PCB refers Umar Akmal matter to Disciplinary Panel Chairman [Post #195]

    Karachi, 20 February 2020:

The Pakistan Cricket Board today suspended Umar Akmal with immediate effect under Article 4.7.1* of the PCB Anti-Corruption Code, which means he cannot take part in any cricket-related activity pending the investigation being carried out by PCB's Anti-Corruption Unit.

As this is an ongoing investigation, the PCB will not make any further comments.

Meanwhile, Quetta Gladiators are allowed to apply for Umar Akmalís replacement in the HBL Pakistan Super League 2020. The defending champions will take on two-time former winners Islamabad United in the opening match, which will commence later today at 9pm (PST).

    Notes to Editors:

Article 4.7.1 read as: Where either (a) the PCB decides to charge a Participant with an offence under this Anti-Corruption Code; or (b) the PCB considers that there are other exceptional circumstances relevant to a Participant (for example, where any relevant police authority has arrested and/or charged a Participant with an offence under any relevant criminal law in respect of facts or circumstances that may also constitute an offence under this Anti-Corruption Code), it, shall have the discretion, in circumstances where it considers that the integrity of the sport could otherwise be seriously undermined, to Provisionally Suspend the Participant pending the Anti-Corruption Tribunal‟s determination of whether he/she has committed an offence. Any decision to Provisionally Suspend the Participant will be communicated to the Participant in writing, with a copy sent at the same time to the ICC and, where applicable, the National Cricket Federation to which the Participant is affiliated.

    Just heard about it.

And this news has come in the morning on the day PSL starts and Quetta's first match.

PCB has been letting off Umar Akmal on issues ranging from disciplinary to UK's NCA report to charge Akmal during PSL fixing Tribunal for years.

For many years the PCB mafia has protected him in actuality ruined him and his career.

This is something serious, PCB has never suspended him before.

It'll be interesting to hear the actual charges. As opposed to actual fixing, it could be failing to report an approach. The latter, while very stupid, isn't as bad as the former.

And that's my being charitable for the sake of being charitable. Akmal's a complete idiot, who at best needs immediate help and at worst, well..

Amazing, I made a thread on him some 10-11 years ago and called him Lahore Dynamite. Such a talent. The way he hit Malinga for straight sixes and later when he killed the Aussie bowlers in a T20 WC match making brutal 94, you would think he will go on and have a big career. But he completely lost it. May Allah help him.

Letís wait and see what he is accused of doing.

If heís guilty, I hope they throw the book at him. My only reservation is that we have seen with Sharjeel Khan that this code can be misused to punish people without any evidence at all.

Sharjeel suffered an outrageous fate because 2 of the 3 members of his tribunal were completely unqualified to occupy such a role.

Letís hope that Umar Akmal receives a higher standard of justice.

I dont think PCB will suspend one of their premium PSL stars right before the tournament starts just for failing to report an approach. It has to be something more serious

Pakistanis at an institutional level are very image conscious, sometimes even paranoid. Thereís never smoke without fire. They couldnít hush away PSL-2 spot fixing case coz the ICC ACSU had reported the matter to PCB.

I'm sure his two diehard supporters on here are preparing the excuses as we speak.

Meanwhile for the rest of us, it confirms yet again that Umar Akmal's biggest enemy is nobody else but himself.

Anwar Ali replaces Umar Akmal in Quetta Gladiators squad

    Karachi, 20 February 2020:

All-rounder Anwar Ali will replace Umar Akmal in the Quetta Gladiators’ line-up for the HBL Pakistan Super League 2020 following the event’s technical committee’s approval.

The technical committee is chaired by PCB Chief Executive Wasim Khan and it includes Bazid Khan, Marina Iqbal, Sameer Khosa and Dr Sohail Saleem.

The 32-year-old comes in as a Silver category player. He has turned out for Quetta Gladiators in all previous editions, scoring 191 runs and taking 23 wickets in 32 HBL PSL matches.

Quetta Gladiators, the defending champions, will begin their title defence tonight with the opening match of the fifth edition against two-time champion Islamabad United at the National Stadium, Karachi, at 9pm.

Having Umar Akmal replaced by Anwar Ali is like replacing a Mini Cooper with Lamborghini. One of the best clean hitters in Pakistan.

If you mean me, not at all.

Failure to report a Corrupt Approach is a serious fixing offence.

Brendan McCullumís testimony in court against Chris Cairns admitted failing to report a Corrupt Approach at a time when it carried a minimum two year ban. I remain incensed that McCullum was not convicted and banned for two years given that he admitted it Under Oath.

If Umar Akmal has done this he should be tried and if convicted should suffer the full punishment.

If he did something, he should be punished.

But, Umar is too dumb to be doing anything like this most likely.

There's also a constant witch-hunt against him by several quarters. He's hated a lot.

Let's see what the inquiry finds.

If he’s guilty, I hope they throw the book at him. My only reservation is that we have seen with Sharjeel Khan that this code can be misused to punish people without any evidence at all.

Sharjeel suffered an outrageous fate because 2 of the 3 members of his tribunal were completely unqualified to occupy such a role.

Let’s hope that Umar Akmal receives a higher standard of justice.
I think him being dumb may have landed him in some hot waters. As he's not a fixer, most likely.

Let's see what the inquiry finds. If he has done something wrong then he should face the punishment.

Umar Akmal is the same age as Mohammad Amir and they both toured Australia/England in 2009/2010. How can it be that Umar didnít participate in stupid things whereas Amir got caught? There were pictures of the Akmals, Butt etc hanging out with Mazhar Majeed.

The unconfirmed gossip is not 2015 but an approach made to spot fix in the current PSL campaign which he did not report , not a fan of his off the field antics hence no sympathy but always liked Anwar Ali , not even half the natural talent but always double commitment, one of the few world class fielders in Pakistan & very clean hitter too

Waiting for the day when there will be no p....i player in a green shirt

You are looking at this the wrong way round.

I will simply point out two things which are in both the PROSECUTION testimony from the Amir/Asif/Butt court case and the ICC Tribunal Report.

    1. Mazhar Majeed was recorded by the News of the World stating that there were two fixing cliques in the team BEFORE the England tour, which fixed two Tests in Sri Lanka and one at Sydney.

    2. He added that Amir, Asif and Butt were not involved in either of those fixing cliques.

If Majeed was telling the truth - and even the prosecution acknowledged that he had no possible motive to be lying as he was risking a heavier sentence if/when he was caught - that means simply that Amir, Asif and Butt were caught while even guiltier men got away with it.

Itís like an agency of fixers and Pakistani player are the most in demand client for these bookies. Mazhar Majeedís clients got busted. I really hope more names are found out
