Can't judge the pitch until both teams have batted on it.

Lets see what India can do on here with the new ball.

boult is such an overrated bowler. He is a conditions specific bowler.

india gifted a few wickets here today but ok score.

Let's see how the pitch plays.

Yadav could be a game changer here. Either he will take some wickets or might give away lot of runs.

Very poor batting by India. Looked positive today but were over aggressive and ended up throwing their wickets in a terrible fashion. Pujara and Vihari got out to rash shots while Pant looked all in sea. Also, no major contribution from Jadeja.

    Eyes on our U.S.B now.

I think India left runs out there and the pitch isn't that bad.

India batted poorly and our bowling was pretty average.

Indians made this look tougher then it was. Commentators complimenting the bowling but India's shot selection was attrocious especially from the 3 batsmen that got 50s. Its a good supporting wicket wouldn't say it has too many demons in the pitch but modern batsmen don't know how to grind it out and keep composed. Indians played one shot too many and paid the price.

If India applied themselves they probably could have scored 400+

Exactly that's what I thought. No way this pitch behaved like a 240 pitch. New Zealand didn't bowl great either Agarwal kohli and rahane got out to decent balls (not unplayable) the rest was just nothing shots.

Good bounce and hint off movement in this pitch. I think this pitch suits India's bowlers more than New Zealand's. Indias bowlers are a good 10k quicker. Should get more out of this pitch.

It's hard to judge the pitch. There are periods the ball doesn't move and it looks good for batting then there's the odd balls and periods where the ball does move around and it looks difficult.

India had a good platform to score a big total.

I think they tried to be over-aggressive as last time they went into their shells (especially in the second innings) and still didnt score much.

I understand that but each time they got out the team was scoring at a good click being agressive is one thing but playing a shot a ball when you already have taken a few boundaries in last few balls/overs (Shaw/Vihari) and pujaras shot was so uncharacteristic.

The down fall of India today is for not honouring some basic rules of Test cricket - 4 wickets, 4 key wickets went today within 2 overs either side of a session break; at least 3 of them to unnecessary attacking shots and those three had scores of 54, 54, 55.

It was possible to post 350 at least, if not 450. This is actually a better track than Basin.

Yeah, they only needed to bat sensibly and they could have got 350 on board. Some really rash shots by settled batsmen. Also, tells us about importance of Kohli failing in these matches. I haven't seen Kohli throwing starts of 40s and 50s as often as Pujara did today or Rahane did in last test.

Rahane really needs to learn these stuffs. He has played 65 tests now and given a stable position of no.5 all through his career.

Tomorrow, itís likely to be 98 overs day. With three pacers, two aged over 30, third one coming from injury, India is going to struggle unless they get into bottom half by lunch.

I think, key for NZ here is to occupy wicket and make Indian pacers to come at them. Ashwin was always a better wicket taking threat than Jadeja, who is more economical - I hope it works; but taking wicket is key here.

Sad to see no aggression from India. Get Bumrah or Shami to give some rib-cage bowling to Kiwis and tell them some nice things about their female relatives in Hindi ( Thanks to IPL, most of Kiwis should be understanding Hindi) as there is nothing happening on the pitch now.

There hasn't been much happening in the pitch.

This is no green mamba, the tinge of the pitch fooled everyone.

Indian batsmen wasted a golden opportunity today and Kiwi batsmen have played sensibly and most probably gonna make some runs tomorrow with sun out. Indians are playing timidly like how they're playing their elder brothers in backyard cricket. No aggression in either bowling or words. When you play for your country, you need to throw everything you got at your opponents.

I agree. If we play the way we did today and in first test, toss would have still not made any difference in result. Very poor team performance in all departments of the game.

NZ vs IND, 2nd Test: Hanuma Vihari Plays Down Pitch Factor After India Bundled Out For 242 On Day 1

Hanuma Vihari on Saturday said poor shot selection led to India getting bowled out for a below-par 242 against New Zealand on a "fair pitch", dealing a blow to their hopes of a comeback in the two-Test series. New Zealand were 63 for no loss at stumps on the opening day of the second and final Test. Vihari, who was very impressive in his 55 off 70 balls, said that he wanted to attack so that Cheteshwar Pujara can play his natural game of grinding the bowling. "Yes, obviously as the pitch didn't do as much as we expected," Vihari was honest in his assessment of the green top.

"They bowled in good areas and knew what to expect from this track. Prithvi set the tone, Pujara spent time. All dismissals happened at wrong time. None of the dismissals were because of the pitch. Mostly it was because of batsmen's error. Pitch was fair," the dependable middle-order batsman said.

On this track, a total in excess of 300 would have been an ideal first-innings score.

Vihari looked in command while playing the short ball and he said leaving them would have also hampered Pujara's natural game.

Both of them playing a defensive game in the first Test in Wellington cost India dearly.

"As Pujara was playing at one end and I wanted to take that lead and play positively because he is a player who will play for a lot of time. We know that.

"So I didn't also want to take time and put pressure on Pujara or on our innings because if you don't keep scoreboard moving you will get stuck like in the last game. That's why I decided to play positively and take them on," Vihari explained his game plan.

He regretted getting out at the wrong time as his dismissal at the stroke of tea triggered a collapse in the final session.

"It was a wrong time to get out obviously just before tea as we had a good session. We scored 110 runs and lost only one wicket prior to that. I was batting positively but I played one shot too many."

For Vihari, going after the short ball was his decision.

"It was a personal decision. As a team we wanted to show more intent. Wicket was much better here and it was a personal decision to put the short ball away and put pressure on them.

"It didn't go our way on a couple of occasions. I am sure when we get opportunity again we can do it."

Vihari had played an A game at the Hagley Oval and his assessment is that the pitch would flatten out eventually.

"I played an India A game here and that's what I was communicating to my teammates that it doesn't do much after the first session and it really flattens out after that.

"It will slow down on day three and four. It played according to our imagination. It's a fair wicket," he assessed. He said Kyle Jamieson's five-wicket haul was well deserved.

"He will get much more bounce than other bowlers and that extra bounce is a factor on these kind of pitches where it is bouncy and much more spongy than Indian tracks.

"To play him on frontfoot balls are more dangerous than back of length or short balls. Jamieson deservingly got five wickets."

Shaw, Pujara, and Vihari threw their wickets away . New Zealand are ahead here. If they can get a lead of a 100 or so, I think they will win this test. India need Bumrah and co to produce something special.

Indian bowlers should've bowled a tad fuller. Should've got atleast one wicket but credit to NZ batsmen for playing the traditional way. Indians aggressiveness was their downfall.

That's correct. Threw their wickets yes but credit should also be given to the bowler. He made them play a rash shot by inducing them with a half volley. The ball reached the bat slower than expected and bamboozled them.

I think new zealand absolutely bamboozled india with the pitch rofl. It just looks feathered with a bit of green on top lol. It seems sort of flat.

New Zealand need to score at least 350.Ideally a score around 380-400 should aimed for.If Nz can do this then India will lose.India will will be worrying about saving the match which allow NZ to go hard at India.

Very weird batting by India.Exept Kohli and Agrawal, they did well seeing off the threat of swing early but then threw it away.I don't expect much from Rahane

And whats the point of a spinner here?Jadeja won't get anything here and can't bat in this conditions.Ashwin would have been same.If they played Saini maybe he could have got a wicket or two.Or Gill to prolong the innings. This doesnt make any sense.

Congrats @Aman. I don't see us coming back in this Test

    2-0 is very likely now.

NZ should look to bat once here. Score 600 and then declare.

I seriously don't understand why he should not be pushed into playing 2 seasons of Ranji.... He didn't play much in LOI's, he should have been with India A or back home....

But today he must be cursing Grandhome for dropping that catch as that would have saved him some embarrassing batting
