England [204/7] beat South Africa [202/7] by 2 runs in the Second T20I ; level series 1-1

Winning a nerve-wracking first game would have done plenty to enhance a rebuilding South African unit's confidence, and they will now eye the prospect of a series win against one of the most dominant white-ball sides.

    Overview

    South Africa v England
    2nd T20I
    Kingsmead, Durban
    Friday, 14 February; 18:00 local, 16:00 GMT

Despite the dramatic victory, South Africa will know they have a few key areas to work on. Most notably, the middle-order, which, in the absence of Temba Bavuma who was promoted to open, looked a touch too inexperienced.

England will be keen to brush the first defeat as a mere aberration and return to winning ways come the second game. As champions of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2019 and finalists of the most recent ICC Men's T20 World Cup, they are one of the strongest white-ball sides at the moment. The one area they need most focus on, across formats, is against the tendency to collapse. On Wednesday, it was another such chapter which resulted in their narrow defeat.

    Remember the last time

England seemed to have the chase of 178 under control. At the end of the 17th over, they were sitting pretty at 150/4 with Ben Stokes and captain Eoin Morgan on strike.

Lungi Ngidi took care of one half of the threat in the 18th over by dismissing Ben Stokes with a newly-improved slower ball. When Morgan hit Beuran Hendricks for two fours and a six in the 19th over to leave England only seven to get off the final over, Ngidi scripted a dramatic closing act. He bowled a good mix of quicker and slower ones to dismiss Tom Curran and Moeen Ali to concede only five runs, and earn his side an unlikely victory.

    What they said

Lungi Ngidi, bowler, South Africa (on his excellent finish): "I guess it's a mental thing, to be able to finish off well in situations that require you to. It takes a lot out of your mental side. Physically, obviously I am trying as best as I can to get back to the pace that I was at and to hit the areas that I am known for hitting."

Eoin Morgan, captain, England: "Experiences like this, particularly with a World Cup around the corner, are just so valuable to the team. I think we learn more about both sides when they get put a little bit more pressure."

    Conditions

The pitch in Durban tends to be slightly on the slower side when compared to most other South African wickets, which could make Ngidi's slower balls a little more difficult to pick out. The weather is expected to be pleasant with negligible chances of rain.

Both the odi series and the t20 series reveal how crucial woakes and plunkett are for england's bowling unit. England look an average side without those two and without root as well.

Not every loss is a choke. Bavuma was given out and ran single, than it was overturned by DRS. That should have been a single. Pretorius was given out and it was umpire's call. It was fine margins.

ENGLAND TURN TABLES IN ANOTHER T20 THRILLER

    Friday, 14 February 2020

QUINTON DE KOCK hit the fastest half-century for the Standard Bank Proteas in the history of T20 International cricket but in the end it was England that triumphed by two runs in a high scoring second KFC T20 International match at Hollywoodbets Kingsmead on Friday.

The two teams thus travel to SuperSport Park for Sunday’s series decider with the teams locked at 1-1 going into the final match of England’s tour.

The match was another magnificent advert for the T20 format.

De Kock, having reached his half-century off just 17 balls as the Proteas went in pursuit of a tough victory target of 205, went on to finish on 65 off 22 balls (2 fours and 8 sixes) and, when he was dismissed, the Proteas promoted David Miller up the order to No. 3 to keep the momentum going.

The Proteas stayed ahead of England’s comparative run rate for three-quarters of their innings but were not able to do so at the death in spite of some power hitting by Rassie van der Dussen (43 off 26 balls, 2 fours and 3 sixes) and Dwaine Pretorius (25 off 13 balls, 2 fours and a six).

Chris Jordan was again the star bowler for England at the death and for the second match in a row had a chance for a hat trick with two wickets off successive deliveries.

But in the end the decisive part of the match belong to Moeen Ali who struck 39 off only 11 balls (3 fours and 4 sixes) and enabled England to score 89 off their final 6 overs at a rate of almost 15 to the over.

In the first part of their innings England had a similarly destructive contribution from Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow who put on 52 for the second wicket in 4 overs.

Moeen’s effort earned him the KFC Man of the Match award.

    Final over: 15 required.

    After 3 balls: 5 required.

End Result: Lose by 2 runs.

It matters not the course of the match, especially in T20, but the end.

Nobody will remember the small turns of fortune but they will remember that SA lost.

It was a classic T20I game. Both sides played well.

3rd game should be a cracker.

But it should simply pick the best players available regardless of what they look like.

Every team is a choker for you then. Because you think every loss is a choke. New Zealand are kings of choking. Let's not even talk about beloved team who have lost plenty of big games in embarrassing fashion.

Every time you lose is a choke according to you then.
