    Australia v Pakistan | 3rd T20I | Perth Stadium, Perth | 8th November, 2019 | Pakistan Innings

Pakistan have not been at their best under Babar Azam, and another defeat would make it five in a row for the world’s No.1 team.

    Overview

    Australia v Pakistan
    3rd T20I
    Perth Stadium, Perth
    Friday, 8 November; 04:30pm local, 08:30am GMT

Australia are unstoppable. In a format they have historically struggled to come to grips with, no less. They have been rampant in each of the completed games in their home summer so far. It’s more proof of the value of being able to identify specialists at a time when the three formats are becoming increasingly distant in terms of the skills they require, and of building a squad with well-defined roles.

Pakistan are somehow clinging on to their No.1 ranking, but their performances are increasingly doing little to justify that position. Their 3-0 sweep at the hands of a weakened Sri Lanka, in their own conditions, seems to have sent them on a tailspin. Heads have rolled, new captains appointed, but the results have remained the same.

    What happened last time

Babar Azam was once again the shining jewel in a top order that fell apart rapidly. Iftikhar Ahmed arrested the slide with a 34-ball 62* late in the innings, to give Pakistan a reasonable score to defend. But Steve Smith demolished the target with 51-ball 80* as Australia cantered to victory.

    What they said

Steve Smith, Australia batsman: “I thought the bowlers set it up early. It was probably a 170 wicket I reckon at least. They bowled beautifully. Then it was just about timing the run and fortunately I was able to do that.”

Babar Azam, Pakistan captain: “Steve Smith took the match away. He played a magnificent innings. It's very difficult when we lose early wickets.”

    Conditions

A bright and sunny evening awaits in Perth. This will be the new stadium's T20I debut. It has hosted two ODIs prior to this; in the last of those, Australia were shot out for 152, before South Africa ran down the target with nearly 21 overs to spare.

Pakistan believe they are capable of making short work of Australia's middle order in Friday's Twenty20 series decider in Perth.

That's if they can get through the world-class batsmen standing in their way.

The combination of Aaron Finch, David Warner and Steve Smith is already threatening to become the most potent top order in T20 international cricket.

In the five T20s he has played since returning from suspension - including a 3-0 series whitewash of Sri Lanka and two games against Pakistan - Warner has plundered 239 runs and only been dismissed once.

Smith has been similarly potent, compiling an unbeaten 80 off 51 balls in Sydney to hand Australia a 1-0 series lead over Pakistan.

Australia's batting has been so dominant with the addition of Smith and Warner that Alex Carey, nominally batting at No.6, has yet to face a ball since their return.

With Glenn Maxwell absent from the team as he deals with a mental health issue, veteran Pakistan quick Wahab Riaz believes there is a level of vulnerability in Australia's middle order of Ashton Turner, Ben McDermott and Carey.

"Warner and Smith, they are world-class batsmen and we know they are very destructive as well," Wahab told reporters on Thursday.

"Same goes with Finch as well.

"If we got three early wickets - if we get Finch, Warner and Smith out early - then I think we can easily go through the middle order and the tailenders against Australia."

Pakistan's hopes of levelling the series at Optus Stadium will also rest upon a more even batting contribution, with skipper Babar Azam - the world's No.1-ranked T20 batsman - scoring half-centuries in both games but lacking support.

"He's leading from the front," Wahab said.

"You've seen him batting in the first two games - he's been very confident, he's scoring runs. And obviously it's a new challenge for him and he will get more confidence and he will get more experience as he progresses in his career."

Experienced all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez advised Pakistan team players to stay aggressive and play their natural game in the third and last T20I against Australia on Friday.

“They don’t need to execute something new. Whatever their strength is they should try to stick on that. In Australian condition, you need to play positive cricket which helps you achieve strong results,” he said while talking to the media in Lahore.

The right-handed batsman believes that youngsters will gain exposure from tough tour of Australia and they will come back with lot of learning experiences. “I think this tour is a golden chance for youngsters to learn. They should try to fulfill their role whenever they get a chance,” Hafeez said.

Talking about Iftikhar Ahmed’s mesmerizing performance in the second contest, Hafeez said that he is an amazing cricketer. “Iftikhar is a strong hitter of the ball. You can use him wherever you want. He knows how to deliver and has done often in domestic cricket,” he highlighted.

Hafeez also praised new T20I skipper Babar Azam for his consistent performance. “Babar is a match-winning player. His consistency makes him unbeatable. I pray for him to get more success,” he concluded.

It must be noted here that Australia is leading the three-match T20I series 1-0 against Pakistan. Both teams will face each other in the last contest on Friday at Perth.

Under Hafeez’s captaincy we do managed to win one ODI against Australia’s full strength in their own den.

Looked weirdly nervous today, seemed pretty confident with the Urdu in the previous 2 tosses and press conferences. It almost seemed like he was caught up and pondering whether to try and respond in English today

I know he don't have to be a English professor, but this deficiency of babar is really kinda embarrassing in this day and age, just shows how the mighty have fallen from Oxford graduate in Imran khan to this.

Further evidence that Misbah is failing to be subordinate to Babar, which is his job - Misbah is his servant.

Typical Misbah today. Adds yet another slow scoring nudger to the batting, and gives his fast bowling dwarf his only appearance of the tour. Now he’s done that he’ll pick Imran for the Tests.

Another brainless Misbah decision. Take him to his second home, Australia, then don’t pick him even once.

Misbah is almost stupid enough to open the bowling in a Test in Australia with Yasir Shah. Oh hold on, he actually did!

It’s not okay to stand by and give Misbah a chance while he inflicts his insane choices on the national team. People have a responsibility to call him out for the unqualified, self-serving, interest-conflicted destructive force that he is.

The old WACA ground was not only quick and bouncy but was also fairly good for swing bowlers by Australian standards. Is there any swing here?
