Sarfaraz never stopped training in lockdown. This really is important time for him. In covidless era he would have been with India A after the bumper domestic season in 19-20.

Short run called by the ump....
If the TV footage and visuals are to be believed – Kings XI Punjab was probably robbed of a win against Delhi Capitals courtesy a contentious umpiring call in the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League on Sunday. ICC’s new Elite Panel entrant Nitin Menon’s howler may have cost Kings XI its first IPL win in the new season at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. The result of the match was later decided through Super Over.

While both teams were tied at 157 for 8, it was Kagiso Rabada, who bowled a brilliant Super Over to clinch it for Capitals. Before the match went into Super Over, TV footage showed that square leg umpire Menon had called a ‘run short’ when Chris Jordan took a couple of runs off Rabada in the 19th over while playing towards the long-on area.

The TV replays showed that Jordan legally completed the first run and the bat was inside the crease. However, to KXIP’s horror, Jordan was declared a ‘short run’ which means he didn’t enter his bat inside the crease which wasn’t the case.

If that run would have been allowed, it would have meant that KXIP would have won the match inside the 20 overs.

Former India captain Virender Sehwag and his opening partner Aakash Chopra lashed out at Menon. “I don’t agree with the man of the match choice. The umpire who gave this short run should have been man of the match. Short Run nahin tha. And that was the difference,” Sehwag tweeted.

Chopra and former Delhi Daredevils coach Trent Woodhill also criticized the umpiring and that technology wasn’t used.

“One short that wasn’t. Technology must take over in these cases…..but that’s possible if only the third umpire spotted it in time. What if #KXIP don’t make it to the final four by 2 points?? Tight,” Chopra wondered aloud.

KXIP can appeal to the IPL Governing Council for a change in decision.

FinCEN Files: Bank reported fraud, UK link of an IPL team sponsor

The Indian Premier League, with its showpiece auctions and big-ticket sponsors, has surfaced on the US financial regulator’s radar too — in a web of transactions that involve a leading US bank, a little-known UK company, a Kolkata-based sponsor of an IPL team, and allegations of fraud and forgery.

These are the central elements of a Suspicious Activity Report (SAR) filed with the US Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN), according to records investigated by The Indian Express.

In 2013, KPH Dream Cricket, which runs Kings XI Punjab, went to court against team sponsor NVD Solar International Ltd for “cheating and duping” them of $3 million in sponsorship fee. The SAR, filed by San Francisco-based Wells Fargo Bank, offers a clue to what went wrong.

In 2013, the bank had received “a $2,975,460 SBLC (Standby Letter of Credit) from Deutsche Bank AG in London” with KPH Dream Cricket as the beneficiary. The SBLC for nearly $3 million was sought by Aerocom UK Ltd, an air tubes manufacturer, with no apparent links to the team or the sponsor.

The SBLC said that “in case of failure of the obligator, NVD Solar International Ltd of Dhaka, Bangladesh, was to pay the amount due as per the terms of the contract”.

However, according to the SAR filed by Wells Fargo, the SBLC turned out to be “fraudulent” and was “declined”.

Wells Fargo’s SBLC unit found that none of the companies named in the request — applicant Aerocom UK, beneficiary KPH Dream Cricket, warrantor NVD Solar — were on the bank’s customer rolls. It concluded that the “SBLC is believed to be bogus, as a search of Wells Fargo electronic messaging system does not show receipt of this transaction”, according to the SAR.

Meanwhile, an investigation by Wells Fargo’s Trade Finance Investigations unit concluded that a signature of one of its officers on the electronic copy of the SBLC was forged, according to the SAR.

It also found that an email sent to the bank’s International Wholesale Banking unit, using a Wells Fargo employee’s internal address, was fraudulent and that no business purpose could be established to substantiate the request, the SAR states.

The owner of Aerocom (UK) Ltd, John Hughes, did not respond to multiple calls and emails from The Indian Express seeking comment on his links to NVD Solar. Incorporated in 2000, Aerocom is a pneumatic engineering company that deals in air tube systems and carriers. In 2013, the Nottingham-based company declared a net asset of GBP 0.6 million.

NVD Solar did not respond to multiple emails from The Indian Express seeking comment. In August 2019, a Calcutta High Court order on a case related to the company noted that NVD Solar’s directors “could not be found”.

Set up in Kolkata in 2003, NVD Solar Ltd launched operations in Bangladesh in 2012. In 2015, regulator Sebi ordered the attachment of NVD Solar’s bank accounts for recovery of Rs 1,000 crore after the company missed the deadline to refund Rs 594 crore it had allegedly raised illegally from the public. The company is in liquidation.

KPH Dream Cricket declined to comment. But company sources told The Indian Express that the dues from NVD Solar are yet to be recovered.

According to a PTI report in October 2013, KXIP co-owner Ness Wadia had alleged that the team received only Rs 42 lakh from the sponsorship deal for Rs 14.3 crore and that NVD Solar gave “fake accounts of Deutsche Bank London, Wells Fargo Bank New York, Common Suisse Bank Limited, fake Swift message, fake names of officials, even sent us mails from fake IP addresses”.

When contacted, a Wells Fargo spokesperson said: “Wells Fargo has robust anti-money laundering policies and procedures in place, and we follow all applicable financial crimes-related laws and regulations. We are unable to provide any further comment.”

Delhi Capitals all-rounder Marcus Stoinis emerged as the standout player in their opening clash against Kings XI Punjab on Sunday. After saving his side with the bat, Stonis bowled a brilliant final over and defended one run in the last three deliveries of the match. The match also featured a resilient knock by Indian batsman Mayank Agarwal, scoring 89 from 60 deliveries.

However, a glaring call by umpire Nitin Menon subsided the brilliance of both the players and many took to social media to point it out. Kings XI co-owner Preity Zinta also seemed furious with the decision and the Bollywood actress took to Twitter to share her insights on the incident. In her tweet, Zinta called out to BCCI asking the board to implement new rules in the sport, so these errors are avoided in the near future.

“I travelled enthusiastically during a pandemic, did 6 days of Quarantine & 5covid tests with a smile but that one Short Run hit me hard. What’s the point of technology if it cannot be used? It’s time @bcci introduces new rules. This cannot happen every year,” she wrote in a tweet.

Preity was reacting to Virender Sehwag’s tweet which said that he should have been awarded the Man of the Match for his short-run decision. Sehwag’s former teammates Irfan Pathan and Aakash Chopra also shared similar opinion regarding the decision.

The incident took place in the third delivery of the 19th over, when Menon standing at square-leg adjudged a double taken by Mayank as invalid. Only one run was counted to KXIP’s total as the umpire felt Chris Jordan didn’t tap his bat behind the crease while completing the first run.

However, TV replays depicted a different story, showing that Jordan had completed the run properly. This one run later proved to be crucial as KXIP suffered a loss after the contest was pushed into the Super Over.

Kings XI Punjab lodged a formal complaint on Monday over an umpiring error which proved critical in their narrow Indian Premier League loss to the Delhi Capitals. The second match of the world’s richest Twenty20 tournament ended in a tie on Sunday before Punjab lost out in a super over. But in the 19th over of Punjab’s chase, square-leg umpire Nitin Menon had signalled Chris Jordan for a short run -- not grounding his bat inside the crease when running between the wickets

TV replays showed Jordan’s bat was in the crease. But nothing could be done as the third umpire does not have the authority to overturn an on-field call, unless it is referred for review.

“We have appealed against the decision which could have been corrected had technology been brought into play,” a senior Kings XI official told AFP on condition of anonymity.

“This one run could prove costly at the business end of the tournament when teams battle for a play-off berth.”

Appeals are made to the match referee, who in this case was India’s Javagal Srinath. However, there is no provision for overturning an on-field decision after a match.

In the super over, South African quick Kagiso Rabada struck twice to limit Punjab to two runs, a total that Delhi overhauled in just three balls. As social media erupted over the short-run decision, former India opener Virender Sehwag tweeted: “I don’t agree with the man of the match choice. The umpire who gave this short run should have been man of the match.”

Cricketer-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra posted: “One short that wasn’t. Technology must take over in these cases... What if #KXIP don’t make it to the final four by 2 points??”

Umpiring standards also came into question in last year’s IPL, during which India captain Virat Kohli tersely commented: “We are not playing club cricket.”

Kohli’s team Royal Challengers Bangalore were denied a win when the umpires missed a clear no-ball by the Mumbai Indians’ Lasith Malinga on the final delivery. The IPL is being played in the United Arab Emirates after being shifted out of India due to rising coronavirus cases.

Kings Xi Punjab co-owner Ness Wadia wants the BCCI to ensure better-umpiring standards and optimal use of technology in the IPL, following an umpiring howler which cost his team the match against Delhi Capitals. Wadia expressed his views after KXIP appealed against on-field umpire Nitin Menon’s controversial ‘short-run’ call at a crunch time of the game held on Sunday night in Dubai.

Before the match went into Super Over, the TV footage showed that square leg umpire Menon had erred in calling Chris Jordan for a ‘short run’ in the third ball of the 19th over, bowled by Kagiso Rabada. The TV replays showed that Jordan’s bat was inside the crease when he completed the first run, starting from the non-striker’s end.

“It is exceedingly unfortunate that today with tremendous use of technology, we still do not use technology to ensure the total fairness and transparency in cricket game like several other leagues across the world including EPL, NBA, etc,” Wadia said in a statement to PTI.

“I would request BCCI to ensure better umpiring and to ensure henceforth that technology is used to the maximum so as to ensure fairness and transparency in a game which is used across the best leagues in the world.”

The short-run call was not reversed despite technological evidence that it was a wrong call. In the final over, Punjab needed 13 runs to win and Agarwal managed 12 runs in the first three balls.

If that one ‘short-run’ was credited to their total, Punjab would have won with three balls to spare but they lost two wickets in the final two balls after a dot fourth ball and it spilled to a Super Over, which they lost.

“VAR has become something which is used across the world. The game of yesterday in question between Kings XI and Delhi had two umpiring mistakes which cost KXIP the game,” Wadia said.

“The first came in the first few overs of the match where a leg bye went for four and it was given as leg bye by the umpire but it was actually a wide ball. That one run would have helped Kings XI win the game versus losing.

“The second disastrous decision came at the end of the game in the last couple of overs, when a run was deemed as not being a run even though TV replays showed that it had been a run. Unfortunately, these two decisions cost Kings XI the game.”

Wadia hoped the BCCI will tweak the IPL rule book to ensure the incident is not repeated. “I do hope that BCCI implements a system and process so that the other teams do not suffer the same plight as Kings XI did yesterday.

“If technology is not to there be used for the fairness and transparency of the game and to ensure that it is equitable to all, then why use technology at all?” he asked.

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar believes that the addition of England’s World Cup-winning captain Eoin Morgan has made Kolkata Knight Riders an even more dangerous unit than before in the IPL. Morgan led England to the World Cup title last year and has been in tremendous form with the bat, as it witnessed during England’s limited-overs series against Pakistan and Australia.

“Kolkata Knight Riders is such a team that has a very attractive and aggressive batting order. But the addition of Eoin Morgan to the middle-order has added more stability and experience to it. Thus, he can prove to be very dangerous,” Gavaskar said in an interview on Sports Tak.

Gavaskar further went on to predict that if KKR do not perform, the management might replace Dinesh Karthik as captain and Put Morgan in charge.

“Even this can happen that if in the first four-five games if KKR do not start well, then Eoin Morgan can replace Dinesh Karthik as the captain of the side because we always have had that complex,” Gavaskar said.

Gavaskar further went on to add that Pat Cummins, who was bought by KKR for Rs 15.5 crore at the auctions last year will feel the pressure to justify the price tag.

“KKR have the biggest T20 player in Andre Russell, but they also have the costliest player in Pat Cummins. In the recently concluded limited-overs series between Australia and England, his performance was not impressive. So there will be some kind of pressure on him,” Gavaskar said.

“Whenever you are a costly player, the weight of the price tag is always there. Will he play all the matches? that is also something that we will need to look at,” he signed off.

Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma on Wednesday became the fourth cricketer in IPL history to have hit 200 or more sixes. Rohit touched the milestone during the 14th over of MI innings against Kolkata Knight Riders when he stepped out to Kuldeep Yadav and deposited the ball over the long-on boundary.

Chris Gayle holds the record for the most sixes in IPL history with 326 such hits to his name. He’s followed by AB de Villiers who has cleared the ropes 214 times followed by Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni who has 212 sixes to his name.

Suresh Raina completes the top-five with 194 sixes so far but may not be able to add to it as he has opted out of this season citing personal reasons.

Mumbai Indians are hunting for their first win after having started the tournament on a losing note last Saturday. The defending champions lost to Chennai Super Kings by five wickets.

During the toss, Rohit admitted MI committed some mistakes but wants to leave the past behind.

“What happened in the past it’s past,” he said. “There are some areas where we need to rectify. Hopefully we don’t make those mistakes.”

Kings XI Punjab head coach Anil Kumble has said that the side is pretty confident going into the match against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Kings XI Punjab and RCB will lock horns against each other later today at the Dubai International Stadium. Punjab had lost its opening game against Delhi Capitals in a Super Over but Kumble said that the entire side took a lot of positives after that loss.

"You know obviously RCB has a very strong batting lineup with Virat, AB and Aaron Finch, very experienced as well. Young Padikkal batted really well for them in the last game, again a debutant, nice to see a youngster do well in the IPL, but we have our plans," Kumble said in a video posted on the official Twitter handle of Punjab.

"I think we have the ability to put it across so all depends on the day who plays well. Our preparations over the last one month have been really good and we are very positive after the Delhi Capitals game as to what we need to do and what are the corrections we need to make. It's on the same ground that we would be playing RCB, its a T20 tournament so you just want to be good on a particular day and look at one game at a time," he added.

On the other hand, RCB had won its opening match against SunRisers Hyderabad by 10 runs.

Kings XI Punjab and RCB have faced each other 24 times in the IPL so far and both sides have won 12 games each. However, Virat Kohli-led RCB has dominated the recent head-to-head, winning four of the previous five encounters against Punjab.

Dubai: There is some good news in store for the Rajasthan Royals fans: Ben Stokes, the star England allrounder, will not be skipping the Indian Premier League after all.

While the team got off to a 16-run win over the formidable Chennai Super Kings in their first match in Sharjah on Tuesday, the news of the matchwinner joining the squad possibly by the first week of October will be music to their ears. Stokes, who missed England’s last two Tests against Pakistan and then skipped the entire white ball series against Australia, is now in New Zealand to be with his ailing father Ged.

Stokes’s father was hospitalised last December in South Africa during England’s tour, and has since been known to be recuperating in Christchurch, New Zealand.

Well placed team sources confirmed to Gulf News that he is expected to arrive early in October, which can see him assisting the Royals for upto 10 of the 14 league matches. The ‘Big Four’ of the squad: skipper Steve Smith, Jos Buttler, Jofra Archer and Stokes can then be quite a handful for the opposition.

Meanwhile, Jos Buttler, the England wicketkeeper-batsman who is still in quarantine as he arrived separately with his family, is expected to join practice from Thursday. Royals play Kings XI Punjab next in Sharjah on September 27.

Meanwhile, Sanju Samson, Man of the Match on Tuesday night, said it was an “absolute pleasure” to bat with Steve Smith as the Australian showed no lingering effects from a concussion in helping his side beat Chennai.

Smith, who missed Australia’s three-match ODI series against England earlier this month after he was hit on the head by a ball in the nets, struck a fluent 69 to guide the Royals to a 16-run victory over the Super Kings. He joined the Royals camp last week but his participation in their season-opener had been in doubt until he passed a concussion test.

The 31-year-old, who opened the batting, smashed four sixes and four boundaries in a 47-ball 69. His second-wicket partnership of 121 with Samson paved the way for the Royals to post a hefty 216-7.

“Absolute pleasure to bat with him. He is the world’s best batsman,” said Samson, who lit up Sharjah with his 32-ball 74. “When he goes out and bats 20 overs, it becomes easy for the others coming in.” The Super Kings managed 200-6 in response.

IPL 2020 | Doubt Ben Stokes will be able to play this edition of the IPL, says Monty Panesar

Monty Panesar has expressed his concerns if Ben Stokes, who is attending to his ailing father, will be turning up for Rajasthan Royals in this edition of Indian Premier League. However, he added that if Stokes manages to return, it would be a massive boost for the Steve Smith-led franchise.

After playing the first Test against Pakistan in Manchester from August 5-9, Ben Stokes left the England bubble to travel New Zealand to attend his ailing father who was undergoing treatment for cancer. It came as a huge blow for the English side but they were extremely supportive of the all-rounder who didn’t partake in the subsequent Test series, T20Is against Pakistan as well as a three-match ODI and T20I series against Australia henceforth.

Rajasthan Royals, who were banking on him to deliver in the Indian Premier League, are yet to confirm if the all-rounder will join them in the Indian Premier League anytime soon but Panesar certainly doesn’t believe so.

"With Ben Stokes, the situation is that his father is not in a good space. For that reason, he will probably be in New Zealand and I doubt he will be coming to the IPL," Panesar told Timesofindia.com.

However, the former English spinner is optimistic that his influence on the side will be massive if he joins the squad. Currently, RR are without the services of Jos Buttler, who had to undergo a six-day Quarantine as he came with his family in a separate flight.

"He is a huge influence player, one of the key players with all-round abilities, dubbed the 'Superman of cricket'. I think his presence in the IPL will be massive. The team that looks the most dangerous (and can) win from different situations, I would probably say it's the Rajasthan Royals," said Panesar.

Very encouraging numbers from IPL's first few matches.

200 million viewers for the first two matches. Peak of 8.2 million viewers on the Hotstar app. Insane numbers even though the official viewership data is yet to be released. If the initial response sustains (which most likely will), ad rates could shoot through the roof during the festive season in India from mid-October to mid-November.

At INR 399 subscription fee for a basic connection, Hotstar alone may have already recouped a minimum of INR 250-300 cr (approx. $ 4 mn).

Financially this could go on to become the biggest IPL ever, despite zero gate fees.

My reading is even in a post-covid world, sports administrators will look at improving the viewing experience and focus less on the in-ground audience. More money to be made on TV than through the gate receipts.

IPL broadcasters seemed to have got the fake crowd noise nearly right. Watching on TV, it's difficult to say the noise is fake! It also means that the focus is on cricket and not so much on the crowd and the cheerleaders. If only they could go a step up and give us no visuals of the BCCI officials, Franchise owners and their families.

The COVID-19 pandemic has hit the ICC headquarters in Dubai as few of its staffers have tested positive for the dreaded virus and are in mandatory isolation as per the United Arab Emirates' health protocols. There is a possibility that in order to follow the strict health safety protocols, the ICC headquarters would remain closed for a few days and the staff would work from home, as the entire premises is being sanitised for operations to restart. However, the good news for all the six IPL teams based out of Dubai is that the ICC Academy grounds are "safe for training" as they are located at a different place, some distance away from the apex body headquarters.

While there was no official communication from the ICC, a senior board member privy to the development confirmed that there has been a few "positive cases", but maintained the global body was ready for any eventuality.

"It has been managed very well by the ICC as they were prepared considering the second surge of cases in the UAE," the board official said.

According to information received by PTI, all affected ICC staff are isolating as per local protocols and those who have been in close contact are also doing the same.

The ICC staff are expected to work from home for a few days as the office premises will be sanitised to make it fully operational, as per the health safety norms of the UAE government.

There are currently six IPL teams based out of Dubai and they are using the practice facilities at the ICC Academy grounds located in Dubai Sports City.

"The ICC Academy is perfectly safe because neither it is adjacent to the office headquarters nor are there are any ICC staff who is present at the practice session.

"So there is no question of any health scare as far as IPL teams are concerned," a senior board source told PTI on the condition of anonymity.

Chennai Super Kings CEO Kasi Viswanathan has ruled out the return of Suresh Raina into the squad for IPL 2020, saying the franchise respects his space and decision. Raina returned to India from the UAE for 'personal reasons', but later hinted that he could even return back to the squad.

CSK have struggled in the IPL 2020 so far, winning only one of their three games. The batting in particular has been poor as none barring Ambati Rayudu and Faf du Plessis look in form. CSK's meek capitulation to Delhi Capitals on Friday sparked a trend on Twitter calling for the return of Suresh Raina, but that seems unlikely to happen.

"We cannot look at Raina because he made himself unavailable, and we respect his decision and his space. We are not thinking about it," Viswanathan told ANI.

"I can assure the fans that we will bounce back strongly. It's a game and you have your good and bad days. But the boys know what they need to do and the smiles will be back."

After the game against DC, which CSK lost by 47 runs chasing 176, Dhoni admitted lack of 'steam' in the batting.

"We are lacking a bit of steam in the batting and that hurts. The run rate keeps on mounting after such slow starts and adds pressure, we need to figure that out. We need to come back with a clearer picture, looking at the combination. There are quite a few things we can think about. We are one batter extra to start off, so the players need to step up," Dhoni said.

Coach Stephen Fleming too admitted that the batting was 'muddled' in the absence of key players like Raina and Rayudu, who missed the last two games due to injury.

"We are a bit muddled at the moment, we are missing some key players and are trying to find a balance that allows us to be competitive," he said. "Again it comes to the spin bowling aspect, we are looking to develop a personality on the type of pitches we are getting. We are trying to find a combination without Raina and Rayudu. The performance against Delhi was on the weaker side in terms of intent. It has been an interesting six days and now we have the time to rectify the issues and there are a few of them."

Like Dhoni did in the post match presentation, Viswanathan too confirmed that Rayudu will return for CSK's next match, against SRH on October 2.

Dubai: Rajasthan Royals batsman Robin Uthappa appears to have violated Covid-19 guidelines for the IPL on Wednesday as he seemed to be applying saliva on the ball in a match against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

In videos that surfaced on social media during the match, Uthappa can be seen picking the ball up during the third over of the match, move his fingers towards his mouth before rubbing briefly on the ball.

Chennai Super Kings pacer KM Asif has become the first player to have breached the IPL bio-secure bubble, albeit accidentally for which he was placed in a six-day quarantine, a report claims.

Asif misplaced his room key and then proceeded to the reception area for a replacement. The area, as per IPL 2020 rules, doesn’t fall under the secure zone and thus the Kerala cricketer was deemed to have breached the bubble.

England all-rounder Ben Stokes is yet to arrive in the UAE to take part in the IPL 2020 for Rajasthan Royals. Amid growing whispers that Stokes might miss the first half of the tournament, Royals’ mentor Shane Warne provided an update on the all-rounder’s availability for this year’s Indian Premier League.

Warne did not give a timeframe for Stokes’ arrival in UAE but he did seem hopeful about the England all-rounder playing a part in IPL 2020.

“Hopefully, Ben Stokes would play a part this year, he’s a big loss and our thoughts are with him, but you know, add Ben to the team that played the other night and it looks a very, very good side,” Warne told PTI.

Stokes is currently in New Zealand with his family. He went there in August this year after his father was diagnosed with brain cancer. He had also missed the last two Tests against Pakistan citing personal reasons. Stokes is one of RR’s main players and Warne said his arrival will bolster the batting line-up comprising Jos Buttler, Steve Smith and Sanju Samson.

“I liked it, him (Smith) coming to open the innings,” opined Warne on Smith’s 69 and 50 in the first two games. “I am always a big believer in your best player having the opportunity to face the most amount of deliveries, so for me you know Jos Buttler, Steve Smith and Sanju are one, two and three, respectively.”

In fact, Warne feels Smith and chief coach Andrew McDonald shouldn’t tinker with the top three, come what may.

“Steve Smith and Andrew McDonald might have different ideas but I would always want my best players facing the maximum number of balls. We’ve got so many good players who could play so many different roles, but I personally like Steve Smith at the top,” Warne added.

Ben Stokes To Undergo 1st COVID Test Today, Should Be Ready For SunRisers Hyderabad Match: Report

England and Rajasthan Royals all-rounder Ben Stokes has started his 6-day quarantine period and will undergo his first COVID test on Sunday. And if all goes as per plan, the star all-rounder should take the field for Royals' game against SunRisers Hyderabad in Dubai on October 11. Speaking to ANI, a Rajasthan Royals official said that having landed and gone into immediate isolation, Stokes will have his first round of test on Sunday and should be ready for action for the next weekend encounter against SRH.

"He has started his quarantine phase as soon as he reached the hotel. He will have his first test today and with the 6-day period ending the day we play against Delhi Capitals in Sharjah, we are looking at him playing against SRH. It will also help him get back into the groove as he has been off the field for some time," the official said.

Asked if he can squeeze into the game against Delhi Capitals on October 9, the official said: "His quarantine period ends that day. So, he comes out and joins the team the next day which is October 10."

While the English and Australian players who had come in from the bubble in the UK to Dubai had to quarantine for 36 hours, those who headed to Abu Dhabi had to follow the six-day quarantine rule and similarly, Stokes who has come in from New Zealand will have to follow the six-day process before he can join his team.

Stokes joining the team is a huge boost for the Royals as they have lost two of the four games they have played so far, with their game against Royal Challengers Bangalore in Abu Dhabi ending in a defeat on Saturday.

Stokes' presence in the middle-order will be a big boost for the Royals as their other overseas star Jos Buttler has failed to give them impressive starts, and that has seen the middle-order come under pressure. The likes of Robin Uthappa and Riyan Parag have failed to live up to the expectations, and the middle-order needs a bit of a reshuffle for the Royals.

In fact, the all-rounder is also a clever operator with the ball and can definitely add to skipper Steve Smith's arsenal when it comes to keeping things tight.

Commenting on the side's balance, Warne had also a few days back pointed that Stokes coming in would make this team one of the most well-balanced teams in the competition. "Hopefully, Stokes would play a part this year, he's a big loss and our thoughts are with him, but you know add Ben Stokes to the team that played the other night and it looks a very very good side," he had told ANI.

Stokes was a part of the series against Pakistan when he came to know of his father's ill-health and left for New Zealand. "Stokes will leave the UK later this week and travel to New Zealand. He will miss England's two Test matches against Pakistan at the Ageas Bowl on Thursday 13 August and Friday 21 August," the ECB had said in a press release on August 9.

Read some news about some corrupt approaches in the IPL being reported. Never great o hear especially in and around Sharjah. I've seen a lot of videos of players, coaches etc on their phones in the dugout during matches, i was always under the impression this was completely banned, has this been relaxed or does it only apply to international matches.

In a first of its kind, the Indian Premier League 2020 mid-season transfer window opens on Tuesday and is likely to remain that way for five days. The window will allow franchisees to assess their position and make choices to bolster their setup going into the business end of the tournament. According to BCCI, all teams should have played half their matches that would be seven for the process to begin. After Match 28 between Kolkata and Bangalore, all eight teams have now played seven games.

IPL 2020 mid-season transfers: Players eligibility

So, who is eligible to be picked and who is not? Only those players who have played two or fewer games are eligible to be picked. On the contrary, if a player has featured in more than two games, the player will not be eligible. Also, there has to be mutual consent between the franchise and the player as well. The final decision remains with the franchise; they need to identify players they want to keep/release. This arrangement is available only for the remainder of the season and the loanee returns to his parent team next season.

IPL 2020: All players eligible for mid-season transfer

Mumbai Indians: Aditya Tare, Anukul Roy, Mitchell McClenaghan, Chris Lynn, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Saurabh Tiwary, Mohsin Khan, Digvijay Deshmukh, Prince Balwant Rai, Dhawal Kulkarni, Jayant Yadav, Sherfane Rutherford, Anmolpreet Singh

Chennai Super Kings: KM Asif, Imran Tahir, Narayan Jagadeesan, Karn Sharma, Mitchell Santner, Monu Kumar, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shardul Thakur, R Sai Kishore, Josh Hazlewood

Delhi Capitals: Ajinkya Rahane, Keemo Paul, Sandeep Lamicchane, Alex Carey, Avesh Khan, Harshal Patel, Ishant Sharma, Lalit Yadav, Daniel Sams, Tushar Deshpande, Mohit Sharma.

Sunrisers Hyderabad: Shreevats Goswami, Siddharth Kaul, Wriddhiman Saha, Vijay Shankar, Virat Singh, Bavanaka Sandeep, Fabien Allen, Sanjay Yadav, Basil Thampi, Billy Stanlake, Mohammad Nabi, Sandeep Sharma, Shahbaz Nadeem

Kings XI Punjab: Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Murugan Ashwin, Deepak Hooda, Ishan Porel, Chris Jordan, Simran Singh, Tajinder Singh, Arshdeep Singh, Darshan Nalkhande, Krishnappa Gowtham, Hardus Viljoen, Chris Gayle, Harpreet Brar, Jagadeesha Suchith, Mandeep Singh

Chennai Super Kings have kept their IPL 2020 playoff hopes alive after beating Sunrisers Hyderabad in Dubai on Tuesday night. The 20-run win was their third of the season in eight matches so far and pushed them to the sixth spot in the points table.

However, during the match, an incident involving on-field umpire Paul Reiffel and CSK captain MS Dhoni has created controversy. It happened during SRH innings as they were attempting to chase down the target of 168 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

Shardul Thakur was bowling the 19th over of SRH innings and after he had bowled his second delivery, a yorker well outside the tramline, the umpire began stretching his his arms in to signal it as a wide. However, right midway, he stopped and refrained from making the signal.

Replays showed that as Reiffel was about to make the decision, Dhoni began angrily protesting after spotting what the umpire was going to do. He charged forward and made a gesture with his hands which may have forced Reiffel to rethink his call.

While this was happening, SRH captain David Warner made his frustration clear with what was transpiring in the middle.

IPL playing conditions give an umpire right to change any decision if made promptly.

As per section 2.12 of the IPL match playing condition, “An umpire may alter any decision provided that such alteration is made promptly. This apart, an umpire’s decision, once made, is final.”

However, here it appeared as if the call was made after spotting an angry Dhoni contesting the decision.

Even the commentators were flummoxed by the bizarre turn of events.

“I’m almost dead certain that I saw his (Reiffel) arms start to go out,” Kevin Pietersen said during the match. “And there was a lot of shouting and screaming at him, and he sort of stopped his decision.”

This isn’t the first time that Dhoni has actively gotten involved protesting an umpire’s decision during IPL. Last season, after the umpire changed his no-ball decision against Rajasthan Royals, the CSK skipper stormed onto the pitch before getting involved into a heated argument with the on-field umpires.

Is this the greatest IPL season ever?

The hype is always there but this seems like arguably the most hard fought IPL at least as far as i can recall.

The sheer quality of team line-ups this year.

Too bad fans could not witness this season atthe ground.

Very much so, only lacking in atmosphere in the ground . If only it was played in front of packed Indian crowds.

I agree. I recently said something on that line as well(don't remember though), the games have been exciting enough and some of the teams have really fascinating batting lineups.

Given the vibe till now, I feel there is something special or unique still to happen during the final days of the tournament which will further strengthen this argument.

Chennai and Hyd truly sucked. But the other teams can all still qualify. Exciting IPL this year

Ain’t ever been the same since season 1.

The best in the world were playing, not the best of 5-6 countries

Cricket wise, from what I have seen. It’s quite exciting and dramatic. The focus solely has been on cricket rather than the off-field circus theatre

    Cricket has been very good

Greatest was the first one, without doubt, despite the participation of some poor T20 players such as Justin Langer and Akash Chopra.

Tbh I have watched the IPL after ages. The rivalry was intense this year. Also, good to see some second tier teams doing well this time around.

A good first impression for those who are watching for the first time.

I thought players would be rusty this year but it seems like all the break from.crickrt made them more determined to compete hard this season.

The international stars are doing well.

And most importantly the Indian second tier talent has done a lot better this season than they usually do. I am pleasantly surprised to see the improvements in batting and fielding.
