“We fought really well against a top team in our first intl fixture for six months” : Misbah-ul-Haq

We are feeling frustrated, just as the fans are, after the Old Trafford Test match but this is how cricket is. There are very small margins between victory and defeat and it’s easy to curse yourself when you’ve lost.

But, we should remember that we were right on top until pretty much the last session of the game and we played very good cricket. Sure, we need to improve 10 to 15 per cent and deal with pressure situations a little better but we shouldn’t be mentally down.

There is disappointment, of course, but we must not keep that feeling in our minds otherwise it will be difficult to come back but the team believes we can fight back.

It was a thrilling Test match and full credit must go to England for the way they fought back, came from behind and took the game away from us. There was wonderful cricket played by both teams. Sometimes luck doesn’t favour you, sometimes the opposition plays well – that’s the beauty of the game.

If we look back at the whole Test match, we controlled most of the sessions until the last one. You could say one session in our second innings had a big say and then obviously the partnership of Chris Woakes and Jos Buttler. They counter-attacked well and there was a bit of inexperience – and even panic – in the team that cost us.

There has been debate about whether we could have bowled more short stuff or we could have bowled Shadab Khan earlier. Maybe so, but you also have to remember that Woakes and Buttler did have quite a lot of luck in that partnership. A lot of balls went here and there, into no man’s land. If one of those goes to a fielder then the situation could have been very different.

We still need to improve, of course, but overall we fought really well against a top team in our first international fixture for six months.

It was a brave decision to bat first against England’s bowling attack in those conditions. Shan Masood batted really well and it was great to see his partnerships with, first, Babar Azam and then Shadab Khan that shifted the momentum.

Shan should be given a lot of credit for his innings. He has been working so hard – with coaches Shahid Aslam and now Younis Khan – ever since I took the coaching job last September. He’s changed a few things in his basic set-up and his approach to batting in South Africa and then Australia. He’s a different batsman now and Younis has helped him too. They have a good relationship from batting together at Pallekele back in 2015 when Shan made his first Test hundred.

The bowling was also excellent. It’s a young seam attack, apart from Mohammad Abbas, and both Shaheen Shah Afridi and Naseem Shah did really well. Yasir Shah bowled well in both innings and it’s great to see him back in such good form after a period of struggle. Those are positive signs for us. We fielded well, which was another plus, and Mohammad Rizwan was outstanding behind the stumps.

All the bowlers seem fine at the moment. They bowled a decent amount of overs but not too much so I don’t think there are issues of fatigue at the moment. But let’s see how everybody is feeling just before the match, how the conditions are and we will decide accordingly.

This is an unusual tour, of course, but we are feeling very happy and comfortable in the ‘bubble’. We are spending a lot of time together, which has allowed the group to bond well. We eat all our meals together and have enjoyed some very competitive games of table tennis and pool! There are some excellent table tennis players in the group, particularly Imam-ul-Haq and Imad Wasim.

My message to the fans is that you have given us excellent support from back home so far and we thank you for that. Please keep supporting Pakistan and we will do our best to come back in this series, which I really believe this team is capable of doing.

Seeing the title I assumed that "This article wrote by Misbah's die hard fan Major" but at end when I saw its come from PCB its really depressing. Looks like neither PCB top official or our coaching staffs (mostly Misbah and Waqar) don't give a damn of the team performance.

Instead of warn Misbah they are defending by making excuse for Misbah. Our team will go down even after Zimbabwe if Misbah stay another 3-4 years.

If Misbah was really well wisher for our team he should work on U15/U17 teams rather than working with national team where every team hire professional and skilled coaches which Misbah seriously lack of. He neither has skill nor any qualification or experience to work with players. it doesn't help if he choose 35+ ages batsmen or fast bowlers when players around 34 years retire from cricket.

Misbah is not bother with team performance so as Waqar. All they want money coming in doing nothing.

This looks like Misbah’s writing. It seems he is saying fans should be fine with losing its just a game. We are facing a top team after 6 months it happens. Sounds like a minnow mentality. No wonder we won’t go forward since we are so used to losing it brings us joy.

Where were the bowling plans for each batsman? They just bowled the same to everyone.

People are wrist-splitting a bit over this statement. Tbh - there is not much different he could have said. Everyone is disappointed they lost, including the team. Yes, Azhar Ali’s place is now under the scanner but I would rather he doesn’t put even more pressure on a struggling captain who cannot be replaced until the end of the series. What did you want him to say exactly?

What he has said about the international fixture after 6 months is true. He is not making excuses, he is trying to take positives from a bad situation. That is what a good coach would do. Don’t get me wrong - I do not think Misbah is a good coach, but, in this situation, he has said all he could have said. Also tactically, he was alright in this game - two spinners was correct; Shadab batted well; Yasir deserved to be backed.

    Try and understand.

There is a concept of ghost writers.

PCB interview Misbah and then a ghost writer writes it for him - Misbah doesnt get paid for this as this is part of his employment.

Interestingly this is the only article credited to him. He admitted no short comings. Just talked about positive things. I hope he knows that fans are not as dumb as he thinks. They can save that positivity in the dressing room, on the press they should own up to there mistakes.

The article is pathetic, doesn't really go into depth with the shortcomings and what they could do to improve. It shows Misbah has no idea how to coach this side. Can't expect much more I guess from someone who has never coached a domestic team professionally and lacks/has no relevant coaching qualifications.

I am not surprised by such a statement from Misbah. Misbah has been a true representation of mediocre in terms of captaincy & coaching (and even limited over batting). During his time as a captain, he kept mediocrity in the team, be it openers, fast bowlers, and other batsmen. He went with similar excuses when we lost 0-5 or 0-3 in ODIs or tests.

Problem is, when it comes to Misbah, winning is not the top most goal. It is fitness, discipline and being a yes man. Only those leaders/captains/coaches, who have a defensive and a loser mentality would have such a goal and make such statements.

For Pakistan cricket to succeed, Waqar and Misbah needs to be as far away from the team as possible. Both were horrible and defensive captains (we see that in Azhar as well now), and both are horrible coaches (Waqar's 5th stint with PCB as a coach, if you were successful before then why is this your 5th time being hired?).

A trait of a good sportsman/woman is that you acknowledge the loss, recognize the reason, learn from it and prepare for the next bout. Misbah seems to indicate that the team gave its 100% against the best team and came up short. Does that mean that our team is now out of steam and 1005 is not enough?

I agree with Misbah's comments. Yes it was Pakistan's game to win, which they lost and obviously everyone is disappointed, but people are being too harsh on the team. There are two more matches to go, and the team needs support and encouragement from fans to make a comeback.

    Truly disgraceful comments.

Mickey Arthur being fired and the hiring of Misbah is one of the worst decisions in the history of Pakistan cricket.

Not a good mindset for team like Pakistan. Pakistan lost the match which they should have won.

Also, Pakistan actually did well in Eng in the last two tours. Competing against top teams ... seems to be underselling Pakistan here.

Hopefully, the next match is won by Pakistan. That will set up final match as decider.
