Prasanna is a personal favorite of most cricket loving uncles i know from the *spin quartet*

I didn't know why until i saw some footage on Youtube, the guy had the most beautiful bowling action ever for an offie. That flight!

This is going to be way more cut throat than many people might think, India's spin legacy goes deep.

I'm not sure about the mother of spin bowling accolade. The greatest leg spinners are an Aussia and a Pakistani. The best offy is a Lankan and 2nd, 3rd on that list could be Pakistani also.

They have however produced large quantity of spin bowlers and I think, in mdoern times, Ashwin has been hard done by.

Excluding chuckers (no hypocrisy, won't rate Murali, Ajmal, Narine etc for the same reason)

    1. Chandrasekhar, look at his overseas performances, elite match-winner in all conditions and stats don't capture the full story similar to Qadir's case, Viv said he was more scary to face than Thommo
    2. Bedi, GOAT SLAO above Herath and Underwood IMO
    3. Kumble
    4. Gupte
    5. Prasanna
    6. Ashwin
    7. Jadeja
    8. Nadkarni
    9. Mankad
    10. Doshi

    Venkat, Hirwani, Raju miss out.

Laxman Sivaramakrishnan could have been an ODI great but his drug addiction ruined him. Look at his bowling in the 1985 World Championship.

Maninder should have been in top 5, had all the skills but probably the biggest underachiever ever. Kapil and Sunny felt he should have been in the Bedi class but alas he never had the hunger. Also some mental issues, he attempted suicide some 15 years back.

Spare a thought for Rajinder Goel and Padmakar Shivalkar who couldn't make it to the national side because of heavy competition. Both could have been international legends, Goel is still the all time leading wicket taker in Ranji Trophy and Shivalkar's FC record reads 589 wickets, avg 19.69, ER 2.03. Both jointly received CK Nayudu Award for Lifetime Achievement despite not playing for India, the only exception in the history of the award.

In praise of Paddy and Goel paaji

Hirwani could have been a great of the game. He had an unreal start to his career.

You forgot to add some words for Murali Karthik. I think hegemony and somewhat bias for seniors Kumble and Harbhajan prevented him from playing long for India otherwise he was a hell of a spin bowling talent.

If all the slow left armers I have seen, he seemed the most dangerous.

Verity was Underwood's predecessor, a wet wicket specialist. I find it difficult to rate players from that era since they weren't exposed to a variety of conditions (geography) and opponents (only 2 teams, others simply made up numbers). Someone like Bradman is an exception because of the statistical anomaly. I would place him behind Underwood and alongside Jadeja at joint 4th spot, Bedi and Herath being my top two picks. Of course that is just my opinion.

Beautiful action, as you said unlucky to miss out. In tests he should have got more opportunities after Kumble's exit when Harbhajan became a defensive bowler. He had a few attitude problems, so maybe that is an explanation.

Delivered an ATG performance against World Champions Australia in the Wankhede ODI in 2007. It was a dead rubber but we chased successfully against them after ages (almost a decade IIRC). Karthik first took 6/27 and then added 50 for the 9th wicket to take us home. Pity that he wasn't given a long run after that match, played his last match for India that same year after just 3-4 more appearances.

    https://www.espncricinfo.com/series/...-india-2007-08

India also missed a trick by overlooking him for T20s. He was prolific in English county, more so in T20s.

Looking at the success he enjoyed in Middlesex I feel he could have been an asset in our 2007-11 team.

If I have to make a list of top 10 Asian spinners of all-time in tests, it will be

    1. Murali
    2. Kumble
    3. Bedi
    4. Qadir
    5. Chandra
    6. Ashwin
    7. Herath

Good points, but for me the pitches within a country during that time varied greatly. It was also a very high scoring era, especially in Australia (Bradman) and Verity still had extremely good figures. For me bowlers from 30's, 60's, 00's deserve to be marked up due to how hard bowling was during these time periods

Yes I agree, an average of 33 is unacceptable, his ODI average was impressive though.

I think a player should be rated on their performance more than skills, so I will keep Kumble as 2nd only.

    Yes bro.

Kind of sad whenever India's great spinners will be remembered, guys like Goel and Karthik wol likely be ignored but we're really great spinners.

Karthik in particular could jabe been an all conditions bowler, like most left arm spinners are.

Harbhajan was always favoured because of his overall aura. Can't say I complain he was a fighter for us too.

We really have a rich heritage in spin bowling.

Even some of our discarded spinners could have long and rewarding careers for other countries

How is Qadir better than Chandra bro?

I can somewhat understand for Kumble because this region has not seen a bigger match winner spinner at home than Kumble.

But Chandra is ahead of Qadir, easily! He had the aura of a 150 kph fast bowler. Every batsman of tje 1970s testifies to it

Chandra is the most underrated Indian cricketer. 8 5fers and 1 10fer in WENA (toughest challenge for Asian spinners, no 'S' then) across 38 innings. https://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/en...s;type=bowling

Won India the test series in England (1971) when they were number one. Won us tests in NZ, Aus (albeit in 77-78 series), WI.

Among batsmen it is Gundappa Vishy who has so many ATG knocks, generally our batsmen are overrated or rated fairly but people don't look beyond numbers when it comes to Vishy.

There seems some romanticism with Bedi and Prasanna.

Even my dad, uncles always talked to length on Prasanna followed by Bedi. That how elegantly they bowled, their aura, this and that.

When it came to Chandra, I just ahead he was a freak.
