[PICTURES] MCC announce 12-man squad led by Kumar Sangakkara for tour of Pakistan

It has been confirmed today that Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) will be sending a touring squad to Pakistan in 2020.

Captained by current MCC President Kumar Sangakkara, the Club will send a team to Lahore in February next year, playing a number of matches in the city.

The concept of a tour to Pakistan has been a long-stated aim of the MCC World Cricket committee, with its Members having expressed an interest in helping Pakistan during the country’s exile from hosting international cricket.

Following an attack on the touring Sri Lanka team’s bus in Lahore in 2009, Pakistan’s home Test matches have been played on neutral territory, until very recently, as a two-Test series between the sides – part of the World Test Championship – began last week.

At the MCC World Cricket committee meeting held at Lord’s in August, the WCC re-affirmed their support in seeing touring sides return to Pakistan – with security analysis being a prerequisite – following a presentation and discussion with Wasim Khan, the Chief Executive of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

It was agreed that MCC would consider touring Pakistan in the future and following a full investigation into security measures, and assessment into the viability of the trip, the Club can confirm they have accepted an invitation from the PCB to tour in February.

Guy Lavender, MCC Chief Executive & Secretary said: “The people of Pakistan have been starved of seeing their team play at home for a decade and it is wonderful to see that Test cricket has recently returned to the country.

“As a Club, one of MCC’s priorities is to maintain its global relevance on the game by supporting countries in their provision for cricket, and we are united with the global game in wanting to see international teams returning to play in Pakistan.

“Of course the predominant focus has been assessing the relative safety and security considerations, and we are working closely with the PCB to manage a robust security plan to ensure the tour can take place.”

Kumar Sangakkara, MCC President, said: “It is hugely important to support cricket in countries such as Pakistan, and the PCB has done a tremendous job in rebuilding the international cricketing landscape since the tragic events of 2009.

“I am excited to be captaining MCC on the tour to Pakistan. With international cricket having returned for the first time in a decade, it is wonderful the Club is doing its part to strengthen cricket in Pakistan and I look forward to being part of the trip.”

Wasim Khan, Chief Executive of the PCB said: “Following months of dialogue, and the opportunity to put Pakistan’s compelling case forward to the prestigious and important MCC World Cricket committee, I am delighted that MCC has confirmed that it will send a touring team to Lahore in February.

“The decision by the world’s oldest and most influential cricket club to send a quality team is further testament that Pakistan is as safe and secure a country as any other cricket-playing nation in the world, and MCC’s tour is a further step forward in normalising team tours to Pakistan.

“The PCB looks forward to welcoming the MCC cricket team and we fully expect the squad to have a thoroughly enjoyable time.”

All of MCC’s matches on the tour will be played at Aitcheson College in Lahore. Guy Lavender will be the Team Manager of the squad, and MCC Head Coach Ajmal Shahzad will coach the group.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has begun preparations to host the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) XI. PCB officials surveyed the premises of the Aitchison College in Lahore and received a briefing on the arrangements in this regard. The MCC XI is expected to arrive in Lahore on February 15. Many former cricketers are expected to be invited for the tour. According to sources, three matches are scheduled for the MCC XI side. A one-day match will take place between 2019/20 Quaid-e-Azam (QeA) trophy winners Central Punjab and the MCC XI at the Aitchison College on February 16. Domestic Twenty20 (T20) champions Northern are also scheduled to play against the MCC XI side. The third match will feature a Pakistan XI side.

The PCB selection committee will finalise the team for the Pakistan XI side in this regard. Players who have performed exceptionally well in the domestic structure are expected to be part of the Pakistan XI side. The concept of a tour to Pakistan has been a long-stated aim of the MCC World Cricket committee, with its Members having expressed an interest in helping Pakistan during the country’s exile from hosting international cricket. Hats off to the MCC for doing what it is for: promote the good of cricket.

We all knew Sangga was a class act & he didn't need to prove it any more, but he has. Respect.

Really glad all the wheels are slowly turning in Pakistan fans favour now with tours & cricket returning & your domestic scene getting the shake it needs.

I honestly think all this will tale 5-10 years to really show full results but at last you can enjoy some rewards.

Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) have today confirmed their squad which will tour Pakistan next month.

The Club are sending a strong twelve-man squad to Lahore next month to play a series of matches, with MCC President Kumar Sangakkara captaining the side.

The concept of an MCC tour to the country has been a long-stated aim of the MCC World Cricket committee. It is a clear demonstration of the Club’s support for Pakistan’s cricketers and fans, who have been affected by the country’s decade-long exile from hosting international cricket, which came to an end last month.

MCC’s squad includes experienced all-rounder Ravi Bopara, who switched from Essex to Sussex this winter and has most recently been playing in the Bangladesh Premier League.

Warwickshire contribute three players to the squad with Michael Burgess, Oliver Hannon-Dalby and Will Rhodes all included. Hannon-Dalby and Rhodes toured Nepal with MCC in November.

Somerset’s Roelof van der Merwe, who will play for Lord’s-based London Spirit in the inaugural Hundred competition later this year, is named alongside his Netherlands teammate Fred Klaassen.

Scotland duo Michael Leask and Safyaan Sharif, Leicestershire’s Arron Lilley, Kent’s Imran Qayyum and Worcestershire’s Ross Whiteley complete the main squad.

MCC’s on-field presence will be boosted further by three additional players, each of whom will play one match for the Club during the tour. The trio – Liam Dawson, Samit Patel and Phil Salt – are preparing to represent teams in this year’s Pakistan Super League (PSL) and their involvement is part of a collaboration between MCC and the tournament organisers.

The Club will play two PSL teams – Lahore Qalandars and Multan Sultans – in the T20 format and will also face Pakistan’s domestic T20 champions Northern.

John Stephenson, MCC Assistant Secretary (Cricket) said: “We are thrilled to be able to name a strong squad for this tour, which blends youth and experience for a strong side of high quality.

“We have really appreciated the collaborative approach from the Pakistan Cricket Board and the Pakistan Super League, which has enabled us to arrange fixtures against sides preparing for this year’s PSL tournament as well as to secure the services of some of those participating.

“As a Club, we share the PCB’s wish in wanting to see international teams returning to play in Pakistan on a regular basis and we hope that this tour contributes to those objectives.”

MCC Chief Executive & Secretary Guy Lavender will accompany the squad as Team Manager, with MCC Head Coach Ajmal Shahzad providing coaching.

The Club has a busy touring programme in 2020. MCC currently have a touring squad in Argentina, and will also tour Denmark, Spain and Uganda this year.

A women’s tour to Nepal is also planned for 2020, part of the ‘Legacy Tour’ series, in conjunction with the MCC Foundation.

    MCC squad to tour Pakistan:

    Kumar Sangakkara (President/Captain)
    Guy Lavender (Tour Manager)
    John Stephenson (Assistant Manager)
    Ajmal Shahzad (Head Coach)
    Ravi Bopara (Sussex)
    Michael Burgess (Warwickshire)
    Oliver Hannon-Dalby (Warwickshire)
    Fred Klaassen (Kent)
    Michael Leask (Scotland)
    Arron Lilley (Leicestershire)
    Imran Qayyum (Kent)
    Will Rhodes (Warwickshire)
    Safyaan Sharif (Scotland)
    Roelof van der Merwe (Somerset)
    Ross Whiteley (Worcestershire)

The following three players, who will appear in the upcoming Pakistan Super League, will each represent MCC in one match on the tour:

    Liam Dawson (Hampshire/Peshawar Zalmi)
    Samit Patel (Nottinghamshire/Lahore Qalandars)
    Phil Salt (Sussex/Islamabad United)

The match schedule and itinerary for the upcoming Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) tour of Pakistan has been confirmed today.

The tour will take place between 13th and 19th February and MCC will play a 50-over match and three T20 games during the trip, with all the fixtures taking place in Lahore.

Lahore Qalandars will provide the Club’s first opposition in a floodlit T20 match at the Gaddafi Stadium. Lahore can boast Pakistan international stars such as Shaheen Afridi and Fakhar Zaman amongst their ranks for this year’s edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

Pakistan Shaheens - effectively the nation’s ‘A’ team – will play MCC in a 50-over match at Aitchison College two days later, and the hosts will be captained by Saud Shakeel.

The Club will then switch back to T20 for matches against Pakistan’s domestic T20 champions Northern, and Multan Sultans of the PSL, who will include England’s Moeen Ali and James Vince in their squad for the tournament which begins shortly after the MCC tour.

President of MCC Kumar Sangakkara will captain a twelve-man squad for the tour, which includes the likes of Ravi Bopara, Roelof van der Merwe and Ross Whiteley.

MCC Head Coach Ajmal Shahzad said: “This tour of Pakistan will be a momentous occasion for everyone involved.

“We expect the standard of cricket to be high during this trip. The MCC squad possesses both international and extensive domestic experience which I am sure will prove strong opposition for some of Pakistan’s best emerging cricketers, and three squads of talented T20 players.

“We hope that this tour helps contribute to the Pakistan Cricket Board’s wish of seeing international teams returning to tour the country on a regular basis.”

Why can't people use correct terminology.

List A game. Not an ODI.

    ODI = One Day International.

Shaheens and MCC are not international sides.

Former Sri Lankan skipper Kumar Sangakkara, who is also the President of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), has expressed confidence that international cricket will return fulltime to Pakistan very soon.

Making it clear that security is a major concern everywhere in the world, Sangakkara lauded the steps that have been taken in Pakistan over the past few years to encourage teams and players to play in the country.

“We should not lose sight of the importance. Pakistan’s strength, in the big picture, as far as global cricket is concerned and keeping it strong and healthy and the MCC tour is a part of this puzzle,” Sangakkara said.

The former left-handed batsman, who had toured Pakistan in 2009 when militants attacked the Sri Lankan team bus in Lahore, said that he was confident more international cricket will be played in Pakistan.

He noted that cricket was a global sport and belonged to everyone and it was important for teams and players to play at home and in front of home crowds.

“If there is no home cricket for a long period of time, there is always a danger that the people might lose interest and youngsters will move away from the sport.”

Sangakkara will lead the MCC XI, which will play a round of T20 matches against franchise teams of the Pakistan Super League as part of the club’s vision of supporting cricket in the country.

The former Lankan captain noted that cricket had the power to blend and join people of different countries together and recalled how Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and others had all come together to support Sri Lankan cricket in the 1996 World Cup.

“The more times international sides tour, that message becomes stronger and becomes harder to ignore.

“I think that is wonderful for the game, it is wonderful for the country and it’s great for the global game. We should not lose sight of how important the strength of Pakistan is in that big picture of having global cricket in a very, very healthy and strong state.”

The Pakistan Cricket Board is spending nearly $100,000 on hosting the MCC squad which will remain in Lahore.

Last December, Test cricket returned to Pakistan after more than a decade when they hosted Sri Lanka for two matches.
