    Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2020/21 | Round 4 | November 20-23 | Matches Thread

Fourth round of first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy begins on Friday

    Karachi, 19 November 2020:

Following an 11-day break during which the HBL Pakistan Super League 2020 playoffs and final were held at Karachiís National Stadium, the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy first-class tournament resumes with the fourth-round matches from Friday.

The four-day tournament has seen a hugely competitive start with seven out of the first nine matches producing results.

Southern Punjab lead the six-team table with 55 points while defending champions Central Punjab are languishing at the bottom with a mere 16 points courtesy two defeats and one draw.

Following the announcement of the 35-player contingent for the New Zealand tour, the six head coaches were provided a window to rejig their squads by promoting top performers from Second XI teams, picking reserve players or selecting a maximum of three of those cricketers from the other Cricket Associations who are yet to feature in first-class cricket this season.

While most of the coaches promoted players from the lower-rungs, Central Punjab had batsman Tayyab Tahir transferred from Southern Punjab.

With Azhar Ali, Sarfaraz Ahmed and Shan Masood amongst the 35-player touring party, which departs for New Zealand later this week, Hasan Ali, Asad Shafiq and Umar Siddiq will lead Central Punjab, Sindh and Southern Punjab, respectively.

Southern Punjab v Sindh Ė National Stadium:

The table-toppers will take on fourth placed Sindh in the televised fixture at the National Stadium. The match would be broadcast live on PTV Sports with the PCB YouTube channel providing delayed stream of the encounter.

Southern Punjab won their first two matches before losing their last match to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa by 75 runs.

The Umar Siddiq-led side would hope to continue their domination and earn an outright win or enough points to secure their position at the top of the table. Besides Umar, the Southern Punjab management would be pinning hopes on Zeeshan Ashraf, Saif Babar, Mukhtar Ahmed and vice-captain Imran Rafique to provide solid runs.

The squad includes an accomplished bowling line-up that is led by Bilawal Bhatti and includes the likes of Mohammad Ilyas, Dilbar Hussain and the prolific leg-spinner Zahid Mahmood who has collected 2o wickets in the tournament so far.

The Asad Shafiq-led Sindh (36 points) have lost Sarfaraz, Fawad Alam and Sohail Khan as the trio is a part of the New Zealand-bound squads. The 77-Test veteran Asad would be aiming to regain his batting form after losing his middle-order batting spot in the Test squad.

The left-handed Saud Shakeel, who smashed a brilliant 174 in Sindhís loss to Northern, will be the linchpin in the Sindh top-order and would be now hoping to shoulder extra responsibility after his elevation to the vice-captaincy.

Besides Asad and Saud, Sindh possess a formidable batting line-up in Omair-Bin-Yousuf, Saad Ali and Shehzar Mohammad. The seasoned Tabish Khan will lead the attack which also includes Mir Hamza and the exciting pacer Shahnawaz Dahani.

Shahnawaz along with leg-spinner Abrar Ahmed have been picked-up from Sindh Second XI squads following impressive performances in the Second XIs three-day tournament.

Balochistan v Northern Ė NBP Sports Complex:

Third-placed Balochistan will play host to second-placed Northern at the National Bank Sports Complex.

Balochistan have won one game, drawn one and lost one match so far to collect 44 points. With Yasir Shah unavailable, veteran Imran Farhat will lead the side and their batting charge. Balochistan also will not have their prolific batsman Imran Butt who has been rewarded for an impressive run in first-class cricket with a spot in the 35-member New Zealand bound squad.

Farhat will now be banking on Azeem Ghumman, Akbar-ur-Rehman (both promoted from Balochistan Second XI) and Taimur Ali to provide him runs.

The Balochistan squad includes Umaid Asif, Taj Wali and Usama Mir as experienced and potent bowlers.

Nauman Ali-led Northern (52 points) would once again be relying on their prolific captain to spearhead their victory bid in the match. The left-arm-spinner Nauman has taken 25 wickets and at present occupies the top-spot in the bowling charts.

Nauman will look to Salman Irshad, Muhammad Nawaz, Waqas Ahmed and all-rounder Hammad Azam to provide him bowling support.

Asif Ali, Ali Sarfaraz and Umar Amin will lead the batting firepower after the departure of Zeeshan Malik as part of the New Zealand bound squad. Youngster Nasir Nawaz has been promoted from the Northern Second XI after some impressive performances.

Central Punjab v Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Ė UBL Sports Complex:

Defending champions but currently bottom-placed Central Punjab have all to play for in their fixture against Khyber Pakhtunkhwa at the UBL Sports Complex. After Azhar Aliís departure, fast bowler Hasan Ali has been named captained of the side with seasoned batsman Usman Salahuddin his deputy.

Hasan will spearhead the bowling attack with Ehsan Adil, Waqas Maqsood, Bilawal Iqbal and Bilal Asif.

Central Punjab still have some serious batting prowess despite losing Azhar and Babar Azam in Ahmed Shehzad, Usman, Ali Zaryab, Rizwan Hussain and Saad Naseem.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will be led by Khalid Usman. They are currently placed fifth in the table with 33 points after having won one, lost one and drawn one game. Vice-captain Israrullah, Adil Amin, Musadiq Ahmed and Mehran Ibrahim (elevated from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Second XI) will be hoping to make big runs for the side.

The bowling attack is led by Imran Khan Snr. Sameen Gul and Arshad Iqbal are two young and talented speedsters in the squad. Off-spinner Sajid Khan, who has taken 22 wickets in the first-three rounds, will be the bowling trump card for his captain.

Meanwhile, Tayyab Tahir is the only player who was transferred using the transfer window that was created after the exit of the 35 players from the tournament. Batsman Tayyab was transferred from Southern Punjab to Central Punjab.

Adnan Akmal will miss the fourth round after testing positive prior to his departure for Lahore.

Kamran Akmal will be travelling to Sri Lanka for participation in the Lanka Premier League while Sami Aslam has informed his team management that he is not available due to ďpersonal reasonsĒ.

Two coaches are also completing their quarantine periods, following which they will join their respective sides. The revised squads are available below.

This years QeA has been really promising. Much better competition between bat and ball and some flat track bullies have been filtered out. Quality of fast bowling has gone up massively. Bowlers like Waqas Maqsood and Khurram Shahzad have been the most promising fast bowlers along with Ammad Butt. Saud and Hussain both seem to be competing for the same place in the Pakistan Test XI. Both have put up some amazing performances. With Hussain leaving for NZ, Suad has a Golden opportunity to top the batting charts and force his way in. All in all the combined with good coverage and quality cricket, First Class cricket is finally looking like an attractive product to watch.
My only complain is that Northern and KPK are yet to get a televised game while CP, SI and BAL are keep getting their games Televised.

Right now the circus is over we return to proper cricket.

That table comparing QEA 20 to QEA 19 is very encouraging. You see a vastly improve bat-ball balance and the average 1st innings score of 290 is comparable to other FC competitions like the County Championship and Sheffield Shield.

I'd like to see the seamers break into the top three wicket-takers now as the spinners have dominated in the last two years, and Pakistan needs some seasoned Test pacers instead of betting on so many raw kids.

Injuries could be a worry - better have them in a controlled environment - although Naseem Shah could do with some match practice.

Omair is one to look out for, so is Hasan Mohsin. Shahnawaz is a tall fast bowler as far as I recall, so there's that. For me personally Sindh has the best young prospects in QeA right now, regardless of the fact that they hardly get any chances due to the senior players hogging the First XI.

ATG Khurram manzoor played over omair in previous games than the Sindh has reservations over selection. When you yourself donít give chances to your younger players than donít blame PCB. How many young sindhi players were given chances by the Sindh in Their team.

Zahid Mehmoodís spin in subcontinental conditions is being toyed with right now by the prodigal son Asad Shafiq, who people wanted dropped from the New Zealand tour. Those same people also wanted to play Zahid Mehmood in New Zealand against New Zealand.

Unfortunately, Spin isn't what Asad Would have been facing in NZ, and not on dead pitches like these either.
However I wouldn't be surprised if Asad gets a call up straight after NZ tour after the inevitable injury to Haris and the certain failure of Fawad.

Play should at least start an hour earlier so that90+ overs are bowled each day. Pakistani bowers due to current situation lacks bowling fitness ie to bowl 20+ overs a day in between them at sustained quality and pace. There is surely difference between fitness and bowling fitness

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa gathered all bonus points for bowling on offer as they bowled out Central Punjab for a paltry 158 in 66.2 overs on the opening day of the fourth round of the first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy at the UBL Sports Complex on Friday.

The defending champions dealt a blow on the first ball of the match as Ali Zaryab was trapped in front by Imran Khan Snr. The pacer added two more wickets to his tally and returned three for 29 from 13 overs, four of which were maidens.

Sajid Khan’s impressive run in the tournament continued as the off-spinner accounted for Central Punjab captain Usman Salahuddin (54), Mohammad Saad (four), Ali Shan (nine) and Bilawal Iqbal (0). He returned 26-7-56-4.

Usman, who had elected to bat after winning the toss, was the only batsman to put up a resistance with a 145-ball 54 – his 44th first-class half-century. The 29-year-old struck four boundaries over the course of his stay.

There was, however, resurgence in the latter part of the day as Central Punjab’s Waqas Maqsood and Bilal Asif took two wickets each which had Khyber Pakhtunkhwa struggling at 61 for four.

Openers Musadiq Ahmed (22) and Israrullah (25) contributed 42 runs for the first wicket before they lost three wickets for seven runs.

By the virtue of taking eight or more wickets and dismissing the opposition under 200 runs inside 100 overs, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa pocketed six points. Central Punjab, languishing at the bottom of the points table, failed to get any bonus points for batting but added one for their bowling.

A 228-run partnership between century-makers Omair Bin Yousuf and his captain Asad Shafiq had Sindh placed at a comfortable 289 for five at the close of play after Zia-ul-Haq’s opening burst had them struggling at 37 for three.

In the match played at the National Stadium, Omair, the 21-year-old right-hand batsman, stroked an unbeaten 129 after arriving at the crease with his team 15 for two.

He was joined by Asad, who scored 123 from 195 balls before getting retired hurt, following the dismissal of Saud Shakeel (nine) by right-arm pacer Bilawal Bhatti. Asad, who had earlier decided to bat after winning the toss, smashed 17 fours.

Omair has hit 11 fours from the 210 balls he has faced to date and he will resume Sindh’s innings tomorrow with Saad Ali (11 not out).

Both the openers – Sharjeel Khan (five) and Jahid Ali (three) – were dismissed by left-arm pacer Zia, who returned two for 41 from his 14 overs. The other two wickets were taken by Bilawal Bhatti and Zahid Mehmood.

By the end of day one, Sindh had gathered two bonus points for batting, while Southern Punjab, who are at the top of the table, added a bonus point for bowling.

Balochistan opener Azeem Ghumman missed out on what would have been his eleventh century in first-class cricket by five runs in his side’s match against Northern at the National Bank Sports Complex.

The right-handed batsman faced 233 balls and struck eight boundaries on his way to 95 before he was dismissed by left-arm orthodox Mohammad Nawaz.

Following Northern captain Nauman Ali’s decision to not to contest the toss and elect to bowl first, Azeem stitched a crucial 105-run second wicket partnership with Ali Waqas, who scored 52.

Imran Farhat, the Balochistan captain who opened with Azeem, was the first wicket to fall as he was dismissed by his counterpart on 24. Nauman, the leading wicket-taker in the ongoing tournament, finished the day with three for 70 from 32 overs.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Bismillah Khan and Ayaz Tasawar will resume the innings for Balochistan on Saturday at 26 not out and 14 not out.

    Scores in brief:

At UBL Sports Complex, Central Punjab won the toss and elected to bat:

Central Punjab 158 all out, 66.2 overs (Usman Salahuddin 54, Bilal Asif 22, Ahmed Safi Abdullah 20; Sajid Khan 4-56, Imran Khan Snr 3-29, Khalid Usman 2-35)

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 61-4, 21 overs (Israrullah 25, Musadiq Ahmed 22; Waqas Maqsood 2-17, Bilal Asif 2-26)

Points to date: Central Punjab 1, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 6

At the National Stadium, Sindh won the toss and elected to bat:

Sindh 289-5, 83.2 overs (Omair Bin Yousuf 129 not out, Asad Shafiq 123 retired hurt; Zia-ul-Haq 2-41)

Points to date: Sindh 2, Southern Punjab 1

At the National Bank Sports Complex, Northern elected to bowl (toss uncontested):

Balochistan 257-5, 87 overs (Azeem Ghumman 95, Ali Waqas 52, Bismillah Khan 26 not out, Taimur Ali 26, Imran Farhat 24; Nauman Ali 3-70)

Points to date: Balochistan 2, Northern 1

Sindh was running out of wickets and that required Shafiq to get out of his comfort zone, and we know how well Shafiq does at that. No idea why he tried charging down the track to a short ball by a leg spinner rather than farm the strike and play sensible shots given his strength against spin.

Another of Zahidís 4 wickets was an act of fielding brilliance that otherwise he would have been put away for a boundary on.

Overall, Zahid Mehmood was dispatched to all parts of the ground by Omair bin Yousuf and Asad Shafiq.

Nothing against him at all, I actually really like him. I think he has a bright future.

And we saw the same match. He showed a lot more intent today, which refers to the boundaries he hit today. But overall, he slowed down a lot yesterday and the stats I listed (100 in 150 then 50 in the next 100) back that up. This was despite the pitch getting better for batting as the day went on, and Asad Shafiq actually surpassed his run tally really quickly despite starting a fair bit behind.

Not criticizing him at all, just pointing out that he has certain things to work on - in this case, building momentum in an innings (especially when that momentum could have secured one extra point, as they could have targeted 400 in 100 overs yesterday but settled instead for just barely making 350). In other words, it was almost 2 points lost when they were in very good position to make all 5 out of 5 by making 400.

Heís young and will learn these things with time, of course.

Faisal Iqbal is also the person who made Bangalzai a known quantity in the first place! Thatís why you know about him. Faisal Iqbal gave him the promotion to the Balochistan first XI for T20 cricket and thatís why youíre here talking about him.

As far as first class goes, at this age, Bangalzai should actually be playing second XI cricket similar to many others. I actually think Faisal Iqbal is going to give him a first XI game soon, since heís in the first XI squad rather than playing second XI.

So far, Faisal Iqbal has showed much much more intent to develop youngsters than some other coaches, and the logic for having him in the first XI squad only if heís going to actually end up playing. Thatís what makes sense to me, if Bangalzai doesnít play first or second XI both this season, you can quote me and Iíll join you in criticizing Faisal Iqbal.

He could definitely have been playing second XI games all this while.

Saif Badar needs to go big here. For all the potential he has his career has gone nowhere. SP have backed him and given him another chance at number 4. He needs to repay that faith.

Sajid Khan’s impressive run in the ongoing first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy continued as the off-spinner added four more wickets to his tally and gave his side, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, an upper hand over Central Punjab on the second day of the first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy fourth round fixture at the UBL Sports Complex on Saturday.

Title defenders Central Punjab had half of their batting lineup back in the hut with just 65 runs on board in their second innings at the close of play. They still have a 13- run deficit to surmount when Mohammad Saad (three) and Saad Nasim (14) resume their innings tomorrow morning.

Sajid accounted for top four Central Punjab batsmen – Ali Zaryab (19), Ahmed Shehzad (21), Rizwan Hussain (five) and Usman Salahuddin (one).

The 27-year-old returned 11-5-20-4 after Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were bowled out for 236, courtesy an unbeaten 92 by Khalid Usman.

Khalid, who batted at eight, struck 10 fours and two sixes in his undefeated 141-ball stay at the crease. He arrived at the crease with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa struggling at 98 for six after resuming the day at 61 for four.

The other notable contribution with bat came from Kamran Ghulam, who scored 43 runs from 115 balls with the help of six fours and a six.

Pacer Waqas Maqsood and off-spinner Bilal Asif added one wicket each to their tally to finish with three for 41 and three for 107. Ahmed Safi Abdullah returned two for 41.

By the virtue of dismissing Khyber Pakhtunkhwa inside 100 overs and limiting them under the 250-run mark, Central Punjab pocketed five bonus points for b0wling, while Khyber Pakhtunkhwa could gather one bonus point for batting.

Sindh’s Omair Bin Yousuf scored a brilliant 153 from 253 balls at the National Stadium against Southern Punjab. The 21-year-old right-handed batsman had scored his career’s fourth century yesterday and resumed the innings on 129.

Over his 423-minute stay at the crease, stretched over four sessions, Omair stroked 15 fours.

His captain Asad Shafiq, who had retired hurt yesterday, added 18 runs to his overnight score before he was dismissed on 141 by leg-spinner Zahid Mehmood, who stood out with an impressive four for 84.

Asad hit 18 fours from the 241 balls he faced before Sindh were all out for 383 in 111.5 overs. They gathered four bonus points for batting as they had breached the 350-run mark by the completion of 100 overs, while Southern Punjab bagged two points for dismissing six batsmen.

Zia-ul-Haq, Muhammad Imran and Bilawal Bhatti took two wickets each.

Zain Abbas’s unbeaten 75 had lifted Southern Punjab to 148 for the loss of two wickets in 51 overs when stumps were drawn. Zain has crunched 10 boundaries from the 141 balls he has faced to date.

The 29-year-old Kabirwala-born stitched a crucial 81-run alliance with Imran Rafiq (42) after his opening partner Mukhtar Ahmed (two) was sent packing early in the innings by pacer Tabish Khan, who took both Southern Punjab wickets.

On Sunday, Zain will resume the 56-run stand for the unfinished third wicket with Said Badar, who has scored 27 runs from 54 balls.

Half-centuries by Ayaz Tasawar and Kashif Bhatti helped Balochistan post an imposing 418 all out from 124.3 overs against Northern at the National Bank Sports Complex.

Ayaz scored 71 from 107 balls with the help of 11 boundaries, while Kashif smashed a 68-ball 54, studded with five fours and a six.

The other notable contribution down the order came from number nine batsman Mohammad Talha, who scored 30 from 22 balls, which included three sixes and two fours.

Northern captain Nauman Ali added another wicket to his account as he finished with four for 129, while Mohammad Nawaz and Nasir Nawaz picked up two wickets each.

Northern, in their reply, were 196 for six at the close of play. A large chunk of their total was contributed by one-drop Faizan Riaz who recorded his career’s 19th first-class half-century.

Faizan smashed 12 fours and a six in his 109-ball 78 to lift his side from a precarious give for three as he stitched a 68-run partnership for the fourth wicket with Asif Ali (36).

Taj Wali and Kashif took two wickets each.

Mohammad Nawaz was unbeaten on 39. The day ended with the dismissal of all-rounder Hammad Azam, who scored 34 from 62.
