ICC announce award nominations for players of the decade - Yasir Shah & Misbah only Pakistanis
The International Cricket Council (ICC) opens fan voting on Wednesday for a special edition of the ICC Awards of the Decade, celebrating and rewarding top performances of the decade in cricket for both men and women.
The ICC Awards of the Decade will recognise the best players across cricket over the past 10 years, and the for the first time the fans’ voice will be heard in selecting the winners across categories including the Sir Garfield Sobers and Rachael Heyhoe Flint Awards, which celebrate the best overall player from the men’s and women’s game over the past decade. The fan vote will make up 10% of the voting, while votes from an expert panel will make up the remaining 90%.
The nominees for each of the categories have been determined by the Awards Nominations Committee according to on-field performances and overall achievements for at least five years during the period.

Members of the Awards Nominations Committee conceded that it was tough shortlisting the candidates for the awards.
Former West Indies player and commentator Ian Bishop: “It is extremely challenging to shortlist any group of excellent players over an extended period. In making these choices we have tried to put context to performances, even as the different formats have evolved in pace and style in a 10-year period.
“Some of your favourite names may have missed out, but not gone without recognition. We hope that this is seen as an opportunity to discuss, celebrate and rejoice in the many great players who have entertained us on the field in the last decade.”
Indian sports journalist Sharda Ugra: “A shortlist of players for an award as monumental as representing ‘a whole decade’ is both a complete delight and an utter nightmare. First, it brings back all the great memories the game gave us in that massive slice of time. That is smiles-on-faces time.
“The job of then pruning this from a vast cast of great characters down to a few names to work with requires much teeth-gritting. Sentimental favourites must be put through the sieve of significance of achievement, performance across ten years, quality of opposition and on we go, slicing and dicing.
“At the end of it, all you can do is be grateful to the game for giving you so much to love.”

Kohli is easily the greatest cricketer of this decade and it is not even close. No batsman has dominated across formats like he has and plus he has 33 Test wins as captain.
Remarkable stuff.

Kohli should deservedly sweep a number of these awards. He's been the most iconic player of the last decade who has dominated across formats and countries. Phenomenal decade of domination.

My picks:
ICC player of the decade Award:
Kohli
ICC ODI player of the decade:
Kohli
ICC Test player of the decade:
Smith
ICC T20I player of the decade:
Kohli
ICC Spirit of Cricket award of the Decade:
Williamson will walk this “nicest loser” award just like he won the World Cup player of the tournament last year when he was far from the best player of the World Cup.
It is quite surprising to see that Stokes has not been nominated for the Test player of the decade award or even the player of the decade award.
He has been the best all-rounder in the world by a distance for half a decade.

Cook

Tahir
Tough call between Watson and Shakib, but went for Watson in the end.

McCullum (wk)
Maxwell
Rashid
Tahir
Malinga
Bumrah

Both Stokes and Cook deserved nominations for Test player of the year.
Cook was not the same in the second half of the decade but cannot ignore what he did in Australia and India at the start of the decade.
If ICC could include Sangakkara who retired in 2015 then Cook deserved a nomination as well.
-

AB De Villiers and Dale Steyn are not in the nominations of Test Player Of The Decade award.
Both are better than Yasir
Virat, ABD, KP and Sir Viv.

Steyn deserved nomination too. He was the best pacer in Tests until 2014.
Not sure about de Villiers.

Yasir Shah ahead of Ashwin, abdv, amla, steyn is debatable but still ok.
The reason i can think of is that Shah carries his team on his shoulders and if we analyse performances of pak players in wins he will be a mile ahead of others.
Also i think he was the fastest to 200 wkts. Deserves some recognition

Misbah deserves ICC Spirit of Cricket Award

Worst decade for Pakistan cricket but we still won an ICC trophy, reached No.1 position in Tests under Misbah and were T20i number 1 for quite a lengthy period.
Better than quite a few I would say.
-
24th November 2020, 17:24 #32
Yeah, some claim (either rankings wise or tournament wise) to number 1 in every format. Obviously, we weren’t number 1 for a sustained period in any, where we absolutely dominated, but those are quite decent returns for probably one of the toughest decades in our history.
Just in the last 4 years, we were “number 1 in ODIs” via the Champions Trophy, and ranked ICC number 1 in both T20s and Tests.
Not to sound delusional because I think we’ve failed in so many ways, but there’s some things we can be proud of.

Pakistan have had their moments but our status changed from a big team to mid-table merchants in this decade.
We were too mediocre for very prolonged spells.

I’m trying to work out, if you take the negativity brigade out of the picture...we actually haven’t been so terrible during our exile decade.
What exactly have New Zealand, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and West Indies achieved more than us?
Also, England only kicked on as a decent one day outfit after 2015.Last edited by The Viper; 24th November 2020 at 18:23.

What did Pakistan team of the 2000's achieve ? Zilch. Group exits in both world cups, no CT etc. Last decade has been better results wise. In fact after Pakistan went in exile, they have won two major ICC tournaments. I will take that any day of the week over Pak team of 2000's who achieved nothing.

AB de Villiers could have swept the entire awards categories except bowlers if he remained committed to international cricket. Has himself to blame for downgrading his legacy.

Bit surprised that Younis Khan didnt make it to the Test player of the decade nominations. He scored 18 100s in the last decade in the 7 years he played. Averaged 60+ in 4 of those years and took 72 catches. He had better average than both Root and Williamson while more 100s than Joe Root. Younis had just 3 less 100s than Williamson who was able to play for whole 10 years in the decade vs Younis' 7 years.
Maybe there are certain other aspects involved but, still on the face value a bit surprising.

Yeah Yasir Shah has literally carried our test team on his back since 2015 I can't even count how many games he's won us single handedly and he's by far the fastest to 200 wickets, and as a spinner he's performed everywhere apart from Australia and he's only had 1 test in SA and NZ so can't really say much there. But everywhere else he's played he's taken wickets and won us multiple games. I don't think you can say the same for Aswhin and India would be just fine without him. India's batting is good enough to win games with Pakistan if Yasir doesn't take a bunch of wickets to get teams out under 250 it's a big problem. Also Amla played in a batting line-up full of stars Smith, AB, Kallis, and Faf. Too me Younis Khan is a bigger omission than AB and Amla if you look at the age he played at and how he continued to pile on runs in all conditions even at his age.

Was it worse than the 2000s? World Cup Eliminations in the first round both times, compared to Semi's Quarter Finals, and a 5th place finish in which we beat both the finalists. Also won a Champions Trophy and thrashed India in the final of it. Those world events alone put it above the 2000s for me.

Our success and failure is defined by the success and failure of our arch rival. We were relatively on par, competitive with India until 2011-12. That is why our fans would never really highlight the let downs of that decade, but this decade will be remembered for the clear/massive gulf in Indian and Pakistan cricket.

Stokes is an ATG. He was player of the series in England series win in South Africa twice.
He also played the greatest test knock as well as greatest ODI knock of all-time in same year.
In both these knocks, he took versatility to another level.
Further, he was player of the tournament playing for Pune SuperGiant in IPL 2017.
He will be only behind Kohli and Smith as my player of the decade.
-
24th November 2020, 21:37 #52
Again, those achievements are great, but they have only come in the last 3 or so years. I couldn't tell you what Stokes did from 2011 until maybe 2017. Player of the decade requires consistency over the entire decade. Not a good 3 or so years.
Kohli and smith have performances from every year. I could name a good Kohli performance from 2010,11,12 and so on. Same for smith. But not stokes. So he isn't anywhere near player of the decade. Someone like AB or Kane is a much better shout.

Pretty embarassing for Pakistan really. We've got one player shoe horned into a catagory which he won't win in a million years.
And the only other nomination is a spirit award for someone who's ironically one of the biggest villians in Pakistan cricket right now

LOL. Kohli for spirit of cricket? I guess people have forgotten about the time he gave the SCG crowd the middle finger.

Reasons below:
1)Asked crowd to stop booing at Steve Smith.
2)Gifted his bat to M.Amir and also seen smiling with Pak players after CT Finals defeat.
3)Over the top respect shown to Sangakkara on his final test.
4)Carried Tendulkar on his shoulder after India won the world cup and give him a free trip around Wankhede.
5)Gave himself out when there was no edge aginst Pakistan in world cup 2019.

Rajdeep has explained it.
Having said that, as hard as Kohli tries, I still don't find him stable and consistent enough to win spirit of cricket award. I think a player must be judged based on when things are going South.
Sachin, Williamson etc are some cricketers who have proven to be thorough gentlemen even in adversity. Williamson deservedly takes this one as far as I am concerned.

The ICC Awards Of The Decade will be 90% decided by the ICC Expert's Panel and the remaining 10% will be decided on the basis of votes.
Spirit Of The Cricket Award will be solely decided from the count of votes.

All good moments that made me respect Kohli more as a person. Particularly 1,2,4. But the kind of sledging and over the top displays of emotion he regularly indulges in disqualifies him from this category in my opinion. On many occasions he is very confrontational and 'in your face' with the opposition, and is unquestionably the most aggressive player in the Indian team. These kind of things are well and good in the heat of the battle but they shouldn't qualify you for a Spirit of Cricket award.

Spirit of cricket, i think it will go to either Dhoni or Kohli. The online voting bank of india is strong.
Misbah cant compete with that.
Kane williamson also has a following.

Where on earth are Sana Mir & Younis Khan in the list and why is Afridi not in the list for T20I who is arguably one of the best players of the format? This is ******** what about umar gul, the best t20i bowler?
