Babar Azam now being sponsored by Gray Nicolls. 4th Pakistani currently sponsored by them
Always a great honour to see our players be sponsored by foreign brands.
Gray Nicolls doesn't offer sponsor to every player, they only give sponsors to the talented ones.
Shaheen Shah Afridi, Shadab Khan, Rizwan and now Babar Azam are now sponsored by Gray Nicolls

I prefer it when our players play with our own companies like CA and HS who produce world class bats. We should support our own companies not get hyped when our players use foreign ones.

Also, it's just stickers.
The bats that these guys use are usually the ones they have been using all along, are familiar with and they just use the company's stickers.

The ultimate sponsor in batting remains MRF. If Babar gets sponsored by MRF, then it's really a big deal.
Lara, Steve Waugh, Tendulkar, Kohli. If Babar gets sponsored by MRF, then Babar would be in elite company. Although MRF recently diluted its brand by having signed Dhawan. But I saw Dhawan using a Kookaburra bat in Australia, so that's good. Also saw Ajaz Patel using an MRF bat in tbe UAE. Not sure what was that all about.

They have also signed de Villiers. Rohit was sponsored by them in his early days before moving on to CEAT.
Amongst young players, they already have the supremely talented Prithvi Shaw on their roster.
MRF is the most selective sponsor indeed. They rarely do business with non-elite players. The fact that Dhawan is probably the weakest player on their list says it all.

Hard to believe they signed Shadab in the first place. No wonder they don’t want to renew their contract.
Shadab is not remotely good enough to be sponsored by a big name brand.

Some iconic player and bat sponsors for me:
Lara - MRF (genius I think it was)
Tendulkar- MRF (those front drives full face of the bat showing the MRF logo was iconic
Ponting - Kookaburra
Imran Khan - Ihsan (was it the IK bat or something?)
Afridi - (for me his MB Malik was more iconic than his boom boom) some of his most iconic sixes were from that bat and some great picture shots of him and that bat
Rohit Sharma - CEAT
Inzamam ul Haq - CA
Sangakarra - SS
Ms dhoni- Reebok
David Warner and his custom square toe gray Nichols
This is just a personal list I’m sure for others there are other player bat sponsors which people found iconic.

People should understand that when companies sign up the cricketers, its not for the love of the game or player, its pure economics. MRF is the 6th largest tyre manufacturer in the world with sales of close to $3 bn, majorly in India but also in UK/Australia/Lanka etc. It's a B2C brand, the more its in front of our eyes, the better recall value it will have. So when they sign up SRT or Lara or even some IPL player, it's because they know that a quality player will be batting approximately XYZ mins in an year and some ABC mn people (potential customers) will be watching him bat. So in their internal calculations, they assess whether a deal was good or not, based upon the money they had to spend per minute of viewing time of their logo. Of course the better quality of player will ensure better brand recall value. So though MRF may not be having sales in WI but when Lara would bat, a lot of people from Asia/Australia/Eng would watch him bat, all of whom are their potential customers. I might be getting too technical but broadly that's how professional companies like MRF or CEAT measures ROI on every dollar spend. Similarly for Britannia or CEAT, both of which are $1 bn+ sales company and like any other B2C company have to spend money on advertisement/marketing.
Anyway, point i want to drive is that how much money Babar make from bat sponsorship has very little to do with the quality of his batsmanship. A Shreyas Iyer with CEAT sponsorship might be making more money than Babar for his bat logo and that's because he plays IPL/international cricket and his bat is front of target audience (Indians primarily as i doubt any other countrymen would watch Iyer bat) 75+ days in an year. MRF or CEAT would not gain anything by making Babar a brand ambassador because CEAT/MRF doesn't have any sales (as far as i know) in Pakistan and Babar is not of the stature of Lara, that people would sit and watch him even when he's playing against some other country.
As far as Gray Nicolls is concerned, it does sales of approx. $25-$30 mn annually, and assuming it spends 5-10% of its sales on marketing, it's entire marketing budget won't be more than $2-3 mn. It has signed up more than 35 cricketers across England, Australia and Pakistan and even if top 20% would be getting 80% of sponsorship money, i doubt anyone would make more than $150-200K.

big or small would depend upon their ranking in your country. So if HS has more sales than Adidas in Pakistan then it would be better for Babar to signup with HS because he's likely to get more money and more importantly he would help a local brand grow big. I don't think any cricketer think so much about their country but they should. There's no harm in promoting local companies, helping them grow big and make big bucks when they eventually become big.

I wonder which bat maker is actually the most preferred by international batsman as we know that most cases they only use the stickers of the sponsor and not the actual bat, (still remember Dhoni would still have the SS sign on the edges on his Reebok bat !)

Loved watching Yousuf playing with Gray Nicolls. One of my favourite bat manufacturers if not the favourite, oozes an elite touch with the kind of players they have had. Babar + Gray Nicolls is a class combo, hopefully it turns out to be as good for Babar as it was for Yousuf.

Imagine the backlash by Indian public after they see MRF's logo on a Pakistani superstar's cricket bat. I am pretty sure MRF knows how narrowminded Indian public is. They don't want to see people burning MRF tyres which will affect both their business and environment.

I've never quite understood this bat business.
So is Babar going to use a bat manufactured by GN or is he just being sponsored by them and will just stick a GN label on one of his bats and gloves/helmtet etc..?

I am not talking in terms of money.
Im talking in terms of branding and endorsement. Hs can go on to pay 1 carore but its not big well recognized brand.
When you associate with a brand even with less money it helps in your self promotion aswell.
Players like micheal jordan benefitted by the right brand association.

Shows your worth.
If you get sponsored by a poor brand like boom boom bubble gum it doesnt look good upon you even if they offer good money.
The benefit of being sponsored by a good brand is that it also improves your image aswell. Jordan got nike doing its marketing, usain bolt aswell.
Malik and CA are really poor brands. They have not bother to work on their brand image.
It sucks that while we boost about having a sports equipment market, those are all secondary sector industries.
We do not have a teritary sector brand in sports equipment. CA, Ihsan, and malik were always secondary sector brands and i really doubt they will ever appear in teritary sector.

What are you talking about Malik and CA are poor brands? CA at least is one of the best pieces of willow, and the 15000 is by far a very popular bat amongst the Professional cricketers in Pakistan, a lot of county played also use the CA 15000, and I have seen international cricketers (non Pakistanis) use it as well.
I don’t think you have used these two bats but they are very highly rated amongst the ‘playing
Community’.
-
1st December 2020, 20:34 #61
To be honest I am not 100% sure. As per my understanding equipment like gloves, helmet, pads, guards etc. will surely be provided by Gray Nicolls but, when it comes to bat which requires a certain comfort level and customization I think sometimes its just a sticker change but the manufacturer can create a custom made bat for the player and if he is comfortable with that he can use that bat itself.

The new bat edition which Babar will possibly use against NZ:
Blue Maax

So, there are specialist bat manufacturers. From my own knowledge, English bats are usually manufactured at licenced workshops owned by Newberry and M&H. These companies provide hand crafted bats (without stickers) to sub companies at a discounted rate, who then apply their own stickers and sell them at their own rates.
In the case of professional players, they have specific requirements to their bats which are exclusive with such workshops. The sponsor will then be the one dealing with the workshops and purchasing the customised bats/willow and applying the stickers to the bat for the cricketer as his sponsor.
I believe in Babar Azam’s case. GN will be in contact with the workshop in Sialkot where Babar Azam has got his cricket bats made from, and they will be applying the GN Maax stickers to his bat for him to use. But they will also make their own bats in the same design in England with the English willow, and market it as “the bat used by Babar Azam”.

Before I answer your question, let me just say this: Babar is very, very particular about his bats. He’s almost Steve Smith level obsessive about this kind of stuff, numerous people from the dressing room have testified about this. He polishes, cleans his bats daily, knows how to take care of the wood using oil and a knocking hammer, and has very specific demands about the weight and feel of his bats. There was a joke in the dressing room that once one of the players (I think it was Amir) needed his bat’s handle/rubber sleeve fixed. So he quietly left his bat next to Babar’s overnight, and returned the next day to find it magically shining and all ready to go.
Point being, it would be a big deal if Babar changes the actual bat. But I do expect GN to send a kitbag of bats over. I am quite sure he has his own custom specifications for any bat he buys, so he will likely send that over and GN will send him both stickers as well as a collection of tailor-made bats.
I am guessing Babar’s kit bag 6 months from now will contain 2-3 non-GN bats with the GN sticker in addition to 2-3 GN bats with custom specifications (modified Blue Maax‘s from Sialkot, according to @Rana). After that, Babar will rotate and use his bats as he sees fit, but if he doesn’t like the GN bats I am sure he will ditch them immediately.Last edited by Thunderbolt14; 1st December 2020 at 21:00.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Babar Azam had offers from Gun and Moore or New Ballance on the table as well.
I think Babar has chosen wisely in this case. The peak years of his batting, where he is expected to score huge, meaningful runs as the captain of the side are going to be with Gray Nichols. Great manufacturer with excellent ambassadors in the past who have given the name a lot of prestige.
-

Oh how can I forget De Villiers. MRF really takes on the creme de la creme of batters. However, I believe MRF shouldn't have taken Prithvi Shaw on board. There's no doubt about his talent but I associate MRF with established superstars. Not upcoming talents. Maybe when Prithvi is as big of a matchwinner as Rohit Sharma, then MRF can have him on board but it's too early for my liking.
Dhawan is an exceptional bat himself but him being in the same company as Lara, Waugh, Tendulkar, Kohli, De Villiers is not right. Dhawan looks a misfit in that category. He's second tier.

you completely missed my point.
No where in my post did i mention that CA offers poor products. What i said was they are poor brands.
There is difference between product and branding.
CA, Ihsan, Malik are good secondary sector companies, but they still haven't established themselves as tertiary brand.
Heck, even this this Gray nicolls brand, Babar might just use the stickers. But at the end of the day, its the gray nicolls brand that gets shown.
"Life is Pain"
~House~
-
1st December 2020, 22:09 #70
Yes I totally understand your point but I kindly disagree with it. You can probably argue that Malik has not made itself as that tertiary Brand, but it can’t be said with CA.
CA bat price range is the same as GM, GN, New Ballance and other established cricket equipment manufacturers in the world. It is also highly popular amongst the South Asian playing community throughout the world.
I’m not sure as to how you want a company to become a ‘brand’ anymore than it is in terms of its popularity amongst people who want to buy bats. The CA captain Morgs is a £450 cricket bat, and the 15000 is a £300 cricket bat which is very popular amongst the richer Pakistani kids (in Pakistan) who don’t really play much but are happy to spend money on fancy bats.
Maybe I am missing your point on what exactly is a brand, therefore I would like to hear it.

I think Adidas have every right to be annoyed with Pakistan. I remember Salman Butt really did promote the Adidas Incruza range very well, but they must feel highly humiliated because of him as well at the time when he got caught.
Which Pakistani cricketers have been working with New Ballance in the Past? They are fairly new in the market and we have not had the type of cricketers who they usually look for to promote their cricket bats.
