PCB announce squads for the National T20 Cup

Squads for National T20 Cup confirmed

    • Head coaches select their respective squads from pool of players announced on 28 August; squads to be reshuffled for Quaid-e-Azam Trophy and Pakistan Cup closer to events

    Lahore, 9 September 2020:

Head coaches of the six Cricket Associations today confirmed their 16-player squads for this month’s National T20 Cup. The squads were finalised from a pool of players, which the head coaches had selected on 28 August. In accordance with the event format and team requirements, the head coaches will select and announce their squads for the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy and 50-over Pakistan Cup closer to these competitions.

The First XI National T20 Cup, for the first time, will be held on a double-league basis. The format has been changed keeping in view the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 and to provide the players with more opportunities to stake claims in the national side. With the HBL Pakistan Super League 2020 Draft to also take place in November, the tournament provides a great opportunity for country’s best T20 players to impress the team owners with their talent and mettle.

Northern will defend both the First XI and Second XI titles. The First XI matches will be played in Multan (1st round) and Rawalpindi (2nd round, semi-finals and final) from 30 September to 18 October and Second XI fixtures in Lahore from 1-8 October.

Northern’s First XI head coach Mohammad Wasim has named a strong side, which will be captained by Pakistan all-rounder Imad Wasim and includes Shadab Khan, Haider Ali, Haris Rauf and Mohammad Amir, who recently featured in the T20I series against England. The side also includes promising fast bowler Musa Khan and wicketkeeper-batsman Rohail Nazir, who led Pakistan in this year’s ICC U19 Cricket World Cup, while other internationals in the line-up are Asif Ali, Mohammad Nawaz, Sohail Tanvir and Umar Amin.

Imad will be available for the second round matches commencing 9 October in Rawalpindi as he is presently representing Nottinghamshire in the ECB’s Vitality Blast T20 competition.

Balochistan, last year’s runners-up, will continue to be captained by Pakistan international Haris Sohail. Other internationals in the side are Imam-ul-Haq, Imran Farhat, Umar Gul and Yasir Shah. The side will be coached by Faisal Iqbal.

Pakistan T20I captain Babar Azam will lead Central Punjab that also includes Kamran Akmal, Abid Ali, Bilal Asif, Ehsan Adil, Faheem Ashraf, Naseem Shah and Zafar Gohar. Babar, like Imad, will join the squad for the second round matches after finishing his commitments with Somerset. The side will be coached by Shahid Anwar.

Ahmed Shehzad and Hasan Ali were unavailable for selection due to fitness, while Salman Butt was not selected in the First XI side after he had failed to feature in any of his side’s matches in last year’s National T20 Cup. In the HBL Pakistan Super League 2020 for Lahore Qalandars, he has played in only one game to date. However, considering his experience, he was offered to lead the Second XI side, which he declined.

A star-studded Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will be captained by wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Rizwan. The side includes Fakhar Zaman, Iftikhar Ahmed, Imran Khan Snr, Mohammad Hafeez, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Shoaib Malik, Usman Khan Shinwari and Wahab Riaz who recently toured England with the Pakistan squad. Shaheen is presently representing Hampshire and will be in action for the second round matches. The side will be coached by former Test all-rounder Abdul Razzaq.

Former captain Sarfaraz Ahmed will be back in the captaincy role, determined not only to give strong performances to stake a claim for the upcoming home series against Zimbabwe but also help Sindh reach the final. Also at his disposal will be star performers like Anwar Ali, Asad Shafiq, Khurram Manzoor, Mir Hamza, Mohammad Hasnain, Rumman Raees, Sharjeel Khan and Sohail Khan. Former Test batsman Basit Ali will be the coach.

Southern Punjab will be coached by Abdul Rehman, who has retained Shan Masood as his team’s captain. Other players who have featured in international matches include Aamir Yamin, Bilawal Bhatti, Khushdil Shah, Mohammad Abbas, Mohammad Irfan, Rahat Ali (subject to fitness) and Sohaib Maqsood.

It is good that they are seeing him as a second option, hopefully he will play first class once Rizwan gets selected for Zimbabwe, PSL and NZ tour

Good to see Saud Shakeel getting Vice captaincy. For Balochistan it should have been Imam.

Moh Abbas getting a nod for T20s over the likes of pacers like Mohammad Imran, Dilbar Hussain and Zia Ul Haq is not the best of calls and is possibly due to seniority effect. Same is the case with Umer Gul getting nod over Akhtar Shah, Mohammad Talha and Taj Wali.

KPK will be fielding a Pakistan bowling attack. Lots of pace bowling depth.

PCB made an excellent decision to move Usama Mir to Balochistan. When Yasir Shah leaves for Pakistan, Mir is a like for like replacement. Hope they don't select darter Kashif Bhatti over him !

Southern Punjab look the weakest side with their batting lineup although they've decent allround options.

Central Punjab have a couple of the U19 lads.

Sindh look slightly stronger this year with Sharjeel Khan back and a better spin option in Mohammad Asghar who transferred from Balochistan.

Mohammad Wasim has got a good white ball team - hope to see Zeeshan Malik stake a claim for the PSL.

Wow great to see Rizwan being made captain, Saud Shakil made vice captain, Abdullah Shafique and Mohammad Haris got their first XI callups, and Fawad Alam and Nauman Ali being demoted to Second XI but provided captaincy.

Only negative I can see is Sami Aslam as captain second XI rather than included in the Balochistan first XI squad. What the h*** is Faisal Iqbal doing?

More thoughts: Central Punjab has gone from being one of the oldest looking teams last year to one of the most fresh and exciting teams this year, perfect for the T20 format.

Northern looks by far the strongest. Their bowling lineup of Amir, Rauf, Musa Khan, Sohail Tanvir, Imad Wasim, Mohammad Nawaz, and Shadab Khan is fantastic. Their batting lineup in Ali Imran, Haider Ali, Rohail Nazir, Sohail Akhtar, Umar Amin, Zeeshan Malik, and of course Mohammad Nawaz is explosive. They are spoilt for options and I am fully expecting them to defend the title.

KPK has a great bowling lineup in Shaheen, Wahab, Junaid Khan, and Arshad Iqbal. Batting lineup is okay but can punch above its weight if all the 40 year olds in the team put in some effort. Hoping that Razzaq can work with Fakhar and sort out some of the issues he is having.

Balochistan and Southern Punjab look fairly boring, though I am expecting Saif Badar and Uner Khan to express themselves and impress.

Those people with in depth knowledge of the new system, now that it's in its second run do you think it is working as desired? Are younger talent being brought forward and uncles and babus slowly phased out? Or is it just old wine in new bottle?

Yes defo got quite few youngsters in thier which is good.

Nothern have the best bowling team by a mile and proberly best team all round.

Kpk it's going to be hard for Muhammad haris and muhammed haris to get into the team ahead of the seniors hopefully atleast 1 get a chance.

Bolstain do look the most boring team baring bismilah Khan they all looks test players.

Southern hopefully the likes of saif badar khushdil umer Khan otherwise ok squad dont give u to much excitement

Tbh quite a few a in the first xI but weather they get opportunity to play in it is different thing.

    Akif javed
    Arshad iqbal
    Saif badar
    Abdullah shafique
    Umer khan
    Qasim akram
    Irfan khan niazi
    Muhammed haris
    Azam khan
    Zeeshan malik

That's some of the youngsters obvs thier are stil going to be some oldies but aslong as the the youngsters get a good opportunity alongside the experienced ones then that's okay

Khyber proberly have the oldest one with hafeez malik iftikhar wahab junaid so not sure if amy of Muhammad mohsin or muhammad haris will get a chance unless injuries

Kpk have majority of the pakistan batters in the team to fakhar hafeez ifti malik which is a bad thing becouse youngsters might not get a chance.

I think we are seeing a decent process of phasing out old players. This year's lineups of the full squads include a lot of guys from this year's U19 WC which is definitely a positive sign. Some big domestic names are there and I personally dont mind as they do add to the competition at this level but, eventually with new players coming in and performing they are also gonna phase out in coming years.

I am pretty sure all the white ball domestic matches will be televised, for QAE trophy all the matches will get highlights and some will be televised taking into account what we witnessed last year, including the final.

Asif Zakir has replaced Ramiz Raja Jr in Sindh’s squad for the 2020-21 domestic season who pulled out of the domestic season in order to play club cricket in the United States.

Zakir, a Karachi-born cricketer, played for Balochistan last season.

Zakir, now 37, was a standout performer in domestic circuit for a long time and top-scored in the Quaid-e-Azam Tropy in the 2015-16 season.

In 2017, Zakir was also part of Pakistan’s ODI squad that toured the West Indies but did not get a game.

Karachi: Leg-spinner Shadab Khan and all-rounder Saad Nasim to lead Northern and Central Punjab respectively in place of Imad Wasim and Babar Azam.

According to reports, Babar will take some rest after his team Somerset made their way out from ongoing Vitaliuty Blast 2020. Whereas, Imad Wasim’s Nottinghamshire has qualified for the quarter-finals, hence will not be available for first phase of National T20 Cup, scheduled to start from September 30.

On the other hand, 20-year-old Shaheen Shah Afridi will also miss the first phase of mega domestic event. However, he will come back to Pakistan as his side Hampshire got eliminated in the group stage of Vitality Blast T20.

Meanwhile, Pakistan team members who were part of England’s tour will join their respective sides on September 25th. They will undergo back-to-back COVID-19 test on Tuesday and Thursday.

I really want to see Zeeshan Malik get an oppurtunity, but Northern has plenty of white ball batsmen. Maybe he can play over Sohail Akhtar or Asif Ali, but I do not see it happening.

Nearly PKR9million up for grabs in National T20 Cup

    • “Focus is to invest the money back in cricket by providing the players a bigger chunk of the pie through substantial and lucrative rewards so they excel in the game,” says Nadeem Khan

    Multan, 22 September 2020:

The upcoming National T20 Cup First XI tournament, which begins on 30 September in Multan, comes with an opportunity for the country’s elite white ball cricketers to pocket hefty prize money with nearly PKR9million up for grabs.

With PKR5million as the tournament’s winning prize money, Imad Wasim-led Northern will be eager for title defence.

The runner-up will receive PKR2.5million, while PKR400,000 will be shared equally between the tournament’s top performers which include player of the tournament, best batsman of the tournament, best bowler of the tournament and best wicketkeeper of the tournament.

The best performer of every match will get PKR25,000 as the man-of-the-match award while the top performer of the tournament’s finale at 18 October will be rewarded with PKR35,000.

These will be over and above earnings for the players from what they will receive as match fee and monthly retainers and is in line with the Pakistan Cricket Board’s policy of providing incentives to top performing cricketers, which will enhance the quality of domestic cricket and lead to a competitive environment while increasing the interest of the viewers.

The top performing domestic cricketers are already in line to earn to in a range of PKR3.2million to PKR1.8million only on the basis of their match fee and improved and enhanced monthly retainer structure, which was approved by the PCB’s Board of Governors in their 58th meeting.

Director High Performance, Nadeem Khan: “The Pakistan Cricket Board’s focus is to invest the money that it earns back in cricket by providing the players a bigger chunk of the pie through substantial and lucrative rewards so they excel in the game.

“There has been a massive improvement in the remuneration structure this year which presents better earning opportunities for the players. The PCB despite the Covid-19 pandemic has invested more in the prize money pool with the number of group matches being doubled this year. The PCB had put in great effort to make sure that the 2020-21 domestic season was organised as it was important for the livelihood of our players.

“As such, now the players not only have more competitive cricket to polish their skills and get more matches under their belt, but they also have more earning opportunities.”

The National T20 Cup First XI tournament will be played from 30 September to 18 October at Multan Cricket Stadium and the Pindi Cricket Stadium, Rawalpindi.
