Did Mohsin Khan Bat Too Slowly in the 1983 World Cup Semi Final?

70 from 176 balls with just a single boundary in a limited overs match.

Although he was facing a phenomenal bowling attack.

Nevertheless, it was a comfortable victory for West Indies.

Imagine if @Savak saw that innings. He would have still been talking about it now given he keeps bringing up Misbah's 56 from 76 in the World Cup semi final at Mohali from 2011.

Different era of course, but the basic rules of the game were the same. Whoever scored more runs would win. We saw Kapil Dev get a big 170 in the same tournament. Mohsin's innings wasn't too dissimilar to Gavaskar getting 36* from 174 in the inaugural World Cup game of 1975 when you come to think of it.

Would have been an India-Pakistan final had Pakistan got over the line against the West Indies here.

Two boundaries in 60 overs from Pakistan.
    How the game has changed
Zaheer Abbas 30 from 38 with just a single boundary. Impressive strike rotation skills.

He was clearly following the team game plan which was not to be bowled out before the 60 overs. Zaheer Abbass, Imran Khan and Wasim Raja were the key to the fireworks.
I think the plan would have been to score 230- 240 odd.

Lol that Mohsin Khan knock was in tune with the time he was playing in. Misbah unfortunately deliberately operated 20 years behind the era he operated in.

Pakistan were lucky to have got that far.

One month earlier, the (UK) Cricketer magazine had a front page picture of Imran Khan with the headline

    “CAN PAKISTAN TOPPLE THE CHAMPIONS?”

But there was no bowling attack! Without Imran, and after Sarfraz but before Wasim Akram it was a disaster. You can’t reach a World Cup Final when Tahir Naqqash, Shahid Mahboob and Rashid Khan is your pace attack.

We already knew that the batsmen were flat track bullies: Gods in Asia and Clowns in England. But when that was combined with a High School quality pace attack.....

Misbah's 56 off 76 is a slow innings but it doesnt really tell the tale because it flatters it

It was 56 off 76 only because he had a few lusty blows for 6 at the end when the game was already lost so basically dead runs. At one point he was prolly 30 off 60+

I didn't think Imran bowl at all in 1983 WC. Odds were stocked against Pakistan in 83 semi. Imran unable to bowl Javed Miandad not playing, Richards in murderous mood. Pakistan's best hope would have big century by Zaheer Abbas. I doubt even that would be enough.

He was six months into his twenty months off bowling due to stress fractures of both shins. He had overbowled himself in taking 40 wickets in 6 home Tests against India. In those days a Test series was a much bigger priority than a World Cup.

I cannot exaggerate how bad the Pakistan attack was. Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe had vastly superior attacks at that World Cup - and Zimbabwe was nine years away from Test status!

Perhaps Mohsin got a tad carried away about the importance of his wicket to the team after notching up a famous double ton at Lord's the previous year which was only the second time Pakistan won a Test Match vs England, first at Lord's and first Test win over England in 28 years.

People feared the Windies bowlers in those days. The 1st time the PK individual around ( in my memory) hit the Windies around was when IK hit Big Joel Garner for 3 sixes in an over, in a series PK lost 3-2.
