.

The left-handed opener stayed at the crease for 292 balls and cracked 15 fours and two sixes.

Adnan Akmal, batting at six, built on the solid work that the openers had done yesterday - with a 283-run opening-stand, in which Umar Siddique scored 130 - with an aggressive 80.

The wicketkeeper-batsman cracked 11 fours and a six in his 86-ball stay at the crease, helping the batting side to cross the 400-run mark in 110 overs and gain maximum batting points (5).

With 41 from 50 balls, Abdul Rehman Muzamil, who batted at number four, was the other notable run-getter in the innings.

The bulk of the Southern Punjab’s wickets were shared between Mohammad Asghar and Amad Butt.

Asghar, the left-arm spinner, recorded his seventh five-wicket haul in the format with five for 130 in 31.3 overs.

Right-arm medium-fast Amad took four wickets for 103 runs in 24 overs.

Balochistan bagged one bowling point for having Southern Punjab five down by the end of 110 overs.

In their reply, Balochistan were 37 for one in 12.4 overs when stumps were drawn.

Azeem Ghumman and Imran Butt, who scored a double-century in his side’s last round fixture against Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, batted at eight and 19 respectively.

After hitting two fours, Awais Zia (nine off eight) fell to Irfan jnr.

    Scores in brief:

Southern Punjab 502 all-out, 129.3 overs (Sami Aslam 168, Umar Siddique 130, Adnan Akmal 80, Abdul Rehman Muzamil 41, Sohaib Maqsood 36, Mohammad Irfan 23; Mohammad Asghar 5-130; Amad Butt 4-103)

Balochistan 37-1, 12.4 overs (Imran Butt 19; Irfan jnr 1-15)

Omair Bin Yousaf scored a solid 56 and stitched a 51-run partnership for the first-wicket with Khurram Manzoor (19).

Junaid’s second scalp was middle-order batsman Saad Ali - bowled on first ball.

Left-handed batsmen Saud Shakeel and Fawad Alam batted at 35 and 29 when stumps were drawn.
